Holy sh... that was beautiful! I was showing my daughter (a beginning violin student) the 12-string guitar and my wife (a ukulele player) was like, "There's an 8-string Ukulele!". Then I'm like, "Huh, I wonder if there's a double-strung violin". And we found this and ... well .... you blew our minds. That was brilliant. Honestly and truly - that was on another level!

It's really quite interesting to know that there are others who have made instruments like this one. A quite famous Carnatic violinist by the name of Mysore T. Chowdiah designed and built a 7-string (and a 19-string) violin that is basically identical to this one back in the '30s, except that it didn't have a pair for the G string. His goal was really to make something that was considerably louder and projected more because it was an era where amplification was rare (in India, at least). The 19-string was an extension of that with a series of sympathetic strings stretched across the body. Admittedly, the timbre of his instrument was quite poor, and even with all the messing with the design to change the volume and the bass bar design, it just wasn't really getting anywhere in terms of improving irrespective of how well or poorly one plays... so it ultimately never really caught on. From what I can hear so far, yours does sound better, but I think it also helps that the tune and style of playing is well-suited to it.

thanks so much for telling me. I'm a huge fan of the Carnatic violin style and would love to hear it played on a similar violin!

@@DanielHoffmanViolinist Here's an old video clip from a 1943 film in which Chowdiah is playing his 7-string (also his own composition) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j-8eA7Fl4q4.html Other examples (audio only) -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bpfTjPon9xQ.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7OH5EWMjJpY.html My teacher was also a student of Chowdiah, and she originally learned on a 7-string, but pretty much exclusively plays a regular 4-string these days.

Simply amazing! Seeing that double-string instruments sound good, I was thinking on whether I could bow a Turkish baglama, if I change the bridge to a curved one, to allow me to bow the string pairs.

What are the measurements of this? and the tuning? Do you have photos of the details on the internet anywhere?
@willduan4869
@willduan4869 7 лет назад
The tuning I think is just G-D-A-E like a normal violin but the extra 4 strings just double the original string 1 octave above.

How about putting an octave e string next to a standard e and so forth for the A D and G strings? It is same idea as mandolin. Another neat thought is a 4 string erhu with this same idea. Both strings very close to their octave counterpart.

Nice! I have an Emery H. Chase (1871-1952) 8 string violin he made in the 1930's. I am not sure if he made more of them. I building this did you research him? It is really quite similar to yours. I like your playing.

hey Sean- I think cello strings are too thick to be able to use one finger on a pair of strings... but who knows what's possible.

Guitars are approximately in the same range, so you might be able to find a 12 string guitar designed for bowing. I have seen 8 and 12 string bass guitars, where there's double or triple strings. So there could be a 8 string cello too.
