Me too. I was introduced to her when she first appeared on Johnny Carson, then was asked back a week later for another appearance. 1987 IIRC because it was before she sang at the Calgary Olympics closing ceremonies. She was definitely in her "torch and twang" phase. This was a good introduction song. I hope he goes back to some of the older ones. Now all we need is to get Lee to check out Lyle Lovett. "Church" or "I'm Not From Texas" would be good songs to start with.

Long time KD Lang fan here. And also a long time Leonard Cohen fan as well. And I've seen another version of this where it goes on longer at the end and it turns out Leonard Cohen is sitting in the front row and they have this beautiful moment together. Dude, please trust me on this. You actually have to check out Lucy Thomas doing her version of this. I think she just turned 20 and I think that's from like 3 or 4 years ago so I think she recorded it when she was 16 and now she's just exploding. And you wouldn't have to worry any about any sort of blocking or copyright stuff because she encourages reactors to react to her stuff and on some of the bigger channels, she'll even drop in and comment sometimes.

A fellow musician who knows this song far better than I do recently pointed out that it's not about what most people assume it's about. According to him (and a close listen to the lyrics seems to bear it out), it's about a love affair that crashed so hard it could only be expressed in biblical terms. Could well be; Cohen was a poetic genius whose words could be interpreted in numerous ways.

Great reaction, though I must admit I've never heard "Cohen" pronounced that way (the h is silent). But, like Leonard, I'm from Montreal, home of many, many Cohens. 😊 Leonard Cohen often used Catholic imagery in his lyrics, though not in a particularly catholic way! (And I mean Catholic, as opposed to Protestant... which, again, if you're from Montreal you know the difference.) A song from way before "Hallelujah" (1984), here is Leonard Cohen singing "Sisters of Mercy" (1967) live in London (long after both 1967 & 1984): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_NiG3BvZ0a0.htmlsi=uWl4Byh6A3LEBtsi And while KD's "Hallelujah" is wonderful, let's not forget Jennifer Warnes' incredible 1987 album of Leonard Cohen cover songs, "Famous Blue Raincoat". Keeping with the Catholic theme, here is Ms. Warnes' singing "Joan of Arc", with Leonard on backup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gtwUyDPXROQ.htmlsi=sK6w3b5UEcdmVVUa And here is the whole album: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2xJYuPtxiG0.htmlsi=JDPwKydNwWc-P7FI

This was at the "Tower of Song" Leonard Cohen tribute concert in November 2017, one year after his death. It was a very packed house at the Bell Centre in beautiful Montreal, and KD Lang's Hallelujah was one of many high points. Cohen was a poet-turned songwriter/musician/performer, his lyrics were deep and his musical talents not to be dismissed. It would take him forever to finish writing a song to his liking, he apparently toyed with some 80 different verses before completing Hallelujah. My two all-time favorite musical artists are Pink Floyd and Leonard Cohen if you can believe that. Cohen's music was somewhat uncomplicated and Floyd's was at the apex of complexity, what they shared was an ability to write lyrics that cut to the bone.

A lot of people think this is a religious song. I don't know why, it's clearly about love and sex. I mean "I remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too" compares sex to a religious experience, but that doesn't mean the song itself is religious. Anyway, you should do Cohen himself, but pick a different song maybe.

If you like incredible female voices i strongly recommend Lara Fabian singing a classic French song Je Suis Malade. Here’s a link to a live performance with subtitles: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dVvlmpo5g9k.html

She performs barefoot. It is her signature, I think.

Tim Buckley's version of this song is also transcendent. You can find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y8AWFf7EAc4.htmlsi=PRAu6lKUijVeIqYS

This song is not a church song at all nothing to do with the hallelujah you heard in church and Leonard Cohen was a Buddhist as is KD
