E98-9 - Torey Lovullo Ejected by Vic Carapazza After Strahm's HBP of Star Player Carroll, Rojas too

I watched this live. Lovullo was just putting on a show to try and get his team going.

Carroll was check swinging at both of those pitches and got hit. It didnt look intentional at all. The only guess I have is that Torey Lovullo and Vic Carapaaza have a history with each other and they probably dont like each other. I dont like Vic Carapazza much as an umpire, but Id say that Rojas ejection was a power trip move by Carapazza.

Mgr, players, broadcaster, all say “the umpire should do this, umpire should do that, umpire shouldn’t…gimme a forking break boys. The day I see you behind the plate calling a game is the day I’ll let you 2nd guess how an umpire handles these high-strung millionaires. I know Lindsay’s been there, done that. Preach sister👏

Jt should have stayed out of the argument in my opinion. Torey didn’t say anything to him until he stepped in. Manager has to say something when his guy is hit twice.

Kudos to the umpires for putting out the fire so quickly. Kudos to Torey for protecting his player. Kudos to JT for protecting his pitcher.

It could be parallax, but the second one barely even looks inside (I'd be curious to see the px). It was clearly very high, so not a strike, but the only reason Carroll got hit was because he started to swing at it.

Maybe if his batter would stop starting to swing at pitches that high and tight he wouldn’t get hit. They need to suspend Lovullo like they did Boone then maybe he would stop arguing so much.

This is all kind of just leftover from the issues with the "Pirates way" of pitching inside. It's fine to pitch inside if you can control your stuff. It's not right that the opponent has to suffer the consequences of your misses and you can continue to go on with no correcting factor. Back in the barbaric days the opponent would just knock down your batter to "take care of it" and MLB rightly took action to take that out of the game, but they left a hole in the system. Of course the pitcher isn't trying to hit the batter but that's irrelevant if they continue to pitch in there without the control to do so. So I'm not surprised that Lovullo took action when the pitcher goes 0-2 on controlling his stuff, what other mechanism is available to put a stop to their actions if the Phillies are just going to continue to put his star player at an unreasonable risk to injury?

Best bit about this is Lovullo goes on about how where he was pitching was a “not safe zone” and he wants to create awareness that it’s not gonna make anyone comfortable yet next game Kelly was pitching up in that zone against Bryce and it seems he’s fine with it 😂

The batter was hit on a check swing in both at bats. Neither of the pitches that were thrown would have struck the batter had be not swung. Pitchers are allowed to throw inside. If the batter can't read that the pitch is out of the zone and gets his arms/hands in the way on a check swing, the batter walks to first and the game moves on. This is what would have happened in the game. The batter had no significant reaction, there was no sign of intent, there is no history between the teams or players, and the pitcher was not missing wildly inside or up in the zone. Lovullo's reaction is the definition of SOFT and instigated a completely unnecessary clearing of the benches. The umps handled it well.

Great job by umpires keeping this under control. Getting tired of prima donnas who get offended when they are pitched inside. Although this player didn't seem to have an issue with it, I've seen it time and again. AZ manager may something out of nothing. He deserved to get run.

Both times the batter was attempting/starting to swing at the pitch up and in. Clearly the game plan of going up and is working since hes chasing those pitches. HOWEVER if he didnt try to swing he wouldnt have been hit. Question I've always had is why is leaning into a pitch negate the hit by pitch BUT if you are starting to swing and are hit AND are not called by an umpire for completing said swing, you can take 1st base on a HBP. How is leaning in not ok but throwing your arms in front of the pitch when "swinging" and being hit is ok.

If he doesn’t at least start his normal swing motion he will never catch up to 95 on the inside corner. By the time he recognizes the pitches are going to hit him it is to late. He stops his swing but not before the HBP. TL was obviously upset that they are pitching inside when the pitcher did not have the command to do so. Was it intentional to hit Carroll? No. Did they intentionally pitch inside when the pitcher had no command? Yes.. that is the issue and that is definitely why TL was yelling at the Phillies.

Both pitches were between the plate and the batters box. Perfectly fine to pitch there. The batter put his arm in the way of both pitches because neither would have hit him otherwise.

Torey Lovullo is butt-hurt because the Phillies exposed his rookie phee-nom as a guess-hitter who's helpless against a pitch he's not expecting. It's possible that nobody in Carroll's baseball development chain ever noticed this flaw until now. Needless to say, the rest of Carroll's season could become a sticky wicket.

All of these benches-clearing incidents, including the bullpens "running" toward the plate, are moronic and childish. Let the manager rant at the ump; the players should just shut up and stay away. Figure out a way to pump your ego and prove your manhood somewhere else.

This is why IMO, there needs to be a rule that a manager can NEVER be thrown out and that all managers have the authority (say five times total in a season) to actually toss an umpire. Having a balance of power will curb the egos. Additionally, a simple rule, if a pitcher, in trying to pitch to a heat map, shows an inability to control where he's pitching sufficiently such that he hits more that one batter, he's out of the game. If the batter's grip invades the strike zone such that he's hit, the batter is out no matter what the count.

It’s time for baseball to adopt a basketball rule. If you aren’t in the game and come onto the field, it’s an automatic ejection. If the whole dugout comes on the field, then the whole dugout gets ejected. If everyone in the bullpen comes on the field then the whole bullpen gets ejected. This one is tough on umps. I think they did it right. To me, yes the pitches were inside.. but not so far as to be aimed at him.. I think both would have missed if he didn't start his swing (of course if he didn't and that pitch moved he's toast too.).. the warning.. normally I wouldn't agree.. but in this case, if that's not done something tells me AZ would be plunking someone. Torey was wrong.. on every level.

Leaving your position, dugout, or bullpen during any conflict...SUSPENSION. And every ejection should come with a 9 inning suspension to prevent late game whining. MLB is a joke.

Torey has a legitimate gripe. Strahm was ahead in the count literally the entire game and then CC gets hit up and in twice? Definitely not trying to put him on base but if you suddenly lose your control and miss up and in to the other teams best hitter, I’d be pissed too.

One of the craziest statements of all time. We know for almost a fact that the Phillies threw in on purpose because of his numbers and the Phillies announcers acted incredulous even though they were pitching in for reason. Not necessarily hitting but throwing in.

As an example, Lovullo should be suspended at least two games here. One for the incitement of the clearing of the benches after being ejected, the second to get the point across to knock it off.

Also I think there needs to be a policy of, no punches thrown, 1st and 3rd base umps babysit the dugouts. 1 idiot decides to jump the fence when there's no fights, and everyone goes, well, I guess I need to help, when there's nothing to help with. We just have a boring 10 minute delay over nothing. No punches, and someone steps out the base umpires need to give a warning and then start to toss people. There was no need for benches to clear, and then the bullpens, Come out with a slow jog, and then head back out to the outfield wall with a slower walk. All of that without an actual fight.

i think it was more about the pitcher not having control where you want to throw it in a potentially dangerous zone (up and in) so stop throwing it near there, rather than any intent to hit the kid. that's why Lovullo was getting in Realmuto's face about it. He was saying to stop calling for up and in if he can't hit his spot
