Hey what's up internet. So, i got this Dyson 33 from our pile in the building where people leave their freebies. Guess what, its broken. It won’t turn on. Not to fear! Ive done some serious surgery on vacuums in my day that resulted in a second life for many of them. Is your vacuum broken too? Im going to try to help you and show you how i fixed this vacuum.
This is the second vacuum that i have repaired using this same fix so this is likely to be your problem as well. Im partial to finding broken switches on electronics and looked at the switch however found nothing wrong with it. I grabbed my multimeter and realized that the switch was not getting power however there was power to the outlet in the wall. So, i went with the good old “the plug has gone bad” diagnostic and replaced the plug. That fixed it… so how do you replace the plug? Safety first, be advised that you must be safe! Do not work on electrical things when they are powered or plugged in… ok. First you have to buy a new plug. If you have access to a home improvement store like lowes or home depot those are good places to go. I bought my replacement plug off of amazon.com for around 3 bucks. I must say the quality is cheap but the plug does appear to be mechanically secure upon my own inspection. Inspect your plug! Also, its regular that store bought plug ends come with directions so you should have a look at those as well. Maybe they have more information than this video.. You have your plug, then you want to cut off your old plug.After that put the cap end deal on the wire. After that you want to strip the wires… Note that my plug has a ground prong. I have another video showing how to do a plug replacement, on another vacuum of all things, with no ground prong. Click the i in the corner of your screen to see that either now or at the end of this video. Moving on, once the wires are stripped you want to attach them to the new plug ends. Ground prong is usually green, black would be the power and white is neutral. Here is a schematic of what wires go where. Once you have attached the stripped wires to the proper ends assemble the plug. I recommend tying a knot in the wire like so, it gives the plug a little more strength, especially when and if someone were to pull on the cord when the thing is plugged into the wall. That is not a good way to unplug plugs but its a thing people do… This plug has a kind of weak sauce end piece that grabs onto the wire so i really had to tighten down on it. Along with that the screw that is there kind of sticks out so that could end up giving you a mark or cut if you yoink on the thing… whatch yoinking it ok…. So yeah, its done. Check this out.. It works!! Please let me and others know in the comments below if this has helped you out. If you liked this video there is a button for that. If you want to see other videos like it there is a button for that. And if your just bored, cruze my channel. You may learn a thing or laugh at another...thing.. See ya later internet, i hope that helped.

I've pulled out my hair taking apart my DC25 that stopped turning on. Took ALL of it apart. I did not even think about the plug end until I saw your video. Unscrewed the plug end, and yup - the white cord had worked itself free! Wish I would've seen this video 3 hours ago. Ugh. Thank you.

Saved me from dismantling the Dyson DC02, saw sparks in the cable near to the plug end. Cut cable and put on a new plug. Working again. Many thanks! 👍

Gosh darn! Replacing the plug worked. I too got the vacuum (a DC23) for free. I bought the wrong type of plug, so I need to exchange it next time I'm in the neighborhood of Home depot. I wonder, though, what happens to the plug that requires it to be replaced.

Thanks so much! I called Dyson and asked if they would send me a new switch for my DC14 after seeing other videos swapping the switch. They sent it for free, but when I swapped it I still had no power. I happened across your video and had an extra plug in my garage. Five minutes later I had a running vacuum! No sign of damage on the plug, it just quit. I never would have thought of it.

Please show how you tested the switch with your multimeter.
@DLexEdition
@DLexEdition 4 года назад
There is one of two ways of doing it, both require you to take apart your vacuum to show the leads of the unit. If the unit is powered you can set the multimeter range for 200 ~ 1000VAC depending on your model. When the unit is plugged in, the switch is normally open and will show a significant voltage across both leads, depending on the model it could be 120 VAC and some have a funny 12 ~ 48 VAC engagement switch. When the switch is closed and assuming it's working the voltage drops significantly to near 0 VAC, it could be 0 ~ 5VAC as I seen on some vacuums. If the switch is bad, the voltage will not change no matter how many times you depress the trigger button. The more safe way to do it is test the switch as "continuity" when the power is off and not plugged in. A normally open switch will show infinity in terms of resistance but when you depress the switch and if it's working correctly, you should hear an audible tone or beeping sound and a really low resistance. If you have a bad open switch, it won't sound no matter how many times you try to engage the switch. Now, if you have a problem with it be on when you plug it in and it won't turn off, then it's more than likely you have a broken mount holding the switch in place or you have a shorted switch. Shorted switch will show the same sound / tone with continuity if the switch is up or down. I hope this helps!

To make it cool off faster, put the bottom (where the motor is) in/near a freezer or point a fan at it to cool it. I was able to reset it in minutes doing this.

How can you test the power to the switch?
@torresserg
@torresserg 3 года назад
I didn't want to mess with testing the plug. One of the prongs in my vacuum plug was loose. Not enough to be the non start issue IMO but I thought I'd replace it anyway. I replaced the plug and the vacuum fired right up! The plug cost me $3.45 and about twenty minutes of my time. Thanks for making this how to video.

I cringed when I saw you tie a knot in the cord, especially something as high current draw as a vacuum. That tight knot will turn into a real hot spot in the cord.
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 4 года назад
12 amps constant is what the wiring is rated for, no knot restrictions per NEC as far as I can see...
@DLexEdition
@DLexEdition 4 года назад
@@TRYtoHELPyou That is what the strain relief clamp is for on the outside of the plug. You don't need to coil it and shouldn't do it. It does cause unneeded inductance in the wire and Doug is correct that if for some odd reason the vacuum fails again and equipment inside malfunctions and draws more than 12 amps, you could have a real problem on your hands.

@TRYtoHELPyou

Light switch causing the outlet to not have power? Try other outlets. The switch may be bad, try to get a multimeter to test some of the connections but be sure not to arc electricity and definitely be safe!

Problem was within the plug. Bending prongs did nothing. Poor internal construction of the plug end.

Bending prongs back may make a loose connection but fire hazardous.
