Forgotten just how talented Dudley was. We are force fed so much talentless crap on tv nowadays . Big brother, the Essex program and bloody love island all shite.👍👍👍👍👍
I'm sorry but Victor Borges was much funnier and especially Hungarian rhapsody far surpass dudley in musical comedy. So uh I see similar dilution here. Does that make you feel a little less superior? I really don't feel this way but I want to try out how being an arrogant prick looking down at everything current would feel. It feels silly. And intensely stupid. Like brexit.
One has to be a master before you can fool around like that. Just like Tommy Cooper, or even Les Dawson. The overall result is not additive, it is a product of the two talents, musicianship genius and comic genius.
I am aware of two versions on this on RU-vid - this version and an earlier, somewhat blurry, black and white version. In this performance Dudley Moore allowed himself to 'play the fool', while in the earlier version he performed it much more 'seriously' and allowed the comedy of the music to shine by it's own light. Personally I believe the earlier performance was the funnier, due to Moore just allowing it to work for itself.
I agree completely. Neither the host nor the audience here is nearly as discerning, either, and that may be why he made it a broader comic performance. He 'read the crowd'. The other version, for the curious, is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GazlqD4mLvw.html
The black and white performance is a clip taken from ‘Beyond the Fringe’ recording. The serious performance adds to the satire. Unfortunately the available free uploads are not on the best definition. Here’s the full performance of the show: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qPCm6pRCSmQ.html
A really great allrounder, the likes of which is not to be found today. He and Peter Cooke were a partnership ' made in paradise'. Dudley Moore always knew where the limits were and how he could exceed them to joyous effect. Amazing.
So great to see this again. It never gets stale ~ always fresh, brilliant and surprising. What a combination of virtuosic mastery of the piano and comic genius. He and Victor Borge.
Absolutely fantastic what a great comedian and musician he surely is missed by me it's likely we'll never see another genius such as Dudley Moore (sadly) he was just brilliant 👏
I LOVED this man. What a brilliant performance. I don't think HE even knew how wonderful he was. Always wanted to meet him, I loved his smile and his voice also. Miss him SO much. 🌹
He just knocked out this old routine of his, off the wrist in three and a half minutes, on the Wogan Show one night. Fresh as a daisy. He was being interviewed about something else entirely. Dud was THAT great.
Dud is playing it entirely for laughs here. Just watch the original from "Beyond the Fringe". In the original he was also playing it for laughs, but the audience was more sophisticated then, his technique was sharper and the parody was clearer, the piece flowed better and the ending - well that was just classic Beethoven.
@@pipster1891 No, it’s not canned laughter but real and mostly inappropriate. This is from the BBC Wogan show which always had a large studio audience.
Some celebs are quite smart. Along with Moore here, Brian May the guitarist from Queen has a PhD in astrophysics(!), Dolph Lundgren has a masters in chemical engineering, and Robert Vaughn had a PhD in political science. Shaq even has a real Doctorate in Education.
I ran a bath overflowing with bubbles. That prompted me to ask Google where Dudley was today. Sadly, he died (yesterday?) I loved Arthur. I'll rewatch now.
Genius comes with a devastating price.....the vast majority of the public just laugh.....fuck that. I hope that Dudley is happy and peaceful in his next life.
No canned laughter, that was the 400 audience in the BBC Television Theatre laughing along at his performance. This was probably one of his stand out moments playing this piece on any television show. He had the audience in the palm of his hand.
