I've witnessed two 'driverless cars' while conducting lessons over the last few years. The first, a guy was turning right into a side road, saw a car rolling towards him, and sat there sounding his horn until it hit him. (Tip: Empty cars are deaf.) With nothing behind him, he had plenty of time to reverse out of the way. Second incident, the rear of a Golf appeared gently from behind a hedge. Immediately I recognised the slow gentle movement as an empty car. (Spent too much time out and about, need to stay in more) No time to explain so gently stopped the car using the duals. Golf rolled gently across the road and rested against the opposite kerb. I knocked the house door. The woman answered the door, and surprised that her car had moved, asked, "How dit it get there?" "Gravity" was my only reply.

Many years ago… an insurance claim. “Where were you at the time of the collision?” “At my desk in the office over the road”. “Where was the driver of the other vehicle?” “Sat next to me at his desk”. Handbrake cable had expanded after a very cold morning, and released the brake. The office building had nine floors, seven of which were ground floor…

@@JohnR31415 more likely the car had a handbrake acting on disc brakes , which contract as they cool and loosen off . That is why it is vital to select an appropriate parking gear and not simply rely on a handbrake . If on a steep incline also turn the wheels so they will choc against the kerb .

I had one of those situations years ago in Glasgow ; I parked in a meter bay on a moderately steep hill . Returning to my car an hour or so later , I got in , but before I could start my car , the car in front just slowly started rolling back and came to rest on my front bumper . I waited a while , and commented to two parking wardens who came round that my time was expired but I couldn’t move because of this car . They were not interested and told me to call the police . The cops duly arrived , got the owner’s details but couldn’t reach him , but just as they were about to call the removal truck this guy appeared . When I told him what happened he just commented his handbrake was fully on ; I asked why he hadn’t parked in gear knowing his handbrake was faulty , or didn’t turn his wheels to lock against the kerb ( it’s amazing how few people know to do this ) ; however the cops did issue him a ticket , presumably for the handbrake .

@kal9001
@kal9001 2 года назад
There's NO WAY simply being on your phone makes a competent person that bad at driving. So the only explanation is they must only just barely be able to drive even with full attention. There should be a second driving test that does "real world" distracted conditions where you are asked to fiddle with the radio, eat some drive through chips from the passenger seat, reprogram a sat nav, answer a hands free call and hold a conversation, etc... while doing a 40mph hazard course. really separate out who can focus properly pay sufficient attention to the road to pass the hazard course, while having significant additional headspace to deal with other stuff. The lack of this additional capacity means you may be able to pass a test on the day, but when it gets busy, or more likely complacent, you'll lag on your observations and miss stuff you shouldn't miss, then we get into the 'if you take your eyes off the road for an instant you'll have a crash' territory, which then ends up with people who never check their mirrors or plan, because they are using their entire focus just to look in front and react.

3:01 Totally thoughtless. I don’t know about everyone else but I find dual carriageways to be much more troublesome (and sometimes scary) places to drive than motorways. Cars go nigh on as fast as they do on motorways but still treat the road like it’s a little local road with “guidelines instead of rules” and do some very casual things they’d never do on a proper motorway. Example roads I can think of include the A30 in Cornwall and the A303 in Wiltshire.

I am not so sure the BMW driver is doing anything wrong at 2:47. I always thought it good practice to give vehicles being overtaken plenty of room, ie not to pull back in the left lane close in front but to leave plenty of space. For me, based on what is shown, it is clearly the tailgating lorry behind the car that is at fault.

@MS-yy2dh

@@ashley_neal I am not sure what you mean by ‘much progress’. As far as I can tell from the video (and I know that can be misleading), it looks like the car is passing at a reasonable pace and certainly more quickly than many lorries overtake each other. In my mind, by far the most significant points here are that it is very dangerous to: 1 tailgate (especially for a lorry) and 2. cut in front of the vehicle being overtaken. Personally, I find tailgating, whether done deliberately to intimidate (which perhaps maybe the case here) or simply through ignorance of the dangers, to be one of the worst aspects of modern driving. It is certainly a cause of accidents. I may be wrong, but I think not so long ago the Department for Transport introduced a fixed-penalty offense specifically for tailgating.

As a matter of fact, as long as there's a single point in the system where something may be moving along the road that isn't connected to the network of cars (think pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and the like), the entire idea breaks. So any computer-controlled vehicle absolutely *must* be able to work correctly on its sensors alone. Communications can only ever be used to control things like traffic flow, unless we're willing to literally fence off every single road and street with motion detectors to stop traffic in case the safety perimeter gets breached.

Open to opinions. In clip 8 at 2:43 Ashley implys the BMW driver should complete their overtake and move back to the left hand land. In my opinion the BMW driver was no where near far enought infront of the lorry to move back in. I very much doubt they could see the lorry in the rear view mirror (I was taught that once you can see both headlight in the mirror you could be sure you where safe to move back over). Further, I always think you should be most of the way to creating a two second gap before pulling back in. That's 62m or 4 lorrys (3 lorrys at 50mph). Clip 19. Ah yes, our old regular favourite of merge in turn "resentment" is back! Although I've never experienced a self appointed blocker like that, it must be supremely annoying to the driver who is doing the correct thing and maximizing the road space. To me this is worse than middle lane hogging, where at least you are still able to continue your journey at more or less motorway speeds, as opposed to being deliberately brought to almost a standstill for no good reason other than misplaced resentment. In this particular video, it's also rather ironic that the blocker wanted to prevent the cam car from using Lane 2...but in the process, created an opportunity for another car in Lane 1 to undertake it and head out into Lane 2 anyway. Well, I guess you can't block both lanes at the same time!

I've had it a once or twice. On one occasion, it was a full, stationary queue in lane 1 of a DC, nothing in lane from the 1st countdown sign, 800yrds. I went along the empty lane looking for a reasonable gap, nothing. Went to the end of the lane, tried merging and it was a HGV that refused to allow me to merge. So I ended forcing my car in behind, got some agro from the guy in a Corsa, with the old, "you're pushing your way in, get to the back of the queue and wait in line for 20mins like I have" attitude.

Driverless cars :) I was fitting a reverse camera to an 8 seat mercedes mpv I had bought, one of the ones with the awful parking brake that is applied by foot and released by hand. I had it in neutral as I couldn't get the radio out with it in park. My son was in the car playing a game crawling under the seats whilst I was head under the dash, legs out the passenger door running the cables. Next thing I knew my car was rolling down my drive dragging me with it. Luckily it isn't a steep slope so I was able to stand up without getting run over and make a futile attempt to slow it down. The drivers door hit a lamp post exactly on the handle so no dent but it slammed it shut, luckily my son was fully inside the car so didn't get anything trapped by it. It rolled across the empty road, bumped into the kerb opposite and stopped. I hadn't noticed by my son had crawled to the drivers seat and, of all the knobs and levers decided to pull the parking brake release 🙈 I've always hated having kids around me when working, you have to have eyes in the back of your head and double think everything you do. Another example. My mum had parked in the local village to do some shopping. She walked around the corner and there was a car parked on double yellows right on a junction, she thought to herself what a thoughtless person to park there and carried on up the road to get in her car. When she got there she realised her car had gone. Suddenly it added up and she realised it was her car at the bottom of the hill. She was just about to get in when a policeman appeared to give her a parking ticket. She said well I didn't park it there, it must have rolled down. The policeman went to the back of the car and tried to push it, wouldn't budge, same at the front, wouldn't budge. At that moment a local shop keeper came out and explained that the car had been rolling down the hill and he had jumped in and put the hand brake on. My mum never used to lock her car so it would've been easy to do. She had had an operation on her wrist so couldn't pull the hand brake on as hard as she needed to. The policeman gave her a ticking off then let her go. Except she had to shout him back over, the hand brake had been pulled on that hard she couldn't get it off 🤣

I'm not sure they have, given statistics. But they are certainly very dangerous for pedestrians (etc.). On reflection I think that these videos show that allowing people to drive cars is pretty much like allowing people to have guns. We're just not up to the responsibility. Close roads in towns, automated driving only on motorways or A roads and a much higher cost to driving is the future. This will come, but in the mean time Ashley helps.

One thing I’m not looking forward to when I start to drive on my own for the first time is coming up to a roundabout to use an exit after 12 o’clock and a car has been to the right of me all the time and continues straight on when I want to exit. Never had it happen on my lessons but I’m guessing I will have to be patient,let them carry on and then makes sure it’s safe to exit. To me it’s a driver who hates roundabouts and sticks to the safest lane unaware of the confusion they’re causing to other road users

I encountered a not-so-futuristic driverless vehicle myself recently. In a queue of traffic when a work truck parked on the right suddenly starts edging in front of me. From the angle I was at I couldn't see there was no one in it, but there was nothing anyone could do anyway and it rolled into the rear corner of the car in front. I got out and put the truck in park (it was in neutral) while someone found the owner nearby.

I had an incident with a driverless car, mine. I parked it at the side of the road and walked twenty yards down the road to the cashpoint. When I turned round after getting my cash, my Metro was gently rolling past me. I walked round got in and drove off. The Policemen in the Panda car coming the other way were boggle eyed. I left it in gear with the wheels turned towards the kerb after that.

driverless car jokes are a blast from the past. when I was young, we'd have enough instances to be noteworthy of cars that had gone off the road and nobody in them was driving. last night's example of bad judgement was somebody walking with their back to traffic, and either right on the fog line or in the lane, wearing hide-in-the-dark colors.

Clip 14; Possibly was expecting the dashcammer to keep going and therefore started to steer towards the back of their car, ie, the gap that would then have opened up had they continued. Although, with the width of their roads, they can have some quite aggressive camber, so simply locking up (much more common in the US/Canada as ABS wasn't made compulsory until much later than the UK) could see you end up in the kerb, ditch or stationary vehicle at the side of the road very quickly, especially if you're driving on the wrong tyres. I think this was the case as after they hit the dashcammer you can see they're on full left lock.

The van overtaking the bike at about 6:00 - very much a case of 'must get in front of the cyclist', which as a cyclist myself I notice A LOT. It's even more prevalent than 'must get in front of the learner car". On the other hand, if I were that cyclist, I would have taken primary position while passing the parked cars and on the approach to the queue of traffic, and possibly stopped behind the last car in the queue. Safer for all.

That one with the removal vans prompts a suggestion for a future video: examples of how to best recover from a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time: they get into the wrong lane, they miss road markings, the traffic light or sign is hidden by a high-sided vehicle, etc. I've done it, you've done it, everyone's done it. So how about a 'best recovery' video?
@kal9001
@kal9001 2 года назад
I'd say the Blue Fiesta also probably wanted the first turn off, as they realised they just went all the way around the outside. bit of an odd one as the highway code does actually say to drive around if you miss, not sure what it says to do in the case of a multi-lane roundabout. I suppose the best thing would be to just exit, turn around up the road and have another spin, but given it seemed quite quiet on the road that day... they could have at least indicated right to show they are going around though.

Regarding Clip 5 (starting at about 1:24) - clearly what the blue car did here was incorrect. However, given that there appear to be concentric lanes marked around the roundabout, would it have made a difference if there had not been direction arrows in the lanes approaching the roundabout, ie could the blue car pass the first two and say take the third exit? Personally, I find unmarked concentric lanes like this on the roundabout (as opposed to lanes that spiral, or lanes that specify a destination) confusing, as it gives the impression that one could drive all the way around, without changing lane, by staying in the left lane.
