Would've messed Jiren up, that's for sure. Edit: Okay, full disclosure...I didn't watch most of Super. I'm proud to know that there was one non-beam technique that gets brought back though.
I still like the mahogany bit. I never saw it as a "lol random" kind of joke, I thought it very much illustrated the character it was coming from. He's supposed to be this grand imposing figure, but he really just works a lame desk job, so he takes great pride in the quality of his desk even though it's not at all impressive in the afterlife, where the laws of time and space are thrown out the window. Then at the end he reveals that it's made from fire-breathing space trees and has magical properties, which IS pretty cool... except that he then again places his emphasis on the mundane aspects of it, because that's what he thinks is impressive.
It’s also bizarrely something I could see a real life person doing. Like, we all probably know a guy who emphasizes these mundane things they find impressive, and latch on to a specific word while doing it.
It was because of that line, all those years ago, that I still make all my furniture in Terarria out of mahogany, and now that I work in the wood industry IRL, whenever a project comes along that needs mahogany, I utter the line much to the confusion of my co-workers lol.
I wish I watched DBZA as ot was being released Then I would've known why half the World was saying "mahogany " and then me talking about mundane aspects of wood, because that is what I think is impressive
True story, I was at a summer camp hanging out with this one guy that I barely knew in 2008. Thought he was a total jock who only cared about sports, etc. When we were talking about swords and canes, I mentioned that one of my canes was made of Mahogany. At the same time, we both went "Mmmmmmahogany". Instantly, we both knew. Still friends to this day.
Completely unrelated but one of my bestfriends was a new student at the school in like 6th grade, nd he was like 5'10 200 back then 😂 so at lunch he just sat by himself throwing twisted ketchup packets at people nd i was th only one who threw one back, so when we go to class he sat next to me nd was like I f* witchu lol
It’s interesting they mention referring to the gag TWICE am I missing something…aside from namek and piccolo asking…when was the other time they mentioned it?
@@TheUltimateRare sadly some of the BEST are ones that you “aren’t allowed” to make anymore cos somewhere out there someone MIGHT get offended Me personal fave is krillin seeing Frieza and the Freaky Alien Genotype…😂😂😂
9:44 Gonna defend past TFS here. Headbutt CAN be super effective if the pokemon using it has the abilities Refrigerate, Galanize, Pixalate, or Aerilate. Most likely, this particular Gohan has Aerilate, its hidden ability, making Headbutt super effect against Raditz, who is clearly a grass type since we see Nappa plant some more later.
@@SilverHairedFreak25 you're right. Grass/Fighting, hit by a flying type move? No wonder it did so much damage even though Gohan was such a lower level.
Fun fact: Chris Rager (funimation voice of Mr Satan and King yamma) once made a tfs reference when describing king Yamma in a dbz featurette; "He likes mahogany desks."
For those who are curious like I was, the voice of Chi Chi in episode 3 was KrisRix who voiced Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and some other characters in Sailor Moon Abridged. Her old RU-vid is up but the most recent video was uploaded 11 years ago
Also for those who don't know, DBZA voice of Bulma (and person who is still doing a whole bunch of cool stuff to this day), Megami33 was the voice of Sailor Moon in SMA and they were uploaded to her channel before they were all taken down. (Thankfully a few of the episodes were re-uploaded by other people, but now that I look it's hard to find most of the episodes)
@@tsrenis Huh, come to think of it, I can't remember, did Jesse play anyone in DBZA? I can't remember any of his TFS Abridged characters other than Seras Victoria
@@Vegas242 i _think_ he might've voiced a background character in the Future Trunks special? i can't remember for sure, but i think Kaiser brought that up when he did an episode breakdown for it.
@@Ansible1000 she's *Bulma, princess of capsule Corp, where they fit entire buildings or spaceships in a container the size of a pocket watch. so BS anime logic :D
You don't get better at things unless you're your own worst critic. I get that someone likely taught you the same thing and it might have even helped, but did you succeed in life like he did? Maybe self love isn't mental health.
Honestly - it's almost amazing that they didn't keep it as Makankosappo in German, since other Japanese attack names were kept as well. Höllenspirale sounds metal as fuck though.
Of course the German dub did something like that. It’d be weird if they DIDN’T make it sound more vicious. Given their strict censorship laws on the subject, I’m more curious how they handled the Hitler ersatz in the Buu era. XD
I still adore the entirety of the "Chargin my attack" gag.... and i still quote the Mahogany joke whenever i see the word or something made of it anywhere.
Fun Fact: In the manga (I’d assume the anime has this line too) Raditz specifically says the reason he can’t move at all when Goku is holding him is because of the damage from Gohan’s attack!
Gohan: I have an attack that might work but I take me a long time to charge Piccolo: ok Gohan: you got to hold him like you you did with goku and raditz, but considering how strong he is … never mind you got this Piccolo: Are you holding a grudge
I've wanted, if Buu Saga ever happens- even as a Kai edit, for Goku with the Spirit Bomb singing Charging My Attack as Vegeta fights KidBuu. Then, Mr Satan and EVERYONE on Earth start singing along. As the spirit bomb gets bigger, the orchestra slowly kicks in and the "dodo do dodo" starts syncing with the DBZ intro theme.
he means classic headbutt. before everything changed. and to be fair, when the episode was released, there was no way to make it super effective IIRC..
@@darby2314 to be fair most ability based changes that gave moves special changes didn't really exist back then. which is the whole point since only things that exist when the video was first MADE matter here. so that's why i make the comment.
I feel like the mahogany joke lands as well as it does between being just the right kind of non-sequitur and a bit of the Sideshow Bob Rake effect. Like I don't think it ever actually hit "Now it's not funny" but the amount of repetition on it just makes it hit real damn well and it was already just a funny voice and read for a silly subject.
It especially hit well with me because a girl my partner went to law school with would just never shut up about how amazing her father's (who works at giant law firm X) mahogany desk was. And did you know her father works at giant law firm X? And his desk is mahogany?? Like, the joke perfectly tapped into some weird zeitgeist that actually exists for some people.
My favorite thing about the Mahogany bit is that Trunks references it in Episode 60 when Shenron brings him back to life. When I first heard Kaiser deliver that line, I burst out laughing so hard.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z95fi3uazYA.htmlm09s I also want to point out that there's another reference immediately after when Trunks says, "Oh good, I've got my clothes back" (of course in reference to the scene where Vegeta didn't get to keep his clothes after he died in Namek and when it's confirmed later as we see King Yemma react to Recoome)
Mahogany is funny because a giant horned man in a suit with The Macho Man's voice is talking about his interior design. You'd never expect Randall Savage to discuss those things, but I bet he would.
Very good explanation. I knew there was more to it than just "random humor" but I didn't have the words for it. btw is Randall Savage the fusion of Macho Man Randy Savage and the Batman villain Vandal Savage? That must be who the strongest mortal is
I love how the thumbnail for these commentaries looks like the following exchange: Scott: "Why are you making me do these, Nick?" Nick: "Because seeing you suffer is hilarious."
The Yoshi joke, from everyone I know who loves DBZA (and I know a LOT of them) is consistently one of the most beloved and referenced jokes. It helps that it's so early into the series, but it's furthered by the fact that it's just downright fucking funny.
Yeah I've never met anyone... until just now that is... that thought that joke was funny. It was largely just a "oh that's a reference" moment for most of the folks I know.
@@fidelgarcia2224 you’d think that designs would remain in the system, but just cost a bit extra to back order since they would be a “one off” printing, but still available…
As a kid, the yoshi thing had me on the floor for the whole day. My mom was so worried, wondering why I was giggling so much at the table. God I love this abridged series.
I hope in the next commentary there's a bit more discussion about how you guys came up with Abridged Popo's personality, that's something i'm really curious about the conceptualization process for.
In case they don’t talk abt it, they’ve said before it stemmed from a filler scene in the Buu Arc where Popo defends himself pretty well against SSJ Goten & Trunks. That made them and others go “what if Popo is secretly crazy strong and just chooses not to show it...?” I dunno if there’s more to it than that or if they just took that idea to the extreme but yeah. Also he has a creepy design so it kinda fits
Specifically, they realized, if Popo did have that power, he'd have to be a monster to not have intervened all of the times the Earth was in danger. So they made him a monster and then some.
@@davisbowe8668 Abridged Popo is beyond the strength of Mr. Popo; don't forget him doing stuff like throwing Goku and Vegeta off the lookout, turning the sun back on, apparently being in charge of the rules for shenron, calling that krillin was gonna die in season 2 and eliminating garlic jr with zero effort. while the canon popo def has a power ceiling, Lord Popo does not
Oh my gosh, I legit never realized Gohan’s “actually that looks more like a platEEEEEEAAAAAUUUUUU!” was done first before Vegeta did the same thing with Freeza at the end of season 2.
Look fellas, your early mistakes paved the way for your future successes. Your later seasons were nothing but pure quality gold, and honestly your early stuff suited the early era of youtube well. I will be eternally grateful for the love and hard work you put into this series. I am absolutely loving every second of the HFIL content, as well as the other DBShortz you do.
You know, there was a lot of hype back when DBZA first launched. There were lots of abridged projects already but TFS was like this big project and people were hyping it up and crap. And I remember when I first watched it my first thought was holy shit this is very well produced compared to other abridged series. I think even these humble beginnings were huge steps way back when. And you guys improved A LOT with the times, which just makes it even better.
I think the reason it was so big was cause one it was Dragon Ball and 2 many of them as they said in the first video had already worked on different abridged series that were already well liked so them coming together to make one was what made the hype real. Also having LK be the narrator was amazing too
One of the biggest joys of DBZ:A WAS watching the Abridged creators come together to actively get better over the series. It’s ABSOLUTELY worth the investment.
I remember loving the Yoshi joke when I saw it. A good chunk of it is just how sincere Masako is when delivering his lines. His Goku shines the most when he's just a sincere doofus.
@@GrimmShane Seriously, can someone grab us a time machine so we can go back and replace Special Beam Cannon with Hell Spiral as the name we use instead? That's hardcore. Also totally fits with Piccolo's style, right alongside the Hellzone Grenade.
Thanks guys! Been a huge fan with my old friends in high school when we were 14 in 2008. I remember coming home from school and watching these with my friends Robbie and Brandon, and how bummed out my buddy Brandon was that Nappa died (he didn't see the original DBZ). Was a great gateway to get them both into the genre of anime. Fun to rewatch these with you.
I remember laughing hysterically when I first heard the 'Makankosappo' joke, because I remember reading it in a gaming/magazine in the late 90s that referenced it and having no earthly idea how to pronounce it. So that joke was PERFECT!
Where scouter come from Kaiser?! On another note: I've been watching you guys for a very long time, and you've never failed to make me smile and laugh. You genuinely improve people's lives with what you create, and I hope it brings joy to your lives making it.
6:19 I always figured TFS Goku was more like The HomeStar Runner. An airhead good intentioned goofball, whose actions cause everyone else grief, even though he honestly means no malice. Also He's a Terrific Athlete☆
The mahogany joke was only okay until suddenly the trees start breathing fire and then suddenly I started cracking up. It never fails to get me even to this day.
The "Are you a Yoshi" "Can I Ride You?" Lines are what hooked me to the show, I was the biggest fan from that point on. It physically annoys me how critical you are of the product in the early days. You guys released this during peak golden age RU-vid before ads took over and everyone became "professionals". In a land of Fred videos and Charlie Bit my finger type videos you guys were kings.
Interesting discussion about Spiral vs. Special. The Danish name of the attack is "Light Spiral". It's one of the only times they ever translate an attack name, post-Radits.
Whenever my brother and I hear the word "mahogany" we will immediately start quoting that scene. We sometimes quote it for no reason too. This show shaped my teenage years, man.
Headbutt actually can be supereffective under the effects of "Pixellate" which turns it into a fairy type move and boosts its power xD Which even makes sense, because Radditz is a Fighting/Grass type x)
My gf at the time, ex now, introduced me to DBZA. Even though we broke up I binged the series until I got to the android saga area. Once I was caught up I waited by for the other episodes. Gotta say this rewatch is a blast from the past.
I always thought that the “headbutt” being super effective was another joke on how week Raditz was 😂 because he was hurt that badly by a normal type move.
I had thought that Gohan's Pokemon headbutt was meant to be a good joke about Raditz being so weak that even a Normal-type move was super effective against him.
So glad I stumbled across these videos, been watching back when season 1 was new. Ive shown dbza to friends that have never seen dbz and They all absolutely fell in love with this show. Great work, wish there was more but am glad for what there is!!!
No matter how much time and effort goes into the extensive research required, the greatest minds of our generation STILL cannot find out where that scouter came from.
Guys!! Me and my friends still say NERD!!! When someone goes into fine detail about nearly anything science. 😂😂😂😂 14 yrs strong! Don't stop doing the fantastic work yall do!
The sad thing is, I know it won't happen but I'm watching with the hope that the send off when they finish the entire series commentary is that they're coming back for the Buu saga. Love you TFS. T__T💗💗💗💗
It's so interesting how the quality of the abridged series started and how it ended. Much like gohan, started off with it being weak but with potential and it ended it with you guys achieving super saiyan 2. Be proud of the cringe, it certainly made me laugh lol Mahogany
I don't think the scouter was a problem. She just put it on really quickly (and took off her robe) while Krillin was talking. She practiced it so she could look cool.
I also love around @11:00 when they were talking about how the scouter would deafen people by how loud it was because everyone could hear it even though the saiyans have constantly blown people and mountains up, even planets with their explosive power but yeah the head phones are what would cause them to lose hearing.
Every episode was a masterpiece..I understand that you guys have things about it that might make you unhappy or “cringe” but given what you had to work with, the time period of comic relief, and all that, it was epic..as a fan that has followed you since the very first episode of abridged, I still watch the whole series through..All 3 seasons..love them all..no matter how many times I watch them..I really hope that one day you can bring it back to do the buu saga..I know a lot of fans would enjoy it..thank you for everything
I have to say that the entire DBZA series has defined a lot of my humour and some of my phrases. I still quote multiple lines and the best part of that is when someone else gets it. You have transcended multiple walks of life for people to bond over. And I thank you.
The first few episode have some awkward moments that didn't age as well but none of those episode were bad imo. The quality of the show improved amazingly fast.
Guys, guys none of us see any of the problems you do, this shit was 100% perfect (at least to me) the improvements you made over the series as it went were amazing, but it in no way takes away from just how good these episodes were. When i rewatch the series I enjoy these episodes just as much as the later ones!! What you guys made was absolutely amazing, thank you!!!
