I use the canary trap, I write my address slightly different for each time I am asked when purchasing online. That way I know who is selling my address when I get junk mail.

I think they're onto me. Every time I order something, I write my address with slightly changed details, but all the people I buy from immediately catch on and I never get what I ordered!

I tried this. I changed my street address from 19 to 29 so I'll let you know how it goes! Funny enough I've got a new neighbor at 29 of my street and they have nearly the same taste as I do. It's like everything I order they do too

I'm from Germany.... Love your show! There is a not so well known Student in a town called "Jena" (its close to my birthplace) where the students of the local university invented a fake student to cash in on the "BaföG", wich is the german gouvernment support for students (similar to student loans). The fake Student was never dissmissed by the university so people thought it would be funny to take exams in his name. 15 years later the nonexistent person actually graduated from the university XD I wonder who would take the time to pass exams for somebody else! ^^

Her creator died in 2010, only leaving behind the weirdest youtube channel ever (named after Shaye) and the creepiest website ever, also named after the weird woman. For the TV show "Columbo", the character's name is "Frank Columbo." It's shown on his badge and name plaque. However, when Fred L. Worth wrote his "The Trivia Encyclopaedia", his name was written as "Philip" as a copyright trap. The game Trivial Pursuit later used it and was sued by Worth. But the case didn't go anywhere. The verdict was "The truth cannot be copyrighted."

On a side note: The picture of Jakob Maria Mierscheid was used for a fictional character named "Karl Ranseier" in the german late night show "RTL Samsatg Nacht" (think of it as a german version of Saturday Night Live) during the 1990s. They had a (parody) news segment where sometimes they announced that Karl Ranseier is dead ("Karl Ranseier ist tot"). In those announcements he always had a weird job, talent or invention, but was the most abortive person in/with it. Word plays were used to describe his life and in most cases his job, talent etc. was also the cause of his death For example (very short since most of the word plays only work in german): Karl Ranseier is dead. The most abortive cook of all time was teased for his mayo-nose since kindergarten [...] Later on he lost all his money at the roulade tables [...] He lost his life yesterday in the former capital city at a Bonn-duel. (Bonn was the capital city of west germany during the cold war)
@Brax1982
@Brax1982 9 лет назад
No, it actually seems to be the other way around. The picture of Karl Ranseier was used later on for Merscheid. The picture apparently is taken from the private photo album of Jacky Dreksler who invented the character. I was only recently thinking about Karl Ranseier and now he appears on my current favorite RU-vid channel and finally prompts me to figure out what it is all about...I had no idea about all of that Merscheid business. How cool is that? The Karl Ranseier bits are probably the only thing from that show that gained some kind of international fame. Well, Die Doofen maybe did, too. =P

Back in the pre-internet days I was on a couple of roads that on regular state maps showed as standard roads. One was across a very rural area of Eastern Oregon. The road started out as a fine two lane road, then one, then lots of pot holes, then dirt, and I am just in a regular mid-size street car. Should I turn back, no I have somewhere to be and possibly not enough gas to turn around and make it to civilization. Decided to go on, then there came wash-outs to pick through. After several miles, paved road returned and we made it. Many drivers would not have had the skill to negotiate their way through. The second time was a road that connected I-5 to the Oregon coast. It too lost it paving and became a narrow winding forest service road that I traveled in the dark at about 10MPH. Needless to say I was hours late to my destination. Several years later I read in a newspaper a family was caught in a snow storm and several of the family died. They too thought that it was just going to be a regular paved road. Neither road was marked as a "unimproved" road, which was in the key to the map. Moral of the story, even if the item is on a map, doesn't mean that the conditions of travel are going to be as you expect.

Māori is not May-Ori. Think of Chairman Mao, It's said like that. Mao-ri with an elongated a (that's what the dash above the a tells you) & a rolled r (like in Spanish; rojo, rabioso, pero, etc). Also, the Māori alphabet has no Z,X, or J. Furthermore, drums and string instruments weren't used by Māori until after the arrival of European settlers. Even now the use of drums in Māori music isn't very common. The closest thing I can think of to a percussion instrument would be poi or rako.

It's not quite a paper town, but back in the 1927, British soldiers surveying an area of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) got bored and drew a 300 ft elevation contour in the shape of an elephant on an official British Army map. It went unnoticed for some time and reappeared on several other maps years later.

I grew up near one of those. It was a joke for people in the area. We would go through the intersection where this town was supposed to be and "ooh and aw" about the "beautiful town". When in actuality it was farmland and woods. Nothing else.

A company that I worked for used canary traps to confuse the situation more than track leaks. When the information was shared, it would eventually lead to people hearing 2 or 3 different things. Then few people could not piece together the truth. Many even gave up trying.

There was a reverse trap street in my neighborhood in Philadelphia. I tried for ten years to *get* it on a map. . Labeled Fishers Lane at the north end and "I" Street at the other it has a historic stone bridge dated 1756 in the middle. For most of the 20th century it was a popular shortcut with thousands of cars a day using the tiny two lane road.The north end was recently demolished for safety reasons, making it a cul-de-sac. Ironically, Google Maps now has it listed, including the missing "I" St.

I'm reading Papertowns right now. (I'm almost done with it, highly recommend it since it's being made into a movie soon) when the book mentions the "town", the article the main character is reading says how the mapping company who made the town was about to sue another company for having the town name in their map, when it turned out that someone opened up a shop there with the name "The Agloe General Store", making it impossible for them to sue.

George P. Burdell who was enrolled every year at Georgia Institute of Technology from 1927 to 1969 (the first year in which registration was computerized which made the process harder, some students still found a way to enroll him that year and then again in 1975 and 1980, and all 3 times he was registered for every single class, over 3000 credit hours). The man behind his creation, William Edgar Smith, would take 2 tests and do 2 copies of each assignment varying the handwriting and details enough to avoid teachers discovering the ruse, and by 1930 George P. Burdell had received a Bachelor's degree He gets paged over the PA system around halftime during Georgia Tech's away games, was a board member for Mad Magazine for several years, and would have won Time's 2001 Person of the year if Time hadn't removed him from consideration (both George P. Burdell (~57% of the vote) and George P Burdell (no period after the P), were in the top 5 when Time learned of his fictional status). For a time he was listed as a production Assistant for SouthParkStudios.com, though he no longer is mentioned in their web credits. He also "flew" a B-17 Bomber during WW2 He has a fictional wife Ramona Cartwight Burdell (a similar prank that came out of the nearby women's college Agnes Scott College), and apparently a son (I just learned of this) George P. Burdell Jr. who has been listed as a proctor for a number of classes over the years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_P._Burdell

My favorite entry on things that don't actually exist? Mormon Horns... People still think that Mormons have horns, and I find it hilarious... The rumor has been found in literature dating all the way back to the 1840's, so it's not like this it's a new thing either. I find ridiculous myths and propaganda about any group of people to be humorous most of the time. Like "all Irish people are drunkards"... which is played with even by the Irish... which I think is pretty great, especially since it has an ounce of truth to it. (Still a fallacy though.)

I can't recall where I first heard about the case that's now bugging the hell out of me, but it definitely involved a copyright trapper. He or she had authored a paperback of interesting facts (like the ones people who thumb through whilst on the crapper in the pre-interweb days), and had inserted a completely bogus fact as a copyright trap. Low and behold, fucking trivial pursuit, the popular board game, included that very BS fact in their prior editions of the game. The author called them on it and took their asses to court only to lose... Poor bastard. The judge ruled that 'facts', regardless of whether they're true or complete and utter bullshit, are not copyright-able... (I think I might copyright that baller-ass word I just made up.....'copyright-able'. Oh yeah, that's all me..)

It occurs to me that the opening garbled graphic and creaky noise are kinda creepy. And that's cool. I wonder why that resonates as creepy though.

I enjoy fictitious words the most myself, like Oxford's esquivalience. I find it interesting that they can reach the point in which they are pretty much considered real.

In the kibbutzim (settlements founded on Marxist ideals in Israel) there are no streets, which often makes it somewhat of a hassle to get mail when they insist on adding a street name. One person decided to have some fun with it and give bizarre street names whenever he needed something delivered. The name that takes the cake would probably be ‘The Flip-flops of Justice Street’.

My favorite false thing is probably the Enron scandal. For anyone who doesn't know, I wont sit here and spill, but the jist is that this company called Enron started in the 80's in Texas, and after royally fucking up their finances several times, they hired a staff of accountants to successfully hide billions of dollars worth of debt for almost two decades before going entirely belly up in 2001.They had everyone pretty fooled, they were listed as one of the top ten innovative companies by professionals for many years, and had thousands of investors worldwide. I'm currently in my second semester of Marketing and heard about it, thought it fit this perfectly

I live north of Columbus but now I'm going to college in dayton. I didn't watch any football this year. Might have been a bad year to make that choice.

Funny story, PhantomAlert (a Waze competitor) is now suing Google and Waze on the basis of finding their copyright traps (fake points of interest) in Waze's POI database.
