I think the director has made this film have a much more powerful effect because she's not an animal right's activist. She's not advocating boycotting sea world but telling you to be more informed, and she's being honest in saying she took her kids. She isn't falsely claiming sea world trainers are doing animal cruelty, but she is questioning if captivity is the best environment for them really, while understanding the trainrd love the whale. She doesn't judge or alienate the public and I feel that's why she's more persuasive without having to watch the whole movie.

I'm from the generation that grew up watching Free Willy. So I'm glad that blackfish has again resurged those issues back into the conversation for the next generation of kids to become passionate about this cause.

I have seen this film on Netflix so perhaps now even more people yet another wave of people seeing it. You can't help but see and be interested in the picture of the Orca Full with BLACK FISH to get your attention. I LOVE Orca and have been privileged to see them in the wild and NEVER even thought to go to Sea World to see them and I live in Florida!!! Sea World, I'm sure is just hoping this just die's down and goes away. It is up to The World not to let it.

really glad to hear that the film is doing well. the way we as humans treat animals is appalling and this film helps get that point across.

You did an amazing job! You brought awareness to underlining issues about not just killer whales but animals in general that are held in captivity. The scientific side of the documentary is very informative and it has completely blown me away. It's sad that even though this information is out there nobody (Sea World) is doing anything to change the way these animals are being treated. And also bringing forth all the lies that have been hidden in the process. Now we need to stand up and have a full blown criminal investigation to help these animals.

The trick is to get this film out to people who are not already in the choir. That kind of work is key. How to do it, because I have heard that people are still lining up at Sea World. I don't know if it's just pure selfishness, an inability to see and hear, or the work of Sea World in twisting the truth in their favour. This message has travelled far, but needs to travel further and longer!

mythbuster it’s because people research instead of being biased due to ONE SINGULAR FILM. It’s not selfishness or “twisting” the truth. It’s called knowledge. Watched free willy? Yeah he the real willy(keiko) died, but none of you cared after he was released, all you guys cared about was “HES FREE” he didn’t live a happy life in the wild

When I was 5 or so I saw a duck in my backyard. My grandpa was watching over me, gardening. I was so amazed by that beautiful duck with her pretty brown dappled feathers and I remember wanting to have it as a pet. But I had no concept of what was good for the duck. So I snuck up behind the duck, and grabbed it... by the neck. It immediately started flapping its wings in a panic and trying to get away and honking very loudly. I was completely frozen with shock, my hand going limp but still holding onto the duck. This isn't what was supposed to happen! The duck was supposed to magically become my best friend and companion (and maybe teach me how to fly). Not this thrashing, terrified, helpless, flapping bird in my hand, desperate to get away from me. I remember looking down at my little hand as if it wasn't my own, it looked so alien in that moment. I remember what my face felt like in that moment. Just complete shock and horror and confusion. My grandpa's voice rang out, furious and booming: "Sarah, you let that duck go RIGHT NOW!" And I unfroze and let the duck go (surprised she didn't come back around and give me a few bites for terrorizing her) and I ran so fast to my grandpa, not because I was afraid of the duck. I wasn't. I went to him, just crying my eyes out in shame and shock and begging him to understand. I remember saying over and over to him, "I didn't know. I didn't mean to, Grandpa, I'm sorry. Is she okay? Is she going to be okay?" I felt so, so horrible. My grandpa took my tiny hands in his big rough ones and looked at me with such compassion and sympathy, but he didn't smile. "You hurt that duck, Sarah. People are not supposed to own wild animals. You scared her. You're not going to do that again, are you?", he said as he gently but persistently pressed my little fingers between his palms. I rubbed my eyes and nodded, making a promise to him that I would never do it again. I think that was my first real taste of regret, the feeling of ashes in my mouth and my heart sinking like a stone. My obsession, my curiosity, my admiration had hurt that duck, and I knew it. I wanted to have it for my own, but it was never meant to belong to me or anyone else. I was 5. I needed my grandpa to tell me I was hurting the duck for me to understand what I had done. Blackfish reminds me of my grandfather. Miss you Grandpa. You helped make me who I am today.

STOP BANDWAGONING AND START FIXING A REAL PROBLEM INSTEAD OF A NON-EXISTING PROBLEM

i've been to seaworld twice in my lifetime the one in texas when i was younger and more recently i love animals i was fascinated and amazed i had a dream of working there but even when i was little it bugged me that the animals particularly the whales and dolphins had these little pools they swam in just concrete boxes i would leave conflicted halfway sad. on a positive note it reinforced my love for animals thats probably the best if not only good thing about is that it gives children a way to experience these amazing creatures up close, but on the other hand should i ever have children i probably wont take them to seaworld if they want to see ocean animals i'll take them to the ocean.

Very great and humble filmmaker! Not being an activist helped her probably, as her film isn't tinged by idealism and instead comes across very honest. She's underselling her movie, when she's saying: "most people seeing it probably are people already on board with the message." This film took a lot of people by surprise and changed a lot of minds. I had no idea that taming an orca would be any different than me caring for my cat - now I see how naive I was.

Making money out of people feelings is kind of a jackpot. You just find a theme that could reach people hearts, make a way to touch them (like a movie) and done. Just like Blackfish many movies and "Documentals" make money making you feel just like you did when you got out of the theater when the movie ended, about 90 minutes after you've already paid...

1 been a vegetarian since childhood bc I grew up on a small farm (70-80:ies) n connecting my friends to what was given on my plate...I couldn't (now vegan), 2 always thought my daughters not to run after birds etc to respect all our fellow living creaturus that we share our planet with. But once my daughter and some friends got free circus tickets. She was around 5 and I decided bc she n friends really wanted to go....clowns, acrobatics etc ...but also an elephant front n centre on the poster. It was hard, hate to help the demand. But as it turns out the group was able to see some of the backstage...where the elephant was kept n my daughter n her best friend soon said it was sad for the elephant....that she should be on the savanna having babies etc. So I think my nightmare turned out better. Tho not all of the children spoke about it in the same way.

You do realise if Tilikum is freed that whale will be exposed to a shit ton of environments, temperatures, bacterias and situations that he isn't used to and won't have the experience of life skills to cope with. After spending his entire life in a controlled and secure environment, releasing him into the wild will do that whale far more harm than good. You want to send him back out into ocean just so you can go to bed feeling better about yourselves? Those are selfish reasons. So many lives and efforts go into the care of these creatures in these situations, they only have the best intention for that animal in mind. And I'm not saying that Tilikums capture in the 70s was justified because it's not, it was an awful thing to have happen but the mindsets of people were much different back then. But now we need to focus on the best intentions for the whale during this time and sending him back out into the ocean will most likely be the worst decision. Not to mention that more than half of the information and "facts" stated in this Blackfish documentary are incredibly inaccurate and it's sending ignorant people on tangents, signing petitions and what not without doing any meaningful research themselves. Stop giving people mindless power when in reality they don't really know what their doing or what their actions are going to cause. Just because it's in the format of a fancy documentary and has all these dramatic effects and so called "facts" about court hearings and the deaths of the trainers doesn't mean it's accurate. Do your own research.

@tilikumtim5562 10 лет назад
"And I'm not saying that Tilikums capture in the 70s was justified because it's not, it was an awful thing to have happen but the mindsets of people were much different back then" Didn't Seaworld and other aquariums pay for 28 wild beluga whales to be captured from Russia not too long ago? Seems their mindset hasn't changed all that much. And Seaworld stopped capturing orca's from US waters due to the outcry from the public which caused laws to be brought in to stop these captures; it wasn't as if Seaworld just had a change of heart and stopped capturing them! They also only stopped buying dolphins from Taiji when they got found out and couldn't deny it any longer. But you are right, Tilikum could never be released back into the wild. The captivity/entertainment industry has robbed him of his right to be a normal orca.

She suggested releasing him into an ocean pen, which means he is in the ocean but is still not completely free, meaning he can swim let's say a mile and enjoy the rhythm of the ocean without having to perform and do tricks, but his health can still be checked, given medications, fed if need be etc. Here's an interesting article about another whale called Keiko (the whale from Free Willy) who was released to an ocean pen & then subsequently freed into the wild.

Lauren-Elizabeth Books keiko died a few years in the wild. Can’t wait for someone to reply “5 IS NOT FEW” he lived in sea water for five years but in the actual wild was only a few years and he died alone without a pod mourning for him cause he either left the pod or the pod didn’t accept him. He also seeked for human attention more than orca attention. Those “tricks” are called breeching also known as orca behaviour, meaning it’s done in the wild, people just taught them to do them on command, like how you would teach your dog to sit with your fingers.

What People doest't see, is that Blackfish made more than 2.000.000 $ in box office and neither a cent of that money is going towards orcas care. It is actually in Gabriela's Cowperthwaite and other movie makers pockets. On the other hand, SeaWorld spends money in the preservation of not only orcas, but also other marine and all types of animal species. Of course the biggest part of money is going towards the stocks and bank accounts, but they also show their interest in animal care and preservation

HI I'm a perso Captive orca grind their teeth to pulp, are on antibiotics so often they start developing resistant strains of bacteria, they get fungal infections in spite of the antifungals they get. Captive orcas show a level of agression never seen in the wild, they fight each other regularly and attack their trainers. They log most of the time they're not performing, head bob, vomit up their food to then eat it again,... What more do these animals have to do to show you they're miserable? How many more signs of distress can they possibly show? They're allready showing pretty much every sign of utter misery out there ... You're just not willing to see it.

This woman has said, she knows Nothing about animals, nothing about training animals, nothing about anything but making documentary's. The problem here is, how can one document something they have no knowledge of? She talks around the questions, she is clearly not addressing some important issues. She knows nothing about animal advocacy, She clearly admits she had no background in any area. This is redundant, boring and I am personally insulted. I heard the sirens go off the day Dawn died, was staying a few blocks from the park. Since you are going to be forever connected to this issue, as she puts, in her dna, perhaps she should empower herself, so she does not look so foolish in her next interview. She can bat her eyes all day long, and it won't fool people. Yes she trashed seaworld, why not? She is shocked at the number of people that are watching her movie, and reacting online, well perhaps because your audience today, were all the millions and billions of people around the world who have been to Seaworld. Naturally every single person in the world would have a connection to Seaworld. Again, how can anyone do a documentary on something that they do no personal research on. She claims she just asked questions, yet with no background knowledge, how could she know what questions to ask? Shameful and I hope the girl whose video was used Holly Byrd finds someway to hold you accountable.

That's one of the reasons the film is so powerful. She went into the project with no preconceived notions and let the documentation and interviews tell the story. Her skills as a documentarian were obviously sufficient to inform her story and, more importantly, the result of the film is that it is no longer acceptable to keep these animals in captivity. Ms. Cowperthwaite made the world a better place. Few can make this claim. Idiotic comment.

I'm happy for this chic that her movie is a hit... But all this BS is putting Sea World out of business. For years Sea World has established themselves as leaders in research, study, RESCUE, education and display of these amazing animals. The display of these animals has inspired millions like myself to learn about these animals and maintain a conservation based mentality regarding animals and the environment. just like any zoo, Sea World simply presents their animals and the amazing things that they can do with hopes that more and more will conserve, study, and learn to better coexist with these miracles that only God can create. I have nothing against this chic, but her movie is propaganda, not fact.
