I'm one of those people who hadn't heard of you prior to the Filmora debacle. I'm a tiny (microscopic) content creator trying to find ways to make my videos get "out there" more, and it's a struggle, but I've borrowed some of your suggestions and they've definitely helped. I'm not a full-time creator so I don't post as often as others and don't have the time to study the metrics in the same detail, but I appreciate the help I can leverage. Thanks for your content.

It was fun participating in this! I've been cautious about trying to hack the retention graph for the sake of doing it based on the advice because I've noticed that, at scale, the higher performing videos on my channel have graphs that look a little more like your original picture (with humps in the middle since they're search based tutorials). At my age, I'm not a huge fan of the "boom.boom.boom" retention-optimized videos for a long period. I think there are plenty of people like me who are the same, and I'm building my community there with my long form vids. Thanks for posting the original exercise to twitter and breaking this down further here, Daniel!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Right on, Jerry. Thanks for helping out! One thing we tend to see is that with more traffic, those humps often tend to flatten out a bit. But, I definitely pay attention to them whenever I see them. Knowing how viewers in your niche tend to watch content is a huge advantage.

I’ve had a couple of videos go to “scale” (but a smaller scale) and CTR and watch time do fade with a wider net. Making my videos best for my core audience helps prove the video as worthy of a bigger audience. So it’s hard when those metrics look good but the “browse” numbers flatline.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I have plenty of videos with “great” metrics that flatline out at 25,000 views or so. Those videos just don’t have the potential reach based on the topic that some of my others do. We all seem to get a little better at understanding which topics might connect better once we’ve made hundreds of videos.

You have no idea how helpful this video has been for me. All my top videos have the “drop” - which I used to think of as the “drop of death” - now, it will be the “drop of distribution”. It just means it’s being served more - and that’s a good thing.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
As long as that drop doesn't happen right when Impressions are low, I worry much less about that video. Now, if I see a drop like that and my video only has a handful of Impressions and views (from what SHOULD be the people who really enjoy my content), then I know I missed the mark with my core audience. That's when I look at everything and see where I could have done better. Typically, I start with Topic, Title, & Thumbnail and work my into structure and execution

My .02¢: Even if 100% of people in your niche are fully into your video, once it gets out in front of a more general audience than before, your stats will go down. For example, I make videos rebuilding 90's cars with retro video game sound effects and a dash of Satan. If my videos get out in front of regular viewers outside of my very specific niche, those stats are SUPPOSED to be lower. That's how I know I'm making content that is actually unique. I'm not trying to appeal to everybody. I'm just trying to make something for my people.

Yaaaaaaaaaasss! I totally got invested in your channel after the Filmora drama for exactly the reason you gave here. I haven't delved into the metrics as much as Mark does. My role is to produce. I let him study the analytics. I tend to worry more about CTR, # of views, and where the video actually sits in our current top 10 list. Changing a title or a thumbnail of a video that underperformed really has yet to make any difference. I'm ok with that. We just keep on swimming and creating. Some of our older videos get little bumps when a newer video is performing well. This topic, like so many that you have put out, is spot on. Your thought process makes logical sense. Some of the things we have done since we started tuning is 1) cut our intro down to 10 seconds. It was hard to let it go completely! LOL It really was too long. Baby steps. The smaller intro has been an improvement. 2) Stop being askholes! LMAO! So blunt, but so real! The logic that if someone likes you enough, they will subscribe anyway, so why ask hit the nail on the head! Honestly, I tend to skip over that stuff when I watch another creator, so why were we doing it too? I'm writing too much here - but you get the point. Thank you for creating honest and helpful content to help us little guys out here!! 🥰 ~Gina

I discovered your channel with your stand against Filmora. I am working on a animation series, that are funny and cute about a fat cat. I released a couple of videos pretty much only some of my friends watched. There was few others. I am not at PIXAR level by no means but their not bad either. Anyways I saw something about that when launching a new channel you should launch with at least five video's so that your channel has more value and keeps your audience on your channel longer. So I decided to work out more animations, possibly do a couple of tutorials of how I did some things, for those who are into animation or curious. I am not talented in speaking as you are, I am a artist, but I know my animations can do better than a hundred + views. I think one thing I did wrong is I used a old channel that was for my music and just recreated it for my animation series. Before I thought I need my friends on social media to spread my videos, but most are not that dedicated and I am not going to make them do anything they don't want to do. Plus social media frustrates me.. I have seen many animation shorts get into the millions of views. I wonder how they do it. Maybe mine is not quite at that level yet but I think they will be soon the more I work on them. I have been told by a number of people I know that they are either very cute, hilarious or very good. Only person who doesn't understand said it doesn't look like Disney. Any suggestions that can help? Thank you!
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
I feel that. I don't know if this will help or not but I try to think more about the needs & interests of the viewer whenever approaching any video content. The very first questions I tend to ask myself are, "Who are the people I'm trying to reach with this and why would they want to watch this video when it's surrounded by all sorts of other videos that are targeting their other interests?" If I can answer those two questions... I usually have a jumping off point of where to being my creative process.
@G-and-J-Chapel-Artworks
@G-and-J-Chapel-Artworks Год назад
I figure that I just haven't reached my target audience yet. I do plan to make my videos shorter by breaking them into separate episodes at the "step" stage. I figure maybe an artistic painting video gets too long when posted in one shot (episode). Maybe breaking the video at each step, (background, foreground, details etc.) will not only give me more individual content and help the overall retention. This may help reach that target audience. At which point I can easily transition back to single episode shots if my audience asks for that format.

Hey Daniel, well I was one of the 95% ers at first then stopped and had a look at my own stats before watching the rest of the video. That changed my mind. My stats for a small (but growing) channel revealed how much my channel is evolving. I used to tinker with every video title and thumbnail almost as soon as it was released. But now I rarely do unless I see an obvious mistake. Your video illustrates exactly the same changes my own videos have undergone over time. Its clear that RU-vid experiments with who see's your videos and that impacts the impressions, CTR, & AVD. IMO making changes just upsets the algo and I think may do more harm than good in the long run. My best performing video in the last 90 days are nearly all over 6 months old. Some have taken over a year to break out. My tutorials are evergreen long form in the main but a few shorts help add a little spice to the viewership. Great video as always. Ok, looking at that I'd be pretty happy with the results of that graph. - It probably got new viewers who watched the first 30 seconds and decided this wasn't the personality for them or the content they wanted. - The dedicated viewers enjoyed the video the entire way through. - Perhaps some of the newer viewers watched it the entire way through. - (Niche to my own content) They watched the high octane intro and decided that was enough and I'm cool with that. So, what would I do? Make another video like that and hopefully more people were entertained and stuck to this kind of content.

Nobody needs deep analytics to tell them when their video is taking off. I honestly probably need to look at my data more. 😅 I worry so much tuning up my quality (tech-wise and editing-wise), my data analyzing often gets put on the back burner of "maybe I'll look at it sometime later". I need to start honing in on the business/marketing/data side of YouTubing, just have to get out of that mindset that it's "something extra" to do.

Very true. I think there is no 'One-size-fits-all' for pacing. I'm constantly adjusting mine to see how the greater target audience reacts. For some things, faster was better but overall, it seems a more of a mid tempo pace seems to work best. Which is a little slower than my normal cadence. I'm from New England. I get excited and start talking too fast. And wave my hands around a lot. And suddenly my accent comes out. (Really annoying)

Now here we are talking in the comments section. That's all 'Viewer Behavior' and this thing we're doing right now? This will impact what RU-vid does with my other content. You'll probably see more of it pop up along the way because RU-vid sees that you've engaged with them. (Thank you for that, by the way ❤️)

This was great, thank you! I often struggle after I release a video with the immediate gratification need I seem to have. My most recent video has one of the more poor CTR's I've had in a long time (just over 3%, and impressions are still fairly high for my channel) and I keep changing thumbnails, titles, etc in the first day or two. Am I jumping the gun here, and should I have waited a little longer before making any changes??

Again the analytics stuff is a bit confusing for me on occasion as there's so much to understand and learn with regards to RU-vid it can be a bit overwhelming and mind boggling, as for video performance shorts use to perform the best for me but lately not anymore which is a bit of a discouraging head scratcher, some videos flat line then days later start to spike in views YT unpredictable hence I'm not one to immediately start changing the video when it's performing poorly I prefer to wait a bit and see, in case it's a temporary slump if not I might play around to see if I can revive the video but this isn't something I do often I typically upload and move on, if a video performs completely awful I might private the video etc, thanks for tips and encouragement ❤

Hey Daniel, yeah I needed this video for a long time. You actually critiqued my channel about a month ago and gave me some advice live on how to upgrade my homepage. Since I do roller coaster videos I always get a big drop in the beginning either because people that click on it think it's gonna be a real-life roller coaster versus what is actually a digital creation of what I make, or they find the beginning of the ride slow and fast forward to the fast parts. After watching this video I'm kind of frustrated at myself because I did edit out the beginnings of some of my popular rides to see if that would make a difference and it showed me no difference at all. So from now on I'm gonna leave all my videos alone because of this awesome video that you just presented. Thank you. -Tommy

I love live streaming. It's a really positive way to increase engagement with your community. My two cents for reach is don't think about reaching beyond your niche, think about how to approach topics within your niche to have the broadest possible reach. I personally find that channels (especially resource or utility channels) can get stuck in "Tutorial mode" where the majority of content is based on Search traffic and showing people how to do something. Adding story to your channel can change things up a lot. Doesn't mean you can't talk about what you want to talk about or show people how to do things, it just means you can shift the viewer's perspective from being interested in the thing to being more interested in you.

This is Gold Daniel. I was constantly refreshing my feed waiting for you to upload this. Quick question. Here is an example for this question. 1 video uploaded and in the first 24 hours it gains 400 impressions. From that, here is the views break down : 15 are from subs, 5 from search, 5 from suggested. Most subs watched a little over half way of the video and some gave me likes. Search and suggested both didn't hold viewers for more than about 5 seconds. Meaning that youtube sees 25 views but none made it to the end, none of them commented, and just a few liked it. This would indicate poor packaging wouldn't it? This is an on-going trend that happens in all my long form content. Some times impressions go as high as 4k impressions but views stay around less than 30 views. How can I assist that conversation to happen a little bit more? I ask that because after the first couple thousand impressions and 25 to 30 views youtube slows down to just 1 to 5 impressions a day and moves on. Sorry for the long comment. Was just curious in your opinion and any guidance you may have. Appreciate your excellent content my friend! I'm growing every day because of your help!

@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
Unfortunately thats an impossible question to answer because it's predicated by so many other data points. Niche, topic, timing, competition, relevance, trends... What I would say is that I've learned what a good CTR is for me when I first launch a video (for me that's anything over 13.5% in the first hour of publication if it drives 10,000 -20,000 Impressions in that hour). I would focus on learning your own internal performance metrics so that you can gauge against your own previous video performance and learn to repeat successes. If you can establish strong velocity with your core audience, you'll have a good chance of that video being surfaced further.

We just mimic or repeat just what we heard as what makes videos good. Timing is a good thing to take into consideration, like example if I release a video at 8am it's going to drop down way low vs if I release it noon my time. I also love that you bring up that you break down the views more and what happens if people see something but may not watch all of it or intrested. The other part you bring up that I like is that bout if everything was done pefect that you are still thrown in a barrel with others and you can't always be on top even with perfection moment.

I've started to not pay attention to RU-vid telling me the first 30 secs is below typical.😅 As a tiny channel I know that 99.9% of people would have no reasons to watch me, so I tend to focus on the rest of the graph. Q: How does AVD work when viewers watch at, let's say 1.5 times the speed. Many ppl watch non talking videos at higher speed. Also does adding an extra 10 secs at the end ,for end card purpose, stuff up ur stats ? ( either ur viewers have clicked to your next vid or moved on ) creating a big drop right before ur video is technically over.
@Daniel_Batal
@Daniel_Batal Год назад
The basic math is if someone watches your entire video at 2x, you get half the AVD (average view duration) and half the watchtime. Though, you can still have 100% APV (average percentage viewed) because they've watched the entire video.

I’ve been actively posting videos on my channel for two years now. I’m proud of the fact I’ve grown to over 500 subs. I feel like I’ve gotten better at title and thumb creation, but the results just aren’t there. Earlier today I posted a short and went to get ready for work. When I came back later it had zero views. Zero. I’m sure there are still plenty of things I could be doing better. But zero views on a channel with 500+ subscribers doesn’t make sense to me.
