I found this scene rather unsettling, Duke Atreides doesn't deserve this, he was a noble ruler, but lying there utterly defeated and even stripped naked in front of his enemies is such a violation of his dignity, worse still he died in tears thinking that his entire elite army has been decimated and his bloodline ended, when Paul was actually alive.
@dogguy8603
@dogguy8603 4 месяца назад
I think that why its an amazing scene. But also a final "fuck you" to the Barron. He went out fighting, he killed many harkonen before he died. Also its a great comparison between the two. The barrons men locked him in a death trap in order to save their own skin. If the Duke was threatened even if it meant certain death for them, his guards would have went in to save their Duke. Its the difference in the honor between the two groups. One follows orders out of fear, the other will die for their Duke, and for their honor

Fun fact: It's actually taken from the words of French general P. Mac Mahon, _"j'y suis, j'y reste"_ ("here I am, here I remain" in French), after he and his men captured the Russian redoubt at Malakoff in 1855, during the Crimean War (even though he later said that it was not exactly what he had uttered, but it still remained so in the popular mind). It also became the motto of the 3rd Zouave Regiment.

The Barons instincts and decision making were spot on. He called the doctor a traitor and knew it was better to get rid of him than keep him alive, his instinct to activate the shield instead of what most arrogant people would do in his position, saved his life. Everyone else in that room except the Baron believed that the Duke was nolonger a threat. Alas, the two seemingly least dangerous proved to be the most leathal people in that room. I always appreciate how the excellent SFX took a backseat to the storytelling: when the guards are closing the door after the poison is released you can see the red blob of the Baron on the table but blurry as it should be in that kind of camera focus. The editing in the conversation between the Baron and Leto is great. We see Paul and Jessica just seconds before the Baron talks about Leto's family being dead and his bloodline ending, creating an immediate sense of dramatic irony. Later, when Leto says "here I am" the film cuts back to show him in that present moment, but when he says "here I remain" it cuts back to Jessica in the tent, signaling that Leto's legacy will still live on. I love when every aspect of a film, from the music and dialogue to the editing, is used in service of the story.

He levitates over to the doctor and continues to levitate. You can see him lift the doctor up off the ground by pulling his hair. When he slices, it is deep enough to sever bone and gravity breaks the remaining tissue ans pulls the body to the floor.

i see a lot of people asking about Yueh's motivations and beliefs, so here's an explanation: Yueh recieved a much reduced role in this adaptation, he was a Suk Doctor, conditioned to never harm a person. It was thought so unbreakable, that a Suk doctor was able to operate on the Emperor himself. However, De Vries, as a twisted mentat able to do a LOT of sadistic moves, was able to do the unthinkable, when he realised that a person, even a Suk doctor, could be made to do another's bidding if one of their loved ones was held hostage. But even in the book itself it is indicated that de Vries or at least the Baron, himself was not fully aware on how they had managed to overwrite Yueh's conditioning. Now here comes the thricky part. De Vries seems to have created a necessity for Baron Harkonnen's death in Yueh's mind, however as Yueh's own conditioning prevented him from doing so by himself, De Vries' counter-conditioning pressed Yueh into a situation in which the death of Baron Harkonnen by the hands of another needed to be arranged -this other however could be none else but Duke Leto. In a way in this counter-conditioning the treason on Leto was just a by-product and the necessity of Leto's death to bring forth Baron Harkonnen's death enabled Yueh to overcome his original conditioning and commit treason. That is why he gave Paul and Jessica a way out, as a sort of pennance from his part. Also, it was stated that he pretty much assumed his wife was already dead and dedicated his life to assasinate Baron. Which in the books didn't work not thanks to Baron's shield, but due to Leto's clouded mind and vision he mistook Vries for Baron, giving Baron enough time to leave the room.

If you think about it, Yueh never actually breaks his Suk conditioning, he just figures out a workaround. For starters, he never actually kills any of the Atreides family. In terms of Paul and Jessica, he gives them an opportunity to escape, meaning he wasn't truly betraying them. And in the case of Duke Leto, he gives Leto the ability to fight back against the Harkonnens and also die on his own terms. Technically he remains loyal to the Atreides until the end. But this also just paints a cynical picture on the very concept of conditioned loyalty. It doesn't matter to him that he caused the deaths of millions, and put the family that trusted him through immense suffering, all of which ultimately for his own material gain. All that mattered is that he stayed within the arbitrary lines of "don't harm the family you're assigned to". It shows that brain washing and arbitrary rules are no substitute for legitimate moral character.

@markloggie5127
@markloggie5127 10 месяцев назад
probably just owing to the blades in Dune being made of fictional materials like 'Damasteel' and 'Plasteel.' They probably slice through bone like butter in an age where people literally outfit their bodies with kinetic energy shields. Plus it just made for a fun shot, showing Yueh discarded like an object as the Baron chucks him aside.
@shaggygoatboy1125
@shaggygoatboy1125 10 месяцев назад
@markloggie5127 I doubt it. Those hypercutting materials would make sense for battle swords, not for kitchen knives (unless you want to cut your steak, your dinner plate AND the table underneath). No, I think this is just a case of the director going for something "cool" and "gruesome", while sacrificing a bit of realism. There's no way in hell Vladimir chopped off a whole head with that tiny knife. Let alone in a single motion. He's neither strong nor wielding a lightsaber.
@kn3448
@kn3448 10 месяцев назад
It's a sci-fi movie. Things in sci-fi movies don't always make sense and they don't have to. Vlad was able to chop off Yueh's head in one stroke because he's a bad ass villain and, moreover, BECAUSE HE CAN! If you want realism, go watch some videos of ISIS or the Taliban sawing the heads off their victims. And while I'm at it, big fan of Mr Skarsgard as I am, this film was so fucking boring. Even the action scenes were boring. Most of the performances were less interesting than watching grass grow!
@shaggygoatboy1125
@shaggygoatboy1125 10 месяцев назад
@@kn3448 Sorry, but that argument ("it's fantasy, it doesn't have to make sense!") is, was and always will be unbelievably idiotic. Just because a story is set in a fantastic context, it doesn't mean you don't need coherent internal rules in order to tell it: suspension of disbelief will only work as far as your worldbuilding can hold it. Ask yourself: would it be believable to see Frodo shoot lazers from his eyes, in Lord of the Rings? No. Why? Because it's nowhere near what a humble hobbit is capable of. Would it make sense to have Harry Potter fly around in an IronMan suit rather than on a broom? No. Why? Because it's nowhere near how flight works in the wizarding world. "Fantasy" does NOT mean "we don't need to make sense". Quite the opposite: the more fantastical the premise, the stricter boundaries you're gonna need to set on it, in order to make the story believable.

@@shaggygoatboy1125solid comment. The dichotomy between yours and the one you replied to really highlights the difference between people who make a concerted effort to "get it" and those who go UHM ACKSHUALLY IT'S JUST A [insert medium of fiction]. My personal explanation is that if the baron is physically strong enough to lift a man by his hair with one hand, he has the strength and finesse to slice through...with a knife that has been sharpened to a chef's standard. lol Plus the sound when it happens: I feel like he swings, hits bone, and then the noise is him slicing through the tougher bit.

It's a shame they had to minimize Yueh for the movie. A detail I liked from the book was that almost as soon as Yueh enters the room to speak with the Baron, Yueh can already tell from his attitude and mannerisms that the Baron lied about his wife still being alive, before it was made clear in words. Yueh wasn't naive. Even if he couldn't have her back, the certainty of knowing she was really gone made him ready for his own death. And he gets some last words in the book, taunting the Baron by hinting at his secret weapon, which leaves the Baron shaken.

this perspective is so weird that I see it from so many book fans. it’s a movie, it cannot, as the 1984 version, hold your hand and tell you everything. Denis Villeneuve says as much with how he hates how unnecessarily expository too much dialogue can be. I think this movie shows us all we need to know, not more. And it does do tastefully.
