Drawing- Start to finish copying

In this video I break down a standard art copying task. Pencil on paper.
The stages show-
1- How I plot proportion.
2- Reading tonal range and directional line to convey volume and how I apply it.
3- Surface description through mark making, in this I consider outline as edge and how marks describe.
I believe rendering reality, from a single photo or image, has less value than drawing that helps us design and realise. However, we make you do it at GCSE and A-Level! Doing it helps inform your confidence and vocabulary to communicate through drawing. Plus, it is impressive and many will be taken in as you wow them with the way you copy. If you are being assessed against a marks scheme with levels, a controlled drawing captures the attention like the person on the talent show who sings beautifully. For these reasons developing controlled drawing is part of the education package in many schools. Yet, ultimately, we want you to know your voice, to use the theory but use your own hand writing and communicate through drawing confidently and with personally.
