The airline traveler in me is happy with the 13”. The same traveler in me says the 14” would be fine on airline tray tables too. Maybe a little bit of adjustment needed, but it would be fine. The road warrior traveler in me says “you haven’t flown since last April. Upgrade to that 16”. And finally the business sense in me says why buy another computer when the one you have is already significant overkill for what you do? This multiple view thing in me drives me crazy. 🤪

I opted for the 16" MBP and I love the extra screen real estate as well as the super fast charging. The older I get, the more I value larger screens. I use this at home as my main computer connected to an 27" LG 4k monitor as a second screen. I have also carried this to work in the same backpack that I used for my previous Intel based 13" MBP.

Excellent...very helpful review - thank you! My current 13" MacBook Pro is great and so convenient to travel with. However, I work with a large number of complex, word dense documents that beyond trying to work with multiple documents simultaneously (difficult)...simply trying to work with a single document or window requires a fair amount of scrolling (in a reasonable size format) that can become tiring and distracting. Appreciate hearing your experience with the 16" both in terms of practical use and travel...very helpful - thanks.

I got the 16 and I love it but I have not done any traveling with it. I used to have a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 which makes all of the current MacBooks feel pretty light. I still have the custom MacBook Pro 17 backpack made by Swissgear and I carry the 17 in it. One astonishing thing about the MacBook Pro is how stuff they are, even with the additional thickness. My previous MacBook Pros are 2014 and 2015 Retina 15s and I have had a Retina 13 which I didn't use much because they were only dual-core. So very happy with the 16. If I really want a mobility laptop, I'd get the M2 Air. I actually do not need the CPU horsepower of the M1 PRO or M1 MAX - but it's the only way to get 32 GB of RAM and multiple monitor support.

I’d probably go 16 inch after watching your review. I would have said that before. I work in a hybrid setup now (some in the office, but mostly at home), and being able to have a mostly desktop experience while moving around, would be nice. However, while at home, I’ll use my 32 inch LG. Working from the couch, with a sick kid, would be better with the 16 inch. Not sure how that fits into the mix, but I could see having the extra space nice while your working from a non traditional office desk would be nice. Gary, you seem cool. I’d let you be my boss.

I just pulled the trigger on the 16” M1 Pro 32 GB RAM 2 TB SSD. I went for the 16” because I value the extra screen space for the video editing I’m planning to do as I get serious about my music production RU-vid channel and because my eyes aren’t getting any younger! Also, I know there probably isn’t much to worry about in terms of thermals but I felt like the extra peace of mind that the 16” brings to the table is worth it as I am viewing this purchase as a long term investment. Edit: oh yeah, and the larger batteries are always nice!

I’d rather have the screen real estate every time. A smaller screen is a limitation as much as it is a benefit. Sure, it’s lighter in your backpack or bag, but that comes at a productivity and quality of life cost. For such an expensive device, I can’t justify spending similar money for a castrated version. The 1.2 lbs difference isn’t going to cause you to blow out your back. The Army used to cram 100 lbs in my rucksack. 1.2 lbs is noticeable, but barely. I care more about what the device is like when I’m actually using it. I never understood the “but it doesn’t work well on the flight tray” argument. Nothing works well on a seat tray. Listen to a podcast, and resume work when you get off the flight. I’m not making a massive purchase like this based off of fringe use cases. To each their own, but I don’t see how this is even a debate unless it’s about the money.

I have the 14" Max 10-core 24-GPU 32Gb and 1Tb SSD. This is a travel computer for me, assuming I get to travel again. I shoot photos and video, write travelogues, and keep up with all the normal online stuff as I move around the world. The 14" is essential for travellers both for weight and size reasons, unless the 13" MacBook Air meets your more basic needs. I have it set to Low Power Mode and it slightly reduces the display brightness as defaults, which gives me significantly more battery life. When I need the power of the Max SoC it's there, but 95% of the time the Max functions like a Pro SoC - just as efficient.

While I like the idea of having a bigger screen to-go, but I think 14” is good enough. I wouldn’t need to spec up so much that it would stress the laptop to warrant a loud fan, but I’ve owned a laptop that was louder for the last several years. Right now, neither are in price range. I guess I’ll just have to wait and save to upgrade. I’m sure these might hit the refurbish store soon 😅. At work, I’ve worked with the previous intel 16” MacBook Pro and it was a tad unwieldy to travel with or fit on a an average sized desk with an average sized monitor. I know some of the dimensions shrunk, but it still seems cumbersome plus the weight difference too. If I had the money, I’d still buy the 14” because I still don’t need all the power that the 16” can squeeze out or even an M1 Max chip.

Laptops are supposed to be light and portable. The added weight of the 16" MBP does not bother me at all. To me that added weight of the 16" is mostly in the bigger battery which I think is necessary to compensate for the bigger power draw of the M1 Max processor. Obviously, I think that the M1 Max is better suited to the 16" form factor than the 14" form factor. All in all, I find that my 16" max'd out M1 Max is highly portable and immensely functional.

I would have taken either one and been fine. Same specs M1Pro 10/16, 16RAM, 1TB. I went with the 16. But the way I made my decision was 16 has bigger charger, screen, chassis (heat dissipation), and battery life for just 200 more dollars. Which you’ll also get better resale value when you upgrade in 5 or so years. I went with the MacBook Pro 16 and Studio Display vs Mac studio to replace my 2015 iMac and 2018 MacBook Pro. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t when I thought about it. With the same specs the cost is the same. Or close enough. But with the laptop you can dock it and use it like a studio desktop and have that added portability factor for work/traveling. Got $1900 out of reselling old devices vs trade in. MacBook 16 1TB currently 350 off at BestBuy. Display 100 off at apple store while educational discounts are going.

One more point on the weight difference: some airlines restrict carry-on bag weight (e.g., Emirates 7kgs). Carrying the lighter laptop will allow more weight in the bag for cameras & lenses, etc - the sort of stuff that you really don’t want to check into the hold.

Did you do a video on how MacBook Pro 14 compares with the M1 12.9 inch iPad Pro? I think that would be a great comparison, especially given how expensive these computers are, and how they compare in terms of functionality.

Both have the same XDR display. that's more of a Laptop vs iPad topic. Which software programs you need to run vs iOS apps you run is the difference. Plenty of those vids on RU-vid

Very good video ! I was offered a second hand 14 and 16 inch m1 macbook pro 16 gb memory and 1 TB SSD for 1500$ and 1600$ and they look both like new really, no scratch at all ! The 14 inch has even 2 years Apple care still as well … I couldnt decide which one to keep and as they are both at such good price and state i kept them both … 😅 What do you think ? A bit crazy ? The 14 inch is more portable and i love the screen of the 16 inch !

The new M1 Pro 14" has a black background under the keyboard. The one you used in this video has the old style metal background. Was it actually the 13" M1? Please explain.

What is your opinion between 16gb and 32gb? Although 16gb send to be plenty now, and almost perform are well.... Do you think that will be the case 5 years from now? I will probably have whatever I but now, for that long

Through a happy concatenation of circs I found myself in the lucky situation where I could get both - so I did. A 14” M1 Pro (rather than Max - because, better battery life), and a 16” M1Max (because, power). So I’m spending all day switching between the two (they’re synced via iCloud & Dropbox so I can work on either seamlessly). I’m really enjoying having the 14” on my lap to do things like edit websites, and of course it’s perfectly capable of editing films etc especially as a travel computer, which is why I got it. But if I had to choose one it would be the 16”, because it’s a powerhouse, and editing video on it is a pleasure whereas with the 14” it really needs an external monitor if you’re going to work on a video timeline for a few hours. So: I love them both, but the 16” for me is the essential one, the 14” a ‘nice to have’ as a travel and cafe editor.

Damn, how could you edit in a 16" display? For me, a productive editing session need at least a 30" display.
@wildcall1
@wildcall1 2 года назад
@@edimarrodrigrove3377 I have a couple of 32” monitors on the way. But am not sure I’ll use them that much. For the last year or two I’ve had a 15” + 27” combination and most of the time didn’t bother turning the 27” on, editing quite complex timelines in Premiere. It’s nice to have as an option, but I also like editing on the couch… the brain just adapts.

I came from a 2021 model MSI creator 15. 10875h, 32gb ram, 2070 super max q. tons of power and performance. also had 1000 nit 100% adobe rgb screen. at1600$ it was a great deal and a powerhouse of a laptop. I borrowed a friends m1 16'' and within a few days asked if I could buy it. what a please to edit videos on. the msi had more power, but I love this computer and still does everything I need it to in adobe suite without a flinch.

I’m getting the 14” to replace my early 2015 MacBook Pro. Like a lot of other people, I have been wanting to upgrade my MacBook for quite some time now but the lack of ports frustrated the hell out of me, so I was ecstatic to see Apple finally got their heads out of their asses and made the “pro” an actual laptop rather than an overpriced MacBook Air. I’m getting the 14” because I always liked smaller computers and if I need more screen space… I’ll just use the sidecar feature with my iPad Pro. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The info on the higher power is inaccurate. It's only available on the max chip macs. It's not on my 16 mbp m1 pro . Actually, mine only shows a Low Power option.

The $200 difference to me is negligible. The real question is how big a screen you want and if max performance is critical.

So unsure what to do. I use Blender a lot and currently have a MBP 15". I do like going to coffee shops to work and it seems like the 16 will be too cumbersome to carry around, but who wouldn't want the extra screen size. So confused...

The 16'MBP is an absolute beast, I wanted a bigger display so I don't need to use my huawei monitor that looks like ass when paired with a macbook (Looks great on windows so I guess its some scailing issue), I can fit 2 tabs of code at the same time and the fans don't ever spin due to the top-notch cooling it gets from the additional space. I got mine with 32GB ram for 2K on amazon (Brand new, not refurbished), I didn't know it cost 2900$ (With the same specs) just 10 months ago...

There is no other way to get a beautiful 16 inch screen from Apple so I went with the 16in. The MacBook Air M1 is perfect for travel. People needing the power of the M1 Max most likely would need the bigger screen for better productivity.

The 16” is only $200 more than a 14” configured with the same specs. For $200, you get so much more computer. I got the 16” M1 Pro and it’s honestly spoiled me. Can’t look at smaller screens anymore. Battery life is just as good as the 13” M1 as well.

with applecare 3 year warranty being 100 bucks more on 16 inch, its really 300 bucks more. also 14" is much easier to carry with you and you can plug it on bigger external displays at home.

Just ordered a base model 14" for $1,799 during Amazon Prime day. That made the price delta $700 to the 16" device, and that was too much to justify.
