Today I'll be going over very briefly how I drill & tap my 1/64 scale diecast cars once the rivets are drilled out (for body removal, wheel swaps etc). I prefer to use size 2-56 tap & drill set from Du-Bro (part # 360). amzn.to/2JABpA8 Other tools needed: 11/64 drill bit (just my pref), Power Drill, T-handle, and tiny 2-56 x 1/8 button head bolts. The Allen wrench I prefer to use now: amzn.to/2JBSbPl

i would highly recommend staying away from the cheaper 3 and 4 flute taps , they break much too easy ,,, 2 flute plug taps are ideal, much stronger and push the chips up thru the flutes much better as well.

I've used button heads and standards, I like both. I am still have the occasional problem getting screws to start after tapping. I use a #50 bit for the pilot hole and 2-56 tap but its been hit or miss with screws..I need to clean the holes better I guess and see if thats the problem. The tap i use is for starting threads. I didn't know there were 3 different types of taps. One for starting, one for through holes and one thats not tapered on the end..Im gonna check out that tap you are using if I can't get the screws to start doing what they are supposed to do, everytime..Thanks for sharing

In test fitting a screw, the hex head stripped out. Any way to remove it aside from trying to find a micro screw extractor?
@rxblx2442
@rxblx2442 5 лет назад
If you can manage it, make a cut along the entire top of the bolt, but not so deep that it cuts into the threads. This essentially turns it into a flat head bolt, allowing you to remove it with a small flat head screwdriver.

Is there any reason why use the eighth inch screw instead of the 3/16
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube 6 лет назад
No real reason, I just have better luck w/ the shorter ones. I do have 3/16ths as well but find myself using the 1/8ths more frequently.

ok I have a similar set of taps and drill bits but I'm always snapping them off in cars what am I doing wrong?
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube 6 лет назад
Hum, you might be bottoming out or sometimes theres a buildup of metal chips in the flutes, and that could cause them to snap off if they are not cleared out (by going counter clockwise sometimes in between your rotations). Or, if the drill bit size used is too small, that could cause an issue too.
@japple6779
@japple6779 6 лет назад
I use the drill bit it came with so maybe I'm not drilling far enough I will see how far it is next time and backing up to remove chips is a good idea thanks!

+J Apple No problem; I just took a machining class and embarrassingly broke off two taps in there and I was being super careful since the instructor was hovering, but they are so brittle it can happen fast. I work with a guy with 50 years experience and he breaks taps all of the time.
@solojrbb
@solojrbb 4 года назад
I broke like 5 taps before I figured it out. I personally found the correct way for me was just getting a feel for it. Handle it very gingerly and not force anything. ONce you feel the tap getting snug, back it off. Remember you are only going in around 3/16th of an inch...Once I stopped forcing the tap forward and backing it out, I haven't broken another tap since then..Just remember less is more with these things

I see other restorer's use a lubricant, either a light oil or beeswax, is there a reason you do not?

I Think the 1/8" long are too small, ordered them and they won't work on all Cars . I'm Ordering 3/16" ! So If You're going to Order one Size Get 3/16" long ! You'll be Happy You Did !

Suggest hot wheels Mattel to change its policy, to use newly easy-could be-opened screw-out method, so we fans could easily screw out the nails, instead of using too many dangerous drilling s and related methods to repair a car or clean something! 30 % of my whole hot wheels now was invaded by bed bugs, many of cars the windscreen and the cabin was disguising bed bugs inside, bad smells and ugly corpse. Since I travelled by the way backpacker to Langkawi n Kuala L bumper in 2009 2010. I got unconsciously the bed bugs attached to my whole backpack. Disaster!!!

Interested in doing some wheelswaps for me?
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube 6 лет назад
I can do a video of the process for you and others who might be interested in wheel swaps (?) Doing it yourself is really easy and something most people can do w/ very little equipment. My cordless drill is a $20 one from Harbor Freight, so you don't need any fancy tools to do them. Thanks for watching, Christian, and commenting!

Ive tried. I ruin them all. Especially the older ones. I don't mind paying. Obviously! And I will take care of return shipping. But only if your interested?

Just name your price on each wheel swap? And maybe custom paint jobs if your interested also. Let me know.
