Great work by the crew to keep order and control of the game. Classic comments by the announcer...with zero context, instantly assumes that the umpire is in the wrong.
Crew Chief releases a statement on Gilbert's ejection: “Tennessee #1 Drew Gilbert argued several pitches during the top of the second inning, steaming in from cente rfield. To begin the next inning, I talked to the player between innings, warning him to direct his comments only to his team, not our crew or the other team. He said OK and that he just gets excited. “During the fifth inning following strike one, Tennessee batter Gilbert yelled an expletive, followed by another expletive as he walked out of the box and was subsequently ejected.” -Billy Van Raaphorst
@@tennessee974 You can argue balls and strikes as long as you are looking in the opposite direction of the umpire. Most umpires, myself included, will leave that alone as long as you're not directly confronting them. However, like in this case, you can't look directly at the umpire as you pretend to walk away and say "are you f*****g blind" and not expect to get ejected. That is an absolute no-no, you're going to be run every single time, and there is not a player, coach, or manager anywhere in organized baseball that doesn't understand how that works. The fact is Notre Dame was kicking the beJesus out of Tennessee and they, all of them including their inbred fans, were just looking for someone else to blame. That is the fact of the matter and everybody in the room knows it.
Yes, that's exactly right. Some 19-year-old whines because he thought he could say anything he wanted, and dropping the F bomb is a one-way ticket to the shower. He deserved to get tossed
Couldn’t have said it better myself, even if it was a ball (which it was) an umpire isn’t going to hear too many of those f bombs directed at him all night.
Yeah I agree with you one time in summer ball I was running home and was called out and I said the word fuck and that’s all the umpire heard and threw me out. Just don’t cuss or argue with umpire unless it’s just an absolute terrible call
@@coreymoquin8974 Of course we don’t. We just see his actions. And the rest of Tennessee players and especially coaches. This program is run by a coach who came out of the dugout and threw a bat at Auburn players. And physically pushed a ref. He is a joke. And my school waited in Omaha for UT. They just weren’t good enough to get there.
Or maybe that the umps are too sensitive and need to grow up! Gilbert says one thing and he tosses him and frank Anderson asks a question and gets tossed. Come on! Tennessee plays real baseball and the umps need to grow up, and I’m sorry his feelings got hurt. ITS BASEBALL!!!
My favorite part is the announcers alluding to the fact that the umpires "watch twitter" and haven't umped a lot of Tennessee games as if that made Gilbert less of a jackass lol
@@tomk4t in true commentator fashion, they have absolutely no idea what was said, have no idea what the rules are but pass themselves off as experts on all things related to the game while remaining infallible in their own eyes
Funny they were wrong, and literally had to walk nearly everything back. The mouth gaping open is a sign this snowflake has rarely been held accountable in his life.
@@TeemoQuinton That’s a false dichotomy. The correct rule should be applied when necessary for game management purposes. In this case, the announcers were not correct about what happened. It was neither a player nor coach from the bench who got tossed. The batter got tossed, and a coach who left the bench got tossed.
@@joshrob316 Astros got a huge steal 🤣🤣perfect fit for them…he was heated in important game bc it was a ball…..gonna be a lot easier to take those when you getting paid millions and millions
nah, they just reacted to the quickness of it all. they did a fine job of recapping and coming to the right conclusion. broadcasting is a harder job than you think
The last time the Tennessee Pitching Coach Frank Anderson appeared this season; he was promptly suspended 3 games for this incident. To make things worse, Notre Dame wound up going to Omaha.
People need to stop acting like its just todays kids that act like this in sports. These rules were made because of previous generations of players like Gilbert Gilbert is a punk but so are those middle aged coaches for Tenn They all deserved what they got
The lack of class, both in the dugout and stands is sad--I believe Tenn has one of the strongest college baseball teams EVER. Wish they let their play speak for them instead of what the announcers keep calling "swagger". It's arrogant conceit displayed by these players and another win by ND today would go a long way to humble this team.
So the announcers immediately saying, "you can't do that", but know nothing about what transpired before this to set it up, is just bad announcing. The announcers shouldn't be making assumptions about why he got tossed. Gilbert was warned in the 2nd inning (while playing centerfield) about directing comments at the umpire and was told to stop or he'd be tossed. Three innings later, you saw what happened, and if you can read lips, you know what he said. Don't show up the umpire, don't curse at the umpire, don't argue balls and strikes, and once you've been warned, expect to get tossed if you say anything again. And for the announcers, don't assume a player is being tossed for a single incident. Assume the umpire is doing his job and trying to keep the game under control.
Whether it's the right call or not, you can't tell the umpire that he is f'ing terrible... automatic ejection. Plus, dude, it's a 1-1 count now... so what? Keep battling instead of chirping.
Incredible mindset of the announcer "I don't know what he said, but they can't throw him out for that" When did amateurs get the right to argue balls and strikes, then get back up by the announcer. It looks like they forgot this is Collage ball with the primary concern being sportsmanship. It is more than a privilege to playball and go to a div 1 school for free. If a player, team or coach can't play the game without arguing with the ump in a manner that gets him tossed I'd say there are many that would take their place and follow the rules. In return for representing the school and four years on the house all they have to do is be respectful, they don't have to agree with a call, but don't shit on the rules and try to be larger than the game. This is the Coaches job to keep the players inline. "Everybody does it so they should toss everyone' Thats the spirit
The announcers should come to worker and have someone tell them they are F horrible. See how they react. Then back track and say the umpire is in the right???They should make an apology for their snap judgement
I thought it looked fine up/down, so maybe it was inside. As a batter, you can say things like, "That wasn't in?" or "I thought that was in." or even ask "Where was that?" Most umpires will answer you if you keep it civil and calm. Nobody is getting run for that. If you turn around and bark at the umpire like he did, then you won't be in the game. They should know this.
Amazing how the story from the broadcasters was automatically "ump show" without evidence, and immediately upon seeing the evidence, it was clear how the umpire did exactly what was warranted. Blame the guy who broke the rules. In baseball, and in life. Enough of this justification crap that is killing our society. Making up excuses for bad acts is what got us here, and continuing to do so will kill what was once so amazing!
Hell, athletes that are deemed "special" never pay for negative actions. It's really sad that you can be the biggest asshole ever but if you are a high rated athlete, you're just excitable and high-strung.
No class for Gilbert. That umpire is policing the game don’t disrespect him, you struck out, go to the dug out like a descent human with class and don’t embarrass yourself, your team or your momma and for goodness sake man close your mouth. He seriously looked like a surprised two year old.
Just because you can’t hit the bottom corner of the strike zone doesn’t mean the Ump is terrible 😂, means the pitcher is better at his job than you are at yours.
ND catcher does them no favors--the need to frame EVERY SINGLE pitch to center of plate? I appreciate some subtle framing, but not what this dude does.
@@electrorl9299 It's close--too close to call, especially given the pitchers height and arm-slot and the camera angle. That pitch was downhill big time, and I think it caught the low and in edge. But regardless, only a roid-rager would sacrifice his team by GOING OFF on an umpire ensuring his ejection. Gilbert's obviously not there on an academic scholarship!
Dudes got anger management issues--reminds me of a former buddy when he'd start roid-raging... These announcers should be fired!!! First off, that pitch caught the edge of the zone, WAS a strike--and the announcers? Calling out the officiating crew? "This can't happen." Yada, yada yada. Hope ND finds a way to put Vols away!
The commentator is prognosticatinf before he has any knowledge of what the batter really said. It's interesting that he decides to go that route, instead of asking out loud something like "Wow, what did the batter say to be ejected?". Then the commentator seems to suggest that a batter should have several bites at the apple - verbal abuses to the ump - before there is any consideration of ejection. That poisons the public square by suggesting that the current rules should not be observed. Then parents and children in TV land start thinking that they really should be free to jaw-off to umpires about...whatever. Not a virtuous circle of actions.
Tennessee was to good of a team to show the arrogance they did. I truly believe it starts at the top. Arguing balls and strikes is fine but it's your language folks and attitude starts at the top
Gilbert may be guilty of saying something to the Umpire but the Umpire is guilty of a bad call. It was not in the strike zone and the catcher like he's supposed to do caught the ball raise his mitt and the Umpire should have seen that but he didn't or ignored it. I can't stand it when umpires don't get calls right and in this game especially is showing favoritism, Tennessee's already down what good did it do him to do that. But the rules are the rules and apparently they favor the umpires and referees
I've umped for years, and while I feel like I have read that rule, I truly have never ejected someone in the middle of an at bat and I had no idea about that 1-1 rule, I almost assumed that it would be an automatic out but it makes more sense that they would do it the way they did
Especially if they review the footage which they can and see that it was actually a ball. It never ceases to baffle me lion baseball. They don't just have a actual laser grid that calls balls and strikes because it will never be wrong.
Gilbert deserved to get ejected, and then the assistant coach acting like a child should get ejected as well. Trash got thrown out in this game. I'm so happy the Irish won this series. Overrated Vols. Some kind of season in 2023.
That's the problem, announcer - you don't know what was said. There are a lot more reasons you can be tossed from a game other than "arguing balls and strikes." Cursing is a reason someone can be ejected, and if they were already warned about it then that's the consequences of his actions. Yes, the umpires can toss you at any time and in fact they're supposed to for repeated warning violations. "They play with fire" is not an excuse for violating the rules over and over, and especially after the umpire has warned the player. Stop pandering to the crowd and be honest - that's the biggest problem in the whole nation is that media announcers are pandering to people rather than informing them. Would be nice to mic up the players and record everything said. I wonder how that would affect everything? Would be amusing to hear all the real talk out there - how much of the swearing and trash talking would have to be censored? And if any of it has to be censored, maybe various leagues would start to take action.
Ehhh......it was more than one bad call in that OM game. That was brewing for a while in that game and was driven by OM players flopping every chance they got to slow the game. That entire game was a cluster and the crew running it should have been disbanded immediately following it. You could throw a hefty fine on ol' Kiffin as well if he wants to play football like that. It was low-rent Busch League from the start, and I don't have a dog in the fight.
Don't make bad calls and you won't be called a bad umpire. Umpires should be forced to take it unless it slows down the game. Zero accountability otherwise.
Umpires and referees that do you stuff like this need to be reprimanded? I get there's a shortage but it's ruining the game for the kids. Hell just yeah tonight. My daughter's team had an umpire calling strikes when the ball was literally a foot over her head.
