Just a little update on the first clip thanks to one of my viewers who has emailed with this information. The Audi that we first see is a totally different car than the second one that appears. Go and check it out! I actually think that the first one is an A4 and the second one is an A6, but they have a very similar look. Nice one Matthew!!

Interesting to hear. And now I'm wondering if that's partly what caught the Toyota by surprise. Namely, mixing up a slower moving Audi with an almost identical looking faster one?

Very bad driving by audi, far too fast & rather reckless, however it is a two lane road approaching a roundabout, so perfectly legal to pass on the inside. Silver car, really poor driving, changing lane without any indication (although most peeps indicate as they start the manoeuvre, making indicating pretty pointless) so most likely they did not check rear & side mirrors. Revoke both their licences & make them take a course of lessons & a retest.

Everyone needs to work together and be patient for merges to work: I've seen endless exampled of people going into the right hand lane to 'get ahead' of people in the left, pushing to be ahead of the other lane of traffic. That's what leads to people in the left refusing to ceed way, sticking nose to bumper to deny merge taffic an opportunity to merge safely. I know that what should happen is that drivers open up the gap so they can easily zip-merge without stopping (unless the traffic has stopped) and on occasion I've seen cars move over to the second lane and stay alongside 'their' space to stop people pushing to the head of the queue. There's also the confusion over if you should merge early or late: The advice seems to be if the traffic is light or flowing quickly, merge early. If it's slow then merge late to give people time to sort out spacing. I'm prone to merge early (but also try to stick to the left most lane when possible) but have learned when there's slow traffic that waiting to merge can be better - but to slow down so I'm not racing ahead - partly because the left lane might be slowed due to traffic leaving the duel carriageway rather than roadworks (so watch the signage!) but also there may be slower moving cars who want to change lanes for (reason) and they don't see you approaching quickly. Basically, if the left lane is slow, it's an idea to slow down as a precaution and to remain 'safe'.

@@stevepowell491 If we're doing it properly, both lanes should be approximately equal length, so in theory, there's no problem with going for the shortest line. The problem is the propensity of the majority to go early to the non-merging lane, then the lane police can jump into action. Already stated, publicity is a large part of the solution. We have large "Merge in Turn" signs here on the A354 and people still get crabby about it.

​@@ts757arsethe best (worst?) one for me is the e-moped being ridden by someone in shorts, flipflops and no lid along the M8 at Friday peak time last summer. What should've been an hour tops journey home ended up being over 3 as the police tried to stop the rider. 😢

Mobility scooters are perfectly entitled to be on dual carriageways, though do require a flashing amber beacon, which I did not see in this case. It is the responsibility of drivers to avoid hitting them.

​@@matta5160I prefer it. Much easier as a cyclist, just take primary and let the cars use the alternate lane to overtake. Cuntish drivists still try and pass in your lane though. It's why I don't even bother gesticulating these days, just take the footage and submit to OP Snap.

It seems that there are still lots of drivers who incorrectly believe pedestrians must give way to cars at all times. Of course, that doesn't mean pedestrians can ignore their own lights. Absolutely true that the chances of that increase in wet weather.

Get behind the mobility scooter, hazards on, match speed, call the police. Whether he's taken a wrong turn and is terrified and confused, or stubbornly oblivious, he needs help getting to safety, and keeping others safe from his erratic behaviour. Probably the most satisfying job the traffic police will be called to that day. Home in time for Countdown.

As it seems to be a section of the A1, rather than the A1M, legally, the only thing that the mobility scooter seems to have done wrong is that it doesn't have a flashing amber light. From a safety point of view, it is potentially an issue though, and you are correct that the 'driver' may have taken a wrong turn.

The only thing that mobility scooter was doing wrong on the A1 was ,not holding a commanding position in his own lane ,to prevent other vehicles just brushing them aside in their own lane ,when overtaking . All the other drivers were impatient & speeding & going way faster than 8 mph which is already a hell of a pace . That white van man was absolutely homicidal ,overtaking the scooter in its own lane ,instead of moving into an overtaking lane to make a safe overtake. The disabled scooter pilot can’t win ,if they stick to the sidewalks & pedestrian areas they have to put with pedestrians ,& baby buggy’s that rush around getting in their way . If they go onto the road ,they have to put up with numpties ,who want to travel at mad speeds above 8 mph .

The clip at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="427">7:07</a> was my clip. Thanks for featuring. Just a note he had a woman and a young child in the vehicle. My impression was that the driver was doing it for fun to try and entertain the kid perhaps. If so its still very dangerous. I let them overtake further up, in-case something was happening, but they drove normally for around 15 minutes afterwards, so I think they were just dangerously messing around.

I have just sent a comment that that happened to me in my Fiesta when the rear anti roll bar snapped while i was driving and I was swinging to and fro as I drove along before I got to a garage . Though obviously this was not the case in your clip.

​@@andrewnorris5415 That Van was stopped because of oncoming traffic just not for long at that point it was the driver was just driving without due care an attention, did not notice a dude in High vis on the road, that Mc Donald's is near Horsforth Leeds and is a rife with impatient drivers don't know why if it's the residents or something else causing it problems it is on one of the major Leeds City Loop Roads though.

On the merge-in-turn clip, I think if traffic is flowing freely through the confined space, you should aim to keep that happening. Going up to the cones and then trying to merge is disrupting traffic, not helping it flow. At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="149">02:29</a> we see a big gap before the white Audi so that's where the camera car should have merged.

Tell you what, it's not like a flashing light would be able to save you in the event of a tyre blowout.

Fiesta has bent a track-rod end due to a collision with pothole or kerb, and trying to get home with the front wheels pointing in slightly different directions. It's called the death wobble. Can also happen if track-rod end left unlocked after a wheel alignment.

I once knew a numpty that used to drive like this in order to be cool and impress girls. It was back in the early 90s and he had a Vauxhall Nova. Not long after passing his test as well. Sometimes we would go out in the car with him instead of in mine, up to places like Newcastle or the Metrocentre. On one of these trips when my girlfriend was with me in his car, along with one of his mates he started to swerve back and fourth across the road while laughing like an idiot. It scared the crap out of me, as the car was loaded with four people, and the inertia and weight was obviously more than when it was just him. He thought it was funny and cool. He started doing this swerve trick over and over again, over the coming weeks, so in the end I stopped getting in the car with him. He thought it was impressive and in the end I stopped hanging around with him, due to him turning into a total A hole. About a month after I last spoke to him, I learned he had wrapped the Nova round another car, bounced off and hit a wall while speeding and swerving in a back lane, in order to impress more girls...He got nicked for it and lost his license for a while.....

@@user-mp1br6yh1g Do you seriously think that the two are comparable? What do you think the safety implications are of someone mixing recyclable and non recyclable waste? Ideally, people should make sure that they separate recyclable hate properly (when too many fault do so it can make the difference between waste being recycled or the whole lot going to landfill or other forms of waste disposal. Even if you weren't already aware that a lot of waste that is supposedly going to recycling plants ends up in landfill purely because people think it doesn't matter if they don't sort it well, the safety issue alone should be enough for you to understand how pathetic your post is - but since you posted it, it's obvious that isn't the case.

Yeah, the differential speed in the merge-in-turn at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="142">2:22</a> with the queue was a bit on the fast side. When passing any queue I aim to be going slowly enough relative to the queue that I can stop in time if the next car in front of me were to pull out without prior warning. Personally I'd have slotted in behind the white Audi at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="150">2:30</a>; often what makes these merge-in-turn situations become fraught is not taking an easy gap when it presents itself and looking like you're rushing past the queue rather than looking like you're hunting for a safe gap.

at a merge in turn, you're not "hunting for a safe gap", you're moving ahead to the obstruction to merge there. you don't close a zipper 1 tooth at a time whenever they happen to line up, do you?

I always find merge in turn in these situations where you have travelled a fair distance, just requires a nice steady decrease to almost walking speed as you near the merge. Vary rarely have i 'triggered' anyone doing it this way. If it does I just let them continue and slot in beind them. Makes little difference to me as I have already made good progress anyway. 🙂

Exactly! And, just to add to this, what I usually do is pick a car well in advance and match its speed as closely as possible for the zip. If it slows/stops, I do too. That way everyone can see where I'm slotting in. Works every time. The worst thing you can do - if the other lane stops - is try to go one car further up the queue, just because you can. (Admittedly it has taken me nearly 30 years to figure out how to get it right.)

Once I had a huge queue in the left lane stretching so far back it was blocking a junction so a good chunk of the people in the queue were waiting for the junction. A load of cars including myself were meandering up lane 2 to the merge in turn. A car pulled out behind me and followed me up the road. When we got to the end we were going walking pace, a guy left a gap for me so I slowly started to filter in when the car behind me swerved into it and under took me. The guy behind widened the gap to let me in again. As I started to filter in the guy that undertook me started flagging me. The traffic stopped so I pulled along side and wound the window down to ask what was wrong. I'm in no way aggressive or confrontational as a person but I genuinely didn't know what I had done wrong. I was thinking there was something wrong with the car or I'd done something without even knowing I'd done it. The driver wouldn't wind his window down or look at me but the passenger was screaming and gesturing. Sadly I couldn't hear as their window was was shut. We were all stationary and all of a sudden the driver just floored it and smashed straight into the back of the car infront. His excuse was because I tried to push in 🤷‍♂️ I never did find out why he undertook and swore at me. Its not like I was the only person doing it, doing anything wrong or being pushy 🤷‍♂️ Strange people around.

While I agree to some extend, uneducated drivers are arguably a bigger hazard. People overestimating their driving ability combined with other drivers who tend to go 10-50 under the limit. Some people *really* shouldn't be allowed to drive.

The first clip prior to the intro. As well as undertaking, the Audi didn't drive in a consistent manner or at a consistent speed. Initially they were relatively slow and then suddenly sped up considerably. This must have been a factor in catching out the Toyota by surprise. Wonder also what speed the Audi was ultimately doing in relation to the speed limit. Agreed though that the Toyota didn't do the best job either.

So for the clip starting at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="143">2:23</a>- yes, I think 40mph was a little too fast to be zipping past in lane 2. But on the positive, having got to the front of the queue, the cammer didn't insist on or bully a <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="61">1:1</a> merge- s/he was ok with 3 or 4 cars going by before merging themselves, so I say fair play.

Ugh. It's quite simple. Use all available road space, all lanes until merge point, then use the zip method. Cammer did the right thing, mostly everyone else is just stupid. There are no lines to read between here, no etiquette or manners to be concerned with, just follow the rules they are very clear

@@jastat While that is what should happen, it clearly isn't what does happen. If you just stick to the letter of the rules 100% of the time, without any anticipation, your driving is no better than the people not allowing the merge. It was clear they weren't going to let the cammer in, so why antagonize them, instead of just slotting in one of the spaces before?

At around <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="323">5:23</a> with the oncoming Range Rover encroaching on the cammers side in order to pass a cyclist: No doubt these are also the kinds of drivers that try to push you into overtaking a cyclist when you are patiently waiting behind the cyclist because there simply isn't room. I refuse to be pressured in this way or compromise the safety of the cyclist, myself or any oncoming vehicle. I wonder whether these drivers are even aware of the minimum required passing distance to give to cyclists.

Merging: it would be nice to have some hard rules in place. Something like, if second lane is free, use that lane to prevent long tailbacks leading to disruption on other roads. Where there is traffic in both lanes, neither lane has priority; vehicles from each lane must merge one after the other.

The horse traiker clip yep should of waited for longer gap but be aware you cant do 0-60 mph in four secinds with a horse in the back they are not strapped in and do not lock their legs until underway hence give em a chance to pull out safely. When i see this even for hgvs i slow down flashy lights and give ground. Easy as that. Look ahead few hundred feet not just in front of your vehicle . The pedestrian crossing tell tell sign was car on left had not gone when light changed. The driver on the right should ask himself/herself what is going on at this crossing and slowed down to se if it was clear.😊

The narrowing of 2 lane’s into 1 should be marked every time with signs saying use both lanes & merge in turn every 150 metres or so. It’s because the outer lane doesn’t get used to its full capacity problems arise people think they are cutting in after queuing like sheep in lane 1 way back.

There is roadworks at a section of the main road through the town where it goes 2 lanes in either direction to 1 lane contraflow. They've replaced the "lane closing" signs from 800 to 200 yards with signs that read "when queuing use both lanes" at around 100m intervals on the LHS footpath and on the central island. At peak times, the queue is usually 2 miles back across multiple roundabouts and controlled junctions because mostly everyone has a phobia of driving in lane 1 anyway

Nice selection of learning points this time round and the biggest I can see is to knock a few Mph off the speed when approaching a crossing with a green light. Your cammer stopped in time but with the poor conditions the tyres could’ve easily slipped more than they did, even woth ABS

It may surprise you to know that (a) my tyres did not slip one iota in the deceleration, and (b) my braking effort was not such that ABS was triggered. I stopped in time at a safe distance from the pedestrian, despite her walking straight across my path. I think that makes my speed consistent with the weather conditions and appropriate approaching the crossing. Maybe your comment reflects something about your driving that you need to address... after all, you do say my footage is your biggest learning point.

Unfortunately my use of the written word can occasionally be ambiguous, and at times unclear as to the full intentions of what I was trying to say to which I apologise My comment was more aimed at drivers who don’t adjust their speed in wet conditions or for traffic conditions. You clip highlighted perfectly why that is important to keep speed slower as the pedestrian crossed without any concern for what was around I would say though that for me personally, I would’ve already been slowing more purely due to the pedestrian that was crossing right to left and the requirement to not overtake a vehicle giving way to pedestrians on the crossing, but that is me and how I drive which will always be different to how others drive 👍 Take care out there

But please look again - the car on the left was correctly positioned i.e. not obstructing the crossing, but note that this was not "giving way to pedestrians on the crossing" but instead was waiting for the queue ahead to move which it did after I had stopped. And as Ashley, again correctly, says in another reply (not his exact words...) - where there are two or more distinct lanes and the vehicles in one are stationary (queuing), those in the other lane can go (on Green)... they are not, in this instance, "overtaking". Ashley says I could have gone "a tad" slower, but also acknowledges that I did actually stop. I dunno - "a tad" slower wasn't needed here, but if it had been an electric scooter zipping across in front of me then "a tad" wouldn't have been nearly enough, probably... but should one drive to cater for every eventuality? That's a whole other discussion. ATB

The white car was already trying to hog both lanes so he was already giving the message that he had no intention of giving way. So no surprise all round as to what happened next. If the camer had slowly and calmly coasted down in the outside lane I suspect that the white car might have been less aggressive [but he still might not have wanted to give way anyway🤔]

When I was walking with my friend, we did something rlly stupid a few weeks ago. Ran across a 50mph dual carriageway but there were traffic lights and one driver stopped for us (it was green for car traffic and we weren't on the road yet). So as soon as he let us go, we crossed and a lot of cars came and honked and swore at us. I can understand that, but letting me go across a 50mph dual carriageway when its green for car traffic is ridiculous. But I can admit, what I did was not acceptable at all.

There are some situations a mobility scooter would be on a dual carriageway. Maybe a video showing these or talking about it and what the mobility scooter user should be doing. Just to give viewers warning of what to expect (amber flashing light, positioning etc) Thanks for all the work you do. Once my wheelchairs dash cam is in place and I have some driving fails (daily) I will send them in 😅

It is purely bad design and drop down kerbs on one side and have to travel further down for the opposite drop down kerb.

Re your last clip. Time was when there were traffic lights just north of the Wetherby roundabout on the A! which went to red to allow the farmer to take his herd of cows across the road for milking. Problem was that the lights were just around the left hand bend as you came off the roundabout to go north to Ripon or Darlington. The road surface was not all that clean either, so you had to take care that you left extra space between you and the vehicle in front to account for the "brown lubricant" that almost certainly was on your tyres.

Hi just a quick point on the mobility scooter on the A1. Although it doesn't look to be the case here you can ride a class 3 mobility scooter on the A1 or dual carriage way as long as it has a flashing Amber light. You can also ride pedal powered vehicles unless there is a sign explicitly prohibiting it. Also merging in with cones, got to be a German car owner 😉

That last clip with the mobility scooter on the A1! Not sure of the specifics but I know some categories of these scooters are road legal. HOWEVER - Even if legal in this case, highly dangerous! I wonder if this is a regular route for that person! And I'm waiting for someone to comment they should be riding facing against the traffic as it's "safer"! This clip also highlights the importance of realising that dual carriageways have additional dangers to motorways even though the speed limits are often the same.

I'm glad you mentioned the speed for the clip starting at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="144">2:24</a>. 40 mph next to a line of stationary traffic. Not prepared for anything appearing from between vehicles. Driving down the closing lane at too high a speed will also result in more people believing it's solely self-centred intentions behind the move. If you're actually about improving flow, you will match your speed to other traffic where possible, and a 40 mph difference isn't that. Too many take your advice to drive to the front and fixate on that, instead of being prepared for traffic to start moving and looking to match the speed of a gap to slot into before they get there. You can continue to drive in the closing lane until the end, but if you pace a space you will eliminate all possible conflict when you get there, and only that truly improves flow for everyone.

Every single one of them knows they're not supposed to do it and they'd be buggered if they got caught but they think they won't get caught or they won't have an accident. No one's texts on a phone consciously thinking "I'm going to crash" or "the police are going to get me". Could retest every year, it won't make a difference. Most people, me included, just forget everything the minute the test is over and you don't need to know it anymore. So even in that regard people would just practice it for a week and then not bother with it for another year. Don't get me wrong though there's definitely a lot of people who clearly don't know certain rules or laws, especially older people who've been driving and laws have changed around them but ultimately it's an attitude problem not a knowledge problem

Overhead cameras on motorways, especially ones operating at peak times are so prolific they are are un utter distraction and must cause more accidents than simply being aware of the many slip roads at those positions. Trying to crane one's neck to avoind having an unexpected camera flashing at one while similarly watching out for vehicles barging in from a slip road or exiting from the outer lane without warning is a nightmare. Nottingham to Sheffield on M1 is a prime example. It is a money spinner for government-underfunded police forces.

On Aug 1st 1986, that actually happened to me with MY blue Fiesta.. The rear anti roll bar snapped while I was driving and the rear was pivoting from side to side , as i drove along .So I had to get to a garage right away. I had to drive as slow as possible, and not get up to the speed that other Fiesta was doing.

In parts of Nottinghamshire it can be very difficult to get from A to B without using sections of Dual-Carriageway or major A roads, detours to avoid them can be very lengthy due to there being very limited places to cross the River Trent (though that's not the case in this area just outside Newark) so I can only assume that the person on the Mobility Scooter is used to driving in the area and they are taking the only route they know (though they definitely should have had their orange light on)

I wonder if that car going into the no entry saw the pedestrian's reaction had a rant about "entitled pedestrians" and the Highway code changes with absolutely no self awareness. I had something similar when I was a passenger in a car and a pedestrian walked out at a junction. My mate had a rant like that afterwards and I just had to reply "I just think he wasn't expecting you not to stop at the Stop sign". Needless to say I've politely declined further lifts from him 😂 On the subject of bad weather, if I'm out jogging I will never wear a hood. Hat, fine. Hood, never. It just restricts view way too much for crossing roads.

To be fair to the driver though, it would've helped if the pedestrian bothered to look for oncoming cars before going. Yes, the Red car has done a bad, undeniably, but pedestrians who just assume that it's safe to cross instead of checking it's safe to cross are part of a wider problem in my opinion. Also, just an observation. That clip takes place in Halstead, and those no-entry signs are useless. The poles they are on are completely bent and the signs are wonky, making it very unclear where you can and can't actually go. Coming from the town centre (the Red car's origin point), it looks like you can't go left or straight ahead, due to both no-entry signs facing different directions - when in reality going straight is a valid option. Council inaction on maintain signage only helps exacerbate problems too.

@@Perseus7567 I agree they are part of a wider problem, but it's the same one as for the red car. Not properly checking before moving off is not a pedestrian/cyclist/motorist specific problem. And not being funny, but a pedestrian shouldn't be obligated to check for motorists illegally going through no entry signs. IMO, that's just a ridiculous expectation. I don't think that you are "being fair" to the driver here, I think you're actually being unreasonably charitable. The pedestrian walking out was the smallest thing wrong with this scenario. Followed by the signage - which frankly, I think is a gross exaggeration, a driver paying a modest amount of actual attention should have spotted the literal and metaphorical warning signs. Followed of course by our dangerously inattentive driver at best, and flagrant rule breaker at worst.

Because the Highway Code reflects and provides guidance on the law, it doesn’t _make_ law. Zipper merging would have to be defined as the correct approach in statute or regulations. Besides, perfect alternate merging may not always be appropriate in the moment. The best way is to provide guidance and treat problems arising from failure to facilitate it (or obstructing it) to be given as evidence of driving without due care and attention, taken into account alongside reasons for not alternating.

The clip with the Fiesta warming the tyres up, the road is 40mph and you can see the painted speed limit on the road with a sign in the hedge at around the <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="438">7:18</a> mark It looks like suspension failure of some sort. Not sure if it is the way the video is playing for me but the rear nearside looks to be wobbling a bit. At a guess I would say shock mount failure (not nice at 64mph on a dual carriageway…trust me!) or control arm bush failure. Either way they were driving too fast for that if they are taking it to the garage. If it isn’t and they are “testing” or messing about then they are doing a poor job by going into the hedge like that

With the Ford Fiesta and the dodgy steering, I took my car to the garage on Friday and quite frankly I'm glad I did. On the way there I was fighting with the steering and it was becoming very difficult to keep it centred on the road. I later was informed that the lower control arm bushings had deteriorated and were most likely the cause of the issue. Though now the part has been replaced I'm not completely convinced it was all that was wrong. I reckon it was exaggerating another issue somewhere else since the problem has improved but not completely gone away. All I can say is it's not fighting me. I'll drive it on a long journey on Friday and then I'll be coming back with a total of 214 mile trip. I'll know by the end I'll know whether the problem has sorted itself out or not.

It looked more to me like he was doing the swerving on purpose. In one part of the clip you can see him yanking the wheel one way then the other. He is either drunk, high or just being an idiot. I once knew a pillock that would serve like that on purpose to be clever and or scare people he had in the car with him. It got so bad I ended up never getting in his car again and stopped hanging around with him. Sometime later I found out that he had crashed in a back lane, damaged another car and lost his license for a while doing the same trick. So when I saw that video it brought back those memories, as it was exactly like the stupid stunts he used to pull.....

I have no problem with people using all of the right hand lane but I do dislike drivers who race up to the last possible merge point an try to bully their way in, just to be a couple of car-lengths further down the road.

Way too fast. If the lane closure is already signalled you should be aiming to merge as soon as possible with minimal adjustment of speed & keeping a safe distance. Belt up to the end of the lane and you'll slow the traffic more to let you in, causing a bigger tailback. Doubtless they were feeling superior that others didn't know the "rule" the were exploiting as they passed several bigger gaps than the one somebody had to create specially for them.

Some of these mobility vehicles are like mini cars. The other day I was out walking and one of them shot around the corner and I had to dive out of its way.

Amazing driving from cammer in 2nd clip. Although easy to say retrospectively I'd have preferred a slow head on with the van, than a fast head on with whatever could have been on the right side of the road

Agree. And if the van had swerved back at the last moment then it would look like the cam-cars fault. I'd have braked hard and kept well left.

when I'm passing a long queue I seriously mitigate my speed. amazing how many folks forget that we're supposed to use all the room available then politely merge at the end.

I do think there needs to be a few signs where this sort of thing happens that state "USE BOTH LANES, MERGE IN TURN". But yes the guy in lane 2 was probably coming in too hot as well.

BTW, just got back from 2 weeks in Cornwall (3 generation family trip, great time had by all, hope to go back), compared to what I'm used to, Brits are dead patient. Obviously there is always the exception.

The thing about merging late to increase flow is obviously that people think you're just impatient, so I always slow down much earlier I think it's similar here in the Netherlands... a difference of 25 mph would be considered safe for an emergency vehicle driving on the hard shoulder here, so if the rest is standing still (like quite a few in the video here <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="144">2:24</a> ) then the limit should be 25 (and not 40) mph. Driving past with a 25 mph difference right before having to merge comes across as wanting to cut in line, so instead I would lightly press the brake till the difference in speed is at most 25 mph and then not press the pedals (except for the clutch if needed) till the speed difference is like 3 mph, waiting to find a gap near the end but not all the way at the end. (There were 2 viable gaps at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="148">2:28</a> and <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="151">2:31</a> . If you read the script, the ones in front from there don't want our viewer to merge and the one in between would only have allowed it if our viewer had promptly merged) I think my method does increase flow and safety as it allows for others behind me to slow gradually and follow me finding a gap cleanly. However, I do occasionally get someone moving as to say "stay back, you're cutting in line"... and I also find that some people are so impatient that they accelerate sharply once I'm halfway done merging only to cause a fuss when they merge 50-100 yards later or even crossing the markings on the road. Most do find a spot behind me in a controlled manner and most do appreciate me not whizzing past like quite a few others would

that'[s roughly the same practice I do. use the lane at about a walking pace, and settle into a gap about 4 or 5 cars back from the merge point; then merge at the appropriate point. sometimes it brings people into a merging in turn pattern, and sometimes, the rest still merge early or try to barge to the head of the line. addendum: but when I do that, the whole queue ahead of me starts moving faster, because nobody is jockeying for position at the merge point.

the only reason i would ever rag my car around like that fiesta is if I'm testing something after fixing up my car. Even then, I wouldn't do it as extreme as the fiesta, and I would do it in a safe location, away from everyone. Not right next to oncoming cars

If you look behind it looks to me as if there are parked vans on the cammers RHS. I'd suggest the van pulled out to go around these parked vehicles and did a horrific job of pulling back in.

Just a side-note. The Sponsor made me think of this, but I bought a used SAAB 93 a few years ago. it had 80k on the clock and looked in great condition. So, I grabbed it. I love SAAB and always wanted one, and yeah I know its basically a Vectra, but so what? Anyway, the dealer would only give me a 30 day warranty and on day 33 ( 3 days AFTER the warranty ran out ) it jumped into limp mode... After a lot of messing about , I got a emchanic mate to check it out and as it turns out the entire top end of the engine had to be rebuilt. He had hell tryign to get the sludge out of the engine, the swirl flaps and the ECG and the XYZ and whatever the hell else it had on it, all had to be replaced, the head had to be replaced and so much bits that he was actually telling me that I would be better off just dumping it and getting a different car. The thing is, that I had just paid £5K for this thing and I loved it. So, as I also had the wifes 206SW I was ok for a car and he took his time and rebuilt it for me... I have had many years of great driving since then and I have no intention of selling it and I will drive it until its dead. It has just done 230K and the engine is still as smooth as silk. I do however wish I had somehting like that Car Vertical as the car did in the end cost me more than it was worth, and the dealer had clearly lied to me on the sale, as they so often do! - He told me that it had had a full service and check over... it obviously did not. My friend said that the oil must have not been changed for years!

Ah yes, the good old merge in turn. Where a large number of people think it applies at normal and higher speeds so it's ok to dangerously overtake at the last minute. And the ones who don't understand what doing something "in turn" means.

This has got to be the craziest collection of clips so far. There was a fella doing 100mph on Richard Kelly drive yesterday, overtaking into oncoming traffic... He was still taking more care than some of these nutters.

Although the cammer was indeed correct to use the empty lane up to the pinch point, as Ashley's question eluded to regarding their speed, yes I felt it was rather high. And maybe that's what partly triggered some drivers at the front of the queue to " block". I tend to cruise up the empty lane at a relatively slow speed rather than rush up it.

I think that there needs to be advisory adverts on TV, Explaining that merging in turn is what you are meant to do. I honestly think that many drivers don't understand this and just think that the car in the closing lane is taking liberties. Once when me and a friend were driving back to work from Portsmouth we found our way blocked by a yacht on its side. It was blocking all 3 lanes of the motorway. I wish I had a dash cam.

I have to ask, why the aireal view of the Broadway roundabouts? I grew up exactly one mile away and went to the library every Saturday morning. I passed my motorcycle test in Crosby in June and my car test in November 1981. I started the IAM course the following year but didn't complete it as I passed my advanced driving course with the ambulance service. The police instructors who both examined for the IAM told me that I was at a higher standard after passing the course. Since then, notwithstanding the changes to the L test. I have noticed a serious decline in driving standards. Standards have dropped alongside the decline in numbers of traffic police officers. Where I currently live is a huge force area with only six traffic officers. The force probably issues far more speeding tickets per head of population than most but it uses cameras and they hide, they film across fields. Traffic police srrved multiple functions but their key one was correcting driving before an accident. Most people who are pulled over are more likely to change their behaviour if spoken to and corrected rather than prosecuted. Of course there are incidents that go to far and prosecution is the only course. That does not correct actions unless a mandatory extended test is ordered. We need to bring back effective traffic policing units in both marked and unmarked cars.

Audi seemed to think nothing wrong with that, We all have our individual weak points though - and should try to find and focus on them - rather than feeling sanctimonious watching others. Ash has helped me do that.

Hi Ashley, another very interesting video, my answer to your question about the speed of that driver is that it was not excessive!, the other traffic was moving slowly and any deviation would have been visible in time to take evasive action, it was however clearly showing some lack of consideration for those other drivers and could have provoked some adverse reaction. It must be noted that calm consideration of other road users is not conditional on their good behaviour, bad behaviour does not justify aggression and is not an excuse for dangerous driving which would have been the case for any car swerving into the path of the passing car. If it’s slow in the left lane and clear in the merge lane I don’t really go much faster than the slow traffic as you can get people pulling out without looking

i assume horses and bikes are allowed on the A1 as well as mobility scooters, and perhaps pedestrians pushing prams. Maybe there are restrictions in place. it's obviously not a bright idea for any of the aforementioned to exercise their right on a section of a1 like that, but it is sometimes an issue with these motorway type roads that are not motorway that there is not always an alternative route.

Years ago, I was driving along what was then a dual carriageway in the dark towards Defford, near Pershore, Worcestershire; in the outside lane - to stay clear of the pub car park exit; there is a bridge over the railway line to a village on the other side, where the dual carriageway ended, and the speed drops to 40 MPH. Anyway, 70mph, in the dark, came over the brow of the bridge and there is a similar guy on a mobility scooter IN the outside lane. . . To this day, I do not know how I missed him; or why he thought being there was a good idea.

Hi Ashley, I need your advise on the clip starting at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="504">8:24</a> regarding passing the nearest vehicle to the pedestrian crossing. Is it still illegal to pass/overtake the leading vehicle even if the lights are green. Looking at the Gov law, it says you must not pass in the controlled area.

You have to think logically over this. If a car at the front of the crossing had broken down, do you have to wait until it's recovered? I thought my viewer in this clip was a little fast and had to react to the pedestrian, rather than being ready for them. Just because one queue has stopped doesn't mean the other lane has to also, but show a bit more caution.

It's the difference between overtaking moving vehicles (not OK) and carefully passing stationary vehicles (OK). Pedestrians need to remember to keep checking as they cross the road, and not to rely on having the Green Man in their favour as a safety blanket. The Green Man gives priority but doesn't guarantee safety.

​@ashley_neal I would always come to a halt before passing the lead vehicle so that I can check carefully that no pedestrians are crossing. This is what the law intended when it says you must not pass the lead vehicle . It's madness to do otherwise.

I do like the second clip on how the driver reacted with the brakes and then find an escape route. It seems to be a good application of threshold braking as well as not falling victim into target fixation. As for the merge-in-turn, I think he should have reduced his speed to 30 MPH at most. The blue Fiesta that was weaving about looked like they were dealing with loose bees in the car or the driver was suffering from a severe need for a backscratch. Seriously, though, it would be a loose pinion on a steering rack (my first car I owned had a loose steering wheel and needed a steering replacement but it was not critical) or some sort of a suspension issue. If there was nothing mechanical, it could be that the driver was using his mobile phone and overreacted with the steering. But these are only speculations as the truth could be mundane or serious.
