this is exactly what i was trying to explain to someone who reached out to me about the mid-section pre-solo interlude of a classic rock song whose timing he was finding confusing. it's usually transcribed at around 142bpm but the song starts with 4 chords on a solo guitar in Am arpeggiated out in 16th notes at what is clearly 71bpm but as soon as the drums and the cowbell (you might know what song it is from the cowbell! 😂) the song takes on a driving 142bpm 8th note rock feel but the chord changes underneath never waiver from that initial motif from the intro. he was not happy with my assessment 😂this is clearly a song he loves and has been listening to forever and has internalised the 142bpm at the level of muscle memory. i couldn't get him to see or feel the double-time feel-ness of the drums or that it's a kind of implied modulation to a new tempo wherein the drums and percussion are pushing the song along but the underlying tempo was still 71bpm... this was a nice explaination and confirmed my diagnosis. thank you Dr.

Great explanation! Besides jazz, I think lots of classic rock uses this (The Beatles If I Fell and Ticket To Ride, The Byrds Bells Of Rhymny, and tons of shoegaze from the early 90's). I was listening to The Flamingo's version of I Only Have Eyes For You. Sources on the web claim it's in triple time, but the melody is very slow and sounds like it's in 4 time to me (I recall seeing the movie the song was was originally played in on TCM -- Dames, listed as being from 1934 -- and it clearly had 4 beats to the measure). Is it possible that this song has a 'triple time feel'?

Maybe be cool to explain and example 1/2 time feel, 1/2 time? I'll try to visit your site a little more often than this Brenda. Love what you're doing :)
