Taryl, took less than an hour to replace my drive belt. All your helpful hints were spot on: Pinch gas line, remove battery, disconnect steering arms and so on. Not sure if I could have done it without your guidance. Thank you very much.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for a clear and on-point tutorial on the slightly non-trivial/non-obvious process of changing the drive belt on one of these venerable JD lawn tractors!!! My LT166 threw the belt off the rear pulley a week or so ago. I was able to get it back on, but it was obvious the 20 (plus?) year-old belt was due for replacement. The local JD dealer had one in stock, the price was reasonable -- but the procedure of replacement would've been a nightmare without this video. My son (a mathematics professor) and I replaced the belt today in about 2 hours (including taking off and remounting the mower deck) with no undue drama -- again, thanks to the video instructions. Besides preparing this fine ol' mower for, perhaps, another two decades, we've answered the age old question "How many PhDs does it take to change a lawn tractor belt?" In our case, it was two. ;) Thanks again!!!!!

OMG! How EASY you've made this job!! Here's having a Bud Light Tall Boy to ya! I've replaced this stupid belt 2x's doing it laying on my back and fighting awkward arm positions, fighting with the pulleys and sounding like the "Old Man" in Christmas Story. (Sure my neighbors just loved the assortment of words coming from the barn!!) I'm now ready to replace again on my 21 yr old Deere and not dreading job at all. Hopefully the other possible issue I was dreading dealing with will disappear and new drive belt will take me through another season. Thanks a bunch Taryl !!

Thanks a lot, Taryl - here's your dinner! Just got thru changing both belts on my LT160, took 3 hours! I got one more LT160 to do - this just may be a job I didn't want to do, but the belts were toast!

wow! thanks for this invaluable instructional video ... i'm a pretty handy guy, but until i saw this video i wouldn't consider replacing the drive belt on my LT155 myself ... tipping the tractor on it's side is one of the best tricks i've ever seen and makes an impossible job possible ... removing the battery and pinching off the fuel line makes the tip possible, and i love the other tricks as well, not to mention the the excellent instructional commentary during the suburb video taping of the entire process from start to finish!

Thanks for this video! I have an LT170 and it was pretty similar. I had problems accessing one nut under the deck lift mechanism. After fooling around with it for a half hour I realized changing the lift position allowed access. I had slow uphill and this belt completely fixed it!

The video gave me courage, courage to change the trans belt on my LT160. I did it, and I even made my own tool to attach the spring!!! Of course, the first thing I did was to break the hood while laying it over on the folding chair. You Warned Me though. Keep 'em coming! There's YOUR dinner!

I love your videos and learned a lot of great tips. Just sharing a tip of my own. Instead of a "hook tool" a boot lace works amazing. Sometimes old Kevlar belts fray and I get a string from them too works amazing. Wrap around the spring hook, wrap around your wrist and pull, saved me many times on jobs in the field.

Another little trick I learned for putting that spring back on is to use tie down straps. One hook goes over the hook on the spring and the other end of the tie down strap is hooked onto something solid on the frame of the tractor. As you tighten the tie down strap, it pulls the spring. Hook the spring to where it goes and then use channel locks (pliers) to loosen the tie down strap. Wriggle the tie down strap hook of the spring hook and you are down. No straining at all.

Mowing the lawn and my neighbor waved me down... Hit a large branch in my moment of distraction and I'm not sure if the belt broke or popped off its track. Its pretty old, don't think its ever been replaced. Just gotta figure out how to get the lawnmower back up the hill so I can fix it before Dad wakes up! Loved the video. Very educational. Thank you for teaching me how to jerk my deck off!!

OK, I followed these excellent instructions to easily replace the drive belt on my LT155 as follows: 1. The drive belt track on my LT155 is the same as the LT160. 2. All three of the pulley nuts on my LT155 are 13mm instead of 14mm. 3. The front of the tie rods on my LT155 are attached with cotter pins like the rear of the tie rods, so i detached the rear of the tie rods instead of the front since both were attached with cotter pins anyway 4. The mower deck on my LT155 is attached at the rear with pins and cotter pins, which are much less convenient than the way the LT160 mower deck attaches at the rear.

You crazy as a pet raccoon. But man do I appreciate your videos. It's hard to believe a man can have so much fun getting his hands dirty. Many thanks for this. My neighbor has NO mechanical knowledge. I removed his deck and was intimidated by what I saw under there. Guess I had a mental block. It appeared a guy would have to remove all kinds of pieces to weave the new belt in there. So I said, "NUTS". and came home to see if Taryl had a video for me. Thank my lucky stars, and Taryl, there was a video that was just what I needed. His tractor is LT166 but it appears they are identical under neath where the hardware is. This will make it possible for me to finish his mower up tomorrow. It will save me a trip to the dealer and a bunch of labor costs for the neighbor guy.

Many of the Craftsman YS4500's have an almost identical belt drive setup. JD isn't the only one that had complicated belt systems. I like the earlier models that actually had three belts (Deck only, Mower / PTO and Drive) with a release arm right on the deck that slacks off the mower and drive belts simultaneously - despite the cost of an extra belt added to the maintenance list.

When putting the deck belt back on, does the belt go through the triangle-shaped belt keeper at the front or around (outside) it? My Toro LX420 looks just like that and the manual doesn't show how to route the belt with the keeper.
