It looks like they were already combined when they launched.

Apparently they are. It's such a weird that the animation put emphasis on those blue lights, which coincidentally was the same amount of mobile suits that White Base had. It's safe to say that it's Amuro's Gundam and Kai and Hayato's Guncannons. I wonder what the RX-78-2 would look like in this timeline?
