does crop insurance help cover what you lose when you have a dry year like this and only get about half as much as you'd get in an average year?
@WelkerFarms
@WelkerFarms 10 месяцев назад
It will give some but not much. Because we have been growing crop on the same land each year and not chem fallowing, our base bushels per acre are around 13. So if our crop makes 10, federal crop insurance will pay us 3 bushels. If we went 50% fallow and 50% crop each year our base bushels would be around 18-20. But we also pay a premium to be part of federal crop. In the end it will help but not excessive. Because we farm as cheap as we can, this year's crop will pay for the cost of farming but we won't be putting much in the bank for next season. And on another note many do not know. We have taken very low wages these past few years. I could make more money stocking shelves at Walmart than what we've made from the farm these past few years. The difference is social media has given us a good secondary income which has allowed us to invest in new home builds and such. It's pretty depressing to be honest but when we get back to normal yields the farm and families will be financially stable.

@@WelkerFarms Thanks for the deeper than normal explanation of how it works. I'd imagine it would take a huge farm to allow 50% of the fields to lay fallow each year, wouldn't it? Thing about really good farmers is they are always an optimist!!!
@pennev2
@pennev2 10 месяцев назад
Then don't move to Australia . Here you are on your own , no insurance . They even call the road maintenance tax (excise@ 44cents/liter ) we don't pay on each liter of "off road" diesel a subsidy , which makes up pretty much all the "subsidies "we get . @@WelkerFarms

I love your reply because I understand it well. I have been told by people, "well you farmers get all this gov. money and insurance if things don't go right"... but they have no clue to the reality of it (No we don't get tons of cash like they think)... in 21' we banked 20k and that was heartbreaking and tough..because out of that over 10k went for property taxes. fortunately we have no mortgages but still, it had us dipping into savings. 22' we did real good, but really when you add in all the things we needed to take care of on the property that we couldn't in 21', it all kind of balanced out, and covered the loss of 21' in the end... We have had this farm since 58' and we have gone through all the ups and downs and we will pop out each time I have no doubt. But people just do not realize what it takes to run a farm and especially one the size of the operation your running at Welker..... $299 dollar bearings and you need 8 of them, new agg tires at 600, 700, 1200 or more a piece, let alone the regular things a household needs and etc...etc..etc..... You can dump 10 or 15K in a week just on repairs sometimes... Fortunately we have another business as well which offsets the farm in tough times. You guys hang tough.. We have God on our side and He will not let us down, never has and never will..@@WelkerFarms

So much to say about this video! Seeing both families was precious. All high energy. The first montage with the rolling hills was beautiful. I visited that area many years ago during wheat harvest. And, Leg-Arms, I feel your pain. Many years ago I was working for a company that was developing a floating cutter bar for IH, (wasn’t Case-IH yet.). I was in SE Missouri working with a farmer cutting soybeans. It was Friday afternoon and there was a forecast for rain on Saturday. The crew was going to cut late, everything was going smoothly so I decided to go to my motel, looking forward to a leisurely Saturday. I get a call on Saturday morning: we bent the cutter bar. So I spent all Saturday straightening that cutter bar using presses, torches, wrenches, etc., to get it functioning for Monday. Sorry for the long story but your experience pulled it out of the old grey matter! Godspeed!

Can't remember how old I was, but I was pretty young and travelling back to Cornwall with my Mum, and it's just the two of us on the train. The crew let me into the driver's cab and told me the handbrake wheel was the steering wheel. Then they told me where the horn was... I made a LOT of noise.

I’m always amazed that I’ve never seen crop lifters on any of the American farms that I watch , they do a great job lifting crops a little so you don’t need the cutter bar quite so close to the stones . I had them on my machines all the time . Good luck guys .
@levihillsman7843

A farm i worked for would run them iff the crop was laid over but someof them Oregon weeds will rip them off. Some machines will chew them up, some wont.
@WelkerFarms
@WelkerFarms 10 месяцев назад
We actually have honeybee crop lifters and use them in saw fly damage. But they don't do much for short peas as the pods are only a few inches above the ground. So you have to cut the stem off as low as possible to get the pods in the header.
@Prouddadofone
@Prouddadofone 10 месяцев назад
Lifters can help under certain conditions in grain crops. They really tangle up in peas, and you still have to shave the ground sometimes 🤷‍♂️ And they can be real hard on the guards and sections in stony land. Been there done that!

The fact that you guys do so much of your own maintenance/repairs has to save you a LOT of money. I'm always shocked at how you guys can fix almost all your own equipment. Having the right tools helps, but you still need the know how. Well done!
@jamesatlka

This comes out of necessity, if they had to pay someone else to repair and maintain the equipment they use in the best harvest years it would be extremely difficult to make a profit and in drought years it would be impossible to make a profit or just break even.

Our rains have just started down here. Tough for many folks. I was really hoping you guys would see good moisture this year after the consistent dry years. @delbutler885 that's true but honestly it's something they love. You take barren ground and put crop to it its a lovely thing. I did harvesting for almost 8 yrs and I tell you what your in a combine in the middle of a wheat field and you watch the wind move those plants its like one of the most gorgeous things there is to see. I could be hrs and hrs in a combine and by myself and I felt a peace and calmness over my spirit. It was breath taking. I am fortunate for several things in my life. My farming background and my military service. We didn't do much crop farming we had cattle but the 80 acres we had was dedicated to wheat and beans. And I use to ride in those silver seeder gleaners and it was awesome.... I'm fortunate to work harvest for a period and we ran 2388 CASE IH. And Montana was one of our big stops. I loved every minute up there.. so I commend the welkers for keeping there farming family going.... ita a gift from god... God bless you guys.

You haven't had the "opportunity" to grow your skills. along with increasing header sizes. Everyone who farms, or grew up on a farm, has had something like this happen. Give yourself a break.

Sorry to see y’all having another bad year with no rain!! But don’t feel bad here in La. we haven’t had a rain seance June 1. It’s so hot down here till it is plum miserable!! It’s 105 degrees today and heat index 120. We have never seen this. We get about 62 inches in a year and we are at 21 inches as of the end of August. It’s really sad. Hope next year god will bless all farmers with a great crop next year!! Take care and love watching y’all videos!!🙋🏼‍♂️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Those combines are such versatile machines - they even have an integrated mower function for those pesky green weeds! 😜😁😇

Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Sorry about the breakdowns. Had to replace that header belt shaft and motor. That got the belt working again. Scott said some damage to a cutting bar. Hopefully it can be fixed. I know these things distract from harvest, but hang in there. You folks run a lot of crops through your combined. So it is understandable. You reviewed the pea harvest with us. Not the best but is workable overall. More moisture would have been helpful for sure. You had good bushels where you had moisture. I think the world of all of you Welkers. I wish there was something I could do to provide you the moisture you need. Feel bad for you on crop production. My prayers are always with you for rain and good crop growing weather. May god watch over you!!!!!! Colby is always ready for a rabbit run. Loved riding in the combine with bob. Great companion dog. The drone footage at the video beginning was great. Love the drone footage. Once again, congratulations on finishing your pea harvest. I trust it will be enough for this years expectation with what you got for moisture. About it I guess. Thanks for everything Welkers. My prayers once again to you!!!!! So enjoy being with all of you!!!!! The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.
