Say what you will about the Rainbow Machine, you have to admit this crazy magic bubblegum box has made a big impact on people’s pedalboards.
“It just does that THING that nothing else kinda does.”
-Troy Van Leeuwen
Since entering our world at the end of the first decade of this century, the Rainbow Machine has turned more than a few heads with its bizarre and captivating trademark sounds. Just as many heads turn when people find out how useable and practical it actually is.
“It’s not a one trick pony. It’s the exact opposite of a one trick pony.”
-Jeff France
Take a trip over the rainbow into the mind of the creator of this somewhat misunderstood musical contraption, as Jamie Stillman shares some historical anecdotes. He even invited some friends. If you have ever been confused or disgusted by this device, you are in good company. Hear what many musicians have to say about one of our most versatile, often vile, and shockingly beautiful sounding devices to date. You might even learn a new way to implement the Rainbow Machine into your effects arsenal.
“It’s just such a distinct sound but it’s cool that it has so many applications.”
-Sadie Dupuis

Favorite part: Juan Alderete talking about "It's like acid. If you've never done acid, it's like mushrooms. If you've never done mushrooms, it's like if you've ever been knocked out."

With some pedals you have to forget they’re for the guitar to get the most out of them. Rainbow machine is one of those pedals. It won’t “sculpt your tone” to sound like SRV but it will give you the ability to create soundscapes that reach beyond what most players would consider guitar tone. I love it. It’s playful and unpretentious. You can paint with sound vs play guitar.

My favorite part about the pedal is the story of the name. As a teacher and caring uncle, I love how children can so easily inspire us and push us to new ideas. The fact that Jamie's daughter helped that way is simply wholesome and puts a smile on my face!

My favorite part of this vid is Rob Schnapf's beard. That's exactly how my grandpa styled his when he was younger. Also wore a similar hat and flannel. He's the guy who got me into not just playing guitar, but finding value in strange and often broken instruments. When I was a kid we'd go dumpster diving behind stores like Radio Shack and end up leaving with bags full of various electronic treasures. One of my first keyboards was attained that way. Also picked up a 12 string behind some mall near the U.S/ Mexican border. It's too bad I don't have any of that stuff any more, and I miss my grandfather very much. I honestly wasn't expecting to be reminded of my grandpa by watching this video. But hey, that's what happened when that beard popped in. The Rainbow Machine is the kind of device that my grandpa and I would find discarded somewhere. Not because it's trash, but because it wasn't understood. Someone didn't know what shelf to put it on. Good thing there are people out there like us who appreciate the magical things that aren't so easily categorized.

Personally, I use the Rainbow Machine on bass as a special effect at the end of some songs. If you dial it in just right, it creates a descending, repeating "explosion" sound, like the end of the world is about to happen, and everything is constantly exploding. It's fantastic for a doom metal band, even though you CAN tune it to make rainbows, you can make the opposite happen as well.

Favorite part was seeing Yvette Young in there cause I just love her but, just seeing all these different artists (that I look up to) using this pedal in different ways really pumped me up. Also love that a kids imagination was the idea behind the art.

The intro to this is exactly the experience I got when I went to my local guitar store and asked what the Rainbow Machine does. They asked what I was looking for and followed up with "it doesn't matter what you're looking for actually, this will do something else. Try it." I think my favorite part is that no-one really knew what they were doing, but did it anyway and now we have the rainbow machine! Also, the part where they're explaining the concept art ... sounds as convoluted and whimsical as the machine itself! Would love to have one of these but ... not sure what I'd do with it ;)

I have two favorite parts. 1) that everyone says ‘I like it but don’t know what to use it for. That’s my favorite part of music. When I bought my afterneath I was like ‘well. It’s weird and I think it’ll do what I need it to’ and it ultimately opened new musical highways for me to travel. It’s replaced 3 reverbs and 2 delays I had. 2) super stoked to see a woman owned company. Strong women make the world go round. Much love y’all.

I bought this pedal a year ago after thinking about it for months. I just love weird pedals but I didn´t want to waste money in it because most reviews only played the outrageous sounds that the pedal contains. But I have to say that this pedal is now essential to me. Not just for the chorus but because its versatility and other cool little effects. The magic button if used correctly does some neat effects specially in V2. It is a very different pedal for sure but it has at least 2 or 3 great and usable sounds in it, the rest it is just plain fun. The perfect pedal to add on top of something else and wonder "what the hell is that?"

I discovered this trick by accident. I was at the time having a rainbow machine and a moogerfooger mf101 on my board, both of which can be controlled by an expression pedal. So I made a little switcher box out of three stereo jacks and toggle switch that allowed me to select which effect to route the expression pedal to. What I discovered was that when the exp was routed to the mf101, something happened to the rainbow machine: with the TRS jack plugged in the Exp input (but not connected to anything) the pitch knob would stop functioning! No matter where i turned the knob, the pitch was set to unison/noon. At first, I was annoyed by this, I wanted unicorn farts but got slap back echo instead. But then I realized that this was the key to easily get a lot more usable or normal sounds out of the device. Hitting that exact unison position is not easy using an exp pedal, but using a switch to disconnect the exp pedal makes it easy to flip between the crazy ascending pitch explosions and more normal (not completely normal, it’s still a rainbow Machine) echo and chorus sounds. The mf101 has left the board since then, but I made a new switcher box that basically connects or disconnects the Exp pedal from the cable plugged into the exp input. So there you have it, hope any rainbow Machine users out there will find this useful! Also: was this intentional by EQD?

IWANTIT. I need the avalanche run first though. Maybe if I make a really long comment I'll win. The pink though - ehhhh I really want the sparkly dark purple limited edition, it looks so much cooler. (those other colors at the end of the video -whaaaa where are those available) Everyone always talks about the magic button - probably because no other pedal has that feature, and it's trippy and fun. It reminds me of Animal Collective - they always have very liquid-sounding effects. But the rest of the features are so practical. The bassist of the band I'm in recently got this and is using it as a chorus with whammy a lot of the time. I usually hate Chorus sounds, but this sounds amazing. Similar to your flanger pedal - you guys are able to take classic effects that I find overused and stupid like flanger and chorus, and make them totally new and beautiful. Also if you put this through your effects loop with a noise gate it controls the magic button in a way that allow so much more playability and there's nothing like it. Favorite parts of the video: The fact that Juan can't stop talking about acid. Description from 0:27 - 0:35 How fucked up Nick's pedal is and his switched-out knob Josh Martin's playing The fact that you guys are on-point with these marketing films.

I particularly enjoyed watching everyone go over their favorite settings and how they use the Rainbow Machine. It seems like there are vast possibilities with the pedal.
