Atari was arrogant. They made a $20-30 million dollar bet on E.T. and left the completion of the game to one man who only had 5 freaking weeks to make it. That's nuts.

No matter how many times I watch it, the "Fooled you, it's shiiit!" at the very end always makes me cry laughing...

Viewing this from a casual gamer standpoint, it's just your average shitty game. Nothing really warrants it as "the worst game ever" in the actual game aspect of it. From an economic and development standpoint, yes, this is the worst game ever.

For a British person, you'd think Yahtzee would know that the video game crash (of America) did absolutely fuck all to the UK as we had moved on to program Spectrums by then which created famous people like Peter Molyneux, David Perry and Julian Gallop. So saying it crashed the entire Western hemisphere is a "slight" overstatement. Also, E.T. was only partially responsible for the crash, it was more down to the unsold copies of Pac-Man that caused it. E.T. sold 4 million units (it produced 7 million), which was a phenomenal number back then. So far from a failure. But people like to whitewash the truth to make a more compelling story.

I'm one of the few people who didn't return my E.T. cartridge after that fateful Christmas. Now I am a proud owner of a steaming pile of shit disguised as a game. Funny thing is, the game is so rare, that, I can actually sell it for a hefty sum of cash that can get me out of debt, should I decide to part with it. Ironically, the game that bears the stigmata of causing the video game crash of the 1980s, is now heavily sought after. Someone will actually buy the damn thing from me, just so they can say "I am now the proud owner of a steaming pile of shit, but, it's a steaming pile of shit that made history!"

You're right the E.T games were burried because the game was bad It had nothing to do with the fact they made more copies of the game then consoles that were sold at the time when the gaming industry was considered a hobby and not a form of entertainment. Oh wait maybe it did. By standard of its time E.T isnt a bad game trust me I myself own an Atari 2600 and I own cartridges that are much bigger piles of sludgy shit than this.
