Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you brought this up, it's largely the reason I left my old company. They took it too far, like you discussed, they'd make dumb descisions based on the fact they wanted an answer or descision faster than they had time to compile and analyze information. Great YTCREATORS discussion, great life lesson too!

One of my biggest pet peeves is having to do anything twice. I never want to come back and fix something I should have just done right the first time. Hustle culture sometimes makes us forget that it's okay to actually take our time and care about what we're doing.

Preach on brother. Do the best you can with what you have. I started podcasting in 2005 in my brother's basement after going through a divorce and bankruptcy. Being a musician I had a beat-up Shure SM58 and figured out how to run that into my computer. I prayed nobody flushed the toilet (as the flush pipe was right behind me) and I started. It was the best I could do with what I had. 18 years later, I'm in a much better place. Great video. You do good my friend.

The sayings I have always gone by are "Perfection is the enemy of Good" and "Perfection is, in and of itself, a flaw". I constantly have to fight a tendency to keep iterating and making something better to the point that it takes so long that I could have done 5 or 10 things instead of 1.

maybe their point is "do not put everything you want on this product, work inside your limitations and time and make the product we need right now"
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I think you're right. I believe (if my research was on point) that the whole goal was to get the product development team to understand that there was a process whereby other teams working on the product would be their own system of checks and balances and that customer feedback was a big part of the product development process. But when I hear RU-vidrs saying this and it makes me cringe. I think it's bad advice out of context, especially for creators. I've lost count of how many channels I've coached whose main problem was they published every single week but their channel wasn't growing. I'm sure you've seen it too. I have to tell these Creators to stop publishing and start thinking about how to make content that connects. Done isn't better. Better is better. Focus on improving not just getting it done.

LOVED this! I think Steven Spielberg must feel so gratified that technology finally caught up with his vision of what he wanted something to look like. A 1970's "realistic" shark pales in comparison to dinosaurs almost 20 years later. Same with the evolution of Star Wars; the pilot scenes in the first one resembled the Asteroids video game, but it was really hi-tech for the time. I like Liz Gilbert's quote from BIG MAGIC that she attributes to her mother: "Good enough now is better than perfect later." That keeps you out of the perfection paralysis as well as saying you can make improvements later--or wait for technology to catch up!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Chasing perfection is such a flawed ideal but so is getting things done just to say they're done. Trust me, when I ask my son to clean his room and he says "I'm done", I know what to expect. 😅 Giving something your best effort and working with what you have... that's a much better headspace to live in, in my opinion.

I used to hit the Ocean City, NJ beach with my friends and family back then and its true; people were actually very scared to go into the same ocean they've been in hundreds of times right up until Jaws came out. I can remember playing the Manta Ray game in Pauls Fun Place (9th st. I think?) and looking out at all the people on the beach, NOT going in the ocean! I watch Jaws every 4th of July as an annual tradition now, haha. Enjoy.

@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Right on! Love hearing that you took a break. Too many Creators think that's not an option. I also love hearing that you took a moment to rethink what you were making and how to lean into making stronger content. I've always said that videos don't need to be perfect, they just need to connect with the people you're trying to reach. That sounds so simple but it takes a lot of time & effort to dial in.
@bncsystemsshortline
@bncsystemsshortline Год назад
Yea your right. It does take time. On my brake i started doing tests with shorts and in 2 days the views shot up!!! You have to always try new stuff and trim the fat. In my opinion the new video I have in edit Is way better then the other videos on my channel. Take what works well in my videos and transplant that into the newer videos to make an almost perfect video. The problem I'm still working on is how to bring new people into my niche. My Channel is all about my hobby Model Railroading and people believe the hobby is dieing. I need to figure out how to get people into the hobby. I have a sweet little core audience I love interacting with, just need to reach out a little further then that to get kids and adults into Modeling. Thanks for taking the time to read the comments man! You have helped me out in alot of ways. Loved your DaVinci Resove shorts. Stay Blessed!@@Daniel_Batal

I've been at this youtube thing for a little bit under a year at this point (I think), and my goal was always to try and crank out a video a week. It took some doing, some learning, and readjusting, but I feel like I finally hit that groove to get it done. Thing is, during the process each week, I notice there was a lot of "that's good enough" and "that'll have to do", as well as "at least it's done". Every time I managed to get a video out in the week long time limit, I was never happy with the video. Videos I took 2 weeks on? I was much happier with. Granted, I'm not even sure the audience can tell the difference, but I was certainly much, much happier with the 2 week videos. So I've decided to go that route instead. Plus, taking the extra time has allowed me to try new tricks and what not when editing. I know I'll never make a perfect video, but I certainly want to do more than just "get it done".

I think this is well-stated Daniel. I don't think a lot of the people in the help space intend to mean that the standard should be set to studio level. I think the sentiment is more: "set a standard, hit that standard every time, try to push that standard wherever feasible."
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I think you're most likely right, Jerry. The problem for me is that I've actually sat with thousands of struggling Creators who publish videos every week and can't seem to get their channel moving. It's probably the single most common scenario I see, RU-vidrs who publish hundreds of videos and still struggle to hit 1,000 views on the majority of their recent videos. Telling those Creators, "Hey... done is better than perfect!" is just.... well, useless. Publishing week after week and not seeing gains is soul crushing for some. I'd much rather thell those creators to stop publishing so much and start focusing on what they're publishing or how to improve the way their content is built so that it connects with the target audience they're trying to reach.
@derryXDINES

@@Daniel_Batal There's an elephant in the room that I think is missing from the discussion, and I know your message here is well-meaning and that you do this for a living and know the challenges new creators face. In my 5+ years experience here where I have had a lot of ups and downs in terms of performance, things didn't really click for me until I started getting a grasp of how youtube works at a base level. If there's been anything in the way of getting to the performance that I started seeing about a year ago, quality is small part; my biggest breakthroughs came from understanding which videos to make or how to package them so that viewers are watching more and for longer, all of that helps to set the bar for quality and inform everything that goes into what is in the actual video and what I think the standard should be for when a video is "done."

Well said, sir! Something else that occurred to me while watching you is how the almost limitless options we have in software, video and audio can contribute to the analysis paralysis we've all felt at times. If I go back and listen to songs recorded before the digital age, with all of the limitations that existed in equipment and studios - there were incredible sounds that were still made and emotions drawn out through the songs. Artists and producers (often) tried to connect with songwriting and sonics, as opposed to using a million zillion effects, based on what they had available to them. Perhaps "Effective is better than Perfect" is what I'd go with :)

Good point about "effective" 👍. I'm on the third remake of my current video. The first two versions just weren't working for me. I didn't finish the editing on either because if there's not enough mojo in the material to get me through editing there's not enough mojo to get a viewer through watching! Also this is episode 2 of a series so putting out a naff second episode would kill the rest of the series regardless of how good the subsequent episodes turn out.

The idea was stop trying to get a bullseye and just shoot and go for it. I think the old adage films escape....they are never released makes a lot of sense. Because directors are never truly happy with a film and if they had their way they would tinker and tinker, and never release the film. FYI ...u have made a perfect video.....Not a Rockstar. I found the biggest tool to my advantage is improving my learning skills, which that might make a great video for you. I particularly take notes on obsidian when watching youtube videos like this, and I create my own "call to actions" that apply to my business & Entrepreneural framework. Even though I already knew this as somewhat a general knowledge scope I put larger time investment into videos, so instead of 5 minute pump and dump I will try 20 minutes creation process instead and fewer productions.

I love your connection to Jaws - same here. Our theater burned down and first double feature to re-open was 'Grease' and 'Jaws'. Excellent point about 'Jaws' working around the issues to become perfect / well done - Even the music, being just a few select notes - brought an air of suspense from the start, goes with my view when something is not meshing or taking too much space then 'Less is More' will drop into the mix. Not all the time - but as needed. Oh my director in IT - quotes that all the time, reminds me of the 'Princess Bride' "I don't think that means what you think it does" :-D. Thanks once again for insightful video.

Ha! Great quote! I couldn’t agree more. Of course we’re all trying to finish it complete our videos. But instead of “Done”, I think we should aim for “Well done” and lose the word perfect altogether

VERY well done, my man! My learning lesson, similar to this, is "perfect is the enemy of good". I found out the hard way when I missed a HUGE trend recently in my niche (you know which video I'm talking about). I had a "good" video done in 2 days. 6 days later I think it was "perfect"...and by then I had missed the boat completely. And also missed probably 100k+ views, too. I learned that sometimes "good" is actually "great" to my viewers. Perfect doesn't exist, and I will never try to make a video perfect; my goal is to make good quality content...and it turns out, my viewers think that some of my "good" stuff is...wait for it - "perfect" to THEM. Rock on, brother, great video! 💪

To be fair, I think it was more a matter of time and money than it was technology catching up. Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey was made using mid-1960s technology, and the results were pretty amazing. Not that tech isn't important, but it's not necessarily what makes a good piece of film. There are many examples of movies that use the latest in special effects tech, but aren't all that good.

I'm pretty okay with math in my head.....yet I botched some math in a video which I thought was important to me. I let it go, published it because life in RU-vid is perfect, yet life outside of RU-vid is riddled with mistakes. RU-vid has even stated that my whole channel is a mistake. You have posted another great video!

I watched some shorts, then left to eat a salad and came back to watch this long form video because I liked your shorts so much. 😎 Then I assessed my perfectionism is at an ultimate high right now, and needed this reminder to continue to do my best… even if it means focusing on getting things done faster so I have more time to apply all my skills.

Gosh, Daniel thanks for the awesome video, I was already cunfused cz a lot of people say Quality over Quantity, but now for the past few months I've seen so many people say go fast it doesn't have to be good it just has to be fast, so you can first build the community and then evolve your content... I'm currently in the phase that I edit the video to be pretty good, but not that "perfect" that I have to waste 30days on one video edit! But I'd love to speed up my editing as it takes around 8h so far for my kind of simple edits.. 🙂❤️

Well said. Articulate and worthy of thought. Your videos are just right. Targeted with a minimum of hype. There are examples of both. Microsoft "just get it out the door." Woody Allen obsessed over every detail. So did David Lean. But Clint Eastwood -- one take Clint. The perfect movie -- Casablanca.

Unfortunately I'm one of many who tends to get overwhelmed and stuck in my head with regards to content in fact I recently deleted a peice of content from my other social media account and also RU-vid because I felt like I made a semi important mistake, many artist struggle with perfectionisim in fact I would have over 100 videos uploaded to my channel if I had not deleted and or privated multiple videos I didn't feel satisfied with them, the amount of videos don't matter if no one finds them useful or entertaining. I think becoming a good content creator and especially an "artist"who isn't a clone of dozens of other artists on the platform is quite difficult and comes with more pressure then I could have anticipated thus I'm still figuring things out and my content reflects that. It's been a stressful rollercoaster ride so far but I'm trying my best to hang in there as I sometimes I still feel unsure as to whether I should continue in the artist niche but I've already spent so much time chipping away that I can't imagine doing much else, sigh! thanks for sharing you're insight ☮️❤️

I don’t publish about a third of the videos I make. For me it’s not about trying to be perfect, some videos just don’t work like I thought they would. Lots of musicians write songs they never release for similar reasons. My goal is always to make videos that are effective. Sometimes I miss the mark

It's complete BS. Since I began striving for close-to-perfect videos, I've been producing much better videos. And if I'm thinking correctly, great content is what grows a RU-vid channel. Chips with Salsa! I'm with you.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal 8 месяцев назад
Spoiler alert: You're videos aren't even close to perfect. Neither are mine. Perfect doesn't exist. What does exist is the ability to do the very best you can at that point in time with the skill set you have. Beer with those chips and salsa!

This phrase was one of the best advice for me. Because when I started I compared myself to big guys. I had to start and then just make every next video better in some aspect and move from there. Otherwise I wouldn't even start, because the lighting was wrong, the sound and words and everything else.

Hey Daniel, so I just spend a couple of hours watching your entire shorts tutorial after your kickass music video, as I want to start a new gaming channel, and your channel convinced me on Davinci. One thing I noticed, you have an entire shorts series on editing tips, but no video on actually making a high class short, or atleast I failed to find one, the best I could find was the focusing on an object in the shorts format as the main subject. A small request, do help out extremely beginner editors like me with a basic tutorial on how to make a riveting and catchy shorts with Davinci, so I can learn and start the same. Thanks.

Hey Daniel! I SLIGHTLY disagree but UNDERSTAND your points very well. I disagree with the premise of "done better than perfect" equates to never improving with each video. As a musician, you're ALWAYS going to hear how something can be touched up a bit more, how a mix can be improved, etc. And every audio engineer reading can tell you, you hear things more and more as days progress. Now I agree there isn't a thing as a perfect video (which I believe validates the statement). But many people operate as if such a video exist. And instead of getting a "low score" on a video, they don't record period (which is the true focus of it being done). You can always improve something that isn't good. You can't improve something that doesn't exist. Love what you do regardless, and I hope you have the best day!

You put out the best Video you can and learn from it. I think my newer videos are better than my older ones, however I always did my best with what I have and do better. To me it's about being a lifelong learner. I did try to put out as much content at one point as possible and they did terrible, because the quality went down. I have taken a step back and will be making videos again real soon. I don't want to just throw something out, because my own deadline is more important than a better video. So I'm not striving for perfection, just to put out better videos and always try to improve.

Yeah, our middle son wanted very much to start a RU-vid channel, he never got his first video made because he wanted it to be on par or better than all the videos he watches, instead of getting started, and working up to that level with practice instead of never releasing a video... I wish he would make content, he has such passion and an attention to detail in the things he likes, he could really stand out... but we'll probably never know... I tried to encourage him... He just didn't want to hear my advice, me telling him to start off with shorter content, he wanted to make these elaborate hour long videos that are polished, pro looking.

So sad , that storyblocks want to get the money anually . To pay 360 Dollars in ONE piece at the beginning is impossible for me... 😞 And the 15 Dollar variant is no option too . Just 5 Downloads per month ? No way....

There are always free asset houses like Pixabay or Pexels. Obviously, you don't get the volume, quality or unlimited amount of assets but that's why Storyblocks costs money. They provide a massive amount of pro level content. I personally think it's worth the dollar per day it costs. I spend more than that on my morning coffee.
