While the Moving Pictures album was the culmination of the band's previous 7 years of work, 'Vital Signs' was an indication of where they would be going in the future.

Neil and Stewart Copeland became great friends. There is a video of Stewart speaking on their friendship and Neil's final years up to his funeral. Rush were fans of The Police and this song shows that.

Moving Pictures is their Magnum Opus,if that was the word you were thinking of . They did have successive albums afterwards ,but their fame grew even more with word of mouth of their live performances . That became their bread and butter until their retirement in 2015. Their performances were always top notch and pretty much without equal in terms of overall professionalism, theatrics ,and technical musicianship . Plus,they were always having fun and allowed the audience to participate in their fun. We will probably never see something like them again .

One of Pearts' most iconic recordings. Those 40 year-old doubles at the end of the song were way ahead of its time. The control that it takes just to reproduce that small bar of time can be difficult for many modern-day drummers, especially for single-bass players. Incredible composition.

This song was a message to the fans that the band was moving in a different direction with more experimental sounds and electronic drums. "Everybody must deviate from the norm. Everybody must elevate from the norm......" Still one of my all-time favorite songs.

The End of an Amazing A+ album. It just makes u want to listen to it again.. Thanks for the Rush week Andrew....

This is one of my favorite rush tracks ever. This and The Pass top it

I'd say Moving Pictures was more like their first album that got them exposure to a much wider audience. This was mostly due to the fact that MTV also started in 81 and they picked up a few tracks of this album. I seem to remember MTV also airing the Exit Stage Left concert video at some point, as well. The following 4 albums all got MTV and radio attention. Those albums were Signals ( Subdivisions and Countdown were singles off this album and New World Man was even a bit of a hit ), then the Grace Under Pressure album hit in 84. Singles were Distant Early Warning and, I think, Red Sector A. Power Windows was the next album. The Big Money got a lot of airplay / MTV play and Manhattan Project, too ( if I'm not mistaken ). The Hold Your Fire album that was released in 1987 may have actually had the most commercial single they ever had. That was the track Time Stand Still ( Aimee Mann sang on this track, too ). That was probably the last time they had "main stream" success. But, they were filling stadiums right up to the end of their run. Personally, I was first exposed to them by cousins who had the Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres albums. I really became a huge fan with the Permanent Waves album. I love all of the albums up to and including the Signals album. After that.... I dig tracks, but not full albums.

Thank you for Rush week Andrew! I love your reviews man. I'm a guitarist but love percussion and just love watching a good drummer. You notice the beautiful details and nuances in a performance. Keep up the great work. A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres are mind blowing. I'd love to see you delve in to those someday. 👍 This channel rocks and the people here are top notch.

Love the look right before the crazy sync snare/kick fill towards the end, when you see it on paper and think, 'I've GOT to hear this!'....Then 'OH!' when you do.

I love how this song starts with simplicity and ends up a masterpiece.

I'd be interested to watch you do the same 'Drumeo' process for their final album, Clockwork Angels, to hear whether you feel they lost anything, as they neared their 60s. In the meantime - rather than wait until 200k for the whole - perhaps, you could do Drumeo's transcription of Headless Flight (from that same album) as a taster? 🤔 😊

Just wondering if you have got into Nick Mason - a Rock God drummer? He is the ONLY member of Pink Floyd to have played on EVERY Pink Floyd album. A legend. Original member and as far as I know he's still rocking.

Hi Andrew, thank you for this! You are my new favorite Rush analyst! LOL I stumbled upon one of your earlier videos and was saddened to hear that Rush never came to New Zealand! LOL I know nothing about sheet music and I don't play any instruments but I always knew there was something special about Neil... listening to him really made me "notice" the drums in songs... and this album was my introduction to RUSH. I have been making the same facial expressions as you for 40 years! LOL I don't always understand when you talk in "music language" but I can definitely see your love and admiration for this music. Keep it up! I appreciate you!

I’m really curious to watch this reaction. Neil Peart would say RUSH had “Rockin’ F” songs, and “Fabulous Men” songs… this is definitely the latter lol. Keep up the great reactions, Andrew. The live version of Distant Early Warning is really good. Neil has a “I’m working” resting B face while playing. I giggle every time. Great guy, but VERY focused on the task at hand.

This was the first Rush song I ever learned to play back in high school. Got a book with this, Jacob’s ladder, and a few other transcribed drum parts.

Yeah, Twenty-one twelve 👍🏼 Moving Pictures was my intro to Rush when I was 13, and while I subsequently grew to love each era as I moved through their discography, MP is still my fave. Probably a bit of the “first love” syndrome there. 😂 Being a teen in the 80s, I was also a fan of The Police. Never got to see them in concert… closest I got was Sting on his Blue Turtles tour.

It’s been a great week! I was really excited for you to hear The Camera Eye and this one. They were definitely listening to the Police at the time. Reggae is a style they visit from time to time. I friggin love this outtro. I saw this album (and many others) live and it was sooo good. The bass jam was extended on stage and very very Geddy. Love this song too. On my all time fave list

Vital Signs is one of my favorite Rush tracks. It's a true hidden gem. Geddy's bass solo and Neil's fills in the outro are some of my favorite in their entire catalog. As far as the album goes, Moving Pictures is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. IMO, I'd rank it up there with Master of Puppets and OK Computer as the three best albums post 1980.

This was one of those videos when it came on, and if you were in the other room you ran to the tv and were fixated on Neil Peart’s drum fills at the end. He was the TRUTH. And it’s still gives the same reaction to this day. OMG

"Twentyone twelve" is the correct pronunciation... Moving Pictures was their most successful recording. 2112 is when their first real success started. They had some airplay with Fly By Night (from Fly By Night) and then Closer to the Heart (from A Farewell to Kings) - but their real radio airplay didn't start until Permanent Waves with The Spirit of Radio and Freewill. Moving Pictures got them their most airplay with Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and Limelight (although my favorite off that record is The Camera Eye... in my opinion... one of Geddy's best vocal performances). Thanks for your videos... very informative.

I'm going to recommend (once again, 😁), Headlong Flight off of their last studio album, Clockwork Angels. I think you will truly enjoy diving into that piece.

Electric Drums are 2 albums away on Grace Under Pressure. However, on that tour and every tour there after, Witch Hunt, along with Closer to the Heart, were moved to Electronic Drums. There is video of both from the Grace Under Pressure Tour Concert Video, from which you reacted to The Weapon.

Don’t feel too badly about not finding rush earlier. I in my early 20s had farewell to Kings album, I love that album and I should’ve gotten more involved but didn’t seem to. I’ve discovered them again in the past three years and have done deep dives. I am so amazed with that live concert that you have seen at their age and the fact that they have been playing for a couple of hours to the Cleveland audience. Simply amazing, simply genius talent, simply a band that influenced so many others quietly. I do appreciate you breaking down the actual drum music which makes me appreciate Neil even more. Check out some of the other stuff, and you’ll also come across some documentaries where some of the questions you ask, And the creativity in the studio is explained. Enjoy.

By the way. Not actually electronic drums in this song. That’s house paneling from the 70”s though I think in the album liner notes they call it out as plywood. The way I hear it, it was a remnant, a scrap of wall paneling that Neil found and started using instead of his practice pad in between recordings. It’s used here and in the intro and outro of The Camera Eye.

Great outro to both song and lp...a computerized human version of a human being...different, yet acceptable. Ties in w the electronic drum sound, and 'new wave' synth. My love for classic Rush grows! Highschool memories... Awesome special on Rush! Top notch production😎🤘🏼

ah yes a great week with a great album, hats off to terry brown rush's longtime producer. when rush did decide to change producers, they had Neil go and tell terry the news, as they used to kid "he is the new guy". what was really cool was when they used to recreate themselves as a different band just for fun, they would call themselves something different and just have a blast jamming. it didn't matter if anything came of it or not, they were just having some fun and allowed them to freely experiment or just goof off.and you still have a lot of their music to listen to, lucky you.

Another Rush to consider is Malignant Narcissism / De Slagwerker (the percussionist) from the 2007 Snakes & Arrows show in Holland. An instrumental followed by his solo. 10 minutes of perfection from 3 of the best.

Andrew, Everything you have done so far has been the "Pre-Freddy Gruber" phase of Neil. I think you would enjoy hearing how he evolved after studying with Freddy. I would suggest Animate, Driven, One Little Victory and Headlong Flight. You will get to experience a whole new level of Neil :)

You have to do "middletown dreams" this is definitely my favorite rush song. Period. Brings me goosebumps, tears wathever the mood i am, it brings me something.

On the Roll the Bones tour in 1991 they played this song and I completely lost my mind. So many great memories over the 30+ years I listend to Rush and saw them live. RIP Professor

Yeah you’re pretty much on point. All of the things you’ve said about this album is correct. Always love the drumming on this song, especially at the end. A 2112 full album deep dive would be amazing! Definitely a few surprises on that album for sure.

I like the bit about numbers. You should explain the significance of 58008 on an old LCD calculator.

Geddy was as awesome as ever on this song with his strong base lines throughout.

Please review 2112! You get Neil Peart in all his glory - he plays fast, he plays on time, he plays with the music, AND his playing adds to the music.

The thing to ‚understand‘ about Vital Signs is how it relates to the next album, which marks the beginning of the balance tilting strongly to the electronic.

Neil said he was listening to a lot of reggae during this album and The Police this track was special rhythmically to me for its influences yet all Neil Peart. I would have started the album with this and ended it with Tom Sawyer just MO... Love watching your videos...

Rush was the best. Neil made this band really kick and with diverse sound on almost every song. Neil was by far the best rock drummer. He could play anyone's work. They couldn't play his nor compose like he did.

There is a great love version of this from grace under pressure tour. So you can hear the ending rather than fade out. Great version of it.

I love this whole album, but it's really just the pinnacle of a sequence of albums in which Rush were repeatedly giving us some of the greatest music of all time. 2112 (yes, we call it twenty-one twelve), A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows are all fantastic albums. Give yourself a treat, and give 2112 a listen. It's the title track and the entire first side of the album of the same name. It's a piece in seven movements, tied together with some common themes. It's a concept, telling the story of a citizen of the Solar Federation in the year 2112 . . .

Just FYI Andy...Rush is in 3rd place behind only the Beatles and Rolling Stones for most consecutive gold/and or, platinum records. 2112 gave Rush their freedom from the record label to make the music the way they wanted, no what the label wanted. Moving Pictures is likely the most know, highest selling album. But, their final studio album, Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece and a fantastic way to call it a career!

Thanks so much for doing this, I really appreciate your perspective and it's interesting to see the drumeo bits, even for a non-musician like myself. Like someone else said, you shouldn't wait to hit 200k to do 2112. Btw, there's a Netflix special on 2112 and Moving Pictures (at least, it's available here in Canada, not sure about NZ) detailing the effects of these two seminal albums. 2112 brought Rush their freedom from record company meddling, and MP represented the greatest commercial success for the band. However, Permanent Waves is just as incredible a record as MP, imo. As for singles, here in Rush-land, at the time of release you would hear Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta & Limelight on the radio consistently, with the odd play of YYZ thrown in. At one point, I got so tired of hearing Tom Sawyer, it actually started to bug me to hear it. It was hugely overplayed here. Even nowadays, you can hear all 4 tracks of the 1st side plus the odd playing of Witch Hunt or Vital Signs on FM radio. As I think you're pointed out before, now that you've heard the album and appreciated the drum parts, you should listen to it again with an emphasis on the lyrics. Vital Signs has some amazing lyrics: "Leave out the fiction, The fact is, the friction Will only be worn by persistence. Leave out conditions, Courageous convictions will drag the dream into existence."

The entire Moving Pictures is so amazing💯... one of those LP's in which every song is excellent. Others: Rumors by Fleetmac Mac, Nature of the Beast by April Wine, Revolver by The Beatles, Appetite For Destruction by GnR, The Pretenders, Grand Illusion by Styx, Gratitude by EWF, Hotel California by The Eagles. Help me out if I've forgotten any😇.

I would agree that this is their peak and best album. It's really a perfect album imo.

Every song on this album for me is a 9 or a 10 and my favorite Rush album. Geddy Lee has also said he thinks it is their best work.

Interestingly, Vital Signs was the first single off Moving Pictures released in the UK. The Rush Reggae is awesome. Loved the variety of techniques used by Neil on Vital Signs. Thanks for a great week this was a great album to choose. I think Permanent Waves would be a great album to choose for another Rush week perhaps 200k subs. As Rush have commented. Moving Pictures would not be possible without Permanent Waves. Many fans think PW is superior to MP.

Peart loved reggae and happily employed reggae beats in several songs. My favorite example is "The Enemy Within," another part of the "Fear Cycle," from "Grace Under Pressure," their great 1984 album. It's definitely a reggae beat, but at 140 bpm. While you are right that "Moving Pictures" was the height of their commercial success, they continued to have hits throughout the 80s albums: "Signals," "Grace Under Pressure," "Power Windows," "Roll the Bones," etc. It wasn't a peak and then a valley. It was a peak and then a series of other peaks. And yes, as others here have mentioned, Peart and Stewart Copeland admired each other, and when they got to know each other, they became friends as well. Rush and the Police have a lot in common, though many of each band's fans are completely oblivious to it. Both are trios with extraordinarily accomplished musicians. Lifeson and Summers both have distinctive playing styles, with some truly original and even weird solos (that's a compliment). Both have lead singers who are bassists and have higher-register voices. Both rarely write songs about typical rock-music subjects: they aren't interested in partying or picking up girls, and Rush's "Counterparts" album is their only one that devotes multiple songs to relationships (and, Neil being Neil, his take on them is deeper and more perceptive than just about anyone's), while the Police's most famous supposed love song is actually about a deranged stalker, their second is about a delusional guy in love with a prostitute, and their third is about a teacher having or teetering on the edge of having an affair with a student. Both bands write songs about political and social issues, and their politics are closely aligned, at least once Peart grew out of his early fascination with Ayn Rand, to which he always brought a fundamental Canadian decency and empathy that was at odds with it (which he quickly realized). The main difference between Rush and the Police is that the three guys in Rush were good friends who decided early on that they would split credit and earnings equally, which makes sense. The alchemy of the whole was always greater than the sum of the parts. The three guys in the Police - well, mostly Copeland and Sting - butted heads from the beginning. Their egos got in the way, which is why Rush made nineteen studio albums and the Police made five (but what a five).

This was a really great week, thank you! I would suggest doing the same deep dive with Drumeo on Permanent Waves. Although 2112 is amazing, I would say Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves are their 2 best albums too to bottom ☺️

A timeless classic, the whole album. Some music sounds dated when you here it after many years, not this. The next three albums, Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows were also high points but quote different as they experimented with the 80s keyboard and electronic sounds. For me they went off the rails a bit after that, until their final album Clockwork Angels which I now believe is their best album ever. Love to hear your analysis of that sometime.

Lots of people say Oh, it's Rush's ode to reggae and The Police, but it's more than that. Agreed that it ends too early. I could listen to that outro for many more minutes...

Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals was a great wave of albums. Depending on your preferences people will like other albums as well because Rush evolved over time (there is only one album I don't like). I've found that my favorite has changed over time too. That is the beauty of Rush. They have music for wherever you are at in life.

My suggestion for deep diving is "Caress of steel" but I expect to get out voted. "Hemispheres", "A farewell to kings" and "fly by night" would also be badass but 1993's "Counterparts" is the album that had just been released when I think Rush became my favorite band. It was a bit of a return to form after the synth laden phase of the '80's. The problem with Rush is that each and every album is amazing, though stylistic changes may generate a preference towards this or that album, at the end of the day they never dropped the ball through the entire duration of their career. I'm happy that they are finally starting to win over the masses and get the recognition they have damn well earned.

Rush’s high point was around 40 years. Their very last song The garden is epic and the drum sounds are very booming and well done!! It has the same ending as vital signs, only different.

Moving Pictures is generally considered Rush's high point of their career, however every Rush fan will have a different top 5 albums. Personally my top 5 Rush albums are: 1. Permanent Waves 2. Moving Pictures 3. Power Windows 4. Roll the Pones 5. Signals

Moving Pictures is the Rush magnum Opus. Probably the finest prog rock album of all time.

Yup. The Police were having a huge impact on other rock bands at this time. Rush rode that wave for a couple albums more. FYI, the singles from MP were "Limelight", "Tom Sawyer", and this. This song didn't enjoy anything close to the chart success of the other two. I remember "Vital Signs" getting more airplay on the alternative rock radio station in LA than the mainstream FM rock stations. A bit too quirky for the masses, I think.
