@@andymerrett I despise that about TV programs the first 5 minutes recaps last episodes 25 minute run time I won't watch live TV anymore because it agitates me I'm being watching I don't need to be reminded, might aswell watch the recaps and only waste 25 minutes for a season
michelin man said that his brand was green and then the dragon countered that a single server system would be far greener for roughly 50 users. for some reason michelin man didn't counter that by saying that they also have green servers and instead tried to do the math on using 7 monitors on one of his crappy desktop computers and still came up short in energy and obviously it's going to be like 10x-20x more expensive.
It wasn't necessary. The business value was already torn to shreds. Peter debunked his idea. The thing that really set them off was the guy telling them what he had was worth $5m and he had no way to back that up.
The way Duncan built up his hopes, not realising he was talking to the other Peter, and then smashed his dreams to pieces with "I've never heard so much rubbish in my life, I'm out" was spectacularly brutal lol I can imagine he had more than one whisky when he got back to his hotel room
I think you mean an arse for a face as OP said. A face for an arse would be something completely different, especially when presented with the scenario of sitting down to use the toilet
5:05 Peter Jones was talking about connecting terminals using RS232 serial connections (lol! - no good for a GUI), which shows that he is well out of touch but was just blagging his technical knowledge to override Peter Hopton (which Duncan Bannatyne agreed with, as he knows fuck all about computers and evidently could not come up with any other reason to say that he was out too). Theo Whatshisname makes a much more valid point shortly afterwards.
The bones of what he's saying are right though. I mean, if you were that bothered about power consumption you'd just go fully thin-client using something like Citrix.
Yeah, Peter Jones knows everything about everything, and if you have a tech business, don't you dare presume to know more than him! The Very PC pitch was poor, but Peter Jones and that guy who runs Viglen for Alan Sugar are possessed of the same tendency that makes them want to show off their expertise and in the process disprove they have any.
Jason Gomez He waa just making a point that it's technically possible. The whole argument was unnecessary because how much power would a switch actually draw? Barely any.
He was very. If the guy had come over as an arrogant arsehole, then I would have said he deserved that, but he didn't. I bet he imagined it turning out slightly differently; DEBORAH: 'Let me tell you where I am. I like it.' DUNCAN: 'It's ridiculous and ludicrous that no-one has invested in you before now.' THEO: 'There's nothing I would like more than to invest a quarter of a million pounds of my children's inheritance in this- and Mrs P would agree with me.' PETER: 'I'm a gambling man, so I'm going to take a punt.' JAMES: 'Why don't we all throw in £50K and make this happen?!'
Duncan. There is something about that man. He just radiates power and know-how. He's one of those people that you just instantly, on first sight, has gotten enormous respect for. Love Theo as well, he's got great manners and knowledge, still you just wish to be his friend. I love all the dragons. Very impressive people.
The problem was the high valuation resulting from a low equity and profit combination (thus valuation). It would have taken them forever to get their money back and make any profit. James Caan mentioned this.
"You were honest? So you told them this is an averagely crap business and there's no point in investing" Amazing, probably the most brilliant way of saying "I'm out" that's ever been done on the show
10:15 This actually made me chuckle. The uploader just though "screw this, no ones going to want to listen to anymore of this guy" and just cuts the video right in the middle of the guys rant. :p
RS232 terminals? In the vmware era? Server with hundreds of RS ports and cables stretched across the building? Peter, 1990's called, they want you back.
SalemKid Right...Peter Jones knows about RS232 and I doubt he's done too badly with the ladies. Pussies that use the internet to anonymously insult people probably don't do so well though.
If anyone is confused about what his company does it is building pcs from parts that you can get in a computer shop. He uses the least power consuming parts from each manufacturer to build his own pcs. The problem is that the pcs are slower and more expensive as they have to be built by hand. As for the software programmed into the machine, if it actually exists, it's basically forcing Power/Battery Saving mode as the default setting rather than Performance. There are a lot of videos online of people building their own pc like him. It's just that he uses the worst parts from every manufacturer instead of the best parts from every manufacturer and is trying to make money out of it rather than do it as a hobby.
As a PC tech myself he was insulting their intelligence by trying to use PC jargon to mislead them into believing it was something special, much less 5 million pounds. Further prodding had him revealing that it was no better than buying the parts off the shelf, putting it together and turning on the power saving feature, in fact it was MORE EXPENSIVE! I'll tell you it feels really good to see this guy get roasted, trying to pull off a stunt like that.
"What's proprietary in your PC?" What the fuck, Theo. Not many PC manufacturers use proprietary parts. You could be asking Alienware or HP that same question.
Except AW or HP don't claim to have a fraction of the power consumption using exactly the same parts. Unless the guy had proprietary core components (impossible in today's market) his claims could not be true. Theo only exposed this blatant lie.
+dacorpsemak3r Lots of manufacturers probably do claim that. There are several modesl which use a fraction of the power compared to other models. Any machine with an Atom CPU and other less power hungry parts could said to be green. Cause they do use a lot less power than other machines.
BenRangel Sure Atoms use less power, but they deliver correspondingly worse performance as well. The guy claimed that his computers deliver similar performance, but with lower power consumption, which was simply not true.
"Some PCs use as much as 200W" says the guy being watched on a RU-vid video on a PC with a 1000W power supply. I guess I am at the root of the problem here
Just because you have a 1000w PSU doesn't mean it draws that amount constantly. It means it can deliver that amount if your components demand it say in a heavy GPU and CPU load exercise like certain games. What matters is the efficiency of the power supply.
+ManicMindTrick Of course, I meant my comment to be ironic, but to be more specific: Average draw is around 300W. Max draw I've seen is 890w. 80+ platinum efficiency, so I assume that it's pretty efficient. But to be fair, this was uploaded 2008 so the technology is a little dated in the fast evolving industry.
+Janoy Cresva I highly doubt that anything more than the power supply was this man's design, if that. It is, and was, possible to make a low powered computer using power efficient parts that still proforms as well as it's more power hungry competitors. I haven't seen the whole presentation, but I assume this is no more than your average off-the-shelf rig with more power efficient parts sold at a premium. I have built such computers for people before.
The background song playing during the "technological battle of wits" would also be my choice of background song for a striptease performed by the very pc guy.
Narrator [cue edgy music]: "As the canny young entrepreneur shakes his booty and twirls his leggings around, a dramatic intervention from Duncan Bannatyne as the multi-millionaire tycoon throws a £50.00 note into the hat, upping Peter Jones' offer and sending a shock wave through the den. Will Deborah Meaden follow suit?"
All you need to understand is a valuation of 5 million for a company that made a net profit of 24k. Even if you believe his projections of 100k net profit the following year, you'll have ploughed in 250k and got 5k back. At that rate it would take 50 years to break even on investment. The pitcher either thinks they are incredibly stupid, or he hasn't considered his pitch at all.
Is that true? There was a report in the Mirror (for what that's worth - not very much I know) of a £1.5M turnover back in 2009, which gives no indication of profit except that surely it must be significantly lower.
That's what male pattern baldness does for you, it makes you look 20 years older than you are. He should shave his head completely, it makes a big difference.
Yeah on average for a gaming PC Id say most people use 500-750 watt. Im using 1000 watt myself. Its definitely increased as hardware has gotten more powerful.
Ali Abbas cheaper and fucking stupid. That's like saying commodore 64s are cheaper than IBM's Power 8, so it's a good idea to build a server out of commodore 64s. RS232 is still used but it's certainly not as widespread anymore, because of things like Ethernet
@6:53 Peter's face is exactly like mine. Theo's question is dead on -- it's off the shelf parts, anyone can build that gear themselves. His parroting about being a revolutionary is a farce. Not to mention that a few years later the Raspberry Pi came out...
The complete opposite. The technology he was talking about was obsolete by the time this aired. Its like saying use punch cards from the 1940s. Sure you could do it and it may use less electricity, but using millions of cards is not practical
I personally like that there are different styles in every "dragon den" show, I feel bad for the people with bad inventions but at the same time I find it hilarious on this show.
Ya'll can laugh all you want, Very PC is still ACTIVE and making crap loads of cash. I was very surprised to see amount of hate this 26 year old received in there by a bunch of bullies. Fair play to Peter for not giving up, and becoming a very wealthy man!
Bullies my ass. Whether they're wrong about its potential, fair enough. That doesn't mean they should have invested. Investment means you get what you expect back. You can't say that would have happened undesputedly.
I think the main reason why the Dragons didn't invest in this guy (aside from the fact that his pitch honestly wasn't that great) was because the UK had a lot of small, independent PC manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s, only for the likes of Dell, HP and Apple to come in and completely steamroller the independent manufacturers out of existence in the early-mid 2000s. He might have made a success out of it in the end, but there was no guarantee that the big manufacturers wouldn't have just copied his business model (which was essentially just sticking laptop parts in PC cases).
*sigh* He was only using RS232 as an EXAMPLE of something that's over 20 years old and was more environmentally-friendly than the stuff he was trying to sell them. From what I could gather from each of these exchanges, you could just buy the parts from PC World yourself, put them together and turn on the power saving feature, and it would be less expensive and more green than a VeryPC. Mind you, this was 10 years ago, and hopefully the company have learned and moved on a lot since this!
Well, over a decade later and they seem to be running a small local computer systems installation firm. Apparently they're just profitable enough to stay in business... They don't claim they have world changing green tech anymore though, for some reason :-)
You know what, Very PC succeeded where eMachines failed, it's survived multiple consumer spending habit changes, multiple recessions and a pandemic. Fair play.
Peter Hopton was right, Peter Jones on RS232? That was developed in the 1960s. In fact it was extinct even when this episode was aired. Its the sort of thing you could use with Commodore 64 era computers. Today, its the equivalent of someone saying: "You could use punch cards, it would be an old fashioned way of doing it" "I could do it though couldn't I?"
He got the valuation over, they are only off the shelf parts, so he's a builder not an OEM, but apart from that there's nothing here which explains why they were so very rude. My guess is he did or said something you can't see in this film and it pissed them all off. It's dominoes too. Peter started laying into him and the others just joined in. He's still in business, you can Google for them, and there's articles online saying he went on to £1,500,000 per year straight after this was filmed. Even if he isn't an OEM, there's nothing stopping the business specialising in low wattage components. I'm not usually charitable but in this case I don't see what the fuss was about that kicked off all the abuse.
They company is worth around £200,000 even all these years later. There's a big difference between turnover and net profit. He has done OK but only OK. The valuation he gave was completely mental. The money he asked for was far too much. None of them would have made any money on this investment. They knew it. He knew it. Plus when questioned, he actually had nothing to back up any of his claims and kept saying "you're buying into the brand". Well the brand is still not worth a huge amount so... they were right. Maybe a bit harsh on him for sure but they were definitely right to steer well clear of this.
@@sugs1191 It was turning over £1.5 million a year last I heard, but the net figure was probably less than that. He valued the company at £5 million, which is what annoyed them, so he was still quite a bit off the mark, even if he has some level of success afterwards.
This guy will make a big success some day,he was 26 hear, regardless of wether it was rubbish or not,he speaks well, conducted himself well, and has the balls to have a go,good luck to you peter Hopton
