Haz, my husband was gifted a dutch shepherd puppy 6 years ago. My husband travels for work and the training fell to me. I really didn't know anything about real training. I discovered incredibly quickly that I was in way over my head. Our puppy's mom was a police dog and seems very similar to Mace. I found Leerburg and Michael Ellis and they taught me enough to really hook me on training. This intense animal became my best friend. I found you next. Then Omar VonMueller. You spoke of Ivan Balabanov. Then I found Andy Krueger. I'm so thankful to you and your peers making it possible for clueless people like me to really learn. Training was expensive and time consuming to be sure but the result was the forming of an understanding and collaborative relationship with a creature as exquisite as Mace. I could not have done it without you and your peers willingness to share the expertise you have taken years to acquire. I thank you profoundly. Working on my second dog now. Malinois. My life has been changed. I will always just be an enthusiast but I want you to know that you've made a huge difference in my life.
@@bumetyanuba4231 This particular mali has been easier than the dutchie by far. The dutchie thinks the world belongs to him and his drive and commitment are 100 percent. The mali is very similar but she isn't as dominant. She is willing to negotiate. However I don't think she has the commitment of the dutchie. The dutchie is in it to win it and would never back down. He'd fight the bad guy on his own. My mali isn't like that at all. Thank you for your comment. I know every dog is different. If you have one, I'd love to hear about it.
Yeah Minnie does NOT like her nails cut. She is gentle and just mouths you and pulls her hand back, and my 17 yr old is able to cut her nails. Then again my daughter is an alpha like me… and Minnie respects us both, but definitely had chosen me to be her alpha. I agree a novice should NOT have a dutchie
I totally got your message. 8 years ago my wife and I moved to the woods. And we bought a 2-yr old Dutchie. Shortly after that we bought another one, 4-months old puppy for company of the 1st one. At that time we were building our own loghouse in the woods, which took about 5 months. We had no previous experience with dogs. The 2 dutchies enjoyed the surroundings in the woods. They were off-leash all the times, and could pllay as they wanted. After about 1 year the puppy started attacking people. We were surprised. For us at home they both were delightful dogs. But out in the woods they became life-threatening hunters. If they would hear or smell people/dogs 1/2 a mile or a mile away, they would look at each other and decide to hunt at a speed of maybe 80 miles an hour. And then you could wait for people and dogs screaming because they would be attacked. Long story short: the puppy put some people in the hospital, and the police and authorities tried to take the dogs away from us. They didn't succeed in that but we had to radically change our behavior with the dogs, which we did. It was difficult. But no real incidents happened after those horrible events. Both always on the leash and even then we avoid unnecessary confrontations. They are too strong and too explosive. We had no idea.... But we still love both dearly.

A Dutch Shepherd actually has the same behavior as the Dutch themselves. Direct and no nonsense hard work enterprising intelligent stubborn energetic (preferably wants to cycle all day hahaha) Love healthy food. don't get messed with. If you treat him right he will go through fire for you and you will have a friend for life. If you are unable to lead him, he will take over that role with all its consequences Just a dog like the country he comes from. Just pure and honest dog. Greets from the Netherlands.
A lot of people refuse to listen to reason. The same advice was given about Mals years back, and now a dog " that was once widely unknown", is becoming a backyard breeder, watered down version of what it once was. Imo, You can get a Mal or Dutch or GSD for example and with the right training and understanding, have a great dog. You're absolutely correct that most people would have no idea how to handle a dog like Mace. Kudos to you for looking out for him and just not selling him to just anyone.
@@KathgoKat that's pretty bad. Too many pro trainers are making videos featuring them and it's just not a pet for average people. People see these video and rush to get them because they are cool but can't handle them.
You were correct with your first video about the breed and are correct again with this one. Them Dutchies are not even an "acquired taste" for most people. One is either ready and able to deal with the breed's idiosyncrasies/"wonderful" Dutchie stuff or the dog is gonna own them. With the right handler Mace seems like the one friend that is a lot of fun to do stuff with: work, hike, play and just chill and shoot the breeze. Beautiful video with Mace frolicking through the snowy landscape...and of course he is gonna want to pee on everything: he is a rrrreeeeeaaalllll dog!! 💪😆 P.S.: Imma get on the "keep him" bandwagon here in the comments. I've had a Duchie for 7 years from a pup. She's absolutely the smartest dog! Loves EVERYONE! Amazing around kids ...even little ones. .. lots of energy though! And dear God the shedding!
I love my Dutch Shepherd... aggressive at first when adopted him. Now he's a big little baby, yeah is a bit protective, but not mean. Just don't make fast hand moves around me He's my boy. I'd trust him with my life

You are spot on. I have a Mal/Dutch mix of questionable background that i adopted out of foster car. Prior owner could not deal with her. It has literally become a second job taking care of this dog. Very nervy and very high drive! I spend several hours a day training and working the dog. My weekends are taken up with this dog, training, working, exercising and giving this dog the stimulation she needs. I am also lucky to have a good training facility that specializes in these kinds of dogs. I spend a lot of time and $$$$ there! Now way an average family could handle this dog. There was a time when I did not think I could handle her either but managed to learn all I could and devote the time. Now she is really a pretty good dog and will do anything i ask of her. The connection and relationship that can develop with these kinds of dogs is not like any other.
Just adopted a Dutch Shepherd (lovely tiger black/orange/white brindle), about 1.5 years old. Well behaved, and intelligent. Trains the same as my GSDs. Don't be afraid of this breed...there are good/bad in every breed. Be a consistent trainer and you will have a consistent dog.
We saw how you handled that “pivotal moment” in gage’s development. One time when he was a puppy in your house you were building some drive and he lunged at your face while barking. You grabbed him by his collar firmly looked him in the eyes and chilled him out for a split second. Those are the moments that ppl will miss.
I have three of them. It is a family affair of the training. The dogs are very much apart of the family. You are 100% correct. Having these dogs is a life style not a hobby.
I love my Malinois. She’s the second one we’ve had. Our first one lived to almost 20 years! Our new one is very much a maligator, and very energetic. We are not professionals, but I’m obsessed with her and love her to bits.. we will teach her some agility to giver her energy and outlet. But she is a great dog, and we love her very much
I have a 3 year old Dutchie who was a rescue and I have never seen a dog with a better temperment or a more perfect family pet. The athleticism and intelligence is very apparent in this breed. He's very social, incredible with kids and bonded instantly with our female Doberman. Yes, he's high energy. Every time I get up, he is itching for physical activity (he is a freak with a frisbee). He gets some physical activity daily but not a ridiculous amount. When my wife and I are ready to wind down, he is right there willing to crash with us. Maybe he's an exception but I just dont see this breed as some potential nightmare for a family with kids. I've had German Shepards and Dobermans which to me are very similar to this breed. I get the alpha dog thing but some of these people doing vids try to come across as some dog whisperer who believe you have to go hard core alpha or the animal will turn into some monster. I want my pets to be part of the family not a programmed robot. Personally, I keep it simple. Let them know who's boss but make them part of the family. Socialize them often with people and other pets. Show them love and respect and they'll make it their life's goal to please you. The loyalty of dogs is immeasurable. They'll return that love and respect tenfold and will walk through fire for you if warranted. I know my guy would.
We have a 10 month old Dutch who is the Goodest of Boys. We got him from someone who had allegedly rescued him and needed to re-home him. He was skin and bones and covered in sores from where he'd been stuffed in a cage half his life. He is the sweetest boy and a surprising cuddle bug. He's good with our small dog, they love to play and cuddle. He's good with the kids and enjoys playing with them. Not so good with the cat but practices great restraint! 😅 I have no doubt he would destroy anything that tried to harm us or die trying. He is very smart and an idiot all wrapped in a big, shedding package. Never seen anything shed like this. Ever. Anyways, I think his neglected life up until this point made him different. He's extremely laid back, will ride in a car forever. I can brush him all day, bathe him, cut his nails, etc. He's not bothered about the vacuum, lawn mower, broom, etc. And has to guard me while I potty 😅 Truthfully, though, while he is awesome, I could never think I would get that lucky twice. He is not as high energy as I've heard them to be, but he is still very active. And there is one thing he does that makes me a little unsure, but we are training him out of it: he goes into what we call "the zone". He gets hyper focused on something that he wants and will not break from it without some real work. He goes into his head or something. It's a bit scary.
So true! As a trainer as well. Ours is such a good dog. After owning other breeds like a German Shepard, Rhodesian ridgebacks, and mixed breeds. I find him as being very similar to any herding dog/ cattle dog I’ve worked with before. People like to pretend these dogs are like weapons. Only because people can (train) them to be. Sure they have energy like most breeds they require exercise.
I have male 2years old FCI pure breed. The only issue we have right now is he gets so easily excited, off leash he is golden and with a bit of e collar we handled his desires for deers, rabbits, foxes. I live in small apartment and home is golden as well. He has to be out at least 3-4hrs daily - either getting some hard work for him or just freedom in the mountains (I wish someone would pay gas, we travel a lot). The only reason why I have decided to buy dutch shepherd was because of the breeding station. Personally I think owner is best dog trainer in my country, she has 8 of them and she whispers "stop" when they are thinking to chase deer in the forest and they obey without any questions. With previous dog - she is foundling from the street (66% golden retriever, 25% german shepherd) she had many issues and this trainer fixed her and also us. Trainer also offers "repair program" which I used so far only once and trainer gave him back (I wasnt sure, she said that loud and clear if she see any bad approach from us, she will take him back). Without this trainer I would buy golden retriever and I would have very easy life now :D I fully understood how to train him few months ago and since then we are besties, the harder you are on him, the more he will love you. I will never be able to repay his first year with me (leash walking used to be problem for us). We were both nervous and pissed and we couldnt sync. I feel like masochist, but I love to do anything with him now! If anyone reads my comment before purchasing dutchie, this is for you: Just today I was about to video record how we walk in front of our house. Before I pick up my cellphone, he was walking slowly 20mins without pulling. When I start recording (2,5minute long video), he knew that I lost focus and he had "happy hour". It was still good - little to no pulling, but compare to how we walk normally, it was like 1month back. And to "repair" his behaviour it took me another 15mins. (I am no pro). Once you let him pee something, sniff something without permission you can scratch any progress you would have from the same walk (if its major violation then scratch a day sometimes even whole week). There is absolutely zero margin for error from you. You cant afford to slip one walk. Rules are rules, he loves to obey them, but once you let him break any even insignificant rule, problem will 100% come. He knows what to do, if he will do it depends on if you let him do what he wants. BTW I was struggling with my older dog to heel. Off leash no problem, on the leash it was struggle and after every 20-30m I had to correct her. After I understood dutchie. Our 1st walk was in the middle of city at 5pm - 5km long walk and she was always next to me always checking what I was doing, without single pulling, and with very minor correction from time to time (because she was walking 10-15cm more forward than she was supposed to). But to say some positives about this breed. My goal is bike joring with him, so far we only run and "ohh boy", I have never ever run this fast, for him to run with me is TOP fun he has. When he is slowing down or wanna sniff something or goes off the trail, its so easy to motivate him. No matter time, no matter mood, no matter what weather is outside, even if I cut his leg off and told him to anything with him he will be 100% in, always. I have never ever seen this behaviour before. I am in love with him and there are 9-13 wonderful years in front of us.
Dutchies are awesome dogs, and are so fun to watch work that I'm tempted to get one every time that I see them bite. However, I'm really glad I've come to my senses, cause they can be a lot of dog.
Have a 8 month old Dutch Shepard Vomkeleran On Canada. Best pet I have ever had. Breeder provided animal far beyond expectations in intelligence, ability, scent and defence aid while being a family friend. Amazing family member not just a pet.
He is absolutely right. I own a wonderful Dutchie. I have trained dogs since I was 9. As an empty nest project I decided to train a Dutchie. I spend 2-3 hours a day with her and she is an amazing dog. I tell people DO NOT GET ONE. I have never had a dog with so much drive. Most people would never be able to own her.
Wow, I really appreciate you taking the risk at putting your voice out there and stating your opinion because after two really hard hard dedicated years of my life after getting a puppy at six weeks old and having pick of the litter with a trainer next to me, I have the Dutch shepherd that I would never worn around kids and that’s all I ever wanted and emphasized in training yet so you know what man speak your truth is out there. I have had 2 Dutch Shepherds and 3 Belgian Malinois in the past. Currently I have a Dutchie and a Malinois, both 4 years old. The Mal is not a high drive Malinois but it is still way higher drive than most dogs. The Dutchie is about the same and does come from working lines right from Holland. Both are extremely smart and fiercely loyal. They are also extremely affectionate and goofy as well. The Mal can't sit still but they burn each other out pretty well on their own. I don't have kids, but my best friend is married with a child. They are over several times a week playing with the dogs. They knew the little girl when she was 3, that was 2 years ago. Now at 5, they are extremely gentle and careful around her. My point is, and from what I have seen, both are great around kids, but a Mal is so driven that just from play they could easily knock over a kid. This is not the case with the Dutchie. Even if she has the zoomies, she stops herself around kids and she won't rustle with my Mal either. Further, Dutchies do have enormous drive but they are actually much better as a protection dog in a family setting. This comes with two conditions. One is that they are brought into the home as young puppies. Adults can be fine if you absolutely know the background and how they were trained. That leads me to condition number two. They must be socialized from around 3 months on and no later than 5 months. This goes for other dogs and people. The biggest issues people have with these two breeds is their fear response if they aren't socialized. They can be fear bitters but as long as they are socialized and their boundaries are set, and it's easy to do because they are so smart, then they are the best dogs in the world. They are also the easiest dogs to screw up, and then they can be your worst nightmare.
This is also my experience with Belgian Malinois. Show line Malinois can be exelent dogs for family but only at some important conditions that the majority of people attitude and life-style can't make possible.
I say certain things about bullies and pitbulls that trigger people like crazy but is just reality. And it comes from love and experience. I applaud you so much for putting your foot down on these topics. People have this illusion that saying only positive things about a certain breed and denying flaws is gonna help their reputation but it does the opposite. And it causes world's of problems for people as well the dogs.
I have a Dutch shepherd. His siblings work on military or police. He is the toughest of the litter. The breeders are my friends and they told me "You will get a DOG. we want to know where he is". Well.....he is a headache. Now....for the average person or average family, definitely no. For a committed person and a balanced family with time to spend on him or her it's full sent, you won't find a lot of better breeds. As for balanced minds and so on.... boy, they are nowhere close. I love my Dutchie and your video is awesome.
I have a Dutch Shepherd, a rescue dog about 12 months old. I have had her for two years and I have to say, she is brilliant, awesome even. They make as good a family dog as any other if looked after properly.
I got lucky with mine. Got her about 6 months ago from a shelter. Didn't know what she was until I did some research. She's an awesome dog and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Great around young kids. They could pull her tail off and she wouldn't do anything. She sleeps in the bed with me and my wife and even gets under the covers. I love her so much
I was thinking a dutch shepherd for livestock moving on a homestead doing rotational grazing. but then I saw the price of one and I think the German shepherd is a much better choice financially and as a family pet.
Acualy Belgians Malinois show line are the best to herd and coral cattle and I use to know one who use to herd a few horses together and bring them back from grassing in a large prairie.
I guess I was one of those somewhat in disagreement with your earlier comments on Dutch Shepherds. My mother had a Dutch Shepherd (as well as a German Shepherd) close to 65 years ago. This was in fact in Holland and if Dutchies are still relatively rare today, you can imagine how rare they were in 1960. I am delighted at the slow but steadily growing interest in the Dutch Shepherd these days, and am conscious of the interest in the US possibly being vital to the growth if not survival of this absolutely unique breed if only because of the sheer size of the American market. Don't get me wrong, I love the Malinois, but the Dutch Shepherd, in my opinion, simply IS that next level. The word often used in describing Dutchies is "intense" and it's very apt. Their energy levels are most definitely next level. They're fast, sometimes scarily fast, and agile. And like you say, they're not dogs suited to just anyone.I think they can make great pets, but if you are in fact hoping to get a Dutchie, but don't know anything about them, GET SOME PROFESSIONAL HELP. Nothing wrong with that. But a baby Dutch Shepherd not getting a "proper education" can turn into something quite "difficult" if not downright dangerous. There's just no getting around that. But if you are prepared to put in the time and effort, look for advice when you think you need it, you and your dog will do just fine. I still believe and have always believed that the Dutch Shepherd is the geatest breed on the planet. Which is precisely why they need some careful handling.
I agree . My grandfather introduced me to working dogs and these are some serious dogs!!! He only imported these breed and they were great , temperamental, and extremely hi-drive.

That was abandoned at a dog park off of a Facebook post .your dog Looks almost identical to him the most like him of than anything I've seen. I did a DNA test came out as 59.2% Belgian malinois 23.4% Dutch Shepherd, 10.7% German Shepherd and 6.7 Belgian tervuren and most likely abandoned because of his behavior. He's extremely intense but one of the best dogs I've ever had. I live on 22 acres and. Take him to work everyday. He gets all the attention he'd ever need except for that 1 hour when I feed my other animals he goes freaking berserk
I ended up with a dutchie by chance not my first mid to large dog but for sure the smartest one I've ever had a bit hard headed but quick to learn I found the best way to tucker him out was to hook his favorite tug of war rope onto a small tire 🤣🤗 He goes right to sleep most times.
Agree, I love my Dutchi but they are a hand full. It takes a lot of time and patience to deal with them. However after all of that, my dog has become the best dog ever. BUT NOT for the lazy or un- experience owner.
You are spot on! I’ve had GSDs throughout my days. I currently have a solid black working line intact 2 year old GSD and I can’t imagine enjoying any other breed with higher intensity
My first GSD was gentle and calm. I spent a lot of quality time working with him. I could never handle a real working dog. I saw many working dogs in the Army, and they are a different thing all together.
@@KarmaFlight I have a GSD/Malinois mix and she's the sweetest cuddliest doggy girl out there. Sure, she loves running and chasing pigeons, but that's about it! No agression whatsoever, her mom is a purebred GSD, and very much a couch potato. It really depends on the line when it comes to the GSDs.
I had a Dutch Shepard. What people dont understand how many hrs you have to spend training. They will out smart you. You have to train it hard. When I came out to Canada from Europe and seen regular people with no training experience buying Dutch Shepard as house pets I wish them good luck. I think it would be a good idea that some breed should not sold to the public.
I have to agree with you about Duchies! I have had a beautiful sweet Dutch lady, over the last year. I will tell you that I did NOT seek this dog out. She found me. IF you have a minute, check this story out… Minnie came to me last June, 2022. I was out in the morning and running errands, and I seen her walking around the neighborhood adjacent to my neighborhood. Later that afternoon, she had made her way to my neighborhood. She came right up to me on my front porch, without my calling her to me. She sat right down next to me, her tongue hanging out. poor baby. June in North Florida is HoT. So I got her some water, and she drank and then left. I thought nothing of it, until about an hour later, she came through my back door, out on to my front porch and laid down. she stayed nest to me for the next several days. I walked her back to the neighborhood I first seen her in, and couldn't find her owner. Finally a young almost teen boy said hey you found my dog!! I was excited for them to be reunited, and albeit a little sad because she got very attached to me and I to her. But There is something about a boy and their dog that makes it all worth it… right? So off Minnie went back home… At 3 am, I was awake and looking at dogs online. Now that had this dog for almost a month, I decided my heart needed one. Here comes Minnie thundering up my front porch and jumping all over me, like HEY I FOUND YOU!!! the next day I returned Minnie, AGAIN. This went on for a week. I would come home and find her waiting on my porch, for me. Finally her owner brought me her leash and her records, and tag, and almost a year later, I am the proud owner of a beautiful Dutch Shepherd. However, she is VERY protective of those who live in my house. She does not like passerbys, or bicycles… Wheels in particular. is good with the 5 children I have around me frequently, but no I wouldn't say she would be good in any house with all children, only because dogs CAN act off of emotion and the energy in the room. These children who met Minnie, were in a controlled and calm environment, not a public dog park. not a playground. I have no doubt that Minnie wants to please me, and follow every command I give her, BUT I am VERY aware of the moments it takes me more than one command to get her to return to me. She has broken Collars due to her sheer strength! she is about 55 lbs and Let me tell you, she might as well weigh 1000 lbs, because she is extremely agile, can turn on a dime, lightning fast, SHARP teeth, and can jump 6ft from a sitting position, its like she is an accordion, how incredibly agile she is! Homeless are starting to come through my neighborhood now, and Minnie has broken her collar to chase them from up the street. She is aware of anyone approaching from any direction and more than once I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get her to break her anxiety so I could control her and I thought for sure she was going to bite. Thankfully, The MAN listened to ME. He did exactly what I told him to do, and I was able to retrieve her without incident. She was only protecting me. Later that day I was reading the local paper, and it lists all the arrests in my small community. The man who listened to my instruction is a sex offender. I have a 17 yr old daughter. I had no idea who I was interacting with. I believe my Minnie knew! Now with all that being said, My father used to train police dogs. No I am not a trainer, by any means, just an alpha female. I am seeking further training because if you know anything at all, we really don't train the dogs as much as it's the handler that is being trained, while running conditioning on the pup. Minnie has some training. She is fully housebroken, not leash trained enough, and I believe it is because her first owner thought they could handle ANY dog and I think the intent was to breed her because she is in tact. No I am not going to fix her, I would very much like her to have at least one litter before I have her spayed. I think her first owner got trainer frustration when they couldn't completely "break" Minnie, and so they ended up throwing her out of a moving car. This was witnessed by a vet tech, and she and her husband fostered Minnie for about 8 months. Rehabbing her to not be afraid of people, cars, and of course recover time from the car incident. The vet tech couldn't keep Minnie and gave her to their neighbor, as they moved away. The rest is history. Minnie was only with that young boy and his family for a couple of weeks when she found me. I am looking to buy a house in the country. I am already on the outskirt of a small town as it is, but I want some acreage and I would like about 5 dogs running around, protecting my rabbits and ducks and geese! But agreed, These are not your TYPICAL family dog. I just got lucky with Minnie, I was a broken hearted soul when she SAVED me. She chose me and my home, I had not even owned a dog in 10 years when She came into my life! I truly do not feel I would be this successful had I got her as a pup. And I intend on some further training for MYSELF before I make up my mind on her even having one litter. Anyhow, thanks for reading this far!!! and thanks for the great video!!
So interesting to read your story. Your dog sensed your nature. Isn't that something special. I would love one if these dogs......but would not consider one until i can spend all day with them
I think the key is that you have to have the commitment to BE the right owner for the dog, just as in any relationship, what you bring to it is important. Training is a skill and I think you have to be willing to try a few things with a new dog to see what works with the particular dog. You can get 6 different answers from 6 different trainers on how to handle any given situation. I'm curious what you do when one of your dogs decides to challenge you. That would be a good follow-up video.
I'm glad I didn't get one of these but now that I've trained a european(87 lean lbs) to assist me I'm considering them again since I need more protection leaning training next time. And I made training mistakes! And I learned alot! A dutchie would have been high risk for first time service training( mobility assistance). ❤❤❤
Hi I just rescued a Dutch Shepherd so what should I do when those moments occur? I did not know anything about the breed when I received her and the rescue called her a Black Lab mix. I thought she was a German Shepherd mix but I was so wrong! She is a handful and likes to get into everything!
I used to ride horses here in England with a family who had bred several generations of Austrian GSDs. They lived outside with the horses in the stables. They were big beautiful animals and trained to bark at strangers on the land but never to bite. They would walk freely out with the riders etc no problem. Very good family dogs and they didn’t really come indoors. However The semi feral stable cat for the vermin. That thing was the boss and no way could anyone ever handle it. The dogs kept well away. But they grew up with kids and horses and were brilliant pets. The bark was enough to act as an alarm for people like the postman etc but they would never bite.
Are you paying attention to the Zak George, Robert Cabral, and Ivan Balabanov conversation going on? This is going to be an interesting year for dog training without a doubt!
If the owner listens to a good trainer, and deeply participates in the training with the trainer, the owner must spend a lot of time with the dog and consistently engage and reinforce their training. Dutchies and dogs of the working class need a structured family environment, well ordered and well functioning of their family environment, I raised and Akitas which are much harder to train. A good Dutchie is a dog that needs family structured activity and he must understand his place in the pack, and the family must be trained too. Just my humble opinion. They seem to thrive on a structured family environment with clear lines of boundaries and authority. A well trained Dutchie is a happy Dutchie. I plan on getting one for a personal companion, hiking buddy, and personal protection dog, I personally want to be full hands on with my trainers and my dog.
I have 2 Dutchies, There a perfect fit for me. I have had 3, 2 of which were KNPV. people have NO IDEA. They think they are push button dogs. Not knowing how much time I have put into my Dutch. My last Boy was in the Marines with me at my last unit. He was trained as my medically assigned service dog. He was awesome!!!! He died a year ago. That Boy Saved My Life. Dutchies for Me. Not for everone that watches John Wick.
I've found a breeder in France (where I'm based), thay is breeding Dutchies for herding. They have 5 generations of working herding dogs behind them, with herding titles of course. Would you say, for a herding application, that this particular line of Dutchies would be different from the ones you are referring to? Or are they likely to have the same issues you describe? Edit: they only sell to homes where they will work as herding dogs.
As an avid Dutchie owner, i absolutely agree with you. There are most definitely not a breed for the inexperienced or anyone who isn't prepared for the lifestyle.
He is so so much like my Diesel. Not a dutchie but same kind of temperment maybe worse lol most intense dog ever huge im a 5'2 female and ive had him almost 10 years. Obedience trained him, constantly challenging me but knows not to push me too far. During the bushfires we had to evacuate. This was a problem because he hates everyone. He is not in anyway social. Only me and my female neighbour can handle or touch him. he has to be heavily sedated to go to the vet he has bitten several people including a couple of vets and nurses because they had no clue how to handle him and would not let me use my prong and what hes used to with me. They locked him up and through food through the door. He threw a male trainer into the side of his van attacked him and pulled his own muzzle off. A female trainer had to come and deal with it he just hates men with a passion. But he protected us his whole life. a few days ago he attempted to eat 2 police officers who were doing a welfair check on me because ive not been well. They were impressed they said damn i wouldnt go in that yard even with my gun im not fast enough. today he is fighting for life from an australian paralysis tick. Ive been nursing him 4 days. 6 people came to help and hes too heavy for me and my neighbour to carry to the car. even close to deaths door he bit a vet nurse who came. they cant sedate him because it would kill him right now. ive had to keep him here and nurse him and I dont know if he will make it another night. You have to think about this with this kind of extreme dog can other people help in an emergency without getting hurt. Diesel is a very extreme massive dog. he has saved me from a home invasion with no special training protected me in public and protected me from a pit bull that attacked us. Without hesitation. hes had my back all these years but the downside is He is dangerous as hell in the wrong hands. Its hard to get vet treatment and it is hard to board or evacuate unless the people really know what they are doing with these kinds of dogs. So the dog might be great for you but think about these things before getting a dog like this.
Our guy is the best. As a dog trainer as well I understand you should work all dogs. These guys pick up training so fast. He loves to chill and cuddle more than my other dogs. After exercise of course! He’s great with our family and other dog.
Nothing but common sense here. I wouldn't go beyond WGSL GSD's for myself. That's more than many can handle. Even a show GSD is not even close to a Golden Retriever. Looking forward to the book arriving!!!
i've had a dutchie...best dog for a family i've ever had...stop thinking of them as weapons first of all and change your pathetic perception of what these animals were meant to do, and you will see this is one of the best dogs a family who is dedicated to their dog, will ever own...even these so called 'trainers' ...'had one before'...everyone thinks they know something. Your understanding has to go deeper people...back to the old days...wolves...coyotes...wild dogs...understand your situation...what you need...etc...if you are willing to spend the time w/these animals and give them the attention and space they need...dutch shepherds are one of the most awesome dogs to own i have ever seen...this dude is on acid...
at first I heard "they're not great family dogs" but when I continued listening you went into that it's not good for the average family. I disagree however that most training they need is illegal in western europe, it is still a shepherd that is useable in a wide range of stuff. However I definitely agree that they have to be trained, they're big agile dogs with a strong protection drive! My dutchies always get very protective when someone they don't know enters the house, until we tell them its okay which makes them calm down. It is just a breed that definitely needs to know it's boundaries or else it is going to go wrong.
I seem to have the laziest Dutchie in the world. I turf him out of our bedroom at about 10am to go and do a wee. I wonder if there are 2 strains? He also has a massive ruff/ hackles, that have gone flat now he is 5yo. Is that common? We love him and he has always been hugely protective of my children ( sits on the bathroom floor watching them in the bath) and jumps in the pool if he manages to push his way past the gate and tries to push children to the edge. I can load a photo. He is completely Dutch looking and huge.
You have a very good point, that Is what they are one of the most use dogs in Advance militar programs as KNPV also in Norway and other countries in the North of Europe still training as the KNPV 😅😅, They are not for all kind of person they need a lot of work of the handler and with the dog 😅😅!!!
Coming from a knpv trainer and breeder. I agree that these dogs are not for everyone. Current laws and demand are changing the breed ever so slightly. But different lines are for different uses. These dogs are a lifestyle, whatever the line is. Good luck training everybody
I agree with the whole family thing my Dutch is way too high energy at times for little kids I think but that translate in him being a great hunting dog. I don’t use my dogs for personal protection. That’s what my second amendments for but I love the hunt so I rescued this puppy I trained it for hunting and she’s damn fucking good at it but I’m single 24 year-old male that lives alone with one other dog so for me it works out good because I also live on a ranch so the dogs constantly has acres and acres to piss off with and gets worked 5 to 6 hours a day
When your dog gets nervous you have to have the attitude like a cop with kids getting out of hand," Hey!" And when you get them to look at you you tell him to chill out and then become mentally as relaxed as if you were chilling by the pool while staying focused on him like you are telling him the emotion inside you. Imagine the relaxed way of being mixed with the feeling of "you better chill, or u r in trouble".
how can you make people upset? Everybody who really loves dutchies wants to learn new things - i have now my third dutchy rescue - as a family dog, yes there is some handler aggression, but once they are confident it´s over. Sad that so many non professionals mistake consequence for harsh treatment - this breed has a strong sense for unfairness and fairness - rough is never a problem, unfair and violent they will never forget and never forgive - they absolute unique individual personalities. They enjoy love, but the demand respect, they give absolute loyalty
Good video I'm 62 had many big dogs german shepherd/Doberman I got from a guy that lived in an apartment, and he bought it from a gaurd duty type of breeder and he was a had full. ,I want one ,I'm retired and can devote 24/7 for a dog.
I 💯 Agree!!! That's why we have many options when it comes to choosing what dog matches our lifestyle 🙋👏 guess it is Knowledge is what we are missing here that's why people trying to throw tantrums at you 😅✌️
sadly, it's not a very uncommon breed says it all... EDIT: Actually I was about to buy one before I saw your video then I got a nice labrador instead and I will probably get a Belgian Malanois when the lab is old enough. Thank you for you content.
You know what can be scary about these dogs is that if you had to go out of town and couldn’t bring your dog with you, you need to board them with a kennel that has worked with dutchies. The reason is because they prefer ONE handler. Some will ONLY listen to their handler, period! Most are not taking these possibilities into consideration when getting one. My minnie is extremely attached to me and goes through separation anxiety if I am in my yard and she is inside. If I leave over night and she is with my daughter, she paces until I come home. She will not allow anyone into my home if I am not there, not even my daughters friends. I am very happy with this. Lol and my daughter knows NOT to even risk it. I’m just glad I educated myself to this breed when she chose me! I couldn’t be happier!!
@Shield K9 Dog Training Man this video was prophetic. Ended up destroying his handlers arm. What I have learned is everybody is an expert and nobody wants to admit they can't handle what they want. Great video though most of these yahoo's will not heed your advice.
I don’t have a Dutch shepherd I have a blue bay shepherd and he is trained amazingly but I don’t like telling people what he is because they always say oh I want one they are so well behaved. It’s like no mine is well behaved because I train him and give him what he needs they aren’t for average people trust me you don’t need one and they get mad. It’s to the point I don’t like telling people why breed he is and say idk just a mutt
I’m kinda going through this with my 5 month old Mal pup. I have done extensive research on the breed for a couple years. I live by myself, in an apartment and have had 2 occurrences of someone trying to break in which led me to getting my Mal. As far as obedience, I literally do all the training myself. He knows to sit and stay on command as his recall is not the best however he’s only 5 months and it will get better over time as long as I continue to work with him. People, always ask me his breed and I have grown tired of telling people because of how popular the breed has become. Don’t get me wrong, I love that this breed is getting the recognition it deserves BUT people see my Mal and just think they are easy to train and deal with when I’m reality you have to literally spend the time with them to get them to be well behaved.
So I worked shortly with a guy who had a Dutchy. One day he thought it'd be a good idea to correct the dog on a prong collar with no leash just used his hands. Needless to say the dog bit the @#$& out of him 🤦♂️. He's a fan of this channel so here's hoping he sees this lol
I think you’re spot on regarding your opinions on the suitability as a pet and definitely never to an inexperienced person. It will go wrong in most cases and the animal gets put down.
is it correct that a Dutchie more calm as a Malligator? And what are the big diference between Working line german sheperd and the Dutchie. I have a Australian cattle dog and look for a guardian / proteccion companion. i walk 10-15km a day.
