Are you getting the amazingly fast and power efficient 2021 M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro Laptop but can’t decide on the 14-inch or 16-inch model? By far the hardest decision for me this year with tech is which size MacBook Pro to get, the 14” or the 16”? Are you also in the same boat?
Let’s look at the similarities and differences between the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros to see if the deciding between the two can be easier. I’ll also share which one I chose at the end, I think… for now…

Laptops are so compact nowadays that one can’t really say the 16” is not portable. It’s basically as portable as a 2010 13”. When you consider the 16” has a larger screen (relatively smaller notch and menu bar), larger trackpad, better speakers, better thermals and larger battery that not only will keep you going for longer but also have a longer life span as it won’t be so taxed… all that for just 200 more? But… it is nice to have something that is so portable in the 14”, but I’m here to do work, not have a laptop that’s as easy to transport as possible.

...it is the most difficult question. In terms of performance and most other specs, the 14" would be fine for my needs. However being used a 5k Apple Display (27") for the last 3 years, 14 inch just seems tiny to me. Also, if you really need more space and don't have to walk around all day with it, one can connect an iPad 12.9" pro to the 14" via sidecar and end up with more real estate than the 16", and hardly more weight. Menues and buttons/ sliders on the iPad, main viewer on the Macbook.

I cherish each moment that my biggest problem is choosing between 14" and 16". And it should be said, that I have never been in so much doubt concerning my Macbook purchase decision.

@@Tech4Baba I ended up with the 16" and haven't regretted it one bit. For me bigger screen is just better all-round. Even though 16" weighs a lot, I got used to it really quickly and don't even think about it anymore.

The 16” is great if you want to be mobile within the same area (ie home or workplace). If you work “on the road” then the 14” would be more suitable. Though you can make both work for any situation.

The trackpad is too big. Your palm rests on it and it causes unecessary gestures.

This is the answer. I got the 14in but I'm no longer a student. Mostly stay at home and plug in to my 32" monitor. If i want to unplug and want to do some coding in bed or the couch, the 14 is too cramped. Will upgrade to M2 16in when it comes out for sure.

Thanks for the video! Great comparison! I'm going to wait until I go into an Apple store and check them out in person before I make a decision. I'm currently rocking a 15" 2012 MBP Retina (this thing's still a beast) so regardless of what I choose, it's going to be a massive upgrade for me. I'm very excited.

Solid take! I opted for the 14" because I could pick it up with one hand comfortably. My older 15" always felt too heavy. I'll have to see how happy I am with the 14" screen size after some real use.

Excellent Review and Explanation! I ordered the 14 but after going to my local Best Buy I had to order the 16 inch and will be returning the 14 inch! I plan on working with Final Cut Prob and Lightroom Classic. I already have a 13 M1 MacBook Air at home, so that can be used for portability if necessary. I have the 2017 27 inch IMac so that’s my other option. I don’t have a monitor set up like some people do. So this is going to be amazing to edit on. Great review! Thank you! Keep it up!

It's more than just the weight of the 16", it has a very different ergonomic profile compared to the 14. You get a bigger trackpad with the 16", but the keyboard is also pushed much farther in. I tried both for a month and kept the 14". As someone with smaller hands, I found the position for my hands to be much more comfortable on the 14". The 14" also feels much less awkward in my lap, or on one leg, or in one hand when the lid was open. I felt that I needed to use the 16" farther away from my lap in order to have an acceptable viewing distance for the larger screen. I can see why the 16" would be totally preferred for people with larger/stronger hands or eyesight issues.

yeah, monkeytype 1 minute test i got 160 wpm on the 14 inch, on 16 inch it was 138.

You should never use your laptop above your lap directly because of EMF radiation and the effects they cause on reducing testosterone and overall harm of your organs.. It is actually best practice to use the laptop towards your knees, or even better a laptop tray if you are on the sofa, coupled with an ethernet port, Wi-Fi turned off, and Bluetooth turned off, which minimises the amount of EMF radiation being exposed.

Since i use the MacBook Pro mostly on the go and without external screen (just recently here and there this Sidecar Feature on the iPad as 2nd screen) but its just too small the 11" iPad Air for serious work even as 2nd screen. I was also nearly buying the 14" (with 1TB SSD) but i was then thinking about the really nice, big screen, the 100Wh battery and the noticable better speakers so i was just going for the 16" base model as well. In my opinion only the 13" Base model MacBook Air (M1) or the M1 Pro 16" are the only good performance/price options, at worst the M2 Mac Mini included if its really ONLY Desktop Usage. To be honest the 16" MacBook Pro with 2kg is more handcharming than the very thin iPad Air 5 with a basic cover. The thin iPad is very uncomfortable to hold on, the "thickness" of the MacBook Pro is so much better still not to heavy (for a "regular" sized notebook)

I bought the 14in and after morning of setting it up my wrists are really sore from the hard edge of the MacBook. My older Macbook is bigger and I haven't had this problem with it. So.. will be upgrading to the 16in! Thank you for a great review. It was useful to see the sizes of the different keyboard areas.

great review!!!! I personally went with the 14' because of portability, and I'm not losing in terms of performance. The 16' is a beautiful machine and that screen, omg!!! But for me, the 14' works better.

If you go for the M1 Max then 16” will give you better sustained performance due to the better cooling.

I wanted the 16. Then I went to the store to check them out. 16 was way too heavy to be carried around and decided I should go with the 14. Couple of days ago I went to the store again and now the 16 didn't seem that big anymore. This is way too difficult. If I only could get them both for one whole day and I would know. I really want to use it also as "laptop" outside in garden and I would need to keep the 16 on my lap for couple of hours to know, if it's ok for that. Do you have tested the 16 on your lap for any extended period of time and how did it feel? Blood still circulating on both feet? ;)

16 inch! Most of my work is journalistic and writing and the extra real estate mean that Apps like Scrivener and Atticus are unbeatable on the larger screen. Yep! The 16 inch is the keeper for me. It means I have a desktop (almost) wherever I use this laptop.

I have the M1 13" MacBook Pro. That thing can edit pretty much any video. I got it in April. I'd get the 14" one since I need a portable machine. I need those extra ports on the laptop.

I went for the 16”. I had a 17” windows laptop and was worried 16” would be too small. It isn’t. I don’t take it out much and I also have it hooked up to an ultra wide monitor when I work. But it’s nice to have a nice sized screen when working away from my ultra wide.

Hi ! I am jumping from Macbook 15inch 2013 with a small trackpad.. i was always using the bigger screen , but I am not sure about the super huge trackpad in the new Macbook. Did you have hard time to get used to it? Should I consider the 14inch instead?

Went with 16. Never had anything other than a 13 before. The extra power, better thermals, and battery sold me. It has other better features over the 14 but those were most important for me. It really isnt that heavy ir big to me. I think it can be a bad experience on a plane bit will test that out soon.

Great review! After receiving a defective 16” M1Pro on Nov 1, I FINALLY got a replacement delivered Monday, Dec 6. I enjojed using a 17” for ten yrs!! I didn’t hesitate. Very happy with the 16”. Like you, I used the 13” M1 Air for almost a year. The portability is great, but I missed the big screen. I do tons of music recording and editing; and a bit of video. So the more screen real estate the better! Sidecar with my 11” iPad Pro is terrific. I just got the 16”, and still have lots of software to install, so I haven’t yet gotten busy with it. Can I ask you what 32” monitor you use? I can’t seem to find a nice compromise; ESPECIALLY with regards to thunderbolt ports. Thanks again! Liked and subscribed. I especially look forward to your vid on astrophotography!!

So I borrowed it from November til July. The wait for the 16" M1 MacBook Pro was painful! BTW, what are your thoughts on the new $1600 5k Apple Monitor? A bit pricey for me.

@@Archdrew901 Immediately after powering up, there was a distortion on the lower part of the screen, covering the dock. It was the top part of the screen, only split into hazy thin horizontal bars. I called immediately, and did all the things they suggested. No Go. Apple wanted to blame UPS, but it was hand delivered to me from the UPS driver in an undamaged packing box. I took pics of course. Very cool experience getting a new MacBook Pro!! I purchased AppleCare Plus. I must say, the experience was horrible. I always held Apple in the highest regard. But now, I would NEVER recommend buying like this. Go to a store. Or the refurb site. But new straight from China? Never again. The second day, I was still trying to resolve this. While on the phone with AppleCare, the screen went completely dark; except for a faint backlight. Then the nightmare really began. And you know, never even an apology. Nothing. Getting it replaced took over a month. Interesting that still, MANY apps and softwares STILL do not run natively. It's a beast of a machine, but here we are, five months later, and it still is running Intel optimized apps thru Rosetta 2. And that's the REAL tech marvel. Without Rosetta 2, Apple silicon would basically be HIGHLY overpriced word processors ...

Allegedly the M1 Max is clocked lower in the 14" than the 16" due to thermal capacity of the chassis. 16" MacBook Pro, M1 Max with 32 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD. Playing HDR content on this puppy is _gorgeous._ 😁

Short and to the point video. Since you have used all different screen sizes, can you mention that is the 14in screen good enough for editing photos? If I don’t plan to use an external monitor. How small is the 14in in real life compared to 15in. Currently using a 15in windows laptop.

I am coming from a 2013 15” MacBook Pro Retina. I enjoy the screen real estate but it’s been a battle axe lugging it around. In terms of weight, how does the 16” fare? I am tempted because of my proximity to the screen real estate but I don’t want fall into the trap again of lugging around a heavy laptop for another 8/9 years.

The 16" FAR out weighs (no pun intended) the 14" in over-all value. Despite people complaining about size and weight, the 16" is far smaller and lighter than many of the 15" laptops out there, in recent years, and even now! ....to me it's quite smaller, half as thick, and lighter! The speakers sound much better, the screen has more real estate and is far more viewable, even spec'd the same, the 16" has a slight performance advantage, better thermals, it also has better battery life, and a lot more.....

I went with the 16" MBP. The extra weight is not a problem for me and I like the added features of the 16" (i.e., larger screen size, better thermals, larger battery, and the High Power setting in System Preferences). I figure that if you want real portability, go with an M1 MacBook Air or M1 MBP. If you just want to save $200, go with the 14" MBP. I wanted a beast of a machine. For me the choice was easy... I got the fully loaded 16". The only thing I didn't get is the 8TBs of SSD. I only need 600GBs so I bought 2TBs instead. 👍😎

think of it like they're both good options, with distinct advantages. I personally use it docked 80% of the time so i went for the 14". I used to own a 16" and it was just a little cumbersome in public.

I just can't seem to decide. I ordered the 16 inch but it feels enormous. like having a desktop on my lap ! I also need to stretch out my arms more.

You could also use a smaller window to work on so you can pull the notebook further to you! I was reading your comment and always though how people can work with that tiny stuff in scaling mode for more screen estate. Now i just tried to pull the 16" further to me on the lap - except that it feels a bit uncomfortable to use yet, the 16,2" really feels like a Desktop. The issue with the 14"... its NOTICABLE smaller in screen size and battery, but not noticable better for mobile usage/carrying around. A friend with a 14" M1 Max always cry about his battery life, even for basic tasks. Me on the other hand i cant care less about battery anymore with the 16" M1 Pro since it lasts literally for 2-5 days with about 50-80% battery used.

it's not because we can't lift it lol, it's because the difference is noticeable when moving it in and out of a backpack, carrying on public transport, using in libraries, coffee shops and airports & planes. You may not notice, but i notice. I used to own a 16" and it was just a little cumbersome for me... i felt vulnerable using it (especially on planes). Choice is good, there is no need to scoff at other peoples preferences.

Let me add my 2 cents, if you work a lot out of 32" monitor then 14", but if you work on a road only occasionally, then 16".

The screen on the 14 inch is absolutely beautiful. Yes, the screen on the 16th inch is better, but not tremendously so, and the 14th inch does not ever get hot to the touch on heavy load and the fans are not loud at all. When you are taking about upgrading there is not a lot of difference in price but not overall. I have the 14th inch now and loving it. The smoothness of the trackpad, the gorgeous screen, the portablity and yes, you can play games with the cloud base Nvidia Geforce now, with a strong internet connection, or native intel base mac games with Rosetta, and unless you are a hard core gamer that has to have th highest frame rate possible and the ultimate in smoothnes, rather than just very satisfactory, then get a gaming laptop. Otherwise this laptip covers everything very satisfactory, it does not mean I will not go with the 16 inch in the furture because I love bigger screens.. The battery is also very satisfactory. A day and a half use a little above normal use wit the brightness turned down.

How does 16" for a student who types a lot ?? Does 16" feel so heavy?? It's just 2.1 kg?? Some people call 2.2 kg Alienware laptop as portable but 2.1 16" as heavy?? Does this feel so heavy in bag???

Went with the 16 because the last thing you want is a fan coming on when you’re recording…. Bigger screen bigger battery bigger speakers bigger cooling no throttling…. Signed me up… lol I find it absolutely hilarious people complain about the weight…. What a baby I pack my guitars around all over the place they weigh twice as much…. Too funny they act as though there crippled and they’re only young….. they probably complain about packing the groceries in the house…. Maybe they have somebody do it for them🤣

@@FuranGameplays i’ve watched hundreds of RU-vid commentators that state the fan coming on and have recorded it… It is noticeable as to how noticeable? It’s definitely audible I just don’t wanna take any chances better safe than sorry just my opinion….. it may never ever come on for my usage but I’d rather side on caution….

There's a 300 dollar difference between the two with the same spec, not 200. There's a 500 dollar difference between both base models. That's pretty considerable

It is a 16inch screen in the same chassis size of the older 15inch MacBook pros. They just made the screen bigger by minimising the bevels and pushing the menu up into the notch section. Similarly the 14inch is in the same chassis size as the older 13inch MacBook pros.

You better not bother too much about the "one inch"... I still have a 2010 15" (15,4" screen) MacBook Pro and its heavier and bigger in ALL measurements than the 16" M1/M2 Pro(16,2" screen). Once i was getting used to the bigger screen and more compact 16" M1 Pro.... it was hard to use the 2010 15" at all... "small" screen, HUGE bezel, bad looking (TN Panel) especially at slight angles. Only the (in my opinion) better feeling keyboard of the "old" Macs/Apple Keyboards and for writing stuff the 15" is my "throw around" and office device, but i can also use the 2011 Apple Bluetooth keyboard on the new M1 so its pretty much barely used anymore (its getting very warm, doesnt do much or fast before battery is down etc)
