Freddie Sayers discusses the backlash against Western values with Douglas Murray.
Read the accompanying article here: unherd.com/thepost/douglas-mu...
Listen to the podcast version: shows.acast.com/lockdowntv-wi...
When Douglas Murray was writing his new book The War on the West, Putin had not yet launched an actual war on the edge of Europe. Now, two months after the invasion of Ukraine, has the battle of ideas he writes about been put into perspective? Freddie Sayers speaks to Douglas Murray about the factions of the Right who have been fooled by Putin’s ‘woke West’ propaganda and why the war in Ukraine is not the wake-up call we might have expected.
Thanks to Douglas for returning to the channel. His new book, The War on the West, is out now.

Not at all. Igor Girkin started the war back in 2014, he acknowledged that he had Russian backing and he shot down a passenger plane: He stated: "I sparked the flames of war, war is happening in the East because of me" So the entire conflict was started by the Russians even if you go back beforehand.

@@WinstonSmithGPT This is such emotional claptrap. The 14,000 dead number you state includes Ukrainian Soldiers, DNR Soldiers and civilians. Igor Girkin, the FSB Russian stooge who committed war crimes in Bosnia admitted he started the war with Russian help. So essentially it is known that Russia started the war back in 2014 by their OWN ADMISSION. As far as Banderism, Putin promoted that and anti-Russian sentiment by annexing Crimea, waging economic war on Ukraine in 2013 and trying to corrupt Ukrainian politics with Yanukovych. The road your talking about ... how is that justification for slaughter and massacre of civilians? 9. After 2004 attempts to pull Ukraine into the western sphere of influence were short lived. Yanukovich who was forced to re-do the election after winning the first time round in 2004 won a second time in 2010 and this time there was nothing they could do...until 2014 that is, with the euromaidan unrest and coup that followed. Yanukovich was ousted unconstitutionally and only just got out of Ukraine alive after his limo was attacked. 7 of his government officials were found dead, at first claimed to be suicides but subsequently 5 of which were suspected murders. The US had a clear hand in all of this as we now have a phone call interception between Victoria Nuland then undersecretary of state and Geoffrey Pyatt US ambassador to Ukraine discussing who should take over as prime minister after the coup. Their voice recording was published on Feb 8th the coup occurred 2-3 weeks later. After the coup Yatsenyuk the person Victoria Nuland thought should be the one to take over did in fact become prime minister of Ukraine. These recordings can readily be found online along with countless other bits of evidence proving US meddling in the affairs of Ukraine. Since 2014 Ukraine has become a de facto member of Nato with several thousand troops being trained by Nato operators to Nato standards in Ukraine every year. the US since 2014 and up until the war had provided 2.7 Billion in military aid to Ukraine. We can add a few more billion since as well as the 13.4 billion promised for various other things which you are sure to find with minimal digging will be mostly plundered by corrupt US and Ukrainian politicians. After all Ukraine was known as the money laundering country of choice for many western interest groups including POTUS himself and his son. Evidence for this is very hard to miss. 10. Zelenskyy who was elected as an outsider with the promise of seeking out peace in the Donbas shortly after did a 180 on his promise in no small part due to the fact that he simply could not control the ultranationalists and neo nazis who were now substantive fixtures in the Ukrainian military. He was funded by a Ukrainian Oligarch(kolomoisky) who owned the channel that aired the hit series in which Zelenskyy played a teacher who ended up becoming president of Ukraine. Only Hollywood can come up with a scenario like this however this is not make believe this really did happen. Anyone who does not find all of this incredibly suspect might want to have their sanity checked. Kolomoisky also funded the Azov Battalion. Zelenskyy is just a coked up fool, a useful idiot of you will who has the acting chops to play the part he was given. That part was to stall any and all attempts at peace, violate the Minks ceasefire agreements, go full steam ahead with Nato accession and only a week before the invasion ramp tensions up even further with talks of acquiring nuclear weapons(his secretary of state had made a similar statement a year prior). There's countless other bits of evidence that shows that Russia was given no other choice in this and that with mathematical precision Ukraine and the west at every turn did exactly what was required to bring us where we are right now. It could have been prevented years ago by simply abiding by the Minsk agreement, it could have been prevented a year ago by avoiding Nato accession talks, it could have been done a week before the invasion by not talking about nuclear weapons, it could have been avoided a week after by agreeing to Russia's terms(autonomy and recognition of Donbas, recognition of Crimea, No Nato, denazification) it can still be ended right now if Zelenskyy realizes that he's lost the Donbas, lost Crimea, the south will be lost entirely too and so will Kharkov. If he acts quickly enough he may retain Odessa and Kharkov but it does not seem like he will, not that he doesn't want to, he simply won't be allowed to. The US by the open admission of many US politicians will fight the Russians to the last Ukrainian. I believe it was congressman Schiff several years ago that said "we are fighting them(the Russians) in Ukraine so that we do not have to fight them at home" It is truly sad what is happening in Ukraine and to the Ukrainian people but what is even sadder is that there are still people that have been propagandized and brain washed to no end(including our genius friend Douglas Murray) and still believe the western media/MIC/establishment narrative and this only serves to further the suffering of the Ukrainian people(and to be clear ethnic Russians in Ukraine are ALSO Ukrainians who have been fighting a civil war since the US supported coup of 2014). Shame on you Douglas Murray, shame on you for being so bloody narrowminded and obtuse and failing to just open up a history book do some proper research to see that all of this is well documented and out there for anyone to see if only they had the integrity to examine the other side of the coin and not buy what they've been sold by the media wholesale. I mean this man fought a war against the leftist media for 5-6 years missing no opportunity to call them out on their lies yet now suddenly parrots their whole narrative without question. His late friend Roger Scruton said something similar about one of the root causes of this type of thinking. “A writer who says that there are no truths, or that all truth is 'merely relative,' is asking you not to believe him. So don't. Deconstruction deconstructs itself, and disappears up its own behind, leaving only a disembodied smile and a faint smell of sulphur.”

11. Following the dissolution of the soviet Union Russia sought out assurances that Nato would not expand eastward in order to preserve stability in the region. The US promised they would not, yet only 5 years later violated their promise and in the decade that followed admitted no fewer than 14 former soviet nations into Nato in effect encircling Russia despite their frequent protestations to this. Finally Russia drew a red line with Georgia and now Ukraine. The belligerence of Nato in this regard is unprecedented, and to think that this war could have been avoided had the US left well enough alone as countless level headed western politicians and intellectuals had warned(including Kissinger, Dr Mearsheimer, and many others). This is just a small sampling of the situation in Ukraine showing that Russia was given no other choice in this and that with mathematical precision Ukraine and the west at every turn did exactly what was required to bring us where we are right now. I completely disagree with the added closing statement of Freddie Sayers' after having concluded this extremely interesting interview, without Douglas Murray having the possibility to respond: Putin's rapacious war in Ukraine has NOTHING to do with what Douglas Murray is beautifully & fact-based & logically arguing in his book, no matter how many times, since the very beginning of the interview, Freddie had tried to push such treacherous idea. Unheard of stratagem, if you ask me, when considering an otherwise honest interview.

@@MrCod18 Agreed up to a point: In this interview Freddie had a twisted, obscure argument to push through (starkly evident at 47:49 to 48:42 [Freddie's hidden agenda from the start of his dishonest interview, to which he returns at the crucial closing of his interview] ) ... AND Douglas' polite response [48:43 to 48:57 ] : “I don't regognize the list you just gave out. The list you just gave out IS NOT the list I would give out. It`s... say... a distorted version of the list that I would say of what needs to be recaptured [by the west]”. Then, Freddie tries to push his twisted argument yet again, interrupting Douglas' rebuttal and shifting his twisted argumentation dishonestly [49:03 to 49.20 ], a move to which, of course, Douglas responds irately afterwards. FURTHERMORE, Freddie's EDITED OPENING of the clip with the words of Douglas Murray taken out of context [00:00 to 00:13] TOGETHER WITH his EDITED ENDING mentioned in my previous response [59:52 till end], plus the above mentioned FACTS clearly evidence my position: Freddie couldn't logically argue his obscure plan to trash Douglas Murray excellent essay, “The War on the West”, loaded with verifiable facts as always, so he edited the clip like a typical woke would do. By pumping his obscure, twisted lie, Freddie willfully contributed to making our society stupider and more vulberable (using Douglas' own words). I have unending contempt for Freddie in this case (again using Dougla's own words). I am glad it totally backfired, despite Freddie's dishonest edition of the interview (and wonder whether some of Dougla's answers might not have been edited as well). Otherwise, it was quite an interesting interview: Douglas is a brilliant orator with an excellent command of the English language and I share all of his fact-based arguments, well-written book after well-written book.

Do you understand, that since world war 2, Russia was THE ONLY power on the continent that either suppressed or openly warred against its neighbors. Since WW2, not one European county invaded its neighbor - except Russia. Does that matter to you at all? Or do you just want to be in opposition? Maybe this is a chance to unite liberals and conservatives around a worthy cause? But if not, then you're exactly the person Murray writes about. You see, he understands that what ukraine is fighting for is actually most conservatives' dream. It's a Christian country that wants to live in democracy and free markets. It struggled, yes. As a citizen of the planet earth, and an Asian living in a European country surrounded by loving European white, yellow, black friends of mine, I would also be completely supporting his idea about not being guilty of the things to do with slavery or colonialism. I truly respect and admire Murray for his astute observations, depth of knowledge, and of course his wit. However, this Ukraine fever which has gripped all spectrums of erudite philosophy has shown me many of the wisest among us in the West have this strange blind spot when it comes to Putin. As a child of the 80s, I grew up with Rambo, Red Dawn, and the pride of our apparent win in the cold war. I say apparent because I am no longer so sure we did win, but that is another topic. Now, I was still rather young when the Berlin Wall collapsed, though I do remember Roger doing his typical hypocritical thing of this bleeding heart pseudo-socialist capitalizing on a golden moment for his opus to make headlines again. Though young, I fully understood the magnitude of what was happening and why grown men were crying whilst hacking at the concrete. When the Soviet Union collapsed, I too understood the gravity of that. What I remember most about the next couple years, in this context, was the absolute nightmare nearly every Russian was living in. I heard about people being hungry, where a wheelbarrow of rubles would likely not get that loaf of bread that day. I heard stories of unbelievable spikes in violent crime. I heard one could go to Russia and buy ANYTHING for just a little bit of American dollars, be it a nuclear attack sub, or an 11 year old girl strung out on god knows what. What I was too young and naïve to understand then, was that the powerful among us who had long worked to hunt the Russian bear was responsible for much of this. At a certain point in my life, not that long ago really, I came to understand the Soviet Union was not the only super power to subject it's citizenry to propaganda; we too had long been subjected to our own Pravda. If Trump succeeded at anything, it was waking millions to this. So for the last six years, as we watched our benevolent "news" organizations flat out lie to us time and time again about everything consequential, be it Russia! Russia! Russia!, Sandman, Juicy, that it's perfectly fine to start grooming your child to become the opposite sex because at 3 years old they said they were a boy and not a girl as the doctor at the delivery had "guessed" and putting them on puberty blocking hormones (used off label, of course) is a great idea cause kids never make poor decisions, especially when they have no idea what any of it means but you get to be such a highly virtuous parent now, no matter we know nothing about the long-term effects and certainly they can change their mind at any time and puberty will pick up where is was put on hold and your son will certainly not be stuck in a state of permanent pre-adolescence, or if they want to chop their breasts off at 14, well they can just get new ones later if need be... but I digress. "Mostly peaceful" protests. Covid will not spread if you congregate to peacefully burn down police departments. The vaccine that is so effective we had to redefine what a vaccine is. Etc., etc, etc. Then Putin decides to invade without any just cause and for the first time in years, all the "mews" networks, establishment Republicans and Democrats, and even George Sorros himself all seem to be reading from the same script. Russia bad! Russia incompetent! Putin is only starting with Ukraine, next it's the other areas lost when the Soviets fell because he has always dreamed of reconstituting the Soviet Union. Putin very bad man! To my utter amazement and horror, everyone who was quite aware of the daily lies for the last six years , suddenly believe everything these constant liars spout without question. Seriously? Has everyone learned nothing? Oh look, more censoring of opinions they don't like. As we all know, you only censor that which you fear, such as the truth. Then it hit me: What if my whole life since 1998 I had been imbibing a super frequent and favorite propaganda drink called, "Villain Vladimir"? What if everything mentioned about new-Hitler is more like a caricature? So I decided to look around for some non-cathedral approved information. I learned quite a bit which seems much more plausible than the corporate media nonsense, which I am decidedly saddened to see Mr. Murray seems to be reflexively regurgitating. It turns out, Putin is not a dictator, at least not in the traditional sense. He has always been democratically elected. Not by 98%, like a dictator, but at times 54%. Putin seems to be very popular in Russia. But how, if he is Hitler and murders his competition and terrorizes the populace? Well, during those dark years after our cold war "win", we did not behave like the virtuous spreaders of democracy we always have claimed to be. We were over there getting our just desserts, a feeding frenzy on the carcass of the Russian bear. Those Russians selling us front row tickets to the greatest show on earth, "America rapes and pillages a defeated nation" quickly became the oligarchs. It seemed like we would get our 60 or 70 year old wish, Russia would become the crown jewel in our empire and the latest and greatest big little colony. But someone there stood up and actually stopped us. Putin, who contrary to popular myth, while indeed in the FSB, was never any great spy chief. While in the KGB, he did not run any spy rings, or any assets. He was a back office paper-pushing attorney. But apparently, one of the few who was not corrupt, and thus rose quickly through the ranks. He was not enriching himself by allying with the West to sell out his country. Quite the opposite in fact. He seemed to believe in something we would recognize - his country and its people. He detailed a plan on mot only halting the destruction of Russia by the West, but making Russia great again. Where have I heard that before? When he was tapped to be president, he wasted no time. He told the oligarchs they could remain and keep all their new money if they stopped stripping wealth for the West and paid a flat 10% tax, and stayed out of politics. Some left, many stayed. They could continue building wealth as long as it was in a manner that also benefitted the struggling people. He was amazingly effective a this task. In no time, Russia's economy stabilized, and peoples lives began to vastly improve. Most blue collar workers now have more wealth than ever before. Naturally, we did not take too kindly to this, and thus, Putin the villain was born. And oh, how we hate this man for not playing ball, and so the villainy ensued. Early on, Putin told Clinton maybe Russia could join NATO now. Clinton said Hell No! We had perhaps the one great moment to do something truly great. Help, rather than rape Russia, and earn an extremely great and important ally. But alas, we chose not to. After all, how can NATO continue to exist if Russia is a member? Compared to many of his contemporaries, Putin was quite pro-western. He grew up right after WW2, or the "Great War" as the Russians know it. In fact, the Great War lies deep in the subconscious or every Russian. Putin remembers the city he grew up in, St Petersburg, the most pro-Western city in Russia, decimated as a kid. People ate rats to survive for 5 years. Putin learned a deep-seeded fear of war. One can visit the mass graves near many of the cities the Germans tried to take. Football field sized mas graves, 20,000 Russians buried in each, stretching out to the horizons. He even got a Western education in law. So as NATO continuously inched closer around it's borders, Putin was not paranoid to see the West was up to the same old games. He had said for years Ukraine joining NATO would be crossing a red line. He saw the writing on the wall. He took steps to insulate the Russian economy against our favorite weapon, sanctions, even though they never seem to work. I don't recall them working in Iran even though they said any day now, the mullahs will be thrown out. All they seem to do is turn the populations against us. Funny how all the stories which periodically popped up in places like the New York Times over the last 8 years or so talking about Ukraine's Neo-Nazi problem, nobody seemed to recall those now. I am not saying Putin is a good guy, or any of that. But why do so many of these people that are so smart, educated, historically knowledgeable, and keen on so many issues we face today suddenly turn into idiots when it comes to Putin and not recognize at least some of what they think about him and his motives were implanted by these globalist types because he will not bow to their whims. Same reason they hate Orban, Mr. Murray, does Russia not have a right to self-defense at it's own borders against an existential threat? How many nations have we invaded in the last 30 years on the same precepts? Did we not lie to invade Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Lebanon, etc? Mr. Murray, should Russia allow the Azov battalions to shell and slaughter Russian speakers for the last 8 years in the Donbass, ignoring the Minsk accords? Mr. Murray, is it OK we orchestrated the 2014 coup and let Victoria Nuland to pick and choose which Neo-Nazis to put in key positions in the Zelensky regime? Mr. Murray, should we continue doing everything we can think of to prolong this war Ukraine has no chance of winning, or even never did, ensuring only more Ukrainians are slaughtered and preventing Zelensky from coming to terms with Russia, which pretty soon there will be nothing left of Ukraine, the most corrupt place in all of Europe, where Biden and many others are up to all kinds of corrupt enterprises; where we are running 20 or 30 bio weapons research labs even though we banned them?

I am often concerned for both the hyperbolic iconoclasm of so-called “left” culture warriors but also the idolatry of conservatives and the right wing. And how both positions don’t bring clarity. Ironically both play into propaganda that serve a very small elite which we protect from scrutiny. As a Left Progressive I am upset that the New York council would take down a Jefferson statue because of what I see as an exaggeration of Jefferson’s racism in regards to those of African descent. It is usually doesn’t have nuances like the fact that Jefferson actually proposed that colonialist should inter-marry with native Americans. Or the fact that he attempted to abolish slavery. I have even seem some make him the equal to Hitler which is an irresponsible assertion. Instead the New York council should expand the Jeffersonian ideal and claim that affordable housing in NYC is a Human Right, if you read his writing you can easily draw this conclusion. On the other hand I have seen conservatives provide a very fake idolatrous version of Jefferson, most glaringly lies of omission, for example omitting that Jefferson was very anti-monopoly and very often anti-capitalist. It can be best said he was for very small types of capitalism that of the yeoman farmer and not the monopolist. And he certainly was not against redistributionist towards greater equality, striving for equal land distribution and free public education prove he was very much interested in public welfare. Ironically in this one controversy the Left shoots them selves in the foot by smearing a past left hero, while many on the right believe an exploitive capitalist myth. I believe an HONEST look at Jefferson would actually serve both the right and the left population because he was a truly exceptional statesman that wrestled with difficult issue based on a coherent set of values and shared principles. I believe this about a lot of history. I have a certain type of conservativism as a progressive because the West does have a unique 500 year progressive history. You might say from Martin Luther to Martin Luther King Jr.

Hear, hear! I absolutely agree that the West is undergoing an OVER CORRECTION to its traditional colonialist views; for example, extremist identity politics replacing the glorification of the British Empire in the UK. I don't see the extreme right wing and the extreme left as being polls apart - they bear much in common; intolerance, of course, but there are actual overlaps in their beliefs - for example, a lot of anti semitism is promoted by the extreme left Momentum movement in the UK.

.... how on earth can you possibly believe such nonsense.... Our entire cultural/academic aparatus has been carrying out demoralization innitaives in order to destabilize western populations. This is a requisite to establishing a world government. Another key component of the overarching stratagem is demographic weaponization against white people in their own nations. On facet of this is the total overhauling of western culture whilst prohibiting participation from whites. The rapidity of these culture/societal shifts alone is enough to create atomization and loathing. Go read thre white papers of these global elite organizations, they have been documenting their plans fot decades - even centuries. These would be people who support what someone like John Mearsheimer would call "liberal hegemony", which in practice is no different for those subjected to it than "neoconservative" interventionism. There are people on both the authentic left *and* the right who oppose this imperialist proxy war against Russia.

From my perspective, Douglas makes a very good point about people wanting a reasonable view of their history, in which they are allowed to have some some pride, rather than be kicked round for past injustices they never perpetrated. He objects to the rising notion that whites must continually self-denigrate in order to prove their appreciation of others. Freddie wastes no time in tying Douglas' defense of rational, self-regard to a Putinesque type of cultural backlash characterized by a masculine sense of fearless cultural superiority. Strikes me as a cheap stretch. Just because people are unwilling to be masochists, does not make them bullies. Good for Douglas for pushing back. As a young woman my soft-hearted openness and inclusivity drew me towards ideals the left seemed to profess. But it was my love of truth that matured me towards a more conservative world view. Of course, there are good people of all stripes and in all walks, but I found more vitriol, more mean-spirited schadenfreude and more intellectual dishonesty and irrationality on the left than I ever witnessed in conservative circles. Refusal play the masochist for cultural approval does not make one a bully. The real bullies are those who try to belittle and shame others into submission. The courage to stand up to bullies does not come from masculine arrogance as Freddy seems to suggest - it comes from a love of the truth and goodness - attributes that are not exclusive to men.

11. Following the dissolution of the soviet Union Russia sought out assurances that Nato would not expand eastward in order to preserve stability in the region. The US promised they would not yet only 5 years later violated their promise and in the decade that followed admitted no fewer than 14 former soviet nations into Nato in effect encircling Russia despite their frequent protestations to this. Finally Russia drew a red line with Georgia and now Ukraine. The belligerence of Nato in this regard is unprecedented, and to think that this war could have been avoided had the US left well enough alone as countless level headed western politicians and intellectuals had warned(including Kissinger, Prof. Mearsheimer, and many others). This is just a small sampling of the situation in Ukraine showing that Russia was given no other choice in this and that with mathematical precision Ukraine and the west at every turn did exactly what was required to bring us where we are right now. Democracy can be viewed as a Greek Trireme. You have rowers on the left, rowers on the right. You need both sides rowing to keep the ship moving forwards. If rowers from one side are missing, doesn’t matter which, the ship will start to go round in a circle. If both sides pull too hard there’s a good chance that oars will snag or break and the ship will either grind to a halt and get washed up on a sandbar. So remember people, row, row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily isn’t life a dream?

West is best is ignoring the developed Asian countries. I suggest Taiwan. If based on GDP PPP per capita Taiwan is ahead of those "poor" countries like Germany, Sweden, Australia... Socially liberal (eg gay marriage and very free media), great health system, far less of a crazed wokeness problem than the West etc. Not arguing against the West but suggesting that some of the better condition Asian countries are also worthy of merit (Japan would be another example).

@@scotlandtheinsane3359 Taiwan has about the same population as Australia (about 24 million). Whilst Taiwan is certainly not huge it is not a very small island nation like Singapore either. Taiwan is about 400km long and has huge moutains etc on the main island and has a number of other smaller islands under Taiwanese control some of which are quite far away. Taiwan is roughly in the middle of all countries for absolute size of countries with about 54 percent of countries being larger and 46 percent smaller. prefer PPP because it better accounts for cost of living/living standards than absolute GDP. It is no use earning huge money if the cost of living is so insane you can't save anything. Taiwan has almost free health care, not too high rents, low priced public transport, low crime rates, low drug addiction rates, high education rates etc. So the standard of living is really better than in say Hong Kong where the cost of living is much higher. My main point is however it is not just the West we should look to but developed democracies. Using only the West as the one right way won't help convince other countries in Asia, Africa etc that democracies with economic freedom too are the best way forward (which I believe is the case) and showing that it can work elsewhere with examples like Taiwan is thus important. It also comes across as incredibly arrogant to people who are not from the West to suggest that only the West has the answer when Asia has several countries with good standards of living.

I can recall 1983 when Maurice Bishop, Premier in Grenada was ousted from leadership by USA because he was getting too friendly with the Cubans and Soviets. America went in because the Soviets were getting too close to their “backyard” as it was phrased by Reagan at the time. I remember the Iraq ii war - the bad dictator was used, along with fake weapons of mass destruction lies to shock and awe a country into a bloody war. I don't think Iraqis appreciated the west's help then either. The military aid being sent to Ukraine will kill many Ukrainians and others, and reduce their country further to rubble. I do wonder that if the hot conflict was in the western countries who are keen to escalate war with Russia, there may be less enthusiasm. The price of war is so high - it's not a movie.

Why has he had the nerve to refuse any peace talks or negotiations? Douglas' sniping against those who dissent against the mainstream narrative on Russia and co-operation with vilification of Putin are not the most salutary opinions he expresses in the interview but are not the subject of his book. He suggests that it is the War on the West that has led to support for patriotic populism, foolish though Murray considers such support to be.
