@handgun559 me too! and if they would want a reason to write it in that's canonical, they could call back to Goku's use of telepathy like in Saiyan Saga
The Icarus too close to the sun & donkey kong jokes were about even. And the censored/uncensored curse words genearlly are funnier towards the audience the jokes are for. With jokes for kids, censored curse words are funny, adults, uncensored.
Its just overall good. BTW Mythology Nerds, whats up whit the Fish granting you a Wish? Is there a Folk Tale about it? I saw a few Jokes about that, but I could never figure out the Origin. Was even in Timon and Pumba the Cartoon...
@@Sunaki1000 There's a Grimm Fairy tale as well as Japanese folklore and a few other cultural tales of it honestly i think humans really just like the idea of a wish granting fish.
Honestly, I did not get this at all since I watched it when it was released and just thought that they were referencing Shrek, but recently I finally put it together that it was supposed to be a Donkey Kong reference.
I feel like Cooler could be canon if they played it like Broly in Super. Freezer is probably the most iconic Villain in all of Dragon Ball that stays a full Villain, so it could be a good segway into Cooler from Freezer, if you have something to differentiate Cooler more from Freezer. That final form is my favourite non Sayain transformation.
i love the subtle dig, that ChiChi isnt "my wife" to him, shes "the beautiful lady who lives in my house"...somewhat ties in with DBSuper's (rather ridiculous) side-joke about Goku not knowing what Kissing is, after seeing Bulma and Vegeta do it...but i just like how Innocent it is-- like he just assumes that Everyone's house has a beautiful lady inside, to pour maple syrup all over food ("i just always assumed she came with the refrigerator or the stove, like when your burger comes with fries" kinda logic)
@@rtyuik7 right? It works past the surface joke. Fantasizing about food shows his pure heart (especially after the not pure hearted Krillin’s dream with Icarus), and not understanding Chi-Chi’s role in his life tracks with how he ended up marrying her in the first place.
Goku spends a lot more time thinking about ChiChi and her feelings (or cooking skills in this case) when she's not on-screen in DBZA than the original, I swear.
Honestly, I think the Icarus reference could've worked if Salza had just said "Flying a bit close to a sun, are we?" without needing to specifically name drop Icarus.
I thought the same! But I do enjoy the Diddy and Donkey jokes since it sort of references that Goku and Gohan are (half-)Saiyans, plus Gohan has a tail in this movie while Goku don't.
yeah for me the thing with that line was that it's a bit long for appearing out of nowhere dropping the “Hello Icarus” helps (also kind of loops back at the end and deals with Salza not knowing Icarus' name)
I also agree. Plus, why would Salza have preexisting knowledge of human Greek mythology (other than there being the obvious potential existence of Space Greek mythology)?
19:08 I love the implication in this line. "I've been called many things, my favourite is Whiskers the wonder cat." He's not giving Goku his true name, just his personal favorite of what others have called him, and I find that hilarious. The delivery is so straight laced, but it's the sort of thing I can see him just... bursting out laughing once Goku leaves.
That one's good, but my favorite is, "Ah, look at you-- wasted and gasping for air... But you don't get to go yet. Once your planet is in ashes... *then, you have my permission to die.*" lmao even if it's a reference it's too badass
I think this one is much better too. The "Icarus" version seems like it would have been forced. Maybe in practice it could have worked, but whenever Kaiser brings it up I feel quite unimpressed by it. I also prefer that he's addressing Gohan, the person, as opposed to Icarus, the animal. One of these is more important than the other.
@@leakyboat224 I'm inclined to agree. There might be some workshopping that could improve it over the pitch (e.g. for a start, "'allo, kid, Icarus; flying too etc. etc."), but even then I'd say the concept feels like it has a little too much going against it in this context, especially weighed against what they ultimately chose.
It's an obvious joke that feels forced from no pressure other than "I have a character that is / is named _______, so I'm compelled to do ______" if they had went with Kaiser's joke it would've been eye roll inducing while the Diddy/Donkey joke isn't GREAT makes more sense with the characters.
Toriyama actually had multiple self inserts that he would use for off panel sections (such as Author's Notes) or just directly adding it into his manga (and sometimes the anime) His most prominent one was Tori-Bot, a robot who is neighbors with Arale Norimaki and is writing a manga that his editor is not very pleased with. Tori-Bot also made several cameos in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and even Dragon Ball Heroes. The most prominent cameo was in Z, where Krillin breaks the fourth wall saying that the artist reused the panels of Gotenks trying to fuse, with Tori-Bot appearing and saying the editor doesn't have to pay him for those pages. However before Tori-Bot, Toriyama's self insert was an anthropomorphic bird who was also struggling to write manga, both due to lack of experience and the fact it's really hard for him to hold a pen, considering it is bigger than he is. So the Toriyama joke has layers upon layers upon even more layers.
Because Lani asked for the calc, here it is: In the original Revenge of Cooler, it takes about 27 or 28 seconds for him to reach the sun. We'll average that to 27.5 seconds. The distance between the Sun and Earth is 92.528 million miles. We'll round that to 92.5 million miles. To cross the distance of 92.5 million miles in 27.5 seconds, the Kamehameha would have to be moving 3425925.92593 miles per second. We will round _that_ to 3425926 miles per second. Divide that by 60, and you get 57098.7666667 miles per hour. Which should translate to about 8.5 times the speed of light. Because of the shorter nature of DBZA, this is significantly faster than 8.5 times light speed. But I provided the math and the base calculations. So someone else can calc the speed of the Kamehameha in DBZA.
If it’s miles per second, mutiplying by 60 would make it miles per minute. You’d have to mutiply by 3600 to get mph. Even then, lightspeed is ~300 million m/s and he’s going about 150 billion meters in about 20 seconds, giving us at least 7.5 billion m/s. He’s going about 25 times lightspeed in Abridged
"You must be ice cold!" "No, that would be my father" The way it is written is kind of a throwaway gag but the way the line is delivered implies at least a strained relationship with King Cold. Man I would kill see Cooler, King Cold and Freeza together in HFIL.
> but the way the line is delivered implies at least a strained relationship with King Cold. I'd believe it, prolly resents his father for his favouritism towards freeza
Yeah, Its great seeing Lani always show up in the comments of a lot of reaction videos. I agree! canadian subs should be for a 2nd+ viewing (I personally don't find the subs to be than funny anyways)
Note for the editor: I love that you're not just cutting in and out of the episode and cutting back to see things again but also cutting in other stuff that some of us might not have seen before for added context. I've never heard that Korin and Yajirobe skit before and it has me absolutely howling. Wonderful work, keep it up.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Chris Guerrero is actually my dream casting for if we ever get Moro animated and dubbed. Like I absolutely read the manga with his voice in my head for that character.
I *still* use '*IMA PLANT ME A DUMBASS TREE*' when I'm talking shit in games. One of your most brilliant lines and one of the best deliveries of the series.
i’ve found myself quoting dbza moments in what could just be playing certain game randomly, like the “he couldn’t quite tolerate my dulcid tones,my choice in venacular!- and my particular method of… ar-tee-cu-la-tion…” while playing mario odyssey in october lol.
@@EWOODJ SUNSABITCHES NEED TO GET OFF THIS TRAIN. How MANY GODDAMN TIMES has t4s won this argument? Lawsuits? etc? They keep shrieking this. they've lost EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. because Team Four Star and DBZA Are STILL FUCKIN HERE. 15 years. FIFTEEN YEARS. GIVE IT THE FUCK UP.
I always felt that the "story of my family" joke was a commentary on writers shoving new characters into someone else's canon with ridiculous backstories delivered in exposition dumps. It's a short movie/fanfic, and they need to make us a) take the character seriously, and b) cut us off from asking "If this character is so awesome and important, why haven't we heard of them before?" Cooler's so damned efficient that he gets all that out of the way in a few seconds, and without bothering viewers who clearly won't care anyway.
Does give the idea of him being a no nonsense guy by giving the clipnotes of his family. I also like to think je knows how his and frieza’s race reproduce
I read someone’s interpretation of the two “Freeza needs to accept his mistakes” and “Because I’m a prick“ scenes with Cooler. One scene is what happened, the other is how one of the brothers remember it, and there’s plenty of evidence for both.
So I never got the Snickers joke, but due to Coolers response I actually thought the real joke was that Goku got Snickers tagline wrong so it still worked.
I think the Icarus joke could have been done by Gohan telling Goku after they get back. “Where is Icarus?” “He flew too close to the sun, dad.” “No! Not my emergency food!”
Ah, I've been binge watching this after the death of Akira Toriyama and I just got to the "Toriyama no! You were taken before your time!" And now I made myself sad.
Like I said in the previous upload, God, I love this movie. Some of my favorite lines/jokes are the “Imma kill it” convo and “IMMA PLANT ME A DUMBASS TREE!”
I love how they re-wrote Cooler. Don't really remember the original that well, but here he seems to be actually respectful of Goku - if only in the sense of recognizing him as a legit threat - and most importantly he's a graceful loser. Even when he's losing his life, he doesn't lose his cool (heh) and finds solace in knowing he's better than Freeza - which is completely true.
The Whiskers the Wonder Cat joke led me to eventually make a Khajit character in Skyrim and name him that. I spent that run doing pure unarmed and heavy armor, so I was running around punching and suplexing people to death. That was a ton of fun and OP as hell.
One thing I loved about the way you guys wrote cooler was the fact that in Anime if you don't see the body, they are alive. Cooler knows this and wants to make sure they are dead as all dead can be
And it ties up well with his brother complex. Freeza was sloppy about erasing the sayians, so Cooler wants to be damn sure he does the job better than his little brother.
I always liked the "and that's the story of my family" line. I knew immediately what had happened and thought it was great. Also, thank you for correcting "him and I"
29:35 glad you were the first to make the reference that, Piccolo has so many abilities that he forgets about some of them at times. It went Full Circle in the DBS Super Hero Movie, When Krillin had to remind him that, he has the ability to go Giant Form.
Zoro's name was actually "Zoro" in the Viz manga when they began printing it, but once the 4Kids dub of the anime came out Viz changed it to "Zolo" for consistency. There were only four volumes out by this time, so they went back for the newer printings and changed his name to "Zolo." When the 4Kids dub was cancelled and Funimation began working on their dub, Viz was already 14 volumes in. By the time "Zoro" was used in Funimation's uncut dub, the English manga by Viz was already 17 volumes in which leads me to believe at this point they've just stuck with "Zolo" for consistency ever since.
Except all the fans would not care if they changed it back, and in fact the longer they go without doing it the worse it gets. And they ruined plenty of other names too. Blackbeard is "Teech" instead of Teach.
@@markdisalvi1487 They actually fixed some of the names of the Blackbeard pirates in their most recent appearance. Like getting the horse's name correct as "Stronger". Probably got away with it because he'd only been name dropped once twentyh years ago.
You're 100% right. I think though the only reason why Viz never changed back to Zoro in recent times is because it would supposedly be too expensive to reprint millions of copies of near 100 volumes for one name change. Or they're just too lazy to do it.
Trademark and copyright wise Coola, is a lime flavoured cordial in Australia... its the companies No1 selling flavour since 1960s. They maliciously defended it and the recipe is now owned by one of those big brand conglomerates Asashi Breweries
When he cut off Catherine zetas clothes made me feel funny in my pants for the first time. It was such a relief as my progressive parents really wanted me to be gay to show off to to their high society friends but all I wanted was to touch boobles
When you guys got to the part about Nu Metal in the English dub, it prompted me to mention something. Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan movie features a band called Haji's Kitchen singing a couple of songs most notably Day After Day during the scene Broly no sells Goku's Kamehameha. The singer of that band was a dear mate of mine, Vince Mullins, he passed away a few years ago and I love to pass his memory on in moments like this to people who will forever get to hear his voice through my favourite DBZ movie.
@@RetroIsaac thanks man, he was a lovely dude, made a massive impact on me as a young musician, the guy's voice was on another level. Kinda sucks he never got to see the new Broly movie. I feel like I should have posted this when they get to Movie 8 but the topic came up and I couldn't resist.
Also had his other band “Gravity Pool” featured. They’re song “Reach” plays just after Brolys transformation. One of my favourite songs and scenes in the entire film. Vince had one hell of a voice.
@@pato5226 not many people know that man and fuck it makes me happy to know you do. He was a beautiful soul and I know he'd be thrilled with the appreciation ❤️🔥
the fact they had too just as much when half the cast did work for funimation, and still was considered a strike, is just shiz, but its youtubes ridiculous content flagger, honestly akira toriyama would totes love the parody, so would Toyotarou, seeing as he started with fan made mangas lol but now that toriyamas son is taking over he seems to understand his fathers forgetfullness
I hate how I have had to explain that joke 4 times in my life, and now anytime the people I've told the joke to predicts something, WE ALL QUOTE IT. Other day, I was experiencing dejon mustard, and I realized what was happening and my mom was ordering food, and I predicted pizza from a place outta town we love, and I said, "ooh ordering Dave's?" She said yea, and, you all know the line.
Fun fact: for TMNT2 secrets of the ooze, the studio decided to bend to whims of parents saying the first TMNT was too violent so all their weapons were glued into position. They don’t use any of said weapons during the movie. We did get combat cold cuts though….so that’s a thing.
I just realised something. The fact that Goku is surpriced to see Cooler, someone who's Ki is on paralell with Frieza, implies that Cooler can control his Ki-levels and was able to hide it when arriving on earth.
The French guy Salsa line “ Is that the legendary SUPER SWINE” is the funniest line in all of the DBZA Movies, and I use to say it randomly throughout the day
I was exposed to DBZ through DBZA too! There were just too many episodes to sit down and “give it a shot” but watching these made me want to check out the original stuff
Exactly lmao my first experience with actually watching anime was my wife getting me to watch abridged series like yugioh then dbza and hellsing. I like both abridged and original now because of it.
Broke: Watching DBZA before you watch the real DBZ. Woke: Watching all of DBZ just so you can watch DBZA. Bespoke: Watching DBZA and NEVER watching the real DBZ.
The tail thing makes sense to me. Saiyan tails can grow back if the wound isn't cauterized, it happens to Goku and Gohan. Maybe his tail grew back during the timeskip after namek and he decided to keep it for a few months because he was nostaligic.
I find myself saying “I’mma plant me a dumbass tree!” anytime a video game allows me to slam an enemy into the ground. EDIT: I’ll also have you guys know that I was about to say that I preferred “Hello Donkey! Where’s Diddy?”, but the moment Lani said “Nobody played Kid Icarus”, I made the quickest switch-up right then and there.
"And that's the history of my family" got me so abrubtly and hard first time I watched it, I just had to comment when I saw yall questioning it, it was so funny to me
Bit of trivia: The actual speeder bike chase is unscored. The music here is the orchestral version of the piece "The Forest Battle". It plays in the movie where Chewbacca and the Ewoks clean house in the big battle, but was re-orchestrated for concert suites. You may remember the finale of the piece used in the Episode 2 trailer.
The hilarious thing about the "Bulma Enchanto" thing is that it's like that IN THE VIDEOGAME ONLY, in the movie when she introduces herself to Goku, she does say "Bulma Briefs". Same thing for Chichi, in the movie her last name is never stated, it's the videogame that gives her the "McRoberts" last name
Also, the Diddy Donkey joke is DEFINITELY better than the Icarus one, for one simple reason. If cooler is anything like freezer, he MUST have called the Saiyans monkeys a lot
I loved the “and that is the history of my family bit” tbh. I know it’s hit or miss for a lot of people but it’s funny that he just lore dumped in the middle of a fight
Cooler is one of my favorite movie villians. He has a few subtle differences from Freeza and it does create some interesting concepts for Freeza’s family tree. Him seeing Freeza as a petulent child. No one looked down on Freeza like that. And Cooler making certain that Goku is dead by sending his mean to scorch the forest showed his agency and how he handles business. The whole thing of him cleaning up Freeza’s mess And his end realizing that it was his mistake as well.
Honestly it's hilarious and it bugs me they didn't address how they arrived at something so off topic and random ("Avon calling" being a reference to the door to door sales campaign by cosmetics company Avon) and yet so seamlessly integrable to the scene.
I think it illustrates the difference between the brothers really well, even if it's unintentional. (And it is definitely unintentional.) Cooler is trying to push past his limits and finds the fifth form, possibly the actual second form for his species (since Frieza's fourth form is actually his base form, with the others being power limiters). While Frieza is so preoccupied with Goku that he ends up creating a new form that, while stronger, is just a copy of Super Saiyan that doesn't even do him much good. Maybe if Frieza had unlocked fifth form, his natural talent could've made it stronger than the Saiyan gods!
"This form's so much more powerful! It's BLUE! And it's almost as powerful as the other one, which is RED, but it can actually be sustained." At least the gold Super Saiyan transformations follow a decent pattern. SSJ1: bulked up a bit, everything goes golden, spiky, and angry. SSJ1a: bulked up a bit more, but slower. SSJ1b: bulked up beyond reason, functionally immobile. SSj2: significant boost in speed and power, eyes get more narrow, hair gets swept back somewhat, lightning in the aura. SSj3: another big speed and power boost, hair really long, eyebrows gone, eyes even more narrow, the lightning might as well be a shawl. They're all distinct and memorable, even if 2 essentially becomes the baseline transformation for those who have it.
"Somebody better pick up that phone..." is another line that lives deep in my psyche. Also, isn't it called "Cooler's Revenge" because he's getting revenge for Goku killing his brother?
Also, I love how the ending of this movie cannonically stablishes that indeed all those enrgy beans just randomly drift throuhg space until some unfortunate star happens to cross it's path
I love the “You must be Ice Cold” “No, that would be my father” bit. It works so well within the context of the show! We never got King Cold’s first name, and “ice” keeps up the cold puns for Frieza’s race. As far as I’m concerned, “Ice” is absolutely King Cold’s first name.
@@Gab8riel yea toriyama decided in the dragon ball universe that last names are barely a thing if at all (probably cause he didnt want to think of any lol) so its likely his name is just Cold for that same vegeta reason you gave
@@2-bit567 Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure that 'Briefs' was originally Dr.Briefs' given name, not his Surname. Then everyone started calling Bulma 'Bulma Briefs' and it just kinda stuck. I'm pretty sure that's the case, but it was in a RU-vid video I watched a long time ago, so I could be wrong 😂
Every time Kaiser talks about what he'd do differently in the editing, I just keep imagining DBZA "special edition: with a bunch of unnecessary lens flares and Dewbacks added to the background.
I’ve honestly always felt that Cooler’s first movie is the closest you could get to making canon because it can be slotted in to the three year time skip during the Android Saga. I know it’s ultimately not canon I’m just saying it’s the one that would mess up continuity the least in my eyes. I’ll always love your “Yeah but his was smaller!” “KNEW IT! HA!” joke! One of your best to me! That had me on the floor the first time I heard it!
Bojack has the most canonable movie. Just ignore that 18 isn't attending this super prize tournament, but my read on that is that she only starts getting money focused to get their family out of kame house
@@MegaHerpthederp I don’t think it could. In Dead Zone Bulma, Roshi and Krillin already know about Gohan, whom they didn’t find out about until the beginning of DBZ, then Raditz shows up and events are set into motion from there. There’s no break in between Gohan meeting his dad’s old friends and being abducted by his uncle. This is why the Garlic Jr Saga is considered non-canon by the fans, well that and the fact it doesn’t happen in the manga.
couldn't Wrath of the Dragon also fit in the canon timeline? The only discrepancy is that it's implied Future Trunks' sword was given to him by Tapion, but it's not outright stated, so that can be ignored.
I know it'd be a coding nightmare, but I'd love in the next Xenoverse game if they could add multiple transformations for the Frieza race, so you can do the different forms like Frieze in Namek, and then you could unlock Cooler's final form and also the golden and black forms. Because, like you guys said, Cooler's final form is fantastic, and memorable.
I swear, there are times in DBZA that I wonder if Mr. Popo was the original God of Destruction. The fact that Popo can bring back a destroyed sun kind of reinforces that thought.
@@imveryangryitsnotbutter Alright then, a different argument: Popo's powers are that of Meme (a power that Saitama's powers are often mistaken for). Beerus's powers are that of Destruction. Popo is thus naturally more powerful, likely to be around the same level as the Grand Priest at minimum, and beyond Zeno at maximum.
Head-canon: Mr. Popo is a retired Zeno. He abdicated, then went to live the rest of existence on some quiet, backwater planet in the middle of nowhere just chilling, getting wasted, and hanging out.
I know they talk about how you should watch DBZ before DBZA but honestly DBZA and the voices are what I think of whenever I see any Dragonball imagery, Martin's Frieza is the iconic voice for me.
That whole sub-plot with Korin and Yajirobe throughout the show is probably my next-favorite thing about DBZA behind the refreshing portrayals of Dende, Popo and Cell. Healthy romance never fails to pull at my heartstrings.
