I also didn't know where Merton is, but from comments below understood it. It is a exciting sight for nature lovers, & a astonishing beauty by itself. A beautiful way to halt. Thanks for the video.

Sitter på min motionscykel och trampar hela den vackra vägen. Fantastisk resa. Allt detta har varit täckt av vatten en gång i tiden. Stort tack från norra Sverige!

Loved this video so much, my first view of New Zealand, so different, the trees, the bushes, just everything beautiful. Would love to see this same drive again about same time of year now, just to see all those construction jobs done and how it looks now. Thanks so much for this!

remember that journey as a 12 year old aussie kid seeing my NZ relatives on a massive stream engine from Dunedin to Christchurch...1964.. still in my minds eye the coastline cliffs north of Dunedin

We lived at Osborne Township during the early to mid 80's. During school holidays my brother and I would often lie in ambush for the Southerner, ready to pelt it with ripe passionfruit or eggs as it went past. Fantastic to see the drivers view of Mihiwaka Tunnel, never would have guessed it goes in pretty much a straight line.

Thank you. This ride took me through some very early family history. Seacliff, Waitati, Omimi. I visited these places some years ago, my family (Richardsons) were among the earliest settlers to develop the Kilmog.

Same. Lived at Omimi and Seacliff in the early 1960s as a little tacker & watched the train from the back yard

Another great video of NZ Geoff , a beautiful trip along the coast , you see more from the front of the engine than you see from one side of a carriage , keep those videos coming

Interesting Geoff, spent many happy holidays in this area as a child as my dads best friend was the rural GP at Palmerston his whole working life. I’ve done the Christchurch to Dunedin (and back) trip only once via steam train with my grandmother in the 1950’s . Really great to see these parts of NZ from a perspective that most of us will never see. Cheers

Great video.... I'm an Aussie and I put visiting NZ on my bucket list a while back....I might give it a look soon... I noticed that the train did not toot the horn at every main road crossing there, like we do in OZ..

It is February 7, 2023, on a cold winters day in Ontario Canada. And I am looking at this video on my 86 inch 4K tv. If i stand in front of the tv, I feel like am sitting in the cab. This has been one of the most scenic and relaxing videos I have seen in a long time. Not like the congested Japanese cab rides. Or the graffiti covered and run down cab rides in some European countries. If I may suggest, a copy of the route map, and a photo of the train, at the begining. Would be helpful.

Think 'The Southern' was stopped mid 2002?? Lack of numbers, ie it was not making any money, before The Southern when it was pulled by JA steam locomotives it was called The South Island Express from memory, that in 1971, JA 1274 ( in the glass case Dunedin RW station ) was one of the steamers to pull that train, there is very little wrong with JA1274 it was built in early 1950s.

One set of grand parents built a small house between Warrington and Edendale. SIMT was above the house and section and we could see the line and trains on the far side of Blueskin Bay. Magic days for a small child. I was a foamer, even then.

05:30..Church at Puketeraki seen. Excellent inside. Where Matt Ellison and Sarah Osborne were married in the 1970s. Seacliff made me a wee bit homesick; had a Relly live at end of culdesac at this place, with a fantastically great view....crossed Coast Road at 16:05...19:35 sees evidence of Double Tracking which used to be there almost erased. When did this occur? 30:35 to 31:42 has Waitati Crossing Loop..climb begins to Doctors Point, which overlooks Blueskin Bay down below (if I remember correctly)....31:56 to 31:57 Wagon Flicker observed ( as told to me by another now-long-since-departed Railwayman)...39:04 to 39:28 has Cliff Tunnel...48:02 to 51:20 is Mihiwaka Tunnel. Never realised this as long as this is...also appears to have been brick-lined and roof cleaned, too...56:43 to 57:14 is Upper Port Chalmers Tunnel (so I believe)...1:03:30 is Sawyers Bay Tunnel. Sorry for the longish "commentary" but I could not help myself. I am a loyal DUNEDINITE whom happens to choose to live in Canterbury. I support the HIGHLANDERS
