My albo is 7 ft tall with 27 highly varigated leaves. She was only a foot tall with three leaves 2 years ago. I air layered the top 4 leaves a few months ago and was extremely happy with the results. I now have a gorgeous 6 leaf top cut (She unfurled 2 leaves while propping) and my mother plant has 3 new leaves from the growth point which was activated when I cut. It's now taller than before I cut the top!. I highly recommend air layering rarer plants as there is no danger of rot or danger to the mother plant. You don't cut until you have a nice group of roots.
@Jess_Bishop

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but what is air layering?
@ThePlantasticNerd
@ThePlantasticNerd 2 года назад
@@Jess_Bishop Hey Jess, what air layering basically is : you cover the parts of the plant where an aerial root exists with some sphagnum moss and plastc wrap so you can trap some of the moisture around it. You then go ahead and spray it with some water (not too much, just keep it damp so it does't promote rot) until you can see that aerial root grow and get larger. You can then unwrap it and cut that section of the plant off. That way you first develop roots on a cutting before it is actually cut (I hope that makes sense!) and you minimize the risks of having cut your plant and then losing the cutting. P.S: You shouldn't apologise for not knowing something, we all have to start at some point! 😊

My version is putting the aerial roots in water. That way I don't have to keep moistening the moss and I can also add plant food to the water. What I noticed too was that the shorter roots that can't reach the cup of water yet, grow fast, as if sensing where the water supply is and is a hurry to reach it. 😄

One thing I don't think was mentioned in this video is that you want to look at the auxillary bud - it's a little circular spot on the node that has the promise of growth, so it will be a little more swollen and you should be able to find it. This is the point at which you want to judge the variegation. If there is a good amount of both white and green through the auxillary bud then you should get a similar ratio of white and green in your plant. If it's significantly more white than green, then you will probably have a much whiter leaf grow from it - this isn't a really bad thing, but it can mean that in the future you get all white growth. If you're a beginner you definitely want more even ratio of colour running through the auxillary bud. If there's significantly more green than white then you will still have a great plant, but it will probably have less white variegation on the plant it produces. This can be a really helpful way of judging the level of variegation when buying a cutting. Hope this helps someone :)

As always, Harli, you bring a smile to my face with your humor. I love listening to you explain things. I bought a wet stick albo last year. It was pretty expensive and had no leaves. I took a risk and cut the wet stick in two hopefully to ensure one of the two would produce for me. The first one did successfully and I thought the second part was never going to produce but didn't give up. They both did and now they are potted up together and both are variegated so I am beyond excited. I agree if you can get an albo with a leaf. Thanks Harli!

I ordered a single leaf cutting off etsy and it arrived with the leaf cut off, which is exponentially bad for the cutting. "chonks" or leafless nodes have to rely on the energy stored inside their stem in order to make an entirely new leaf. Sadly, mine rotted steadily so it's best to rely on AT LEAST one leaf.

Thanks you for this great video. Have you tried stratum for propageting the albo? U got my first albo leaf a few weeks ago and just a few days ago switched from water to stratum and hope to see roots soon. I hope I didn't mess it up though.

Hey! What time of the year should I propagate? I was thinking of doing it now but it’s November. Do you recommend I want until Spring?

How long does it take to put out a new growth? Mine transferred from water to soil a month ago and there's literally crazy amount of roots growing (clear pot) and a tiny growth point that's been stagnant since planted in soil...?!?!
