Eachine ET5 Mini Gasoline Engine 

Generally I find I purchase the best "gifts" for me. :-) ET1 (M90), ET7 (M94) and ET6 (M92) are my favorite hit-n-miss engines, in that order. ET1 (M90) was the first in the series. ET7 (M94) has a simplified governor and is easiest to work on in terms of replacing the piston ring o-ring. EM2 (M19) is also a really nice engine. Pretty little engine and a good runner. I would totally avoid the ET5 (M12), ET5 Pro (M12 pro), ET5S (M12C) and ET8 (M93) engines. I always suggest using PayPal for payment which simply gives you one more layer of protection. Interesting. They change things from time to time. You may end up wanting to put a dummy battery in place of one of the batteries. We found the ignition would (sometimes) cut out on the Hit & Miss engines when 3 batteries were used.

Wolfgang, I think you would be disappointed with this engine for that purpose. You may want to consider something like the following. There are different versions. Some of these have electric starters and are water cooled. They are intended to run on methanol fuel with glow plugs. They say there are ignition conversion available so it can run on petrol. Since you had it apart...make sure both valves are closing as they have a tendency to stick open... and that both have clearance with the rockers. As built, the timing is pretty much fixed. The magnet and hall effect sensor are under the flywheel without the rope starter. You need to make absolutely sure all the air is out of the fuel line or it will never run. Good luck!

Good question, but not necessarily an easy one to answer. Are you mechanically minded? Have you worked with or on engines before? If not, I would not recommend this engine. A lot of people like this engine but a lot of people have trouble with this engine as well. In my opinion the ET1 and ET7 Hit & Miss engines are the best/easiest to own. You will still need to be willing to work on them but it is not that difficult… you gotta start somewhere. If you are mechanically minded and know how to work on stuff… hands-on… then I would consider the EM1 which I consider a work of art and a beautiful display engine. But still… I would start with the ET7 (easiest to work on) or ET1 first. With all of these engines keep them oiled and if you are not going to run it immediately, take out the fuel, water and batteries. It actually seems a bit daunting to get one. 250 euro is a lot of money, and I don't intend to invest a lot of time in getting them to work, much less keeping them working. The steam and stirling engines I have 'just work' when I show them off, and provide me with a lot of enjoyment by just looking pretty the rest of the time. It seems these gasoline engines are in another class, both requiring a bigger investment of time as well as money. I did view your other videos as well, but this one grabbed my attention the most. It just looks and sounds so nice. I also considered the Aliexpress "self circulating internal combustion engine model", which seems less complex and prone to breaking down, but also considerably less pretty. (Edit: aliexpress.com/i/4000008141818.html ) I'll think about it some more before I make the investment! (Also, to anyone reading; I highly recommend you use the coupon codes in the description of the video. For this engine, it saves you 50 euro. I wasted 10 euro on my steam engine by not using it.)

I looked at the “self circulating internal combustion engine model”. I think it was listed on Banggood (maybe still is). I thought it was too gimmicky with the clear combustion chamber and other stuff… gave it a miss as I could foresee problems. I would recommend the “Tarot Large Scale Stirling Engine” which is very attractive and a good performer. Also good are the following small engines. Clockwise rotation closes the valve, which makes the mixture leaner. Counterclockwise opens the valve for a richer mixture. Something I did not cover in this video is that the carburetor has two needle valves… one for high speed and one for low speed (idle speed). Get the engine running correctly before messing with the low speed needle and remember, do not over speed the engine. Hopefully the carburetor was correctly set from the factory so the engine runs just as you received it. Also, the carburetor settings will be a little easier after the engine has warmed up a little. If there is any air in the fuel line between the tank and carb it will not start. If you over-choke the carb and get the spark plug too wet it will not start until it dries out. Throttle on the carb must be fully closed to the idle position or it will not start. Valves on this engine stick open sometimes. Flick them to make sure they are seating and you have compression. Mine has never had a lot of compression. Right now I cannot get mine to fire. Still working one it (on occasion when I have time).

I use Coleman fuel plus "Just A Hint" of Marvel Mystery Oil (much less than 4%). Personally, I have not used gasoline (petrol) in these engines since Coleman fuel burns so clean. All you can do is try the highest octane gasoline/petrol you can buy.

Thanks Sir. I just bought a M12 followed by your link. The enigne not work, so I have tested the ignition and it is normal. I have also cleaned the spark plug and its chamble and get rid of the oil inside. But still the engine not work at all. I have spend another hour to loose main oil needle from 1/8 to 1/2 after fully tight. I rotate a little by little with hand, but engine still can not start. I checked the spark plug after that and it is still dry. Is there a perfect position of main oil needle? Even missed a little or over a little, the engine will not start? I need to rotate the main needle more carefully?

I use the same coleman fuel and marvel mastery oil as you did.

Hello Chengzhang, It can be frustrating when one of these decides not to run. This is my basic (canned response) checklist for this engine. I assume you have compression. Sometimes the valves can stick open and there will be no compression. Just flick the valves gently to get them to free up and seal. First, the boot needs to be on the spark plug and then the wire just butts up against the end of the plug. Make sure your battery is good and that you have a good spark. This engine does not have much compression (at least my ET5 did not have much compression). If you have zero compression, remove the valve cover and flick the valves a little and make sure the valves are actually closing. And that there is a slight gap between the valve arm and the valve stem. You need some compression. You may need to open the needle valve 3/8 to 1/2 turn (maybe a little more). Each engine (or each carburetor) could be slightly different. After it starts running, then you can close the needle valve slightly until it runs correctly. Carburetor needs to be full closed to the idle position (this is set at the factory) for starting. It is not easy to get all the air out of the fuel line. Fill the tank completely so the connection to the fuel line is completely covered. If there is any air in the fuel line, even one bubble, the engine will not start. With the engine starter (cordless drill) turning, place your finger over the carburetor to choke the engine and completely fill the fuel line. If you run out of fuel, then air will get into the fuel line and you will need to do this again. If you get too much fuel into the engine (flooded engine and the spark plug is too wet) it will not start either. Then you will need to dry the plug and get excess fuel out of the cylinder. To do this gently remove the spark plug and spin the engine with a rope starter. I really do not recommend using the cordless drill adapter. I think it can be a bit rough on the engine. Sometimes the cordless drill starter can make it more difficult to start the engine because you must pull the adapter out while the drill it running full speed. Sometimes this can drag and actually slow down the engine. Or your cordless drill may not turn fast enough. Make a rope starter using smaller cord as I show in my video. It will spin the engine faster than a cordless drill. Get someone to help you hold the engine so you do not accidentally pull it off the table and drop or damage the engine. Hope that helps. One other thing... do not tighten the needle valve too tight (only close it gently) as it is possible to break the point of the needle off if tightened too tight. It can take a little experimentation to find the correct needle position. Each engine can be a little different. After it starts and warms up a little further adjustment will be required. Too much oil in the fuel can also be a problem. Just enough Marvel Mystery Oil to change the color a little is plenty.

Hello Reiner, When you say you “turned the screw,” are you referring to the “needle valve”? Carburetor needle valve adjustment for most of these model engines is very sensitive. It is a very fine point between running and not running. There is no manual. Where did you buy the engine? How long have you had it (when did you receive it)? Is this your first model engine or do you have previous experience with such engines? Ron

@@RonaldWalters2010 Hello Ron, this is my 3 engine of this type. I have one ET1 and two ET5 the second I bought when I had adjusted the carburetor needle and he no longer ran !!! I bought both engines from Bangood. If you want to know when I received it for reclamation or repair, I don't want to send it back, then I guess I will keep experimenting until I eventually find the adjustment again. Have but otherwise not so much experience with these engines !!! Reiner

Eventually I'll write to Eachine and ask there times although I have little hope. Your channel is really the hammer would like to have a few more of these engines as well as the Eachine EM1, EM3, EM4 and so on and so on. If they are cheaper again I will certainly get me again a model. I think you are just great ! Unfortunately, they are not very often sold from Poland or from Czech Republic, because otherwise I also have to pay customs and or import tax in Germany, but I do not give up hope! Greeting Reiner

Hello Reiner, Well, I hope you are using the links and discount codes in my video descriptions whenever you purchase an engine. I find the ET5 to be somewhat problematic. Do not waste your money on the ET5 Pro. Also, I have declined to review the new 2-cylinder version ET5S. ETX runs well but is too complicated. I would recommend buying something else instead. ET6 and ET7 are good engines. Stay away from the ET8. Way too many problems with this engine. EM1 double piston engine runs nicely, however it does tend to shake itself apart and requires frequent re-tightening and re-timing. Mine did not run out of the box. I had to replace a number of setscrews, which were too short, and then I had to figure out how to time it. Asking Eachine for help was a total waste of time… they did not want to answer anything. They acted like I was asking for trade secrets and I am trying to help sell their engines! The EM1 is VERY, VERY sensitive to needle valve adjustment. But I think it is a beautiful engine just to look at! EM2 seems like a very nice little engine. Very steady runner… and also a pretty little engine. For most engines… gently close the needle valve and open it 1/4 turn. Absolutely no air in the fuel line. Once it is running and has warmed up a little… adjust the needle valve (very slowly) for best running. If you are using regular automotive petrol in your engines, carbon could become a problem. Fouling a spark plug or it does not take much to hold a valve open slightly and then it will not run. I like the Coleman fuel with very little Marvel Mystery Oil as it is clean burning. ET5 … the fuel line is difficult to get out all the air and maybe the little o-rings on the connectors could leak a little air. My needle valve was 1/4 to 1/3 turn open. The ignition system on older engines had a habit of quitting when 3 batteries were used. So we accidentally discovered that the problem went away with only 2 batteries plus a dummy battery, which lowered the voltage. I will be reviewing the EM3 and EM4 next. Currently it looks like Banggood is out of stock for many of the engines. Sorry I cannot be of more help with your ET5 Have fun! Ron

Sorry I had completely overlooked, no I have the needle on the throttle adjusted, not the needle where the fuel line arrives! I use lighter gasoline with a small shot of 2 stroke oil!!! You can run these engines on regular automotive gasoline however you do not need all the additives which tend to be in automotive gasoline. I just had to watch your unboxing part carefully, so I detected the adapter which was included in the package. But unfortunately, the engine doesn't start at all. It's obviously a little bit different to your one, because it's using 3 batteries ( 4.5V).Fueltank and batteries are full, so I really don't know, why it's not starting.

It can be frustrating when one of these decides not to run. This is my basic (canned response) checklist for this engine. I assume you have compression. Sometimes the valves can stick open and there will be no compression. Just flick the valves gently to get them to free up and seal. Make sure the switch is wired correctly… so “ON” is actually “ON”. It is possible for it to be wired backwards accidentally. The boot needs to be on the spark plug and then the wire just butts up against the end of the plug. They changed the battery pack to hold three batteries some time ago. Make sure the three batteries are installed in the battery holder in the correct orientation. Make sure your batteries are good and that you have a good spark. This engine does not have much compression (at least my ET5 did not have much compression). If you have zero compression, remove the valve cover and flick the valves a little and make sure the valves are actually closing. And that there is a slight gap between the valve arm and the valve stem. You need some compression. Start with the carburetor needle valve 1/4 turn open. You may need to GRADUALLY increase the opening of the needle valve 3/8 to 1/2 turn (maybe a little more). Each engine (or each carburetor) could be slightly different. Hi Ron. Meanwhile I checked everything.There are a couple of things, I'm not sure about it. First, to the spark there is no connector to it, just a red wire in the black rubber part. Not sure wether this is ok so. Contact problems? My three batteries have a charge of aprox. 1.45 each. In seriell, total voltage is 4.1V. Not sure, wether this is enough for the funtionality. My third concerning is the fuel. As in some youtube videos seen, I'm using normal Zippo Lighter fuel. But this is more than 8 years old. Could it be, that the consistency is not ok anymore? I also played with the oil needle and the carburetor, without any success.

Hi Ron Watching another video from you, I learned a lot again. Now I know, that the red wire, heading to the spark has no connector. The ignitor is working with the 4.1V. The spark is always there, easily to see in dark. No idea, why the engine still doesn't start. Probably the old Zippo lighter fuel?

You can use Coleman Camping Fuel as I show in the video or 91 octane unleaded gasoline with zero alcohol content. I recommend the Coleman fuel with a little oil as shown in the video.

hey i know im in the UK and i have 95 but i heard you can use 91 but it runs a lil ruff mate i reckon you use coleman to if you want

The engine will run well on Naphtha based camp fuel which is only about 70 octane. It will run a bit better on gasoline but the camp fuel is safer to handle, won't make your fingers smell of gas, and won't leave gum or deposits in the tank/line/carburetor when left sitting. It's also less smoky when running.
