Totally agree with you on this band. The guttural Maori language and primal imagery really brings something to the table with these guys. I really love these bands that mix their ancient ancestral roots and customs with modern metal/rock, like Alien Weaponry, Northern Kings, The Hu Band, Heilung, Bloodywood, etc. all worth a look-see when you get a chance.

imma be that one guy and say that heilung just mixed wahtever they thought sound cool ... not dissing their music it sounds awesome but when it comes to folk metal I prefer hearing region specific stuff. Things like Manntra, Po metra crijeva, Arkona, Percival or The hu

Never heard of this band before so huge thanks. Quite interesting to hear metal in Māori, never thought that it was something I would ever do :) but considering how well the Haka matches metal it makes perfect sense.

I follow Tūranga's reels on fb. It's an interesting little window into some of the Māori culture...even following him, I hadn't listened to the band's music before now, but I'm glad I did.

I agree the music was simple but it fit the song.... but the video was amazing
@heffatheanimal2200
@heffatheanimal2200 13 дней назад
Absolutely. Especially when hearing the rest of the album, it really feels the musical simplicity is very deliberate. Which is even more wild when you realize the boys were about 15-16 when they wrote it. Hell, in this music vid I'm pretty sure they're all still under 18 😲

Bro if you're wondering why they stick their tongues out? It represents tasting your flesh after defeating you in battle and giving the ultimate insult when you exit after a good meal of your flesh

Another great reaction!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 They've been on my playlist for quite some time and what I like the most is their true commitment on showing their ancestors culture and history through their music. Their families descend directly from Maori people and the music is really good, yet simple and old school.

Hell yeah dude. It's a sad premise but an absolutely vital story that needs to be told. I agree that the music is a bit more simple, but they really have this oldschool soul to them, much like early metal before it became super technical. Great reaction! 🤘🤘

@@TheWolffAndTheMelody I checked out a few of their others, but none of them dragged me in as much as this one did. However, you would probably absolutely love "Hatupatu." It's definitely harder, more metal, and still awesomely in the Maori language.

welcome to the world of folk metal Here's my list of folk metal bands that spans all inhabited continents Diablo Huma- Equador Hiddenland- Equador Cemican- Mexico MiracleOfSound-Ireland (look up his songs Sirona, Grainn Mahoil and Tale of Cu Chullain) Alestorm- Scotland (it's pirate metal but some people count it?) Tyr- Faroe Islands Percival- Poalnd/ Pan slavic Arkona-Russia Rune-Serbia Mägo de Oz-Spain Po' Metra Crijeva- Croatia (the band name means half a meter of guts) Manntra-Croatia Brkovi- Croatia (more of a punk band but look up their song "Ovce" a MAGICAL blend of rap,metal a, punk and folk influences) Metaklapa- Croatia (This one is weird ... they do covers of metal songs in traditional Dalmatian singing style .. for example they did Aces high) Dubioza Kolektiv- Bosnia & Hertzegovina (DO NOTE! This band is called a band with no genre for a reason! they varry from Regge R&B To Folk-Metal-Punk ... compare their "Space song" and "No escape from Balkans") Arka'n Asrafokor- TOGO (also worth of note is Skinflint from Botswana but they don't ussualy have much folk elements) Al-Namrood- Saudi Arabia (They played metal when it was punishable by death... IT DON'T GET MORE HARDCORE THAN THAT!) Hassak- Kazakhstan (it's an ethno band but listen to their song Amanat and tell me it don't belong on a metal concert) The Hu- Mongolia Nine Treasures - China/Inner Mongolia DreamSpirit- China Wagakki band- Japan Nini music- Taiwan BLOODYWOOD- India Alien weaponry- New Zealand Shepherds Reign- New Zealand/Samoa

Interesting song, sad but powerful message. You wonder what these cultures could have been, left uncontaminated by European influences. Sadly that's not what they were about, explorers yes.. but eventually conquerors. I suspect it's always been this way tho, from the dawn of man. Great reaction tho brother! ❤ and ✌️

I think, as an introduction to the band, their first video/single, "Ruana te whenua" is much more powerful than this one.

This is the first song I listened by them. THe chorus is really powerful, I feel this is an awesome option as an introduction to them. But I'll have a listen to that song you just mentioned
@johntepu
@johntepu 8 месяцев назад
With all due respect, both songs are powerful for different reasons. "Tumatauenga" is the deity of man and war. "Haruru ana te whenua" is similar to an earthquake or they could be intertwined simbalism of a ground shaking strength from a 100 + war party performing a "Haka" war dance in preparation to either attack their opponents or defend themselves from invaders with advanced "Alien Weaponry" (muskets) vs "Traditional Weaponry", (clubs) as was the case in this song (true story)

I kinda forgot how incredibly awesome this band is. Bands always get a bonus point from me for singing in their native language, and hearing Maori metal is a rare treat indeed. The riff here is also just awesome. It's brutal, to the point, and does exactly what it needs to.

Thanks for your great review! The song tells a powerful story about the results of cultural contamination and imperialism. It is amazing that this level of musicianship and vocals all came from a group a guys had just emerged from a garage band status. The talent here is extraordinary, as is their dedication to preserving the Māori language and culture.

I have some of their stuff on my workout playlist. great push for picking heavy stuff up from the ground! If you like some punch I would consider to give "Black Crown Initiate - a Great Mistake" or "Black Crown Initiate - Invitation" a listen. Gutterals are brutal, but mixed with nice cleans! one of their singers is on the Hellsinger videogame too.
