brought tears to my eyes, for what has been lost, now, we can only get a little taste, when you forget what has happened in the past, and how greed is destroying our future, if you could see and understand that, the you can see why, this project is a reminder of whats important, and whats been lost

Very Excellent video. Now that I am getting older, and more nostalgic, and life is getting shorter. I will add this to my bucket list of things to try to do in the next year or so. If one could spend a few days there just relaxing, riding the train, and doing the whole laid back 'touristy' thing I think this might be one of the best vacations I've taken. Looking forward to it, thank you for t his video.

Rode the Durango & Silverton four times now, from 1977 and the latest in 2013, it is truly one of the most scenic trips you will ever take in the U.S. Take the train up, spend the night in Silverton, and take the train back next day. Suggest staying at the Strater Hotel in Durango, the Teller House in Silverton

kasterkit also super expensive. Best to take the first train into Silverton and the last train out. You might be able to do that but not 100% certain.

Dang i just put a comment on the Texas Train ! Thats what i get for watching tv and you-tube videos, well anyway's i have been fortunate enough to have been a passenger on the D&S NG RR four times goeing to add to that count ! Awesome job guys,gals even though i am handicapped, a parapelegic i plan on takeing some kind of motorised scooter for when we get to Silverton as i was unable to get myself a few hundred feet before needing a bench, i totally forgot that i used a wheelchair years earlier ! That would have helped me on this trip . Thanks for getting all us history and beauty seekers on your train.

Russel Mack They're converting one to burn #5 fuel oil- furnace oil to some folks- and having two custom-built diesel locomotives that resemble steam locos for use in the dry season if fire risks are severe. There are no plans to remove steam. To be honest, only about 1 of us out of 100 care at all about what kind of locomotive is pulling the train.

Jonah DiGiacomo I would love to come ride the Durango to Silverton Railroad. Let me ask, does one have to have tickets ahead or can one just show up and get tickets? Is there a certain day of the week that would be less busy and less crowded trains? My father told me that my Great Uncle Tom McCarty was a steam engineer way back then. Thanks, Tom

I'll display my ignorance or just lack of memory. Years ago we overnighted in what I believe to be Durango. I remember walking out of the hotel and looking up a cliffside across the street as a train went by. Maybe my recollection is wrong but would anyone that knows of what I speak please shoot me down or help me out with a local. I realize that the question is moronic but it fits me. Thanks for your help. I hate when I can't smack my thoughts forward.

great video, it's good to see a big part of our Nation's history being kept for the most part intact. Out of curiosity though, can you explain to me when and why the old Silverton Depot building of 1882!!, was TORN down?? ty and I enjoyed the video.

Life is so fast these day that even being alive is stressful; so it's worth to spend some time away from all that, returning to a slower, gentler past that wasn't as stressful, taking it slow and steady, guided by the rails of history and travelling into the past on a steel-forged chariot pulled by a massive; powerful, fire-belching, steam snorting, regal-looking, and occasionally man-eating Dragon known around the world as the steam locomotive. May the Durango and Silverton always treat those proud Dragons with the proper respect. For if they fail to do so... It is not in a Dragon's nature to be forgiving. And if you are rough with them... they will eat you for lunch. Many an engine crew lost their lives due to disrespecting these Dragons. If you value yours... do not make their mistakes. Otherwise; you will be devoured too, and added to the death toll like so many before you.

in the past people took a pride in their work, no matter how humble, and did the best they could to give the customer something that would last, something that was repairable, now, its all, throw away products, and throw away people. the people doing this job can be proud of what their doing, without them, it would have been just another disney fad, high prices but no value, not for the customers. or the workers

I hope the new owner remains firm in NOT using "modes other than steam" because once you park those steamers for good, the tourists will stop coming.
@rescue270
@rescue270 5 лет назад
Anonymous Libertarian Mr. Harper has owned the line for over a decade, so he is not really a "new" owner anymore. He is about as firm as one can be in regard to preserving steam power on his line. He wants it to be so authentic that he has steadfastly focused on keeping all the locos coal-fired. He has had to placate the local residents by using diesel-hydraulic switchers and taking measures to minimize the fly ash from engines under steam overnight. Lately, his line has been the focus of a civil suit regarding the 416 fire that many say was started by coal cinders from one of the locomotives. He is taking further measures by converting one engine to burn furnace oil instead of coal, and adding two custom-built diesel locos made to resemble steam locos for use when fire danger is severe. Honestly, they could stick big turbodiesel engines in the tenders of all those old steamers and run them without steam and only the very few steam nuts like us would even notice. Most people are there for scenery the trip offers- not so much the historical experience. I would hate to see it happen, but I don't think ridership would suffer if they did away with steam. It might even improve, since lots of people don't like that noisy, dirty thing that I love pulling the train.
