That's a good question. I imagine it would be nicer for the child to live in a context where lots of other people look like them. But of course police brutality is a thing.

Avoid Italy, it's not just about being mistreated, it's about having no justice or way to defend yourself either here.

Good question. From a mixed race afro-italian here is what I think : probably in the U.S. you'd have the advantage to strengthen your afro-side identity due to the presence of a prominent black community while in Italy I got "diluted" only into my white moms family culture (no communities from my father's land side here). On the other hand I've seen a lot of videos showing explicit racial confrontations in the U.S... never experienced that in Italy, yes you can find racism here but it's usually "not too loud" and this probably makes "mental survival" easier in the short term. In Italy I never had anyone questioning me while jogging across a new neighborhood or angry people getting in my face screaming that "I don't belong there"... but as long term example, I know that I wouldn't be accepted as an afro-italian politician, that would upset a relevant percentage of italians, as for each role when it comes to "representing" others....

@Em Ley I do speak Italian. If you are white, you shouldn't have a problem but you will face some type of discrimination as a person of color. Don't let that stop you from learning though.

This sounds like such a disrespectful and incredibly harmful comment to me: what do you know about her experience with racism? Years ago she was the first to say she hadn't experienced that much racism, then things worsened for black people AND she started experiencing so much more racism. I'm white and even I can tell black people face so much sexism, I've seen my share of racist acts and attacks in these months ONLY, from "simple" things like a Poste Italiane worker refusing to give a black woman her money with some flimsy excuse and then when the woman went away she bragged that she had lied because "these black c***s come into our country and steal our money!!!"... The woman was just trying to get the money she had earned working like any other person, but because she was black that woman lied. I've also seen black people being insulted on the street by racist assho***. You can't talk over black people and say their experience is not valid because you have other black friends who have a different experience. And ofc you take at face value only the experiences of those that fit your narrative, I wonder why you see fit to devalue the experiences of those black people that are reporting an increase on racism 🙄🙄🙄
