IDK, I would think it depends on pricing. If you have a weapon that this works well enough in, and it's significantly less expensive than the competition, it should be a good choice. After all, on the meat target, it did the job. But if price isn't an issue (as in, it's not hugely cheaper or you have plenty to spend on ammo), then yeah, I'd just get the PBR.

Considering the 55gr DRT is the same physical size as a 68gr lead core, the twist plays a more significant role. We’ve used them for years on deer, they are accurate and deadly. I can shoot 10 round groups at a hundred yards all day long that you can put three fingers over.

The Ruger's 1:9 twist rate is most likely better suited to the projectile than the A1's 1:12 rate. My understanding of what DRT is is that it uses a "powdered core" technology to increase performance, but this may also mean it is a longer projectile that is too long to correctly stabilize in 1:12. Would be interesting to see how it shoots from 1:7 to 1:9 for comparison.
@crspang
@crspang Год назад
I was wondering the same thing. The twist rate has to be a factor, does it not?
@MarkiusFox
@MarkiusFox Год назад
That "powdered core" could also lead to poor stability and consistency in slower twist rates, depending on how well that core material is distributed in the projectile. EDIT: Looking at their website and specifically the projectiles they have available which are likely also used in their ammo offerings, it is a very long projectile for its weight.
@alphahotel3446

Many years ago, a friend's girlfriend's dad worked at the British Eley ammuntion factory. After a successful "cheeky ask" I was delighted to get a personal tour of the factory where rimfire ammunition, including Tenex was made. Every ammo batch was tested for accuracy at 100 yards on an indoor range, using two BSA Martini International rifles and two Anschutz Match 54 rifles. They told me that they wanted to represent the kit that their customers would be using in top tier matches. (I wonder if they swapped out the BSAs for Walthers later on?) They also said that Tenex was made on a dedicated line with the best tooling and most QA. So, if they ever made a bad batch of Tenex, it might be sold off as a less prestigious brand, but a really good batch from their other production lines would never be sold as Tenex. Hence, batches of Eley Match could be every bit as good as Tenex... but serious marksmen tended to buy Tenex to be assured of the very best (always assuming that they preferred Eley products to those form other manufacturers).

Due to DRT bullet construction, they are quite a bit longer than typical 55gr FMJ bullets. That a1 platform has a 1-12 twist and may not have been able to stabilize the longer bullet. It could be worth a try to run those through a barrel with a 1-9 twist rate.

I can’t speak much to other calibers but in my experience Winchester white box 556 (not the 223 shown in the video as Paul mentioned) is the best m193 you can buy at reasonable prices. I consistently get 3250-3310 fps out of 20 inch a1 rifle. As far as grouping size I usually get between 1.5-3 moa.

Another reason to always check the performance of the bullet to gun. I also would like to see if a faster twist rate like a 1:7 would stabilize the round better. As soon as I saw the mini 14 shoot better than an AR I knew it had to have a different twist rate. This sounds like it might be a good home defense round... I wonder what it would do in a wall penetration test, if it truly frangible.
@pville_piper5125
@pville_piper5125 Год назад
It's designed to penetrate a hard target and expand on a soft target. The gel tests are pretty interesting, they also have a 79 grain bullet as well. Saw an article on it being used on a hog hunt, hit it from the front of the skull, penetrated the skull and dropped it in its tracks.
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS Год назад
Agreed. I think most modern 556 is going to be developed around the most common AR. For more than a decade that's been an M4 ish thing in 1-7 or 1-8. I don't have data to prove this, but i think the number of AR 15s sold recently completely dwarf the number of ARs from prior to 2010 or so. Slow twist ARs are comparatively uncommon now despite being the standard for most of Mr Harrell's life. I think this is one case where his sense of 'typical' needs adjustment.

I shoot a lot of DRT 223, they are accurate and deadly. All DRT 223 rounds are the same physical size of a 68gr lead core. The weight difference is determined by type of powder core. 55gr are copper and the 72gr is tungsten. If you reload a 55gr DRT as a 55gr, the pressure spike would be off the chart.

To be fair to this ammo, it seems like it's more targeted towards home defense with modern 1:7" barrels judging from how much better it did with the Ruger's 1:9"(?) barrel. The powder used might even be designed to burn better in a 16"~ and it might still get that same velocity which wouldn't be too bad with that length. In a use case where overpenetration is a concern with your more modern rifle something like this or low weight, high velocity varmint ammo might be something to consider.

Dynamic Research Technologies ammo is filled with a ballistic powder. They are designed to break apart when hitting a hard target. Non penetrating. On soft targets it was designed to break apart and cause a large wound cavity without over penetration. There is a video online where someone takes down a Nilgi on a ranch in Texas with one .223 DRT round. When they opened it up the space behind the entrance hole looked like jello. The concept is interesting. Although at 100yds apparently not that accurate.

I was curious about this also. I had a Model 70 with a 1:12 twist that was iffy at best with 55 grain, but would shoot most 50 grain or less pretty well. Anything over 55 grain looked like the first group Paul shot. IDK, I sure don't have his experience or skill set.

@@bulldog6390 yes, But. the A1 was designed for 55gr bullets. i expected much, much better from the A1, it should print 1-2"diameter at 100yrds all day long, with a good trigger.

@@orbitalair2103 These bullets are pretty long for their weight though, and apparently 1:12 is not listed as one of the suggested ones on their website. Not that it looked great with the 1:9 barrel on the Ruger.

@orbitalair2103 bullet weight isn't really the factor at issue. The bullet velocity is. They're moving so slow that the twist rate isn't providing enough spin for stabilization. The bullets could be lighter and would probably fair no better. The velocities he was quoting for those rounds sounded like comparing .380 to 9mm.

An impressive and thorough test with a very clear conclusion. Obviously the manufacturer has some self examination to perform.
