Dragon fruit crossing P3. Toothpick grafting method.

It has been about a month since I started the dragon fruit crossing experiment. All the seedlings are growing well, but I am impatient. The seedlings are going to be grafted anyway. I want to test how soon I can start to graft them and what is the easy way to do it. I found that the toothpick method is the best one so far and it is easy to do. So far, the grafted seedling seem anchored. I will continue comparing the growth among the grafted vs the transplanted.

Great stuff, only video I’ve found with such young grafts, you inspired me

Just a few more days. First of all, the grafted seedlings are still alive but they need to recover from the operation before taking off. I can see some sign for them to start to grow. I just want to make sure.

So you just made slant cuts on the bottom of the seedlings, makes a small hole on the cut section of the scup and stick them in there?
@xiaoli2142

Yes. I was inpatient and they were growing too slow from seeds, so I was trying to see when is the earliest time to graft them since they need to be grafted anyway, and it worked.

Thank you for another great video. I noticed you 'stuck' the three seedlings away from the Cambium center and I'm surprised they survived and 2 of the three actually continue to grow. I wonder if you have tried 'sticking' one right at the edge of the cambium ring with better results.

Thank you very much for watching the video and commenting. I think a successful grafting does not always rely on the cambium layer. I have a short video showing a grafted scion that was connected to the rootstalk outside the cambium ring. Also the side grafting method that many people use to connect a triangle piece of the scion to the side of the branch is not connecting through the cambium ring either. I did not try to put the seedlings on the cambium ring but I think the success rate could be similar. Also I want to graft more than one scion to each rootstalk to increase the number of seedlings to be screened, so to make them away from each other kind of make more sense.

@@xiaoli2142 The way I understand it, the cambium is the 'main artery', delivering whatever the plant needs, up or down. There are 'veins' from the main artery to the nodes on the sides, that's why the side grafts succeed as well. In all the successful grafts I watched, there was always some connection to the cambium. But since I'm only a 'watcher' at this time and your'e a 'doer', I'll defer to you... Temps are still at 100 degrees here in So.Cal but as soon as the weather improves, I'll attempt to be a 'doer' too. Good luck and please keep us posted with your progress.

@@ronbrown1020 Everything you said is true, the cambium is the main artery, but I think the "veins" can be created anywhere the plant needs and the juice is the blood. The cambium from the seedlings can create a need for the "blood" to flow to them therefore creates a new "vein" to draw blood so they can survive. It is just my "theory". We will see if my guys survive.

@@xiaoli2142 Decided to try one for myself (indoors) and see how it holds... I cannot add photos in "RU-vid comments", so i'll post in Facebook (Grafting Dragon Fruit) under 'Barley Barlevav'. I hope that it's okay that I gave you a 'plug' there. So now I'm a 'doer' too.....

@@ronbrown1020 Great! Eager to see your results. One small detail. In my toothpick method, the stem skin of the scion should be scratched a little to create a direct connection between the scion tissue and the "blood". I found that if you don't scratch the skin, the success rate will be greatly decreased.

What purpose this graft will perform .these plants will take years to produce.There are mature cuttings available everywher then why to waste time in such effort. Please explain and remove my confusion.

This is a hybridization experiment to create new dragon fruit variety. By using Tricia's pollen to pollinate Kathie Von Arun flower, which is self-sterile, I am trying to mix the genes of the two to see if some nice feature would come out from the offspring, such as Tricia's dark red fruit color and beautiful flower and Kathie Von Arun's sweet and fragrant fruit flavor. That is why they have to grow from seeds and seedling grafting is a proved method to get fruit faster.

It doesn't take years when you graft onto mature root stalk.

Is this method really work?
@xiaoli2142
@xiaoli2142 7 месяцев назад
You can watch the follow-ups to see the results. Be sure the following: 1. Use rubbing alcohol for disinfection; 2. Cut the seedling stem diagonally to create a larger contact surface area to encourage flesh-to-flesh connection between the root-stock and the seedling and 3. Do not include any root in the seedlings to be grafted.

@@nareshkumawat2417 Also make sure to use pointy material such as a tooth-pick to create the hole when grafting seedlings. The pointy tooth-pick creates a triangle hole so the stem of the seedling have a better chance to make connection with the root-stock tissue at the bottom of the hole, and also the pointy end makes minimum damage to the root-stock tissue and once the seedling is inside the hole, the tissue can have a chance to expend to fill up the hole again to support the connection to the stem of the seedling. I have a video showing a direct vertical cut at the hole area on an successfully grafted seedling to show that the root-stock tissue had filled up the whole grafting area so the seedling and the root-stock has become one.These are showing that the method works if you do it correctly. Here is the link to the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JA4ws64WHmY.html

@@xiaoli2142 Any changes since you posted this? There is no growth or death on my two seedlings, the one ON cambium and the other OFF cambium are the same. The other few that are still in soil are continuing to grow. I also think I left too much of the stems and should have cut it closer to the leaves. Live and learn...

@@ronbrown1020 Hi Ron, I haven't update on this issue because there are not much changes. The grafted seedlings are still green and strong in touch, so I know they are not dead, but there are not much growth either. I can only see tiny little increase of the center stem but not enough to show on camera. I want to wait until the growth on the seedling stem more sure before I do another update, but they are not dead. I did the experiment comparing putting the seedling right on the cambium ring also, but they still need time to recover from the operation and time to connect to the cambium layer. In general, it is too early to call.
