We need this whole team to pick it the fuck up. This series is definitely winnable and who knows maybe the next few seasons we're not healthy, maybe couple key pieces don't sign again. We need to make the most of the opportunity we have right now!! Even that last play jump infront of the fucking puck and stop giving Drai 10 years to make a play, press!!
I think it's mental with Pettersson more than physical. When he slumps, his lows go pretty low. Having said that, his track record over the long haul has been too good for me to think he won't recover from this. Still, sooner is better than later.
MISSING PERSON Date of birth: November 12th, 1998 Age: 25 years old Sex: Male Race: Caucasian Eyes: Blue Hair: Blonde Height: 188 cm Weight: 145 pounds Wearing: Canucks jersey Identifying characteristics: The public is asking if you have any information on the whereabouts of Elias. He has been missing for the past seven weeks. He is a significant part of the Canucks playoff success and needs to be found ASAP.
Young player learning a lot , he’s 25 I don’t think we are talking buy out at this point or we shouldn’t be anyways . I think Elias Petterson is a wonderful hockey player and still has room to grow physically. Sedins weren’t affective until they were 25 -26 . I’m not ready to shut the door on an 100 point 25 year old . Give me a break . It’s been frustrating though to say the least .
Bubble Pettersson and this current iteration is night and day. You watch the previous playoffs and he's going out of his way to throw hits, doing those reverse hits when someone is checking him, driving hard to the net, etc.
He has shown the last time, that he can play well and produce in the playoff. Then, the first time 4 years ago now, he had 18 points in 17 games). The problem, lack of confidence now, started before the playoff, after the all star game. But they also moved player around like crazy (but not Miller and Boeser), and Pettersson didn't work well with Lindholm and then he never got any good/best players to play with. One way would be to try with Lindholm again, but Lindholm as the center, and bring back the old Joshua (life) line as third line again. Then they could get 3 really good lines, if it works out well.
I'm surprised Tocchet scratched Hoglander and not Mikheyev who's been invisible and hasn't produced for months. I say give Hoglander the spot and in the offseason we NEED to bring in Toffoli who's a consistent goalscorer. For now, scratch Mik and bring in Podkolson - can't do any worse than what's there now, surely?
I saw information once (but don't remember where now), that said Hoglander got injured. (it was not just some random comments to some video, but in the commentary / analysis / news video)
It's a suffocating market and anyone that thinks the money should be enough of a motivator to work has their head in the clouds. He's gaining the experience he needs and tonight's lining up to be a huge moment for him and the team. This is the night we need him most and it's been laid in his lap, media-wise. I'm a homer believer, but I'm swaying to the side of him being a huge factor instead of the slouch the pundits are painting him as. This guy is a mega talent that will prove his doubters wrong.
Agree problem also come from his wingers. Mikheyev is in big slump, his last goal was 60+ games ago. Petey needs better winger that can make the line produce points. Take out Mikheyev. Put back Podkolzin and Hoglander
Put the original 3rd line back with Blueger as the center and put Lindy on wing with Petey. Honestly if we lose next game I would say fuck it and throw Lekki on the wing at that point too.
@@David-we3pyexactly i was just going to write the same comment (but you already did)! Then they can get 3 good lines working. However, it was Lindholm that didn't work well playing wing with pettersson as center the last time they tried (when they tried to find a, spot and get Lindholm going), but they should now try Lindholm as center and pettersson on his preferred wing and see if it works. Then they would have 3 good lines, with the Miller line and the 'life' line (Blueger line), the latter which started the season so good.
@@David-we3pyand yes, if they try with Pettersson - Lindholm - Lekki... And the Miller and blueger lines. And in the 4th line, Michiev (spelling?) and Höglander and one more, the most suitable player available, and see what they can do. Then they could actually get 4 good lines working, for their different tasks! And remember how much Höglander scored while playing in the 4th line! He, was playing hard but skilled player at the same time.
Rick, I'm with you, this mob mentality of wanting to already chase him out of town with pitchforks and torches, is at least premature if not over the top. It's clear this kid needs help and its up to the coaching staff to get him going too
The biggest issue with Ricks argument about changing Petey's linemates is the fact that there's really no one right now who they can put on with him who isn't already apart of a line that generates or shuts down McDavid. Miller/Suter/Boeser and Garland/Lindholm/Joshua are 2 lines who generate consistently and play key roles in each game. They are the 1st and 2nd line. Beneath them you have only have Petterson and a bunch of interchangable 4th liners. You can't take from the Miller and Lindholm lines because that weakens the team and puts them with Petterson who in general looks like he's struggling.
I don't think Petey is injured. He doesn't want to get dirty and go full out. He would rather play "Hot Potato" and fire 1 or 2 shots a game at most. He isn't making any moves on the PP, so I'm not biting on his line mates argument. THe PP is all Hughes, JT and Brock...Petey is close to invisible. Watch McDavid.or Leon..always moving and trying to open up seams...Petey is standing still on the PP 95% of the time. It's between the ears folks...
I don't think pettersson is injured etc, he just doesn't have intensity in the playoffs also maybe feeling the pressure ever since he signed the big contract. I do agree to some extent maybe give him better wingers , but a player of his caliber and contact should be able to create something on his own too , which he hasn't show in the playoffs thus far
he needs to alter the style of play.. its no different than marner.. etc.. playoffs is a different beast.. smaller windows, tight checking, more physical... don't think you can easily just dangle the puck without some guy bodying you..
He scored 18 points in 17 playoff games 4 years ago, so he is capable of producing in playoff games too. His slump now started long before the playoff (after the all star break / Lindholm trade). It is not about lacking capacity for playoff game specifically. He has lost his confidence (its in his head) and still not being able to get it back. But shuffling his linemates like crazy, which they did after the Lindholm trade also didn't help either, neither does the lack of not getting to play with any top-6 players on the wings (and if you look at Michiev (spelling?) and Höglander, they are all, also, in a slump, not just Pettersson. So for a long time in the playoff they made a line with 3 slumping/struggling players. Look at Michiev numbers for example, for a long time. And Hoglander too, but during the playoff.
I just watched the interview and he needs some mental help 😭 hes dejected and depressed. His personality itself is night and day. Hopefully someone can give him some heart to heart.
We need Pettersson to be at his best in order to make it to the finals for a possible 30 years in the making rematch against the New York Rangers and than ITS ON! I know Canucks have what it takes to get to the big stage this year, how about you RANGERS, got what it takes to meet us there!? Now lets Crush these Oily McGoofs and take care of business the rest of the way!!!
Taylors right, as usual, 😊. i do like Daliwal sticking up for EP40, but at that price, I'm not willing to wait 5 years or so for him to muscle up and get good
Honestly the kid looks scared out there. He gets knocked off his feet non stop and doesn't battle or back check. Not sure he's built for the intensity and physicality of the playoffs. Marner 2.0.
We've literally seen him with that intensity multiple times in his career from Sweden to NA. There is something going on with him in his head. There have big stretches multiple times of the last 3 or so seasons where he looks like an absolute zombie out there.. and that's not the type of player he usually is.On the ice Tocchet is right though.. he doesn't move his feet. He is never skating hard and attacking the net or separating himself from checks .. he always glides with the puck and gets caught.. or he stops on the boards and literally waits for contact. He used to attack with the puck and now he never does and its why he never looks dangerous... like never. Hell even without points I actually notice Mikheyev on his line more than I notice him.
@@Eleutherios1 Agreed. Anyone has followed Petey for a while knows he -can- completely take over a game. Something is definitely wrong either mental of physical because the talent is there. He used to look so fearless carrying the puck, he would take on guys all the time, he's not doing that anymore.
as a team we are way ahead of "schedule" this year, division winners and in the 2nd round. many deficiencies required upgrades and that is what got us here. there will continue to be positional upgrades and the EP line needs high level skill. so it seems EP is carrying the burden of "we're not there yet" but that doesn't explain the solemn press conference today. it was about as energetically opposite of NHL playoff energy that a NHL player in the playoffs could possible muster. if this funk goes back to the forced contract signing well that is a whole other barrel of destructive monkeys that i don't even want to think about. he is here to win, this i believe, so let's do it! wake TFU and play your hard, strong game tonight!
Taylor is right, if he's not injured, then what? That's his best, lol. Get rid of him. He's not worth the coin. And i don't want to wait 5 years for him to get good.
If I was Don Taylor I wouldn’t be able to stand working with this guy. This show works better with a third host/guest. Their dynamic as a pair is too tense and I don’t blame Donnie one bit.
@@rodzor yes, remove the yelling and that alone would make him a little more tolerable. I work with three American guys and two of them do that. It’s off putting
If Petey is not injured, then the only viable reason for his poor play is his lack of strength. I suspect that he is not getting enough sleep and rest in between games. He seems to be a perfectionist who gets too affected by every bad thing that happens to him. This also explains why he loves videogames, a release valve, a distraction from all negativity.
Just out of curiosity when does his no movement clause kick in? How would the Canucks have looked in these playoffs if they made that trade with Carolina? Love EP40, and I think he needs better wingers, but he just doesn’t look happy … he looks lost and defeated most nights.
He’s not injured. He’s not strong enough that’s it. He still can erase all the bad play with a good couple games here. I believe he will step up when it matters
Peterson, Demko, Hronek and 2 1sts to Chicago for Bedard. .. who says no LOL.. Resign Lindholm, Dak, Zad, Myers (for less) bring in Tanev, Run with Silovs Trade Lek, Willander and something else to Sens for Brady. JT Brock Brady window now.. then another Bedard window in 5-6 years with appropriate moves. I'm saying that and Petey has been my favorite player.
Hes not hurt, there is no reason we keep a player who's not producing in the lineup when he's hurt. Draisaitl is playing hurt and the guy is a monster out there. Hes just not playing well. He needs to re set next season and get his head straight.
0:40 - Since when do teams announce that players are hurt? 🙂That´s just an invite to all the guys on the other team to try to hit the injured/hurting player even more. 3:00 - Petey is 50% on faceoffs in the post season. That´s okay. Yes, he was 45.5% in this game, but Miller was actually worse with 35.7%. But you´re right that Petey has to play much better.
The Canucks are the better team and should win this series in a commanding way. They are tied with the Oilers with, Petterson playing like a schoolboy, with half of the defence unable to make a pass other than icing the puck, with substitute goalies, with the 3rd line as their best line, and not really looking settled since the Allstar break.
Pettersson looks defeated. Hangs his head when he gets hit hard and is often very slow to get up. Like he's looking for sympathy from someone. Hope he gets out of his funk!
He's been off since he signed the big contract. Isn't that when he stopped playing well? Maybe that's when it stopped being fun for him. Too much responsibility and pressure to produce. Too much money to be able to have fun. Maybe what he needs is a good psychologist who can help him get beyond that.
Everyone is so quick to jump on a guy when he is going through a slump. Just support your players. Especially when they’ve done much better than expected this season.
It's not "jumping on him" it's criticizing his play which hasn't been good enough. When you play well, you get praise. When you underperform, you get criticism. If he didn't want this kind of pressure than he shouldn't have signed for 11.6 per year.
no show us you deserve our support and Ive seen nothing sustained from him or Mikheyev that warrants it. We gave up on Kuzmenko way too fast and yes I know we got Lindholm for him but we also way overpaid on that trade ( and every trade this year)
quick? it's been 4 months now. This is the playoffs, so he deserves at least some backlash for his play. Accountability as Tocchet said which even HE called Petey out in public so there's no defending it. "Especially when they’ve done much better than expected this season".. HE'S letting the team down in the playoffs while players like Boeser, Lindholm, garland, Zadorov, Miller and Silovs has stepped up. You can criticize fans for giving him shit but the reality is he's not good enough and people are going to call him out on it so you can keep trying to make excuses and defend him and play the "good guy"
Literally every single one of these replies is a joke. You guys simply cannot call yourselves real fans. He is clearly battling something right now. Whether it’s an injury or an illness he is not at 100%. You guys are probably the same clowns that wanted Lindholm gone in the regular season and now are on your knees ready to blow him.
@@johnnybaxter1953 you say “when you underperform, you get criticism”- name me one analyst who thought the Canucks would make the playoffs/win the division, let alone get to the 2nd round?!?! What they are doing right now is the definition of over performing so anything they give us as fans this season we should be grateful for. This is a young team. This is a first proper go at the cup. We will have more, and regardless of whether or not we win this season they will be hungry for more. Also very glad the fans chanted Petey’s name, showed him love and he goes on to have his best performance of the playoffs.
What made Petey great? A fearless, offensively driven player who made opposing teams nervous with the puck on his stick. His slapshot was wickedly hard and when he got in a position to score, he didn’t blink. Now, we have a double clutching, scared to shoot, scared to engage, lackadaisical skater who hasn’t an ounce of creativity and is 0 threat offensively. He’s easily knocked off the puck because he’s not moving and he refuses to shoot when part of our PP is designed for him to rip it. SMH
He has lost his confidence. That is all that is going on. (and lack of any top-6 wingers also does not help, and playing with equally struggling wingers too)
Several points: 1) why tf does Petey spend all offseason travelling, going to Dubai, on yachts? Get in the fucking gym. 2) why do we stand and give their stars all day to make a play?? We need to be pressuring them at least a little bit, especially on the power play. 3) I hate the way the NHL is reffed. Regular season and playoff hockey are nothing alike. Other sports don’t do this. At least not nearly to this degree. The cross checks people are getting away with are absurd.
announce he’s injured in the playoffs? is dumiwal still drunk from last night? why not sow a target on the injured area of his uniform so the opposing team can target it more easily? did anyone notice draisaitl get crosschecked in the back when they “announced “ he was having lower back issues? lol poor rick
Vancouver is not a Stanley Cup contender in 2024. You can't expect to carry the team two more rounds, never mind getting through this one against Edmonton.
Ray Ferraro said it best about Petterson: "He's not the biggest, he's not the strongest". That's become very obvious to me over this season and the playoffs. He's looking like a rookie instead of a superstar franchise player. But his Number One Flaw as a hockey player for me: he is just an average skater, not a power skater like Hughes, Garland, Miller, McDavid, etc. If he was a truly fast, dynamic power skater his game would be much better. He has great skills and hockey smarts, but unfortunately he may turn out to be highly over-rated in the long run.
One day he will regret so much that at least he didn’t bust his ass on every shift, you never know this may be the last time he’s at this stage in the playoffs
I think Pettersson's confidence is shot, and this year's playoffs may be a lost cause for the guy. If he is injured, you cannot disclose to the public that he is hurt, or he would be targeted and risk further, more substantial injuries. I had questions about the Canucks going all in as I feared that it would take some seasoning for guys like Hughes, Pettersson, and even Boeser, some playoff experience to really know how to win in the post-season. Obviously, everyone player responds to playoff pressure differently, with Boeser clearly thriving while Pettersson just folding... but the winning window for this team was not this season when the season started, and maybe we should not expect it to be even though they had a great regular season. Pettersson may need some sports psychologist, like the person who worked with Boeser, to turn things around long-term.
Boeser-Miller-Suter Hoglander-Lindholm-EP40 Garland-Blueger-Joshua (Then whatever for 4th line). If Canucks lose Game 5 using these lines then we must go nuclear with reuniting Lotto Line.
Would Rick ever bench Petey for his "passenger" type play ? Sure, he has lousy linemates but even on the powerplay he seems to lack self confidence and passes when he should shoot. His reaction in the first game when he looked to the stars when he missed an open net , said it all. Can someone from say Abbotsford fill it because Peter seems to have checked out.
Toch doesn’t want poor shots on net., where as most other coaches want high volume of shots “throw it on net, good things happen” mentality.. because of this, I wonder if Petey is just second guessing himself. Not able to adapt easily to toch’s style etc.
Petter$$on better not complain about who his linemates are right now. Wait until next year when his contract extension kicks in and the Canucks are forced to fill their roster with a bunch of ELC's to fit the cap.
I've been noticing that since the all-star break. I mentioned it to a few people. Even on the powerplay in the last weeks of the season, there were obvious passes not going his way. Makes me wonder if he's done something to piss off his teammates, or are they sheltering his possible injury?
The canucks get in the playoffs one time and think theyre just going to be gifted a cup. Who do they think they're playing? Thet're playing so tight to the cuff, low event hockey that Its kept them alive in these playoffs. But its hard for your stars to thrive under that strategy. If they open up, and let their forwards go, it could cause havoc on their game, and they know it. Ive never seen a team play so hyper conscious on keeping it low event. Insecure if you ask me.
Like petterson who has 1 goal in 10 playoff games and the team is still finding ways to win its frustrating to think what could be if he at least had a goal eveey 2 games
Canucks are a three line team. Not going anywhere in the playoffs with Petey’s line as it now stands. Rotating 4 competitive lines puts you in Stars territory.
We've all seen Petey when hes having some bad luck, the effort is there, but the bounces just arent going his way. This is completely different, he's drifting out there, no effort, no hustle. Its like he signed the contract, made this entire stink about wanting to play for a winning team, the Canucks gave him 100% of what he asked for and now hes just sandbagging the shit out of the playoffs. If I'm the Canucks at this point I look at a healthy scratch, moving him throughout the line-up clearly isnt working, and frankly he's useless if he's only as good as his linemates at this point. If im the Canucks I'm atleast kicking tires in the off season to move him before the new contract starts and he cripples this team for the next 8 years.
They have tried to re-unite the lotto line multiple times and it fails because PETEYs effort is crap. No fore check is possible. Every line requires a hard nose fore checker if you want to win. You can't put Garland on his line because you'll have two tiny guys on the line with no beef. Garland needs Joshua and Joshua needs Garland. Slot in anyone else on that line and it'll do fine. If Petey needs better wingers, then earn it... if he played like he was getting 11 mil, then he'd be on the top line again.
This team will be one and done. Couldn't believe this org signed a player for 11.5 they just watched what the org did in the past.Wow handcuffed again.
We need to stop asking if he's injured. He's not injured unless you think a lack of mental fortitude is an injury. EP40 just folded under the contract pressure, which he had a huge part in creating and perpetuating btw, so let's ask ourselves will this happen again ? This is 2 times now immediately after signing significant contracts, that he's just looked bad. 2 years back now at the start of that season he signed his 7 million dollar per year deal and that had us asking ourselves if he'd ever score again, do people recall that ? So IF Pettersson snaps out of this funk who's to say he won't go through this again and again ect. ? The chance to trade him while he has some mystique and value around the league is now. Get him out of here ! At least just to free up the 11.6 million...BUT I'm certain we can get at least 1 effective and great player back for him. ( I'm still looking at New Jersey and One of Quinn's Bros. ) But it's gotta done be in this off season.
Yes that's true that is when that other slump happened. If they kind of crash and burn out of this playoffs and petey is still a no show (he is my favorite player so this pains me to say) I think they should contemplate moving Petey, Demko and Hronek. That should be an absolute haul. Add to those three 2 1st rounders and I know it seems impossible but I would try for Bedard. Get Bedards camp to put out whispers that he wants to play at home and he will likely not re-sign in Chicago. That's a ready made team for Chicago and still a ton of picks for them. Run with Silovs in net, re-sign lindy, Dak and Zad, myers and tanev. And/or try to put a package together for tkachuk from ott.
Sorry Rick, I'm on team Donnie. We might have made the biggest mistake in Canucks history when we couldn't wait to see how he performed this year and next. 1 good year and we hand him an 11.6 mil contract. The other thing, about giving wingers. We put the Lotto line together a few times and he still sucked. Every player on the ice shows more intensity and will than this guy. I say trade him and use the money to sign Lindholm, Zadorov and Joshua.
