Y'know, given that the black star dragon balls are kinda Piccolo's fault, it REALLY would have made sense for him to be on the ship.

Trunks having to be the 'father' of the group - as he is LITERALLY the only adult on that ship - really does tank his character compared to Future Trunks in DBZ. And you're right, Piccolo would have been a WAY better choice.

I would have actually appreciated a "filler" episode where they collect the Earth's dragon balls to try and get the black star balls back to earth, and Shenron explains that the cursed red dragon is beyond him in terms of power, as his wishes are without limitation due to the cost they demand. As such, moving the black star dragon balls is beyond him. It would make very logical sense, and they could re-use that wish to get like, a radar that can track them, or a ship capable of going after them or something.

"A lot of good ideas done badly" is such a perfect way to describe GT. I was actually planning on saying something similar but you summed it up better.

Piccolo would have been great as the 3rd of the main group. Just imagine "Goddamit Goku... first i have to raise gohan, then i help raise goten, and i even help raise pan... NOW i need to raise YOU as well!"

Watching the GT dvd set in English with the Japanese score is so funny too. The English narrator trying his hardest to make everything sounds badass and edgy while the light-hearted Japanese score plays is hilarious to listen to.

I guess that's why Mr. Popo is laughing when Kami confronted him about the skeletons back in episode 31

The dub had 2 funny lines in the first 2 episodes that werent in japanese, and those are when mai says adult goku has a body chisled out of marble, and when bulma yells to gohan that someones calling about goku and he says "Is it a restaurant? Because we get those alot."

"This is a Trunks who has known very little hardship." Cut to Kid Trunks getting the shit beaten out of him by his dad and a pink monster, watching his dad explode and dying alongside the rest of the planet by the time he's eight.

We finally found out why Popo laughed when Kami said he only found 5 bodies

The only thing I reemember about Dragonball GT is the opening, it has lived in my head rent free for well over a decade. Can't wait to revisit the series with Nick and Kaiser!

I still think (later with the leather pants) GT Vegeta has an underrated design. It's cool to see how a domesticated Vegeta would look on earth considering all he ever wore was his alien jumpsuit.

Literally the easiest thing regarding the usage of the dragon balls to recover the black star dragon balls would’ve been to have Shenron go “That wish is beyond my power” akin to a no wishing for no wishes rule.

I feel like Lani's GT Vegeta would've bragged every single day about finally being taller than Kakarot until Super Saiyan 4 where he just gets pissed again.

From the moment I first saw GT, I thought "Why isn't Uub on that ship instead of Trunks?" To this day, I still think that. It's so strange to me that Uub is introduced to immediately be sidelined, when he was primed to be an actual character that accompanies them as Goku's student, effectively.

Watching this whole thing made me think, "Huh, Lani and Scott could do a series of videos where they workship ideas on fixing GT. I'm sure people would be down for that." Like the idea of Piccolo going instead of Trunks already makes it sound so much better!

That "Start Button bit" made me crave GT Bits from y'all.

I feel like the abridged running gag for Pan in GT would’ve been like a mirror of Gohan’s DBZA running gag and be something like “ you’re not an adult”

Honestly the sub plot of Vegeta having a mid life crisis is funny to me. He trying to update his look and look cool and everyone just thinks it’s weird and no one likes his mustache to his anger.

Genuinely the best part about GT is the Japanese opening. Controversial take I know but it’s on par with Cha La Head Cha La for me. It makes me cry every time

Hindsight is 20/20 for the "just wish the black star dragon balls to earth" comment Instead of Pilaf "finding" the blackstar dragonballs ... have him wish on Earth's Bragonballs for the Blackstar ones, so you establish that Earth's are on Cooldown, hence why they HAVE to go on a trip! Seriously, they did that multiple times with the movies! they know how it works! Start the movie with a dumb wish, then the balls can't be used for the easy way out!

Lani's reaction to "It's more than a two parter" sums up the first 16 episodes...

This is Episode 1 and the energy is already so immaculate, I can NOT wait for more episodes of "Kaiser subjects his friend to purgatory"

As someone who never properly watched GT, judging by the intense levels of spiritual pain on these faces, I think "vicariously" is the best way to enjoy it.

The idea of young Goku getting "kidnapped" is a funny premise. I love gags about weak nobody characters trying to hurt or hold hostage super OP characters. There are so many funny ways this kind of situation can go. Either the OP character scares the nobody character with their power, or the OP character casually resists whatever the nobody character tries to do and makes them look dumb, or the OP character doesn't even know that they're supposed to be "in danger" and just have a good day while the nobody character gets more and more annoyed

Pan's name comes from the Japanese word for bread, based on the Portuguese word "Pão". The Japanese pronounce it "Pahn". So I'm pronouncing it Pahn. Especially since we're literally hearing that every episode. I shouldn't need to explain myself-- AGAIN-- but there you go.

"How would you have known that's Vegeta?!" The Widow's Peak. It's iconic, nobody has a widow's peak like Vegeta.

18:00 The thing is, it REALLY is not that hard to come up with a less contrived reason for the show to begin. Any of you in the comments who have ever taken any amount of creative writing courses can do it. Here's one now: Pilaf managed to get his hands on a piece of alien weaponry, thinking he could use it to eliminate Goku once and for all. He catches him by surprise with the beam, but - uh-oh! It's a de-ageing ray. Pilaf is easily dealt with, but the weapon self destructs like the Saiyan pods when Bulma inspects it, so in order to avoid using the precious yearly wish on the dragon balls, and partly because Goku is hungry for adventure anyway, he sets off into space to find the inventor of the ray who might just know how to reverse the process! There. Easy. Now you don't have to retcon anything, and you don't have to insert the completely needless 'Earth is going to explode because... Reasons!'

Respect to Lani for accepting his fate. He will travel back in time to become Mick Foley.

31:17 THANK YOU, someone finally put into words. Seriously though about the background music. I watched GT on Nicktoons as a kid and they used the US OST. It is so barebones from what from I remember. It was a few guitar strums followed by the stinger they used for commercial/ep ends.

Bit by bit, I'm falling INTO THE GRAND TOUR (GRAND TOUR, GRAND TOUR!!!) I realized something funny about Pan the other day. Make her older, swap the brattiness to delinquency, let her actually do stuff that matters, and what do you get? A rough draft for Caulifla.

I like the dichotomy of Lani looking a bit like a casual Rocker with Scott looking like a schoolteacher or an author about to take a trip to the countryside for peace and quiet to write his next book.

The best part about the initial retcon of GT isn't even that another set of Dragon Balls existed and no one mentioned it ever, nor that they should've technically been discovered when Buu destroyed the lookout, but the fact that them being made by the original namekian is impossibile given that King Piccolo only learned about the Dragon Balls' existence due to Pilaf. Seriously, it's like they made a serious effort to find literally the WORST way to introduce this plot device.

So happy you guys are doing this again. I was missing having a new Bento episode every week. Maybe this commentary will finally change the minds of the GT haters who haven't watched the show since 2005.

This series could only be possible with these two having known each other for nearly two decades and it shows. And I fucking love it.

I still remember that they re-released the first 16 episodes as "The Lost Episodes" as if it was some epic thing in the past.

I always knew Pan was like 10-14. But I honestly stopped thinking about age from the first half of episode 1. So I never thought about how old Bula (Bra) was. She was just born, like less than 1-2 years at the very end of Z. So.. it doesn't matter if it's 5 or 10 years after Z, she would be, at most, 10-11 years old. In retrospect, this is insane.

17:38 All that was needed was a scene where they tried to wish for the black star balls to return but Shenlong to say something along the lines of "I can only locate [insert amount here] of them and bring them here" or "I am only powerful enough to bring [insert amount here] of them to earth." With the same thing happening when they ask Porunga. Heck they could even tie the shadow dragons in with this being the wish that releases them with the hero group being off planet when it happens.

Headcannon: The reason they don't try to wish those dragonballs back is because Bulma and Bra wasted the wishes on cosmetics, regretted it and went to namek to get those cosmetics redone and undone before episode 1.

I love the juxtaposition between this and the beginning of the DBZA commentaries where Lani is enjoying the madness and having fun and Kaiser just looks more and more pained with each episode there and here we have the complete opposite. Definitely looking forward to more though especially when they get to the bigger arcs

I think an interesting direction for Trunks would be to give him a bit of ego. Not because he's rich, but because he's heard stories of his future self and thinks he's just destined to be awesome. And over the series he becomes humbled.

*I like GT the way I like the old Dragon Ball manga covers - implied adventures that we never actually see.* Yes, the execution wasn't there in terms of the _actual_ adventures they went on. But *Toriyama's designs* for GT were beautiful - & the general _ethos_ of trying to capture the adventuring vibe and aesthetic of early Dragon Ball was a solid idea.

Canadian here. My opening was the English *almost* version of Dan Dan. "In another time and place, scattered all over space. We've got to find them all. Gotta find the dragon balls!" Nostalgic as hell.
