I started listening to Haken and I've been a Dream Theater concert just before covid hit. Been Rush fan forever (I'm 55). I've been mostly playing Haken recently...and I can't play, but I can "play" clone hero.
I knew Haken last year and by far is one of the greatest surprise for me from last years. 1985 is my favorite song. I'm very happy to see you reacting the drummer performance.
You might know this already but just in case you didn't - Portnoy took Haken on tour as his band when he did the 'The Shattered Fortress' shows a while back. Must've been amazing for them!
A guy I worked with introduced me to Dream Theatre and Pain of Salvation and a few other technical prog metal type bands. Being older, I could hear what had influenced these "new" bands from my own record collection. My workmate was pretty closed minded to this idea that what he was listening to wasn't totally new. Until I played him some of my records. He then went back and got into "my old" bands while I got into his "new" bands. Haken were still learning their instruments at this point. So glad they kept at it. Love them to bits along with the rest of the new prog metal bands.
Dream Theater was basically my introduction to prog when I was in high school, and they were utterly formative in my developing my own taste in music. I love that you bring up Haken being the next-gen torchbearers of the DT vein of prog metal; that was exactly what I thought when I first discovered Haken (around The Mountain era). I think The Mountain and Affinity are just incredible, peak prog metal, and even just prog. They're huge in the prog scene, but like you, I feel like they're somehow underrated as well. Utterly incredible band.
Haken is such a great band and a discovery I'm very happy I made! Not sure how long ago I heard them first but was going to have seen them live for the first time this summer. But, well... yeah, that didn't happen... Hoping they'll be re-booked for next years festival again! Anyhow - was hoping to see a reaction/review of Anika Nilles from you. Not a metal drummer but a great drummer, nonetheless. I know I suggested "Synergy" last time I mentioned her but "Alter Ego" would do just as well. Or actually anything she's done!
Anesthetize is the best live performance and recording compared to the studio version I’ve ever seen. One of my favorite songs. Really amazing and beautiful song.
Just came here after listening haken discography. Been a huge fan of virus album then came the mountain. Their peak imo. After that i had to listen them all lol. Such a great musicians.
@@TheAsphyx666 I met Ray a couple of times. I told him not to bother playing Crystallized; I'll do it myself next time , I said. No problemo, Mr. Hearne answered. :)
Love your react videos, man! I'm a Brazilian guitarist and I listen to a lot of those bands, but never look for the drummer's video, because it kinda bores me, since I'm a total noob on drums. Your commentary totally fixes this problem, it's like watching the video with a drummer friend that knows that I'm a noob but also feels the music hahaha. Please keep this format and the good work! :D
Go for Nil by Mouth by Haken... Architect seems like a warm - up to that song. And, no. The song doesn't end there... There's another 10 minutes! And most interesting too.
Great video! Love your "reaction" videos, some of the best out there today. I'd love to see you react to Aric Improta of Night Verses. If you want something truly live, go with No.0, but his playthroughs of Copper Wasp, Vice Wave, and Earthless are all incredible as well.
Hey man, I really like your reactions, I enjoy the mix of awe and technique comments! Looking forward to other ones. If I may, I’d recommend to the check out for a video called ‘Gavin Harrison Anesthetize’. That’s the drummer of Porcupine Tree in a drum clinic. Awesome stuff.
Ray actually sometimes plays with shoes, watch 1985 nettel. Also the real Architect is quite long. I love all their albums, it feels like Ray gets better with ever album.
I didn’t know anyone knew Haken!! Haha. If you’re a prog guy you must already know about between the buried and me. Haven’t seen anyone do anything for “white walls” yet!
Yeah maybe in the near future I can expand to less drum-related stuff, you’re right! Drums are where I’m the most confortable, but maybe talking about the rest could be cool. Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh man I’ve got like 10 MP videos I want to break down haha! Just don’t know which one(s) to pick. I’m thinking if I reach 10K i’ll do a Portnoy special and react to a bunch of his videos. He is my biggest influence after all...
Pat Flanigan BRO PLEASE I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT!! He influenced me so much to come back to drums after 5 years of not touching them and its the best thing that’s ever happened to me by far. Im so grateful for all his work in DT, transatlantic, SOA, etc...
I go to a Haken album before I go to a Dream Theatre album. All respect to Dream Theatre for setting the standard but I think Haken albums are better personally
Oh man, such an great reaction/walkthroug! Please, if you have an hour, check out Haken - Visions live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MB0D4CywHyU.html
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4siaCuiteOM.html Please react to Amilcar Christofaro, a great brazilian drummer of the death/thrash metal band Torture Squad.
Great reaction and analysis! I would love to hear your opinion about this performance by Jojo Mayer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6muS5lg-9B8.html
The instrumental is awesome, but the vocals are SO boring. I wonder why prog metal bands always go with either soft vocals that sound like they're trying to put you to sleep, or pure growls and screams that give you a headache (or a combination of both). I wish more people would sing with range, power and drive in this genre. This is a big reason why Symphony X is my favorite band
