The wooden structure @ 5:32 is called a beaverslide or hay press. They were first invented and used in Beaverhead County and/or the Big Hole Valley of Montana to stack hay in a loaf-shaped stack of hay. The hay is loaded onto the rack and then it is drawn up the inclined ramp by cables to the top of the haystack. They are powered either by a team of horses or a tractor and require a five or six-man crew to operate. They still used these when I was a young man working on ranches. We would then pitchfork the hay from the haystack onto a horse-drawn feed wagon or bob-sled to go out and feed the cattle during the winter months. If the hay was stacked correctly the hay wouldn't spoil for several years. They were used almost exclusively in Montana and Idaho...

@Charlie Swearingen - Yes, When I saw that it reminded me of stacking hay. I grew up on our NH family dairy farm in the 1940's and remember a similar machine but smaller and made from iron/steel. I think it rolled on wheels, but it was used for hay. I know the hay press is mainly used in and around Montana, but I'm sure we had a smaller version on our farm, else I wouldn't have been immediately reminded of it when I saw the video.

@@jacksak In traveling around the western states I've only seen them in Montana and Idaho. So, I figured this is the only place they existed. Thanks for telling me about New Hampshire...

Thank you for the detailed information, especially from someone that worked with them. We were looking at them and trying to figure out how they worked. I will try and find a video of one in operation. The ingenuity of how they did things on farms is always fascinating.

You wondered what the wooden structures are. I certainly can't forget wooden "stackers" in the 50s and 60s (as we called them), we didn't know them as Beaverslides but I'm sure Charlie Swearingen is right about the early history. I mowed a lot of wild hay in summers in Nebraska southwest of Valentine when I was a kid. Western Nebraska was cattle ranch country then, this was before the center pivot irrigation mess of plowing up huge ranches to grow corn. "Sweeps" were improbable looking vehicles, a lot of fun to drive, they were kind of crazy hot rod things, home made from old cars or pickups, reversed driving position for rear steering and they needed the engine weight to counter the weight of the hay they picked up. They had a big fork built on what was the back of the car to collect up hay. Sweeps ran down the rows of hay that had been raked up and brought it to the stacker. The stacker has a big fork that elevates the hay up the structure that you saw and dumps it into a cage. My close friend and another kid in the cage distributed / arranged the hay tight with pitchforks... the object is to pitch hay across over the hay below to more or less lock it in place. Big job with a pitchfork before the sweep loaded up more hay. We did over 300 haystacks (wild hay) one summer. I mowed with a Farmall M running a 7ft bar and 7ft trail bar. Sharpened sickles until I was blue in the face, same with replacing teeth that popped out while mowing. We didn't have any cold thermos anything in those days either, we had glass gallon jugs wrapped in burlap then baling wire around the burlap. Dip the burlap covered jug in a tank for evaporative cooling, that was it. By the way you drove very near my old place southwest of Wise RIver. I still have a 110 acre place west of Cascade, it's incredibly scenic west of the Missouri River all along the Eastern Front.

Great detailed story! Always good to hear how the stuff operated, but also what it took to get the job done! Definitely a job requiring both emotional and physical strength in conditions like those. When the job needed to get done..it got done. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Interesting piece of ranch equipment. I have no idea what it is however. Again, another well documented part of the adventure. Well done.

There is a detailed response of what it was used for. Driving around ranches in the various states were some of the best parts of the trip.

The rusty metal in front of the culvert was once an open mine adit. An "adit" is an entrance to a mine that is horizontal and they shut them off to keep inexperienced people out of the mine which is a good place for them to get trapped, injured, or killed LOL. A "shaft" is a vertical hole from the ground surface straight down and it is the only access to the bottom. Shafts can be used for access or as you mentioned an air supply, but they are vertical and never horizontal...
@simpleoverlander
@simpleoverlander 3 года назад
Thanks for the info! This adit led into the mine itself but we did not venture in beyond what we could see from the other end of it.

Montana is the "Big Sky" state because the eastern prairies are fairly flat making it appear that about 60% of any scenic view is the sky and 40% is the landscape making the sky seem to overwhelm the landscape at times. The term "Big Sky Country" doesn't really apply to the mountainous areas of Montana. The nickname "Big Sky Country" originated with a 1962 promotion by the Montana State Highway Department and it appeared on Montana's license plates from 1967 to 1975...

Good info. Makes sense, although the sky looks huge and amazing no matter the backdrop in MT. This is probably my favorite state. The colors and views are incredible. "Big Sky Ski Resort" in the mountains did not get the memo apparently though haha
