You the Man , Gabriel! Nobody has ever mentioned about centering the lock ring, I've seen so many guys just try to jam the cv axle in an hit it hard, its probably never properly seated. Such a simple trick, I love it! Only a real blue color guy like you can think of such a simple and elegant solution!

Gabriel, Gracias Brother. I pulled both axles out of the boots with my hands but the inside cups stayed stuck in the engine. Yesterday I tried a crow bar, tried hitting it with a screw driver and hammer , tried vise grips but nothing worked. I quit after about 40 minutes of trying. Came home and look in youtube and came across this video. No one uses a chain it seemed but it worked for you and I tried it. Bought a 3 foot chain and 2 bolts with nuts and washers a Lowe’s today. Borrowed a slide hammer form advance auto. I wrapped the chain around it and finger tighten the nut onto the bolt and attached the other side to the slide hammer. 2 pulls and this thing came flying off. AMAZING!!! Took me less than 10 minutes to get both of them out. I laughed so hard that something so simple could have worked so well. I now have a little case to store my “cv axles puller chain”. This dang thing is a life saving tool. Lol. Thank you so much man.

Yes, if 1, or 2 pry bars don't work, I use the slide hammer. They have so many different uses, and they're not expensive at all. I recommend buying or making one, so you have one. You could make a heavy duty one using weight lifting equipment, and it would be nice to be able to change the weight on it. Home Depot sells threaded black steel pipe, with various types of threaded adapters, and endcaps.

All of the videos I have been seeing on RU-vid everybody does the passenger side and that side is the easiest side so I appreciate you doing the hard side which is the driver side. I was trying to get the shaft out for 2 days and then I came across your video good looking out brother You saved my butt on this one.

Thank you. This video help me today to pull out a broken CV axle. The axle came out but left the CV cup on the transmission side in. I wrapped the chain around it and then use the slide hammer on it. After 4 or 5 wag the cup jumped out of the tranny. What a relief! Thanks again for your video.

Hey, you are a very helpful, knowledgeable mechanic! Thank You! 1st of all, you did well with the title of this video. Many who post videos don't think out a good title straight to the point. That is what caught my eye as I was scrolling through axle removal videos. Calling it "Removing a stuck CV joint using a chain" was good. 2nd, your demonstration of how to hook up the chain and pull out the old CV axle was appropriate. I heard of guys using a chain to remove axle shafts before, but could not figure how they did it. The one item that I did not have was the slide hammer. So, after wrapping the chain around the inner part of the axle shaft and putting in the bolt/nut, I took the other end and wrapped it around the heaviest sledge hammer I had, I think it is 15 lb. Then I took the sledge, pointed the handle of the sledge away from the axle, and gave it a couple good tugs. About the 4th pull, the snap ring on the axle let go and the axle popped out. This idea of using a chain is a good one for me, and for others. Most everyone got some kind of chains laying around to use. Also, you were showing how to remove the axle from a Mazda. I own Pontiac Grand Prix's, front drive of course. The access to the inner part of the drive axle shafts next to the differential is easy to get to. Using a large pry bar is difficult because it is hard to swing the handle of the pry bar. I do not have a lift to raise car high enough for clearance. Also, one can buy axle removal tools, but the problem still remains of getting the end of the tool onto the inner end of the axle shaft. On the Grand Prix, that end of the axle shaft is quite bulky, and the power steering lines and transmission wiring harness wires are very close. In the past, I already damaged and had to fix those lines. Not fun at all to work in that area. Well, thanks for the good tips.

The chain is a very good idea if you can't get it out any other way. When I'm installing the inner cup, I put the gap of the clip at the 12:00 O Clock position on the Grove in the shaft, and push the shaft into the transmission with a firm push and it pops right in. Next time I'll try the grease and see if there's a difference. SAFETY FIRST, JACK STANDS ALWAYS.

I recently did some work for a friend of mine, a Army veteran who is battling cancer, and is on dialysis. He was broadsided by a young driver who was trying to beat the light through the intersection and he hit my buddy's 2010 Scion tc hard enough to push us from the center lane to the bus lane on the side of the 3 lane county road we were traveled on. The impact was centered on the left front tire and most of the damage was in the suspension on that side stopping right at the sub-frame. I tried to remove the cup end of the cv joint from the transmission for days with no results. I then decided to drill a hole in the "cup" and attach the hook from a nice stout come along and I then buried my big harbor freight pry bar a couple feet into the ground a couple feet with my mini sledge. I then hooked my come along and started ratcheting until I was as tight as I could. Then I put a flat pry bar on the other side and it came right out

Always use a torque wrench for the axle nut , and the lug nuts. the other nuts you can get by without it but its still better to torque them too. I understand, when you do this work a lot,you get a feel for fastener tightness. But lug nuts and axle nuts should be torqued. Rock on!

Driver's side 2002 Ford Focus couldn't pull it out so bought a length of chain and got it wrapped at the back of the axle at the trans case and a bolt and nut holding it tight and wrapped the other end with another bolt to my van cross member and got it out with a gentle pull reversing the van. Made sure I had room to accomadate the van, big parking lot. I didn't have a slide hammer. Then of course, the replacement axle wouldn;t fit through the wheel hub when test fitting before shoving into the trans.Waiting for replacement to come, should be here soon. Will DEFINATELY use your grease and clip alignment technique when it finally gets here. That should save me from a leaking trans, and since I bought synthetic Motorcraft manual trans lube which costs an arm for one bottle and a lg for two bottles.I don;t want to leak any of THAT stuff!! Zetec and MTX75. Oldie but goodie.
