There was more power in the first three side kicks evident by the dent of the bag, than the one lee advocated. Lewis lost momentum when doing the fuller extention. The bigger movement of the bag going back is just his leg pushing forward.

What a stand up guy Joe was to take the time to put this together to let us have an inside look into Bruce’s world and how he taught world class fighters. Oh Bruce was much more than a movie star. I’d say he was a combat fighter who happened to do movies on the side.
Movies were his main source of income, so it's more likely he may have been a combat fighter on the side, although we have almost no knowledge of any combat he allegedly took part in.
@Rory Braxton I didn't say he had no combat knowledge, I said WE have no knowledge of combat he took part in (i.e. we have not seen a real fight of his) We have heard some anecdotal stories, but the kids he fought with in Hong Kong are unproven fighters and we don't know their names.

This was awesome. It shows how Bruce Lee was in fact training some high level martial artists who had already established themselves. Not by old systems but by principles and processes rooted and tested as much as possible for real combat so they could incorporate that into their own style. It was very enlightening how Joe Lewis shows us exactly that evolution of what he learned from Bruce and what he did with it. Amazing to see this. I like his self deprecating reference to his side kick. What can you show me Bruce? Hahaha ...apparently a lot!!!! It's good of Joe to give Bruce his props and I am sure Bruce had great respect for Joe as well and learned a number of things from him. I know Joe competed but Bruce was more about the art of fighting and not the sport of fighting. For all the crap written about Bruce just being an actor etc. one just has to watch this and know that Joe Lewis would not have wasted all his time training with Bruce if he was just that. Now I know what Bruce meant when he said be like water. The transfer of energy from your body. Speed, power and deceptiveness. That is a lethal combination.
@@markross7385 Sometimes fame and attention can inflate ones ego. I like what Joe said about Bruce when he met him the 1st 2 times. He was very humble and respectful and that was after he had some success on the Green Hornet. Tarantino's movie portrayal of Bruce is utter nonsense when you hear Joe speak of how Bruce was. Maybe he should have used a Chuck Norris reference in his movie!! hahahha
I would not believe all that joe says a out bruce because he said they never sparred but a woman who was at the karate tournament said they sparred and Joe could not touch him and said he was so fast.

@@markross7385 Yep, and of course as chucky says he taught Bruce high kicks lol. Joe became a world champion in full contact in the PKA after his world championships in point. Chuck tried full contact verses touch point fighting....let's just say, it did not work out for him.
Very rare insight into top level training by Bruce Lee. Even at Joe's level, it took him 14 months of continuous training to get his techniques at a comfortable level! Wow! A rare gem for training!

Joe was always funny and you felt his huge power. Timing, broken rhythm.. He dominated. Because of Joe I also trained directly with Kenpo Master Ed Parker for over 10 years until he passed. So much info. Salute.
His record after training with Bruce was insane. He absorbed the teaching. He was almost unbeatable when you research his record after training with Lee.
And he did in full contact where as most the guys from his era were doing point karate. Lewis wanted to do full contact after training with Lee. You can even see Lewis move a lot like Lee did in the movies, especially with his footwork. It's almost a mirror image when you see Lewis fight during that era.
Great to watch and listen to Joe talk so passionately about his time with Bruce and his real art. Jeet Kune Do is far more than a mere philosophy. Thanks for sharing.
Bruce Lee was a researcher of scrutinizing Martial Arts moves, on paper, or by discussion. Joe Lewis, on the other hand was a master of basic techniques ,that he learn from masters, and put them to use in physical combat, winning him his honor and recognition as a real fighter, but there is a difference between the two . A real fighter may be surprised in a fight , hurt or dazed , but his fighting experience keeps him in the game till it’s over . A philosopher of martial arts has never been pushed to the limit or injured to have to come back another day to fight . A philosopher, will never know what it’s like to achieve mastery as a fighter in real a fight , fighting a per as good as of better than himself .and his concepts though they make sense will still categorize him as a scientist of martial arts techniques, but not a fighter . A fighter may lose some times , but his heart is a such he will fight again . Bruce protected what heart he had by doing exhibition, in stead of showing , Vic Moore , joe Lewis , Mike stone chuck Norris , that he was capable of beating anyone of them , by fighting them publicly. Joe Lewis was his prized student. Personally, I think Bruce Lee would have done just about anything to have the physicality of joe. Bruce Lee did most of his adult life at 124-140 lbs. joe Lewis was the quintessential light heavy weight. If Bruce could have walked around at 195-205, he'd have been (more) unbeatable. Shifu Bruce incorporates close contact attack by using wing chun as called the way of intercepting Fist. Then utilized his lightning speed power using his kicking prowess to annihilate his opponent then you're done with a blink of an eye. That's how deadly Bruce can attack you if he intended.
The kick seems practical. Especially towards the liver. The sticky hand stuff is something Bruce gave up over time. Maybe practical for a close move in strike but not for continuous fighting. One of the reasons Bruce started to get over it. Wasn’t practical for most cases
@@Awakenedmind333whoever told you Bruce ever gave up on sticky hands/trapping? It's VERY effective to remove an opponent's block/parrying hand in close quarter encounters.
@@jovanleon7 it’s true that he started to place less emphasis on the wing Chun dynamics. Being so linear was undesirable. That’s why in some of his books he mainly emphasizes kicks as actual self defense. It’s just trapping is very niche and requires more training. That same energy and time for training can be used on honing techniques to a more efficient rate that’s used more generally. This isn’t to discredit trapping, just understanding practical martial engagement.
