The long-awaited "first slice" of the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Restoration Project is out!
This version of the game has mythical status within the gaming community. Until the leak of the the incomplete 2001 build droped earlier this year I don't think anyone ever expected they would one day actually play this.
Playing it on the Steam Deck is weirdly cathartic. The restoration team has done an amazing job so far polishing up and adding to the introductory section of the game.

I'm running DNF 2001 through GE-Proton using my own steam controller layout. If you want to use it yourself just make sure you add the 'DukeForever.exe' found in the system folder to Steam via Desktop mode. As long as you don't rename it you should be able to find the community template in the settings as shown in the video. Make sure to copy my mouse sense in-game as well for the best results.
How to install:
1. Put your Steam Deck in desktop mode and download the first slice via the link in the description.
2. Unzip the download and put the folder somewhere you prefer.
3. via Steam add the ‘DukeForever.exe’ found in the system folder.
4. Launch Game Mode, search for DukeForever. Before you start make sure to enable Proton 7.0.5 or Proton Experimental.
5. Launch the game.

The moment you peed on the guard's, I had a nostalgic feeling of the first time I played Duke Nukem 3d. I got it for Christmas as a kid. My parents were progressive when it came to video games and movies lol.

Haha! Yeah, I also remember Duke 3D very vividly. We didn’t have a computer, but me and my friends played it secretly at a neighbourhood kid’s house while his parents were out. We played only with a keyboard, and we always got stuck at the second level of Hollywood Holocaust. But it didn’t matter to us as long as we made it to the bar to see the strippers. In fact I’m pretty sure Duke 3D introduced me to the concept of a stripper to begin with.( I was 9 years old at the time)

I see this is the restoration project but did you need the original 2001 build or is it just the project on its own?

I use Steam Link to stream the gameplay to my PC. I run OBS on that PC to capture the feed at 4k (even though the steeam deck still runs at 1280x800. it's to preserve the most quaility possible on YT)

installed your controller profile, however doesn't seem to work properly. left joystick wont move forward, only right trigger/bumper will move forward. any advice?

That’s very strange. Are you using SteamOS 3.4? You could try and see what happens when you apply the default “Keyboard and mouse” template. I based my layout on that one. If that one also doesn’t work properly it might be a software bug on your Steam Deck. If it does work correctly it might be a bug in my layout and I will try to upload a new one for you. Let me know.

Let me see if I can help. It’s important that the game is titled exactly like this in Steam: DukeForever.exe Otherwise Steam won’t give you the correct list of community inputs. (Including the uppercase D and F and the .exe)

If they released this game back in 2001 , I dont think it'll do that well when you consider Half Life 1 came out in 1998. Maybe the reception to the game will be favourable if it was released back in 2001. Who knows.

Put this next to the 1998 build of half-life and the graphics are actually far better in DNF2001, especially the texture work and overal color palette is just about as good as it gets. It’s also clear they were aiming for a level of interactivity that not even Half-Life 2 could hope to match in 2004, despite their fancy physics engine. Despite this being a mostly unfinished build, the shooting also feels 100x more satisfying than HL1 imo. Had 3DR focussed on finishing this version of the game for a holiday 2002 release it may not have been considered the very best in graphics at the time, but I believe it would have been a huge hit regardless and considered one of the last great late 90s / early 2000s shooters before CoD ruined everything. Judging by the unfinished maps you could tell they had a great amount of variety and impressive set pieces planned. If only there had been someone to keep George Broussard from wanting to implement every new shiny thing the competition was working on.
