The Capital One Venture X is taking away benefits, making travel credits worse, and overall, just going downhill. Plus, it’s just really confusing & hard to get approved for this card, and I know this first-hand because my wife Lucia got denied for the Venture X a couple months ago.
So, in this video I am going to discuss some reasons for why you might want to actually avoid the Capital One Venture X, and I’ll discuss 3 Better Credit Cards that you should consider getting instead.

Capital One really bugged me when they removed the restaurant access for the Venture X. Now, with Chase and the Reserve, it doesn't look so bad ;)

Venture X is a great catch all card at 2x, paired with a Savor One it’s a great duo. I think the only ones that don’t like the Venture X are those that get denied.

Not true at all. In the cap one duo, your savorone is your main earner. The vx is just a 2x card with extra steps where you’re prepaying for travel and an annual fee. “Effective -5” my ass. Priority pass is useless in the states, and enjoy your 3 overcrowded cap one lounges in random airports most people don’t use. Starting to think I’d rather have gone the CSR route since at least their lounges account for space, there are better drink options, and they’re not overcrowded to shit.

I’ve never had experiences with any issuers customer service as bad as I did with Capital One haha- I’ve heard that Venture X specific customer service may be better, but I’ve only had headaches on lines with Capital One. And haha even though there are negatives, this video mainly served to take the counter argument on the Venture X, but if a $300 Travel Credit & 10k bonus miles is all you care about then the Venture X is totally fine, and it’s why I plan to apply myself in a couple weeks haha. I'm also concerned about the future trends on the Venture X and a bit bitter that my wife keeps getting denied for it haha. Thankfully there are alternative cards that do the same (or better) things, as you pointed out. Love this one Matt!

2024 is turning out to be the year of the nerf! Lots of reasons that the C1VX is good, but also bad, like you mentioned in this video! For me, the lack of transparency in credit card approval is a big deal, especially since they hard pull all 3 credit bureaus on application! Having said that, I think I eventually want to try to get this card.. or maybe have P2 do it since she probably has a better chance than me to get it! Great video Matt!

Thank you Stan! And yeah exactly- you never really know with Cap One how your application is going to look so it's always a risk. The Venture X is definitely not alone in the nerfing, but it's always important to take a look at both sides of the equation for those to where this may be a huge deal.

I would love it if you made a video of this credit card trio I am running right now. Altitude Reserve, Amex Platinum, and the Hilton Aspire. The credits/benefits on this trio is so OP. The 4.5% cash back value on the Reserve, lounge access and credits on the Platinum, and the Status + FNC on the aspire just make this trio so worth it. If you ever want to mess around and make a video I would for sure love to see it haha

LOL making a huge deal about using the portal for a 300 credit. AMEX platinum travel credit is way more restrictive. Lounges are way too crowded so removing low tier cards from accessing the lounges is a good thing. Lounges arent meant to be like being at the gate

That's a fair point for sure! I think the only worrying thing is if they add those lounge restrictions to extend to the Venture X. Nice work, Matt! Whenever a bank advertises higher multipliers if you use their portal, I ignore them and pretend the multipliers don’t exist. For those in the points and miles game (plus the travel bloggers), portals in general are likely not worth using. I’m curious about how many people not into points and miles would value the high multipliers for portal bookings.

I just open a USbank savings and checking doing $800 bonus and at the same time building a relationship with USbank so that when I apply for the reserve I won’t have any issues

The travel portal has an AMAZING UI and has price match. Arguably the best portal. They took lounges from the Venture, not the venture X and added a $50 credit in it's place. Seems important to note. Presidents circle hurts(pun intended) but it is cheaper than other other cards you mentioned

If you have a Venture X the lounge changes are good just like the AMEX platinum changes that disallowed free guests at centurion lounges for most cardholders was great. The lounges are too crowded and some people are bringing their whole sports team along as guests.

I have been holding out on premium travel cards 1 because I am going to cancel my Gold card next year to justify the fee more. 2 I really can't make my mind up on what card I want lol. Can't believe im saying this but I think the US Bank Reserve will be the one I get. Just for what I do and the 3x on mobile wallet purchases ( can pretty much use that for anything) is pretty legit IMO. The venture was number one on my list but Im having the same issues as you did with getting approved. And honestly with Capital One changing so much worries me a lot.

I am eligible for the Ritz Carlton Card in September and I am considering cancelling my Venture X. I could make use of the $300 credit and getting 10K anniversary miles is a nice plus, but like you said you are tied to their travel portal. I am in pop up jail for the Hilton Aspire card, but like your situation with the Venture X, I am taking this as a blessing in disguise and moving away from Hilton and their ridiculous quarterly credits and focusing more on Marriott.

These reasons and having myself not great experiences with being a customer at capital one has bothered me. Also, my savor one has such a low limit so I can only use it for half of my expenses. Might just get the csp and marriot boundless and call it a day.

Customer service is not great and the starting limit is not enough. Don’t see myself really needing the chase reserve. Will be moving overseas in the Middle East, and will be only traveling overseas. Pairing the preffered and marriot boundless seems simple.

Capital one customer since 2019, first card was platinum for 2K second was quicksilver for 1500, and third was bass pro for 500. Recently applied for the savor one and got approved for 10K ! After maxing out my cards and using them irresponsibly I finally paid them off not too long ago and it’s safe to say my credit is in good shape now ! (Proud moment getting 10k) I heard of people having trouble getting big limits on the savor one so I guess I’m doing something right now. I think I’ll give it a shot and apply for the venture X after 6 months and try the infamous duo !

I think the citi premier card is a much better card than the US Bank card, but it’s point multipliers are not quite as good as the Venture X. At $95 the Citi card is the best card in its class and punches above its weight, I wouldn’t want the US Bank card even if it was a $95 a year card, with no travel partners and only 1x on regular purchases it just doesn’t bring the value. The chase Sapphire card was my 1st choice because they have my preferred travel partners, but they denied me while Venture X approved me.

Oh wow that's interesting! I haven't heard of that happening too often with the Venture X approving you and the Sapphire Reserve not approving you. But totally makes sense- The Citi Premier definitely packs a punch for a Card with only a $95 annual fee.

Banks are tricky especially Chase, Amex approved my Amex Platinum while LMAO/24 although I have a solid 8yr history and many cards with them already. The Venture X is solid glad you were able to get approved for it.

Capital One has a pre-approval tool. Did they pre-approve you, but then denied you when you actually applied?

I accidentally ran the Pre Approval for the regular Capital One, not the Venture X specific one. I was pre approved for the Regular Venture Card so I had confidence I would get approved for the Venture X as well but unfortunately did not. Thanks for watching Allen!

C1 is whack I have three cards with them, only one I care for is the Savor One. I have too large of a profile to ever hold the Venture X so I opted for the Amex Platinum with no regrets.

Matt: don’t listen to the haters out there that are ragging on you getting denied. I think these are very legitimate concerns about the card; concerns I share and have noted time and time again. The card is extremely portal-dependent, the insurances are not as good, and the lounge access is the worst of the big 3. You’re essentially prepaying for travel and you must live on the portal if you want any kind of elevated value. I’d rather just book my travel on the bilt mastercard, where at least I can get 2x of the far more valuable bilt points for booking direct

It’s not The Happening. It’s The Cheapening. The BX and CSR feel like a classic tragedy of the commons situation whereby so many people are overusing a resource that it winds up being ruined for everyone. These days, VX makes sense if you have a bank relationship with C1. If not, put it on a bus.

Thanks for the video. I was sketchy about applying for this card. But my inquiries were down. And I filled out a pre approval application. And I also heard rumors About low credit limits if you are approved. To make a short story longer. I was approved for the card with a 30000 limit. I do currently have the Amex Morgan Stanley platinum card. Like all cards, it has its pluses. And negatives. A lot of. The negatives that you're mentioning are what if. I'm an older man and it seems to me that this younger generation.Any little obstacle is too much. You mean I have to use the travel portal. Those bastards

Same here after a lot of mistakes and irresponsibly using my capital one cards and maxing out my cards it’s safe to say my credit is in much better condition Cap One customer since 2019 and I just applied for the Savor One and got approved for 10k. I heard people complain that they don’t get good limits for this card or the VX, but I haven’t had that issue thank God. I am going to apply for the Venture X next we’ll see how it goes lol.
