Hi Dr berry. I need your advice. Iam following carnivore and my fasting glucose level was 4.3 however c peptide was 0.13nmol/l. Since carnivore my blood suger in constantly normal range. Does this mean I am type 1? I dont take any insulin, my doctor said c peptides being low is caused by carnivore but I think its too low

What I love about Dr. Berry is his folksy or plainspoken manner of articulating concepts, which in the hands of other physicians or researchers, would sound too complicated to be comprehensible. While many of us, who have immersed ourselves in the lectures, books and interviews regarding nutrition, might not see the presentations of other physicians and researchers on this channel as bewildering, for someone who is new to this health space, these other presentation, covering similar topics, maybe hard to follow. Dr. Berry deserves much credit for making all of this more accessible to the layperson. Thank you Dr. Berry.

I'm reversing my diabetes with diet- my cpeptide is 1.48, my insulin is 4.4 but my hba1c was still 6.1... I have added IF to my carnivore diet and my blood sugar levels are much better... I am off victoza,2000 mg of metformin, 50 units of insulin after being diabetic for 25 years

I've been low carb now about 5 years. Before low carb I had annoying skin tags. Like everyone else I thought, hey, you get 'em, others don't. So not true.. I'm in my 60s now and have perfectly clear skin. No tags, only a couple "age spots" that continue to shrink and fade, wrinkles almost none- just kept the ones that make me "interesting".. blahahaaa. . Going low carb is a journey. It took many years to get your body in such sad shape, it will take many years to undo the damage. But, make no mistake about it you do get immediate life saving results the moment you decide to improve your health! The point i want to make is the improvements don't stop, everything keeps getting better. For me it was after a year or so I kept scratching at little patches of skin every now and then and after awhile I realized I was removing old damaged skin. I even had a buddy one day suddenly blurt out, "Hey, your skin looks great. " this did lead to a few awkward moments, but I understood what he meant, I don't look like the usual "weathered" 60 something year old. The transition period can be tough as you reprogram your entire diet, but you can make it very enjoyable, it's worth the effort. I feel a good as I did in my 30s. I was Airborne in my 30s so that's saying a lot, but seriously, I feel that good and do the same things as I did then. 4 mile run, 12 mile ruck, .. my normal workout routine is around 100 burpees, push-ups and squats, once or twice a week with calisthenics and..... ok.. yoga.. mixed in the other days - don't knock yoga.. something else you have to do for years to really excell at and enjoy the extended benefits... love life, live life.. it's so sad seeing the diseased, sick, weak, complaining, miserable peoples these days... don't be one of them! Feeling great everyday... can't be sad.

I have a couple of friends who are type 2 and I share a lot of information with them and they do keto or low carb for a few weeks, quit for a long while and start again. Thank you also for mentioning HS in another video and the possible relationship with insulin resistance, really appreciate it. Low carb and keto has really helped me and I think I need to eliminate some more foods from my keto diet.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's likely the main the reason people are walking around with crazy low vitamin D is prediabetic or diabetic metabolism. It weakens your immune system and makes you more vulnerable to viruses. Getting rid of diabetes basically fixes everything.

Most cost effective way to monitor and control your blood sugar (besides cutting out the carbs & before getting a peptide or hba1c tests), is to get a glucose test kit and test your blood daily. You’ll get a daily picture of how your diet affects your blood sugar. Keeping your glucose < 5.4 will pretty much ensure your HbA1c will be in the right range when you visit the doctor.

Our doc ordered labs for my husband two days ago, he told the nurse put A1c on there since we haven’t had one recently; I said can you add c-peptide to that? He said sure. Got the labs back this morning (our lab is quick!) and now we have a good starting point for him trying keto/ketovore/carnivore (he’s gonna probably ease into it) Thank you for this video!

Went to my doctor (in UK) yesterday and asked her to do a fasting insulin and c-peptide blood test. She said he‘s never heard of these two tests! I told her that after having reversed my diabetes with keto I am now interested in finding out how my insulin resistance is getting better. She said „If your a1c comes back in the normal range then you don‘t have insulin resistance“. Educating your doctor about the keto lifestyle is one thing but where do you start with such a lack of basic understanding?!? I‘ve now also found out that in the UK the National Health Service does indeed not offer a fasting insulin test even for diabetics. Well if you don‘t test you can continue to pretend that the health of the nation isn‘t as dire as it really is! I will now pay privately for the blood tests I need but feel sorry for my fellow metabolically ill citizens who don‘t go through the trouble to educate themselves...
@Pravda_Z
@Pravda_Z 3 года назад
I can understand their concern. For insulin and C-peptide, it has to be spun immediately, pull off plasma/serum, freeze quickly; then send out to a specialty lab for analysis - result within a week or two. And those are expensive tests. For HbA1c or glucose, all labs can put out those results within an hour at minimal cost. So your offer to pay if you insist upon learning those values is the right way to go. BTW, Dr. Barry has stated that blood pressure and abdominal girth can pretty much make the diagnosis so...?

Christa Wild, so true. I work in care & concentrate on holistic approach & keeping my clients not only alive but well too. My last two clients most definitely had problem with their Insulin(both craving sugar in large amounts, having candida & skin issues,etc,...) and suffering great deal with their various ailments. UK doctors are so frustrating with their lack of up to date knowledge, their overmedicating and caring so little esp. when it comes to nutrition, statins, PPI, steroids etc,...

A question Dr Ken Berry, if a low C-peptide indicates a type 1 diabetic, does that automatically mean that the ONLY treatment is insulin? I mean, if they are not drastically low, then maybe reducing carb intake with Keto, or better, zero carb carnivore, then they should, at least at that time, manage with no insulin. This would confirm reports of early T1's being able to go many months with no insulin. T1, not always a case of "no" insulin, just too low for the "recommended" carbohydrate consumption.
@Rockman-4
@Rockman-4 3 года назад
I heard that by going keto or carnivore, T1D patients can reduce the insulin injection as much as to 90%.
@KenDBerryMD

Insulin has many jobs in the human body. When c-peptide (proxy marker for insulin production) is under 0.3-0.4, most will need a small dose of insulin each day

21:32 Did you mean that as an example of a T1 mistakenly treated as a T2? Because T1 going entirely undiagnosed for 10 years is highly unusual. Type 1 diabetes usually kicks in hard and fast, unlike type 2 diabetes, which can go on silently for decades. In adults, the symptoms can take longer to appear, compared to T1 in kids. But we are talking about weeks vs. days, and not about years.

One easy way to check at home without lab work: get a glucometer, few test strips and lancets. Then take your fasting sugar, jot it down, eat a ridiculously high carb brekky like pancakes w syrup and a big glass of juice. Take blood sugar again at 1 hour intervals for 3-4 hours. Jot those down. How soon does that spike come down? Still sky high after 4 hours? You’re in trouble.

@jact8350

I think I remember Dr. Berry say that hard cheeses have almost no sugar (galactose) in them because in the fermentation process the bacteria feed off the sugars. Might want to look it up to confirm...😊 Skim milk has galactose but no fat (satiety) so easier to over eat. Whole milk has the fat and the galactose but is filling even if it has the small amt of sugar.

On today's news (21/10/2020) an article on treatment for diabetes/access to diabetic medication is restricted to area code. So low socio-economic areas have less/dated access to diabetic medication. How sad that these people are not being given information that their diabetes T2 can be reversed or T1 possibly improved and how to do it. How short sighted and cruel by the powers that be.

Thanks for the message. One question I have if I may? I thought insulin goes up in response to rising sugar, yet you suggest that sugar rises as a result of insufficient insulin. If you could please clarify my misunderstanding Doc. Thankyou
@amzjojosalah817

Normaly when sugar enter blood stream insulin is secreted, the higher sugar the more insulin, that's in non diabetic individuals. But if he/she already diabetic the pancreas cannot secret the desired amount of insulin because of prolonged high secretion that was happening in the pre diabetic/early diabetic period, so the blood sugar remains high with all the bad sequences of it.

It’s mostly genetics, can be controlled with exercise and diet but not cured, otherwise you wouldn’t have to go low or no Carbs and remain that way.

Its not! Diabetes is preventable That's the massage here, But if did happen patient should go on with low crab diet and that will prevent them from developing all DM complications like renal failure, poor eye sight, cardiovascular disease and etc.. In other scenario patients still complains of having complication inspite of taking all medication required,exersice, eating no sugar and low fats as they were advised!

And the increase in diabetes can be traced to Trans fat oils and processed foods which were introduced in the 1960s on the faith of one doctor.s selective "study" that was slanted to get the results he wanted.

Long time Keto / Lchf followers r having high Blood sugar issues and very low insulin. Cos The real cause of insulin resistance is dietary fat. We discussed it at length in this article. People with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are told to eat foods that are low in carbohydrates and high in fat and protein simply because they don’t create an immediate need for insulin. But in the hours and days after a meal high in fat and protein, your insulin needs increase significantly, because both fat and protein make insulin less powerful over time” And so many Keto influencers r doing Carb Cycling cos they know w/out carbs body s not functioning yet again they r hiding this knowledge from public cos it s against Keto / Lchf! Why not then teaching ppl balanced diet inc good carbs w/out junk foods? ☹️

Suspended medical license. Does make me see a lot of these online doctors in a different light b/c many have had their licenses revoked or suspended due to multiple complaints and violations but they run around on the internet calling all other physicians "stupid", "liars", "dumb" but meanwhile it was only 2 yrs ago before their license was revoked that they were treating patients with the same regimens. Were you intentionally "lying" to your patients then??

@@aao449 where do you see that he has a suspended medical licence? What was it for? Is it reinstated?

Isn't "low fat dairy" what's left when one skims off the cream that's risen to the top? And isn't galactose just a sugar of the lactose disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose, present in all forms of milk be it whole or skim? I don't quite understand dairy but I recently found a hookup for raw milk and cream. YAY! I'm old enough to remember weekly milkman home deliveries. Those were the good old days...before bHT hormone were injected into cows.

Maybe FBG plus HbA1c with a reflex to C-peptide if elevated? Just a curious aside but I wonder what the levels of C-pep and insulin are in someone with pancreatic cx? I'm thinking that a detailed hx would distinguish between an insulin surge vs. a defect in clearance. No?

Was it a coumadin-based rat poison? I was taught that skin tags were genetic and possibly viral... now I'm learning the truth. What an excellent lecture!!

That eentsy inset of Ken talking is, well...almost useless. I can blow it up to a fuzzy 1" x 1.5" but I wish you were bigger and the Powerpoint were a little smaller to accommodate. Just my humble opinion. Good talk! Oh BTW, HbA1c has been around for awhile. I remember running those at Scripp's in La Jolla as far back as ~1981. Not exactly a new test. It's been around for 40 years now. Thanks!
