Summary, but watch the video: - Push regular socks with a constricting top down to ankle - Don't let compression stockings roll down - Sit on your butt, not on butt and back of legs. This means moving to the near edge of seat so only glutes are on chair. - Don't sit on a chair that's so high your legs dangle - lower the chair if you can, or put something under your feet. - Elevating legs w ottoman or recliner helps. However, don't put the Achilles tendon on an edge - there's a vein back there, and this restricts blood flow. Use a pillow to distribute the pressure. - Reclining more helps more. - Don't curl your legs under your chair. - Don't lean forward when sitting. - Don't sit for longer than an hour - Walking works, but many short walks work better than one long walk.

Dangled my legs off the edge of my office chair for 3 years, valves in my legs became damaged and surgery indicated. Fixed the chair, spent time elevating legs and 9 months later circulation is much better. Hoping to avoid surgery. This video is absolutely correct. If only I had known this sooner. Thank you for your tips. I have done some of these, but will make sure I am aware of all of the issues. I try to use my stationary bicycle from one to two hours a day. This has also helped me with the circulation and my stability.

I’m telling you what I retired last summer I ended up having a knee replacement and carpal tunnel surgery in my hand and elbow all that got severally agrevated by me gardening hard so anyway I just retired from nursing and I can tell I’m older and the old saying use it or lose it my legs feel so weak and I believe it’s from not getting the exercise from working I’m going to have to exercise in order to continue to garden. But I don’t have the motivation I’m trying!!! I do keep busy here at the house but I’m still not as active and I think that’s hurting me.

Yes, getting out of the routine of being active at work. I now go to the gym three times a week. It has gotten to be so much of a habit, that I barely think about it. Trying to make sure I’m active the other days as well. I’ve got some trips planned this year and I want to make sure I’m able to fully participate. Good luck with your gardening!

Requesting something for “barista wrist” - repetitive strain injury, for me specifically, from a constant rotating my wrist 180° to rinse a steaming pitcher. I’ve tried some stretches with minor improvement, but I don’t know which ones are actually helping vs temporary relief or actually aggravating it.

I suffer from peripheral neuropathy, it's horrible.. I'm now in physical therapy for lymphatic edema.. 1 visit an half my fluid pressure problems are gone.. I'm sure I squeezed my therapist in hugs to hard😂😅 she's awesome 👍❤

My dad could use this video very much. He’s had knee replacement surgery in ‘22 & ‘23. He’s better, but his ankles and feet are still so swollen it’s quite overwhelming for me to see as his son, 😞. I keep telling him motion is lotion.

Mike if the swelling doesn’t go down in about a year, take your Dad to the doctor and have him checked for Lymphedema. Had total knee replacements in 2005. One year later had blood clot in left leg and lung. Year after that Lymphedema started very slowly. Had it now for 18 years. Don’t ignore it. Ask the doctor about compression socks and learn all you can about it. If neglected it can get worse. The lymphatic fluid is pooling in the ankle and foot. Mike I’m not saying your Dad has this. I’m just saying ask the doctor about it. I’ve had to learn all I can about this in order that I can help myself. Never had heard of this before until I got it. What I know now I could write a book about it. Good luck to your Dad.

Get thee on a carnivore or other low-carb diet, and buy a vibration plate. I was 76 y.o. male, prediabetic, hypertensive, arthritic and 235 lbs. Now almost 77, no longer prediabetic (avg. blood glucose 90), 183 lbs, arthritis drastically reduced. I still have a ways to go (probably another 10-15 lbs to get off the last b.p. meds, but I have no doubt about getting there).

I have bad circulation in my legs, and I need both of my knees replaced, so I do sit a lot, and I have tried compression socks, but they hurt too much and still cut my circulation off because I have really big calves.Mike don't feel about your socks both of my daughters wore mixed match socks since they were very young and still do and one is in her early 30's the other is in her mid 30's and so do their friends and my granddaughters and my gradsons! So many young people do like you said it's a trend, so tell Brad to stop teasing you !!!

The neuropathy tips have been amazing for me! The sciatica is better but pops up at night.I got compression socks for Christmas........mine are ankle length.I also try not to cross my legs......I know thats bad too.

The advice I've gotten is to wear compression socks, pump your feet/calves while you sit, & try to get up & walk through the aisle once an hour.

I agree with trying to keep the body straight for proper blood flow. I have a question though, why is it common for Occupational health to recommend sitting in a computer chair at a 90 degree angle for correct ergonomics? Isn't that bad?

The science on the 90 degree sitting posture is actually bogus. Occupational health agencies have been saying this for forever, but the original paper that recommended this sitting posture was actually NOT about this position being healthy. It was a paper about how to fit the most radar operators (soldiers operating radars or other systems with screens) into the back of a military truck. And somehow it then got fumbled into "this is the most healthy way to sit" and gets pushed until this day. There's some groups of orthopedic doctors who have looked at this but there's not enough of them to change the scientific consensus just yet. But basically, they're proposing that a 120 degree angle at the hip (so, leaning backwards) is much better if your chair has proper lumbar support and if you adjust the screen and keyboard position accordingly. A larger number of doctors recommend that you shouldn't sit in any fixed position for too long at all, neither 90 degrees, nor 120 degrees leaned back but that you should change position and even switch out chairs to encourage different sitting positions during the day. So, eg have a normal computer chair and sit qt 90 degrees for a while, then switch to sitting on a big gym ball, then switch back to the chair but at a 120 degree position because after the ball your back muscles might need some rest and relaxation, then lift your desk to a standing position and work while standing for a while etc.

What happens if you sit with your feet about 6 to 8 inches high, not with legs in alignment of your body? Is this bad?

So I have had lymphedema for 20years. A few years ago I was in a car accident . I got a tiny scratch on my lower leg. I noticed my sock was wet and my show were filling up with liquid . It lasted for three days or so. It completely drain the lymph out of my lower leg. And that leg has seldom gotten swollen again.. occasionally my ankles swell a little . But they will go back to almost normal. I do walk a lot but seldom wear compression socks.

Lol a log from my wood pile clipped my shin now the fluid builds under my knee instead of the lower leg. No longer have the puffed up hot dog effect happening

Any tips for osteoarthritis and no cartilage in the knees I've had Euflexxa shots that lubricated my knee joints but i still get stiff achy knees sometimes

My feet is hurt when i run in modern running shoes, but when i ran in casual sport style shoes i dont feel hurt at all beside fatique. Does it mean normal? Or to much cushion from nowadays running shoes? Or may be to high stack? Pls help me

I have venous insufficiency and wear compression socks - I don't wear them to bed but I find most mornings that my legs hurt really badly from the ankles up to my knees. What, if anything, can I do to stop that happening?

What about crossing your legs while seated? Does that restrict the blood flow?

Based on what they said about sitting position, crossing the legs is bad for circulation

It can temporarily restrict blood flow but it doesn't cause long term circulation issues

My M-I-L fell and fractured her pelvis about a month ago. Now she's in a wheelchair and it's really hard for her to elevate her legs without help. Her feet and lower legs started swelling in the hospital and still bother her. It would be great if she could just get up and walk around, but that's not possible right now. She's in Assisted Living but doesn't like calling for help. These are great tips for ambulatory people, but others have a really difficult time doing some of these things.

I have extreme vertigo and have recently sprained my ankle. The pain is unbearable. I have a recliner but I also have a very bad knee and bringing it up too far only increases the pain and I have to let it up and down. I also have two steps to have to go up in order to get to the rest of my house like bathrooms and bedrooms. Going up the steps is just excruciating. I have compression soxs and that but nothing has seemed to work. I can barely walk now. I don't know if I can stand months of this or not. It's been horrible. Now going on 3 weeks since I sprained my ankle. It's so sore.

We would suggest allowing your ankle to heal before trying to rehab it too quickly. Sometimes when we push ourselves too much we can cause more damage. Use ice, compression, and stay off of it until you can use it slightly without pain. Don't do anything that causes more pain. You may want to use crutches when you are needing to do those stairs. I’m 4’10 inches tall and I suffer with swollen feet because chairs are always too high for me, going out for a meal is hard I end up perched on the edge of the chair, and car journeys are terrible by the time I get where I’m going my feet and ankles hurt.

Use/get holistic medicine, mine cleared the next day, 3 yr groin injury and swelling/tightness happened when I'd exercise, legs would stiffen, good luck!

Re: socks @0:40 I have spent a small fortune trying to find socks that are not tight around the circumference from the back bottom of the heel going around the upper front of the ankle. In recent years this has become painful so that I either use no-show socks or just go without. I have no edema and am not diabetic but even diabetic socks are no help. They have lots of stretch at the lower leg/top of ankle as well as around the lower foot but strangle that "crotch", if you will, where the front of the bottom shin meets the top of the foot. Any suggestions?

I have a problem at night because I sleep in a fetal position my knees curled up. I have always done this and I never ever had problems until I started getting older I’m 63 and now I cannot sleep with my legs straight at night either one or both are curled up around me, I try and try and try to sleep with my legs straight but I cannot do it from habit over the years. Do you have any suggestions for nighttime?

*Merch suggestion* Idk if it's possible, but you'd be heroes to many (more so than already, ofc!) 4:35 There is a large population of people who need to have a pillow placed thus, but can't manage it on their own &/or can't manage to remove it in order to be able to get up. Would it be possible to make an inflatable cushion with a remote & small air pump? I'd imagine figuring out how to universally strap it in place on most recliners would be the most challenging bit. (Btw, just bc someone doesn't live alone doesn't mean there's always someone available to move a pillow around for them.)

That's a good idea. I use an electric recliner but I have a lot of problems with placing a pillow on my own. I have to use a grabber to place the pillow and then a leg lifter strap to lift my legs onto the pillow. I get tired of fiddling with the pillow that I just end up sitting with my ankles the wrong way.

@@josi7690 Thanks :) It can be very tiring & even pain-inducing to struggle w a cushion/pillow that way...& as you point out, often have it wind up not right anyway. So people don't bother & feel frustrated (& worse about themselves) on top of having their condition(s).

How about 10 hour flights? I am not a frequent flyer but I experience swelling a few years ago on a flight this long. I have another 10 hour flight this year. I am planning on getting up every hour (I hope). Is there some leg or feet exercises while sitting that will help?

👉👉Can you guys please do a segment on “vibration plates”? And how they can help cleanse the lymphatic system? Helps with leg circulation and reduce leg swelling. Also, those seated elliptical devices help with leg circulation.

I was given a vibration plate machine, and when I read the restrictions, I had to give it away. Here is the list of problems that could worsen when using the machine: 1.hip or knee prostheses, 2. Repaired broken bones 3. Heart problems 3. Recent muscle or bone injuries 4. Severe diabetes 5. Epilepsy and 6. Epilepsy. Please be careful when trying out new equipment. Read the fine print before purchasing and make sure that you are healthy enough to use it. I hope this helps.

Thanks for those suggestions. So now do you know why I get hot feet at night when I lay down. It's not dangerous because I've had it for a few years. I'm not diabetic or am I over weight. I do everything put my feet up the wall. Use dr ho. Steo on the dr how board for circulation. So do you have any idea or suggestions why I get this? I do have scoliosis. So I imagine that's why too. From the pressure of my nerves being affected due to the curvature. Or do you have any other suggestion. I'm over 50. Thanks Anyone else have this too. Oh I do put put on compression socks . And it helps right away. So try them It's been what's helps immensely and immediately.

There’s not a lot of hope for altering the environment in my situation. I have a 22” inseam even though I’m 5’5”. I’m an organist, and the bench is much too high for me to reach the pedals except by tiptoe (one is supposed to play the pedalboard with both the heel and the toe parts of the foot). The bench isn’t adjustable and sitting on the edge doesn’t help with circulation. I’ve dealt with swollen ankles and calves for decades. By the time I get out of the shower each morning, I can already see my ankles beginning to swell.

So you mentioned that compression stockings shouldn't go above the knee. But I respectfully disagree. I wear a thigh high compression stockings because I have chronic venous insufficiency. I believe it's crucial to have the entire leg compressed.

Yeah, don't get dressed in the dark! People will think you're bisoxual! Thanks for this. I already knew it generally, but not with these specifics, some of which I'm guilty of but hadn't put into context. P.S. I believe I will exchange my compression sox for toe sox. Or, because my swelling is confined to my left ankle and now my right foot is "compensating" by starting a bunion, maybe I should wear a compression sock on the left and a toe sock on the right. P.P.S. When two things you love don't go together, try adding a third thing you love. (E.g. symmetrical shoes in a color that shouldn't go with either sock.) Usually fixes the aesthetic part of the problem.

I found that compression socks fixed the problem. The leg vein valves cannot be replaced /repaired if not working properly, according to the vascular surgeon I visited. So now I wear these socks 7 days a week daytime, a good diet and exercise regime works wonders
