@@tomtheplummer7322 I live about 100 miles from Nashville but what does that have to do with anything? I just don't like country. I like metal and grunge. Dwight Yoakam remained focused on his music and acting and didn't let the pitfalls of fame distract him from that. Subsequently, he has a terrific expansive body of work and still has his health. Rick James expressed regret that he didn't produce enough music because he was derailed by drugs and sex and it destroyed his health too.

If Dwight Yoakam "exploded on the scene" after nine years, then I guess you could say he had a "slow burning fuse"!😊 He's definitely got that, "something special" that makes s super star. His music transcends several genres of music from rock, pop and country which some from every generation can appreciate and enjoy. His acting credits are a bonus, he's quite convincing. He gives a good open and honest interview of who he is and where he's been in his rise to his "15 minutes of fame! "

Dwight is a real artist, he always has been. Real artists always draw fans from all genres of music because they do something out of the ordinary. Dwight's songs the have lyrical complexity that's been missing in Nashville country since the late 60s. Dwight makes music for grown-ups. I love the guy, to me he's right there with Buck, Rodger Miller, Glen Campbell, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Ray Price, Merle Haggard etc etc. He's top shelf.

@Figment of my own Imagination "Haggard told The Boot that he wrote the song after he became disheartened watching Vietnam War protests and incorporated that emotion and viewpoint into song. Haggard says, "When I was in prison, I knew what it was like to have freedom taken away. Freedom is everything. During Vietnam, there were all kinds of protests. Here were these [servicemen] going over there and dying for a cause-we don't even know what it was really all about. And here are these young kids, that were free, bitching about it. There's something wrong with that and with [disparaging] those poor guys." He states that he wrote the song to support the troops. "We were in a wonderful time in America, and music was in a wonderful place. America was at its peak, and what the hell did these kids have to complain about? These soldiers were giving up their freedom and lives to make sure others could stay free. I wrote the song to support those soldiers."

Dwight and others during the 80’s early 90’s made country music something I would enjoy listening too. The older country music had its time and place but that era was getting dragged around and beaten up for every penny it could squeeze out. It’s time had come. Now country music has turned into absolute 💩. Every singer sounds the same and the songs are horribly boring. That’s Dwight for giving us something fun to listen to.

I'll always reject the notion of "Okie" being written as tongue in cheek. Listen to Merle talk about the song in the live recording from 1969 in Muskogee. I know that's what he said later in life, when pressed by Dan. Maybe he didn't like what it became to some, but he wrote that song like he wrote all the others: from his heart. But, old Dan was happy to hear Dwight say that...
