Dr James Muecke AM is a South Australian based ophthalmologist and visiting consultant at Royal Adelaide and Women’s and Children’s Hospitals. Dr. Muecke graduated with Honours from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1987. Following his internship, James lived and worked as a doctor in Africa and subsequently as an eye surgeon in the Middle East, battling malaria, wild animals, and rebel soldiers. He founded Sight For All in 2008, turning his boundless energy into a fight against blindness in the Aboriginal communities of Australia and some of the poorest countries of Asia and Africa.
Dr. Muecke's commitment to social impact and humanitarian endeavours has earned him a string of awards. He received an Outstanding Service to the Prevention of Blindness award by the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 2011, a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012, a South Australian Community Achievement Award in 2013, the Australian Medical Association’s President’s Leadership Award in 2013, Ernst & Young’s Social Entrepreneur for Australia in 2015 and The University of Adelaide’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2019. In 2020, Dr. Muecke was named Australian of the Year and vowed to use his platform to advocate for measures to tackle preventable blindness caused by diabetes.

I’ve been doing TRF and LCHF and on my 6th week I’ve lost 18lbs without exercise. This is my lifestyle now and I ❤ it! Never going back to high carb, high sugar, eating more than 2x a day. I have lots of energy. I don’t have food coma anymore. I sleep and wake up really well. My skin is clear. My hair and nails are shiny and strong.❤❤❤I save energy, time and money!

I worked as a nurse in a long term care facility with 64 residents in Canada. Many of them were diabetics on high doses of various types of insulin, yet the meals and desserts served only aggravated their diabetes, resulting in daily episodes of hyperglycemia for those clients, who ended up receiving extra doses of insulin to reduce their blood sugars. I spoke of the problem many times with the dietician but to no avail. It was most frustrating. I know the benefits of a LCHF diet as it helped me reverse my T2D in a few months.

@clairehachey2189 My daughter is a brainwashed, university degreed nutritionist who insists on the Canada Food Guide (or My Plate...or whatever it's called). High carbohydrates, through grains and "healthy fruits and vegetables," dominate their family's eating, and seed oils are prominent (I.e. margarine and canola oil). Low fat dairy is poured on their cereal and they don't eat very much meat and eggs. I've noticed that colds and the flu is running through their home far too often, but there's no connection to the eating practices they engage in. I'm not university-educated, but I'm well educated through books, podcasts, and videos, and I know they could do better for their health if my daughter would open her mind and research the benefits that I've learned from presenters through sites such as this one. Keep up your vigilance, Claire. The residents need you.

Same in germany: as a teacher i am told to educate kids to eat 6 times a day and to prefere carbohydrates. Less meat and more pufa's..... And most of my colleges are in constant fear of kids dying from hunger.... this leads to constant eating and more token systems based on sweets. And every first grade school is provided with free fruits for the children for that extra fructose boost. There is so much money involved...

Optometrist here. I've seen so many people lose their vision from diabetes it's crazy. The worst part is, I show them pictures of their bleeding retinas, but they won't change their eating habits. When it hits their central vision they are ready to change, but by then there is permanent damage and they need lots of laser surgery and/or ocular injections to save their sight. People are hard-headed.

*Thank you Dr James Muecke and Low Carb DownUnder* . It was because of the free information that I found about low carb diet when researching diabetes after being diagnosed in Oct 2021 that I managed to put my diabetes into remission after only 3 months. My fatty liver, which was moderate in 2019 (and possibly worse after that year) is now mild after 1 year of eating low carb. I've lost 20% of my body weight (80kg to 64kg), my waist has gone from 44" to 38", my blood pressure has gone down and my cholesterol numbers are excellent. But because my LDL is high (other ratios are great) GP and cardiologist both want me to take a statin. No way. I'm 65 year old female with a recent CAC score of 0. I feel very blessed that I've been able to take charge of my health through such a simple and non drug method.

I don't think awareness campaigns or education are the answer. People know that sugar is bad. Most nurses and many doctors in hospitals are overweight. The truth is, people are addicted. They do not eat to relieve hunger, they eat for pleasure. To get their next fix. To relieve stress. The main issue is the food environment. Manufacturers have created all of these ultra-processed foods, and it's everywhere, on almost every supermarket shelf, every vending machine, everywhere you go. And the manufacturers have the wealth and lobbying power to ensure that nothing will be done. They get children hooked from a young age with colourful packaging and adverts.

Yes, I too think people know that sugar is not good for health, but I do not believe they understand all the implications and just why it is bad. Without sufficient saturated fat, trying to cut down on sugars will leave them with hunger pains, so they are defeated from within whenever they try. Without sufficient quality meat protein, they will be undernourished, so once again their bodies will be sending our hunger signals to say, hey! I don't have enough nutrients to run the body, send me more food. It is not enough to know that sugar harms; the message needs to educate on the basics of how our system works. We need to stop with the short messaging mantra, and educate in a straightforward manner. We all have brains, we just need good teachers that fully inform.

The current guidelines support the current jobs economy. They're trying to inspire changes in jobs away from the carbs based jobs, but that takes time. Green energy jobs, LGBTetc related jobs (terrible but it's replacing carbs caused medical work, same with virus scare tactics... replaces carbs jobs). Even more child neglect & crime requires jobs to deal with that. I'm not sure how I would go about inspiring job replacements for carbs related jobs. I think I would inspire more farming related jobs like Joel Salatin's farm, nut trees & whatever needed for a massive increase in small scale farming and networking for micro farms even in apartments you can grow a LOT of food to sell frequently. Accounting & tax paperwork services would free small farmers to focus on production they enjoy rather than paperwork. I hate that aspect of farming, so have been reluctant to start a farming career. But healthy fats low carb farming can help our community more than vaccines & masks ever could, and can be done with much less energy use than low fat high carb food systems. I just started using a luffa sponge in the kitchen that I grew, and I'm so excited about it!!!! When they get worn out, I can burn them as heat for our home. Same with the large thick sunchoke stems that I put in the portable garden barn to cut up soon as "firewood". I even found a way to prepare them that can't cause gas. They are absolutely delicious like potatoes but low glycemic!!! And perennial, extremely easy to grow. Harvest & replant sections like you would with garlic. But Sunchokes can be left in the ground until spring, mulched heavily to prevent the ground from freezing, so you can harvest as you need them so no autumn rush to deal with that harvest. Very convenient!! Very gassy if not prepared correctly though. But you never have to buy them again. The Native Americans planted them along trails so they would always have food available if needed. The green leaves/stems are good livestock feed too, probably edible for people. High in protein. Going to look up how to grow a lot of farm animal feed. It's really expensive to buy organic bagged feed. I want to do a worm farm, and mealworms, maybe crickets too. And to grow fresh greens all winter for the poultry, with the least amount of purchased every possible if any. Zero preferably. Need a wood burner in my greenhouse.

I get so tired of hearing about the Mediterranean diet. It just is a feel good sound. It is leading to the confusion. There is one diet and that is the very low carbohydrate diet to reverse diabetes. Talking about vegetarian will ultimately lead people down the path to neurodegenerative disease. BTW, my 94 year old dad grew up on the waters of the Mediterranean. He did and continues to consume a Mediterranean diet. Each village had their own diet. Don’t co-opt an indigenous diet and make it something that should be spread around the world.

Dr. Muecke, I have been told I have diabetic retinopathy. When they talked surgery I felt desperate. I put cayenne residue in them and that was over 2 years ago. Doctors had quite a stir but now he won't even speak to me about my condition, he just sends info to my primary care provider, leaving me in the dark. I understand his training is surgery but my goal is to avoid that if at all possible. I do not know how often I should put the c.r. in my eyes? Hurts terribly for 3min or so.

With all due respect, I call bullshit on this. The problem is not evil food companies that sneak around. The problem is ignorant or cowardly scientists and physicians that can't or won't succinctly state what the problem is, and what the solution is. I will succinctly state this at the end of this post, but I am not a scientist or doctor. Feel free to disagree with my problem and solution statements and provide your own. Just make sure they are one sentence for the problem, and one sentence for the solution. Instead, we are masking a lack of agreement with non-scientific terms like "Ultra-processed food." This is a term, much like "Mediterranean diet" that has no rigorous definition and can therefore be used in consensus statements. The vegans think it means one thing, the carnivores think it means another thing, the keto people think it means another thing, and the calories in - calories out people think it means yet another thing. In the meantime, the food companies are still hanging their hat on what they were specifically told was the problem by (you guessed it) scientists. They were told to "Lower fat, and especially lower saturated fat." The products they make (Which I agree are mostly crap) have seed oil so they are low in saturated fat. And they typically don't have red meat, so they tick that box too. How do you go about regulating food companies if you can't even define what the problem is and get consensus? Why are you so sure that people won't follow healthy guidelines if you can't even state what the guidelines are? Here is the problem and the solution to the biggest health problem in the history of mankind: The cause of metabolic syndrome and type two diabetes (and numerous related diseases) is excessively high average insulin levels over years and decades resulting in insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, and type 2 diabetes. The cure to metabolic syndrome and type two diabetes is lowering average insulin levels which is achieved by, in order of priority, lowering sugar consumption, lowering carbohydrate consumption, and being more physically active. I'm sure I'll get lots of hate for this one ...

Dr. Muecke, you wouldn't be so enthusiastic to change the dietary guidelines if you would imagine the changes of careers needed, how to keep people getting the same level of income. What would people do all day if half of current jobs were eliminated suddenly with a switch to proper low carb & IF diet? If half of the people had to switch to farming, could they be paid as much? Even the printing jobs are related to the mostly carbs dietary guidelines. Marketing & office jobs relating to marketing & medical, repairs, construction, government jobs reliant on the extra tax revenues possible in a mostly carbs economy. You seem unaware of the upheaval that would befall any first or 2nd world country that would suddenly switch the dietary guidelines to truth. Farming can create natural fats and pastured protein only so fast when they're currently set up and skilled in mostly carbs. I did learn this week that I can use the skim milk to fertilize my food garden. The chickens, cats, and geese can only drink so much of it. We never drink/cook with the skim milk. We drink the goat milk raw & whole, but separate some of the cream to make butter, ghee (high heat healthy cooking oil!!!), and to have cream for tea, coffee, sauces, whipped cream. I still have to try making ice cream yet. Need more goats lol. You never hear the elites complaining about goat methane. I've never even heard them fart. The horse farts often. Goat milk is way healthier for people than cow milk. True organic fresh goat milk is even better as formula for babies when mom can't feed baby mother's milk. I predict that dairy goat farming for milk, meat, hides, pet food & skim milk as garden fertilizer too, is going to really take off soon. Nigerian Dwarf has the highest cream content of any dairy goat breed, much more than cows. Sheep can be more cream percentage but they don't make as much reliable milk I think, but they're good for meat and wool and can turn the lawn into people/pet food lol. Goats can turn hay & briars into people/pet food. The government & wealthy elite really can't support pasture farming bcz it can cut out a lot of middlemen, tax revenues and GDP numbers, and cut out investors mostly. Goats are small enough that family/neighbors can do their own processing. Freezing/refrigeration could be optional. They would just have to process more frequently if they didn't have electricity or it was too expensive. We can tolerate more carbs if were much more active and eat our needed calories in less frequent meals. And properly prepare the best quality grains. No GMO, no chemicals. Soak/sprouted grains. This used to be common knowledge how to help grains, rice, seeds, potatoes, corn be more healthy than damaging. We might not need carbs for survival, but they are tasty and nutritious. We don't need a wide variety of flowers or art or music either but it's nice. A bare bones existence is boring even if enough.

Thank you for this informative talk! The question is, how will we keep the foods one typically eats on a low carb diet affordable for the average Australian when Australian farms have been on the decline for many years now? I also always wondered how, when we are surrounded by ocean, there is hardly any affordable seafood on the supermarket shelf from Australian waters. It's all imported from Asia, while, I guess, ours is exported. How come all Australia schools don't have working vegetable gardens and fruit trees as well as perhaps quails, which can provide eggs and meat in smalls spaces? Surely every school with a playground can make room for such things so children can eat from the school grounds rather than tuckshops with addictive processed junk. And a proper kitchen in schools which serves proper home cooked meals (using the vegetables, eggs and meat grown at school) with a lower carb focus? We have to start with our kids. The earlier they are on the sugar, the shorter their lives will be. www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2005/s1449323.htm and 9now.nine.com.au/a-current-affair/aussie-farmers-fear-proposed-nsw-government-restrictions-will-decimate-business/e2f12979-6b10-4ffe-9dfe-d9870329ed74 au.news.yahoo.com/woolworths-shoppers-furious-at-supermarkets-prawns-020348235.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAMAR3sBiuiJViOk7NDRntidJlZ9RBW8kWJDc3pdJBk8QgE8chB0UTg2qwqcld1p1kBus3u6lOjk9znQmtu1CKclnPBV6h75MnqCxwAXCLUZQuh7l0ptnYGcF1QM-0IucAR6MJngrp1P-5v5FeCxY5awQDOQPlOoYsB_Mj2mJIbHl
