Durango & Silverton Guard’s Eye View - Silverton to Shalona Lake

For the return trip from Silverton to Durango I placed a camera on the back of the train, by now it had started to rain and a camera anywhere else would suffer from rain drops on the lens. As it turned out the rain eased and the result way exceeded my expectations. Passengers lucky enough to see the line from the veranda at the back of the train have the best possible view of the line, the engineering achievements and the natural beauty can really be appreciated.

Hi from the U.K. I was very privileged to make this trip in May 2016. I too was in the last open carriage (on my own as it was very cold). As we left it started snowing Absolutely magical. Many thanks for the memories. I thoroughly recommend this trip.

Thank you so much for sharing this... I watched the whole thing! lol ... It was eerily reminiscent of my own afternoon trip from Silverton more than ten years earlier. It was raining just like that on the way down that afternoon, with the ghostly wisps of clouds clothing the mountains, and the river a dull ultramarine / malachite instead of the aquamarine / turquoise it had been on the way up, in the sunshine. And as we rolled south, out of the clouds, everything cleared magically. It felt at the time like I was leaving one fascinating realm of the possible to return, renewed, to reality. I was amazed at how little had changed.... and surprised by the changes. At the time there was some concern that the line would have to close down. I'm very happy to see it has survived and seems to be doing well.

Hi, this railroad is unique, there are others that are similar in some ways, but none capture the atmosphere on board the train and the awesome scenery reserved especially for Durango and Silverton passengers. The highline section of the ride is simply jaw dropping, but I don’t have to you that, because you have experienced it for yourself. I’m pleased this video rekindled special memories from you own visit 😊

The word "almost" just doesn't quite capture the experience of this trip. We did Durango-Silverton-Durango in July, 2007. To experience the High Line where one side is 400 feet above the river and you can touch the rock face only 18" from the car side on the other is captivating.

The rails from Chama to Durango were torn up in the 1960s and the right-of-way no longer really exists, so no reunion is likely.
@southernrailwayfan1338
@southernrailwayfan1338 4 года назад
OlDoinyo you can tell there once was a railroad at those spots the only part that would not be realistic is where the trace Ends 15 miles away from Durango it is very possible for it to happen as I have spent the last 5 years studying this and there are only small factors in the way like some of the bridges used on the railroad are still there but are used as roads and the 15 miles away from Durango and the biggest factor is money as it would be pricey to do this it would take millions of dollars to re build the 100 something i think miles of track So it’s possible that this could happen if we simply work are ass off to get some money and I Sure it could happen but sitting saying I hope they rebuild the line won’t help if you want it to happen it’s called get people together and raise money and I’m positive it I could happen and hard to say this but we need to do this while we can because the next generation doesn’t care for this and we won’t be able to do it so if we do it it’s got to be in the next 10 or 5 years and that’s it game over we get what we get
@vettebecker1
@vettebecker1 4 года назад
Trains and model trains productions I’m all about helping to support an initiative to rebuild the line, even donating to the cause. However, it’s a little difficult and unrealistic for me to try and start an initiative from the east coast. It would take someone local enough to the railroad with connections, that with enough backing would make a difference and oversee something like this through.

Witaj Tim! Podziwiam wtedy dzieła przyrody i dzieła człowieka. Namalowałam dla Ciebie kartę świąteczną , nie wiem czy uda mi się wkleić.

Hi, Colorado jest interesującym miejscem. Góry zawierały złoto, srebro i ołów. Na początku budowniczowie kolei kolejowych zbudowane te tory przez trudny teren bez budowy tuneli lub dużych wiaduktów. Kiedyś wąskie szyny skrajni, a następnie dolin rzecznych i kontury ziemi. Tim. Google Translate - Hi, Colorado is an interesting place. The mountains contained gold, silver and lead. The early railroad builders constructed these railroads through very difficult terrain without building tunnels or large viaducts. They used narrow gauge rails and followed river valleys and the contours of the the land. These Colorado railways are very different to Swiss railways where long tunnels and large viaducts are common. Thank-you for painting me a Christmas. Ive seen a few of these shot at an angle left or right and it seems far more dynamic as it captures the scenery and really helps in getting a good sense of scale and distance as the land objects move in relation to each other. Maybe a video on the left about 30 degrees to one side the entire way then the other side to really capture the experience.

This is a wonderful video! The scenery and picture quality are superb but most of all I love how, being at the back instead of the front, I can hear the soothing sounds of the wheels on the track without all the tinnitus inducing ringing or loud pings or even announcements that the cab view ones have. Though there is a lovely Scotland one in which an old lady sings a song about peeing. That one`s adorable.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, the view from the back of a train on the Durango and Silverton Railway is a truly memorable experience. I recorded another guards eye view video in Wales in which a lady sings about peeing on a train after our host told us where the loo was, but it said it would be appreciated if passengers could hang on until we reached a station. I am glad to see they fixed most of the track. It was in terrible shape when we rode it on June 1,2017. A lot of problems since our last ride in 2014. They had a derailment in early June near Hermosa. It is a great ride, but for me, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic is far superior. But for my wife the C&TS is too long in time. Both of the lines have really spectacular engineering like the narrow shelf above a canyon. 200+ feet down on the D&S, and try 600+ feet down into the Toltec Gorge on the C&TS. The best example of the locating engineer's art on the D&S is the series of curves between Shalona Lake and Rockwood, and on the C&TS both sides of Cumbres Pass for about 3-4 miles.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Hi, the track looked to be in good condition over most of the route. Parts of the ride were really spectacular, way above my expectations. I rode the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad the next day, another truly spectacular railroad. I am looking forward to editing the video film from that trip, hopefully over the Christmas holidays. I use Google Earth to follow the routes as I edit my videos to check on place names and other points of interest. Google Earth really gives a good view of the amazing scenery both the D&S and C&TS pass through.
@railroadman32257

We rode the C&TS two days prior to our ride on June 1 of the D&S. I have no desire to ride the D&S any more but my wife wanted the grand-daughter to see it. On June 2, we went to Mesa Verde. This year was my 3rd ride on the C&TS and God willing, May 26, 2018 will be my fourth. Check out the C&TS youtube videos by Roger Hogan (Wacky Roger), he uses a drone a lot and the results, while they do not have audio, are really spectacular.

Hi, the extra rail is to stop a derailed trained leaving the tracks completely, the wheel should remain trapped between the running rail and the extra rail preventing the train falling down an embankment or into a river.

To reduce environmental pollution, Steam Loco should be replaced by Diesel Loco

@Er.Sunil.Pedgaonkar

@@Timsvideochannel1 I didn't wrote Electric Loco because of two reasons: this line ( track) may not be electrified yet ( as seen in videos), secondly, hardly any US Co. manufactures such Electric Locos for such Narrow Gaug ( Track) & lastly, electrification of this track may be costly for railroad Co. Otherwise, Electric Loco is always better than Diesel Loco. It is interesting to note that,most of rail tracks in US have still not been electrified,they run freight trains on Diesel Locos! You may verify this fact from you tube videos about US freight trains
